can some explain why negative numbers cancel each other out and become positive when they are multiplied?

Hi

I have 4 more days until my math paper 1 and I feel really nervous about it. I don't want to do math anymore and would not feel bad if I fail.

I mostly want to do well cause I had put a lot of work and time into math, plus my parents/ teachers really believe in me. But it's hard and stressful, and it's too late to relearn anything I need to.

I think I go to lock in and push for these 4 days, then I'm never going to do it again. I'll try not to overthink cause that's why I failed the first paper.

I'll come back on results day and tell you if it was worth it.

I wish I was more confident to ask for help like I literally have a tutor. What's the worst that can happen.

homework help i guess (algebraic topology)

yall are way too nice to somebody who has clearly put off doing their work for too long and is suffering the consequences of their actions. that said, i am too desperate to pass up any offers to help so... here we go lol.

this was a problem i was working on for hours and gave up on. (chapter 1 exercise 4, in hatcher's algebraic topology)

suppose p is the path. i started with an open cover of X consisting of the locally star-shaped neighborhoods for all x in X. i took the preimage of all the sets in the cover (lets call those Ux) - so p^-1(Ux) is a cover of [0,1], so now i can make a finite subcover (call this Ui, 1 < i < n). from there i defined some line segments in each Ui, but here is the issue: i don't know if those line segments are connected to each other between Ui's, because the Ui's might not be disjoint. and even if i assume the line segments were connected to each other, i got stuck showing that they're homotopic, so i think i'm missing something really major in the setup.

and this is the one i'm working on right now (chapter 1 exercise 6)

i'm just doing the forwards direction but i need to review/relearn induced homomorphisms... i know it's not that complicated but i am just not getting it. honestly the best thing for me to know about this one would be whether it's easier to do the forwards direction or the backwards direction lmao.

sorry to title that like a weird job ad but I'm desperate. I've redone this Simpson's diversity index five different times now in different ways with different calculators and I keep getting a negative number which. from my understanding isn't possible??

I’ll be teaching myself for this one, as well as using repetition and the 60/30 study method to help me for my test on the subject next week. While I would like to take my time for this subject, I’m in crunch time for this. Going forward for midterms, I’m planning on continuing the use of a 45/15/30 study method specifically for math every day to keep on top of course work and any extra work I’ll be assigned.
