Ok, so since you're in gamedev, I'm curious about your perspective on patenting gameplay mechanics, like how the Ascend mechanic was patented prior to ToTK's release. I know Nintendo aren't the only ones doing this, but how common of a practice is that in general? And do you think there's any merit to it or no?
Heyyy sorry I was having a very busy week/weekend, so I kind of left this ask to the side given this is a pretty complicated subject, but here we go!!
So... Basically, my opinion is that it's mostly a bullying method for big corporations, and what seems like a tentative to protect one's work for smaller individuals/entities that they can't realistically enforce anyway. To me, and many devs, it's considered poor etiquette at the very least, especially given the highly iterative nature of gamedev and the extremely specific application of any given idea. The fact that the boundaries of tolerance and how aggressive a company will be at protecting what they feel they own (and here something as nebulous as an intellectual concept and context-less execution) will generally be blurry at best, especially since it's super hard to parse what could be considered inspiration VS what is derivative in a game mechanic, it tends to merely discourage innovation from smaller studios in that specific field, while still having bigger companies perhaps risking a lawsuit because they have already assessed they could cushion the consequences if it does come to that.
As often with copyright laws, but perhaps even moreso here, it dabbles in the corporate justice system, and it is a system that will always disproportionately protect the wealthy, the influencial and the powerful, while leaving people without resources extremely vulnerable. Imagine being a small studio trying to patent your cool mechanic, and then a giant like Riot Games waltz along and decides to steal your mechanic anyway. Can you afford the money to stay lawyered-up for years? Can you tolerate the stress of this David and Goliath situation, or existing in the public eye, or the potential smear campaigns, etc? And if you don't want to enforce your rights due to a lack of resources, your rights may as well not exist.
So I am personnally pretty much against the practice on this basis alone, even discounting how that approach runs counter to the very community-based spirit of game design and game studies. The goal of any self-respecting game designer should be to craft the best possible experience for players. It's good to protect yourself, your living, your place in history of course, but freezing the course of that history for little more than greed... It's not really well considered by a lot of devs that I know.
#thoughts#gamedev#patents#game design#of course there are counter-arguments that I'm more than willing to hear#but to me the potential downfalls of this practice far outweight the hypothetical and very circumstancial benefits#I think enforcing rules around credits and gamedev rights on the games they work on is a better approach than trying to patent stuff#(especially since patents tend to be held by companies over individuals --and losing control over a company is SO easy)#not to devalue the real engineering that goes on in really well polished/conceptualized mechanics#but tbh it's incredibly rare to have a mechanic working EXACTLY the same in two different games#there will always be things --even minor things-- that will have to be different#so it's not comparable with stealing graphic designs or exact characters or a chunk of technology imo#but that's just my opinion of course#and I'm extremely not a lawyer or a jurist or someone who knows the specifics of laws#it's mostly an opinion based on sparse research and conversations with colleagues

#Doodles#Original#Another idea smol and I are working on together :D Been a bit!#She came up with the concept on this one and I fell in love with it <3 She's very cool hehe#If you're familiar with the game Minit it has Something of a similar premise - not the same strict time pressure but yes on the time loop#Y'ever notice how in some games it seems like the wandering trader or traveling shop seems to come upon you rather than the other way around#:3c Hm ♪ Wonder how they'd know where you were gonna be :3c#The crux is that you play as the weapons shop owner and you're responsible for supplying the hero and his team with weapons!#Except the BBEG has gotten wise to how the hero keeps defeating him and it sick of it - so the shop owner is cursed to be in a time loop!#I love the concept <3 It sounds so fun to play in and there's still plenty of room to think about the mechanics and how it would be played#As well as the art design! :D#We threw around some character concepts - she's really into Baldur's Gate 3 at the moment so of course they had some influence in hers hehe#Only got the starting party for the moment but there are plans for a full team of 4 plus the shopkeep >:3c And various other NPCs lol#A lot of the gameplay would basically boil down to being a bartering simulator hehe ♪#Very RPG trade-this-for-that style quests - under a time limit! Hehe#Since it's the type of game that pretty much requires replaying sections time-loop-style it's all about how quickly you can trial and error#And then hightail it to where you need to be lol#I think we were also tossing around a nap mechanic to skip right to the time loop reset in case you mess up a run haha#I gotta get back to Majora's Mask at some point I swear#We still have a good bit of concept work to do on the art side of things - she's also been really into pixel art lately and I love pixel art#I also managed to pick up a full release of one of the RPGMakers :D So that's an exciting possibility!#I haven't learned most of its ins and outs yet but I do know About importing custom assets at the very least >:3c#Same with Novelty and I haven't done that yet either lol - all in due time! #I'm trying so hard to like the fucking region but every time I played the game within that region I feel so mad#I'm trying out the new area n the new creature is just so lacklustre#Tbh I think the design r pretty/cute but playing as them??? Ugh UGH#How do make flying awful#That mechanic broke on me??! I was stuck having to float down to the water lvl cuz I wasn't at right lvl to hit the mountain top#N for some reason the movement for it was locked in one direction so I couldn't even try n turn to get to closer area orz#I know it was just a glitch BUT AFTER having to find that creature only for it not to work? Piss off omg#Also there so much mountain n okay fine I understand that the region design ig#But having wave point be at the highest place where u need to have one of the creatures to even get there if u don't have the correct chara#Character?? this weekend I learned about a drinking game called Splitting the G. you get a full pint of guinness in a guinness glass. you pick up that beer and take a big chug. you put the glass back down and look at the level of the beer. if it's between the top and bottom of the G in Guinness you have split the G and you win (or maybe don't lose?)
anyway I'm leaving this here for ttrpg design tumblr to make a resolution mechanic out of. I'm thinking something along the lines of
split the G - succeed
don't drink enough (G still in the black) - fall short
drink too much (G fully in the clear) - overextend yourself and expose yourself to danger (but maybe with some benefit or opportunity for really going for it?)

dreams are so awesome. had a totk dream last night where i did side quests and shit it was awesome. it was also very explicit about the fact that the botw games are, canonically and explicitly and deliberately, set in the fallout universe
#i dont know if thats right actually.#there were button presses and everything it was shockingly in-depth game design for a dream#we were on a boat preparing for a voyage— let it be known i was not particularly link. i think my brain mixed up my Special Protagonists#into a slurry to represent the player character. but anyway so i had to assist with like 3 tasks preparing the ship for launch#carting a big piece of ice around with a dude in it. with a timer challenge not to melt it since the boat had lava sub-floors.#AS BOATS DO.#a rope pulling sequence involving... esentially mashing but with joysticks. nobody use this irl it sucks.#and some shit involving a malfunctioning cannon where i had to freeze the bad launches in the air (reaction time) which would apparently#let the cannoneer fix the mechanism .. anound the floating balls ? i dont get that part.#and then after that the cannoneer (who was the sort of default leader of the ship bc everybody loved her and also she was the sister of the#captain and also butch.) sent me off to join some teenagers doing everyones favorite boat activity: getting in the little platform at the#bottom of the prow creating a sort of underwater stage and swordfighting whatever comes through the water. obviously.#now like i said this was a totk dream so obviously i took care of this one through my usual botw swordfighting techniques#(standing there and mashing y and just kinda taking damage until im done)#yeah. this of course was after like 3 other dreams— THOUGH they were mostly gentle and forgettable and not drains on my sleep#so i think the citalopram is starting to wear off

#if im wrong ill eat this post or whatever ig#i just think just bc games like ME and BG give branching romance pathways doesnt mean every rpg needs to...#especially as those games have a strong focus on player choice embedded in their design philosophy#and horizon has always been very much a linear story. its just open world#and aloys journey as a character and her relationships? also linear and predetermined. comeon#also unlike bioware and bg3 in horizon games you are not creating a player character. you are not projecting yourself you are empathising#i think it would be veery weird and out of place for guerrila to suddenly include a romace choice mechanic#even the way they allowed the player to choose not to kiss seyka in the dlc was a bit of a cop out i personally think#bc despite it being rather inconsequential and not negating the relationship they had developed nonetheless#it gives people a window to b like. heres how aloy x avad can still win jfhjdn#and outside fandom shipping spaces and in the real world. it gives just enough space for the cognitive dissonance#of ignoring aloys sexuality completely#they might still do it in the next game. or relegate a romantic storyline to a sidequest. which is FINE i guess#like of course i think it should be 70 hours of undeniable unskippable dykery. but realistically i just hope for hashtag gayloy confirmed <#this got away from me but bottom line i just think shipping has poisoned peoples brains and i hate it in this fandom especially

to be clear TRS's maps are generally GBAFE meh, not completely unplayable- and the ones that are for real suckage are intentionally skippable with the tools you have available. they're mostly punishment for being rash with resources.
#sometimes i wonder if gbafe's map design philosophy came from TRS's early plans#but of course TRS augments its kinda meh maps with interesting skills weapons and mechanics#gbafe does not have that.
