Congrats on submitting- must be a good feeling! If I may ask, why anaesthetics over other specialty (from a final year who has no idea what they want to do)
Thank you anon!
The short answer is I really love it and although I had some days that were tough or long or tiring when I did it as an F2, I was excited to learn and go to work each day. And that isn't something you will necessarily realise about a specialty until you're out of med school and working. And that's OK! You don't need to apply immediately, most people take at least a year after foundation, if not more, to get more experience or put more onto a CV.
With anaesthetics there are lots of practical skills (ultrasound techniques, central lines, airway management) but you're not stood for hours doing one surgery. It's physiology in action - you can see a problem and do something to alter it.
I also have never liked clinics and working alone, I like being surrounded by a team. There are clinic opportunities in anaesthetics (like pain, or pre-operative medicine) but they are subspecialties post consultancy and aren't required.
At the moment I think I'd like to dual train in intensive care which has a huge variety of specialties mixed in - you look after post op surgical complications, cardio, resp, neuro, gastro, renal patients. I haven't found a medical specialty that I've thought I would want to work exclusively in this field for the rest of my life.
When I was at uni I kind of knew that I wanted the variety but that I wanted to be in a hospital environment so GP was out, and I was thinking emergency medicine or anaesthetics. The reason why I've gone for anaesthetics over emergency is that I feel the consultant lifestyle and what is actually involved in a consultant job is better in anaesthetics and is what you actually train for. What I mean by this is that I loved being a junior in A&E - seeing patients, initiating a treatment etc, but I felt the consultants were more hands off with patients, having an overview of what was going on, and working through the junior doctors. It didn't feel like I would suit that way of working, whereas with anaesthetics although you have juniors and supervise them, you still do have sessions where you are being the anaesthetist (I hope that makes sense!)
Choosing a specialty is difficult but I would say take advantage of taster weeks if you aren't doing a rotation in something you think you might be interested in. Think about the consultant job, rather than necessarily what the reg life is like because you're going to be a consultant for most of your career. Also don't dismiss or pick certain specialties based on what people say about them. People will say GP is great for work life balance/having a family and while you don't have nights, GPs will work really long days because they simply don't have time to do administrative bits while they are seeing patients, and have to make it up out of clinic hours. (Not that family and having children is the only consideration obviously, and you really shouldn't be basing specialty decisions on just that, it's just the most common thing people talk about and what came immediately to my mind)
There is no perfect specialty for anyone but basically you need to be able to deal with the rubbish bits without it taking away too much from what you really enjoy about it!
Don't let anyone discourage you from doing a specialty. What they don't like about it might be what makes it the best one for you and we need to have different personalities that suit different specialties in medicine!
I hope this helps and good luck with your final year!
If anyone wants to add how they chose their specialty/why they like it then feel free

A Common Stomach Bug May Help Cause Crohn’s Disease, Study Suggests
An illustration of norovirus particles. Illustration: Shutterstock (Shutterstock) A nasty but short-lasting stomach bug may have lingering consequences for an unlucky few. Researchers have found evidence in mice and human cells that norovirus infection can trigger Crohn’s disease in people already genetically predisposed to it. The findings may also help scientists one day find better treatments…

Most people think that...
“Selling is bad!”
“Selling is selfish!”
“Selling is slimy!”
“Selling is creepy!”
This is why most entrepreneurs are not able to grow their businesses…
Why?
Because they have the wrong belief about selling!
They feel uncomfortable selling to their customers.
But you know what?
The truth is… selling is not something you do TO people.
👉Selling is something you do FOR people.
In other words, selling is not a “torture” that you do TO people…
👉Selling is a “service” that you do FOR people.
Selling Is serving.
👉Think about this… most of the people NEED your products or services because they’re in pain…
Unfortunately… many of them don’t even know they need the solutions and need it now.
So change this belief about selling?
By first being sold on your own products or services… and understand that you’re selling this to HELP people for better lives.
Not just to make money.
(If you do not have this belief or mindset... you'll always struggle to sell.)
When your objective of selling is just to make money…
Then you won’t make money.
When the objective is to help people…
Whether it’s through coaching people, entertaining people, or providing services…
Then you’ll automatically be more in serving mode than selling mode.
And you’ll be able to close more!
Your potential buyers can always sniff if you’re only selling to make money…
Or you truly want to serve them!
Hence, it’s vital that you’re sold on your own product or services.
Something to think about!!!

Unlike Delta variant, Omicron less likely to cause long Covid: Lancet study
Tumblr media
The Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is less likely to cause long COVID than the Delta strain, according to a study published in The Lancet journal.
Long COVID is defined as having new or ongoing symptoms four weeks or more after the start of the disease, the researchers said.
Symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath, loss of concentration, and joint pain, which can adversely affect day-to-day activities, and in some cases can be severely limiting, they said.
The researchers found that the odds of experiencing long COVID were between 20-50 per cent less during the Omicron period versus the Delta period, depending on age and time since vaccination.
"The Omicron variant appears substantially less likely to cause Long-COVID than previous variants but still 1 in 23 people who catch COVID-19 go on to have symptoms for more than four weeks," said study lead author Claire Steves from King's College London, UK.
The study identified 56,003 UK adult cases first testing positive between December 20, 2021, and March 9, 2022, when Omicron was the dominant strain.
Researchers compared these cases to 41,361 cases first testing positive between June 1, 2021, and November 27, 2021, when the Delta variant was dominant.
