Animal of the Day!
Bramble Cay Melomys (Melomys rubicola)
Tumblr media
(Photo from State of Queensland)
Extinction Date- 2015
Habitat- Bramble Cay
Size (Weight/Length)-16 cm
Diet- Succulents; Turtle eggs
Cool Facts- The Bramble Cay melomys may seem like an insignificant rodent, but these little guys were officially known as the first mammal to go extinct due to climate change. Found on a tiny island off the northern tip of the Great Barrier Reef, these melomys were threatened by a mixture of storms and rising sea level as the entire Cay was only 3 meters above sea level. During surveys, the last known Bramble Cay melomys was spotted in 2009 and they were officially declared extinct in 2015. Their extinction was a massive wakeup call for mammalian extinctions due to anthropocentric change. The Cape York melomys remains on mainland Australia is considered least concern thanks to preservation of their natural habitat and attempts of eliminating invasive species like foxes, cats, and rabbits.
Rating- 12/10 (Forever remembered.)

Bramble Cay Melomys, by Lisel Jane Ashlock, for Rolling Stone’s article “On the Eve of Extinction”.
Habitat: An island off the coast of Australia Threat: Habitat loss
This tiny rodent was the world’s first mammal to be wiped out by climate change. The entire species lived on a 12-acre island above the Great Barrier Reef called Bramble Cay, which it is thought to have colonized via driftwood or a land bridge lost to sea rise. In 2008, when its population dipped below 100 after decades of decline, the Australian government created a recovery plan. But when scientists returned in 2014, they didn’t find a single melomys; it is believed to have been wiped out by storm surges and rising sea levels. “The Bramble Cay melomys was a little brown rat,” said Tim Beshara of the Wilderness Society. “But it was our little brown rat, and it was our responsibility to make sure it persisted. And we failed.”

#WildlifeWednesday There's a Melomys in the house. Nah, not really. They prefer grasslands, heath, swamp, cane fields (oh no!), and mangroves of FNQ and the NT. #visitbigvolcano #cutecritters #australianwildlife #nativewildlife #nativewildlifeaustralia #mouse #notamouse #Queensland #northernterritory #wildlifeconservation #australia Posted @withregram • @nightwings.centre Fauna at NightWings: we have featured this little native Australian before, but have recently seen lots of grass nests in various places of the Grassland Melomys (Melomys burtoni). These shy - and rather plump - little native rodents live in grasslands and heath fringes bordering swamps, and in mangroves, across much of northern Australia. Melomys are solitary, agile climbers, and (at NightWings) build nests resembling those of wrens, in long grasses and pandanus. They do eat insects, but grass leaves and seeds (including sugar cane) are the main diet. @a-mag-a-day the extinction has always been one of my favourites, alongside the spiral
[ID: traditional black and white ink drawing, the magnus archives fanart consisting of four panels. The first panel says "Mankind will warp this world so much it kills us all and leaves only a thousand years of plastic behind. There is picure of wasteland with skull half burried in it in the front. The second one says " Technology will strip us of what it means to be human and leave us something alien and cold " There is picture of robotic person with television instead of their head. Their arms are raised to it and there are electric shocks running between them and the head. There are empty screens behind them connected by wires. Their head is also empty and there are wires connected to them. The third says " We will press a button that in a moment will destroy everything we have ever been." There is picture of hand in white shirt and black jacket sleeve pressing a button. There is nuclear explosion in the background. The last panel says "animals are witnessing the end of their entire species within a single generation" There is picture of three animals, the first Bramble cay melomys, a small rodent resembling a mouse, the second splendit poison frog and the third one smooth handfish, a strange fish with hand-like fins and spotted body. In the top right corner is written "extinct" three times in square brackets end ID]

🙃What’s a weird fact that you know?
🦖 Favorite extinct animal?
there was a kpop group named piggy dolls that originally consisted of three fat/plus sized singers who struggled to make it in the industry due to fatphobia. their concept focused mostly on body positivity and fat acceptance but many accused them of "promoting unhealthy lifestyles". all three members were eventually replaced by three thin members and then the group later disbanded. one of the replacement members in currently in pink fantasy
gotta love bramble cay melomys rip kings 😔

Would u say ur blog (really any beige ones) is popular? I want to start an aesthetic blog but don’t know how, what kind or any good accounts beside urs for reference. Is it easy?
hi anon! i'd say they're pretty popular. the beige/cream/warm aesthetic is trendy these days, as you may have seen on a lot of korean instagram pages, which is where most of the photos come from. and yes, it's easy! you really don't have to post anything original unless you want to. tbh basically all of my posts are queued reblogs from other blogs i follow.
you can start by checking out my lovely mutuals 💕✨

🐸 🦖 for the ask game <3
🦖 favorite extinct animal- Bramble Cay melomys (I like tiny rodents)
🐸 describe your aesthetic- I feel it's a mix of things; I like very fuzzy soft things(stuffed animals, blankets, etc.), sad romance movies, then on the other side I like darker edgier(?) things (Metal bands (Ghost, Slipknot, Slaughter To Prevail), horror movies, dunno if this counts but I mainly dress all black 90% of the time)

🦚 : if you like writing - what’s your favorite genre to write?
I love writing. I’ve recently gotten back into it with dnp fics and as I practice I realize I’ve gotten better who would’ve thought? I’m a scifi super powers nerd. With fanfic, I hate writing reality fics. I can do realistic fiction, but I’m not that keen on writing just romance. I can’t write smut for the life of me. Despite being a history nerd and majoring in history and planning on becoming a history teacher, I cannot write historical fiction for the life of me.
🧃: what are some clothes from different time periods you’d love to wear?
I have an eating disorder I haven’t worn clothes I want to wear since I was in sixth grade😭
