Took some new shots of my kilt jacket to submit to an art show! I don't know if I'll get in but it could be cool - regardless you should check them out :) they're @queermetalsmiths on Instagram 🤘🏻
This was for a very special custom asking for a brass heart, if possible. The thing is, it’s very hard to find ready made brass heart rings??? I have no idea why.
I had been wanting to start metal fabrication so this was a great opportunity for me. Metalworking is so very complex but the range of what you can do is so rewarding.
December, 2014
Sterling Silver, Cubic Zirconias, Quartz
The ring is 5cm tall.
The big stone is: 3.1cm x 2.1cm x 5cm (HxWxD)
Some more old work.
This ring was part of a series of work where I made fun of the modern commercial jewelry aesthetic. The idea came from working within the jewelry industry for a time, and becoming acutely aware of just how gaudy and ugly a lot of rings were. The stones were incredibly important for those rings, and more often than not designs would be based around shoehorning the biggest rock they could into a particular ring. So, I decided to take this idea to its next logical extreme by setting a comically large stone on top of a massive band.
Here’s a snippet from the original artist statement:
It is an aberrant abomination which I hesitate to call a ring. It is an absurd joke befitting the mockery that I consider contemporary jewelry to be. It represents all the contempt which I hold towards the gem encrusted standard created by the likes of companies who care more about their bottom line than creativity. It is the next logical progression to the ungodly "centerpiece" gems which are so often the focal point of their jewelry items. It is absurd, it is comical, and it is how I view such jewelry.
It’s been a month since I launched the new Silver Raven Studio site and dropped my latest collection! ☾
What a whirlwind it’s been - navigating through all the online changes + new features was quite the learning curve. But it’s been amazing to reconnect with all of you through our shared love for jewelry! ♡
Stay tuned, fresh jewels coming soon! To stay in the know, sign up for my monthly newsletter on the site! 🜃
Gymnosperm, 2023. Probably 3”x3”x3” but I haven’t officially measured it.
Materials:
Sheet copper
Copper wire
Tin-silver solder
Prismacolor pencils
Gloss spray sealant
Glitter nail polish
Stuart Semple’s Black 2.0 acrylic paint mixed with Liquitex
Gorrila Glue
…and, last but not least, a Pined Cone
This piece was created for my Fundamentals of Metalsmithing course. The goal was to incorporate a found object into a piece and make it a focal point, while also improving soldering skills. It definitely connects to that alien world shit I do sometimes. I imagine it to be an ambulatory plant that scampers around on its leg-like leaves. Or leaf-like legs…?
🖤✨— During the past few weeks, I’ve been teaching myself how to solder, among other things such as fabricating bezels for necklaces from sterling silver sheet metal and wire. In the photo above, you’re actually looking at a memento I made for a good friend of mine - this is her dog (Biminis) blood casted with epoxy and set into the bezel! Biminis is still with us today, but this memento will be something to hold onto forever! I’ve also been experimenting with doing the same thing with ashes as memorial pieces for animals that have passed away. For those who might have questions, please feel free to DM me! This process is completely safe, and no animals were harmed in the making of this!—— .
We're going to craft you some blades pirate-baby, yeeeeoh! Matter of fact, call em' history-smacking in the making. Remember though, any weaponry can only go as far, the wielder wills, the user being dull is equally a factor than a blade being such. In short, if you don't have a nurtured blazing soul equally sharp, you'll never pierce the unreachable heavens.
I am going to finish a Smilodon gem eyed pendant or die trying.
…I am also going to finish a wolf gem eyed pendant or die trying. Going to go carve at that one after Smilodon for maximum fresh eyes. Hopefully it shouldn’t take TOO long…
