The Two Most Iconic Wheel Standers of All Time.
Hurst Hemi Under Glass
Hurst Hemi Under Glass is the name given to a series of exhibition drag racing cars campaigned by Hurst Performance between 1965 and 1970 across North America and ended with the '68 model year.
Each wheelstander was based on the current Plymouth Barracuda for the corresponding model year. The car was so named because the fuel injected Chrysler Hemi engine was placed under the Barracuda's exceptionally large rear window. The result of the rearward weight transfer was a "wheelie" down the length of the drag strip.
The Hemi Under Glass was developed by Hurst Corporation to showcase their products in the A/FX class - precursor to funny cars. In 1965, George Hurst hired Wild Bill Shrewsberry of Mansfield, OH, an accomplished drag racer who had raced for both Mickey Thompson and Jack Chrisman. After helping to pioneer it into the first wheelstanding exhibition car, Shrewsberry left at the end of the season to pursue his own project.
For the 1966 season, Bob Riggle, who was also from Mansfield, OH and was involved with Hurst as a mechanic and fabricator became the second driver of the Hurst Hemi Under Glass car and campaigned the cars with Hurst as the sponsor until later years when the Hurst Company was sold to Sunbeam. At that point, the car ran without the Hurst logo and was simply known as the "Hemi Under Glass." Riggle's career ended in 1975 with a devastating accident at US 30 Dragway in Gary, Indiana.
Popular model kits of the car were produced in 1/32 scale by Aurora Plastics Corporation and in 1/25 scale by Model Products Corporation. A limited edition 1/18 scale diecast model of the 1966 car is currently available from Highway 61.[1]
Riggle returned to exhibition racing in 1992 with a 1966 injected version of the car and a 1968 supercharged version of the car.[2] The original 1965 car was stripped for its power train and parts in 1967 for the new Barracuda chassis/body style and no longer exists.[3][4]
While taping the June 26, 2016 episode of Jay Leno's Garage, Riggle, with Leno riding in the passenger seat, rolled a newly constructed '69 version of the Hemi Under Glass after turning sharply at the end of a wheelie run. Neither of the men were hurt, but the car sustained significant damage.[5] Leno was riding along to fulfill another item on his 'Bucket List.'
July, 2016, Mike Mantel of New Braunfels, TX was named as the new driver of the Hemi Under Glass. Mantel took over the '68 car which has the longest performing history of any Hemi Under Glass ever constructed and becomes the third official driver in the brand's 50+ year history.[6] Mantel was only 6 years old when the Hemi Under Glass first took to the track. He has a wide range of driving experience from drag cars, road race, and movie cars. Mantel's original hometown is the city of Hawthorne, CA.
Billy Lawrence Golden (December 31, 1933 – September 14, 2015),[1] nicknamed "Maverick", was an American drag racer. He is probably best known for driving the Little Red Wagon A/FX wheelstander pickup exhibition racer.
Little Red Wagon
Born in Shawnee Township, Illinois, Golden joined the US Marines and first became interested in drag racing while at Camp Pendleton.
Golden was given his "Maverick" nickname in the late 1950s by an announcer at a Southern California dragstrip, because he chose to drive an unconventional 361 cu in (5,920 cc)-powered Dodge Custom Royal. He started racing in AHRASuper Stock, driving Dodges for several years. He was one of the first drivers in AHRA S/S to successfully run an automatic transmission. In 1960, Chrysler offered to provide him parts, when he was driving a Dodge Phoenix, powered by a 330 hp (250 kW) 330 cu in (5.4 L) with twin Carter carburetors and cross-ram intake manifold; the car was capable of quarter-mile times of 13.7 seconds.
By 1962, he was a factory driver, driving an S/SA Dodge. At the 1962 AHRA Winternationals, driving his bright yellow hemi "Taxi Cab" Dodge 330, he scored a "stunning" victory over "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 409 cu in (6,700 cc) factory Chevrolet at Fontana Drag City, to take the Stock Eliminator title, Chrysler's only Nationals win for 1962.
In 1963, Golden worked with Jim Nelson of Dragmasters to improve the car, and won seven Super Stock races out of eight events, taking the Midwest Championship.
At the end of the 1964 season, Chrysler proposed Golden drive the Little Red Wagon A/FX pickup. which became drag racing's first wheelstanding truck.
Little Red Wagon's first outing, at the AHRA Grand American event at Lions Drag Strip, was an 11 second pass at 120 mph (190 km/h). The crowd's very enthusiastic reaction prompted Golden to turn the A/FX truck into a wheelstanding exhibition racer, which he developed a steering mechanism for himself, relying on experience from his day job at Douglas Aircraft Corporation. The wheelstander was wrecked in 1969, 1971, and 1975; the third crash was nearly fatal to Golden.
Golden retired in 2003. He died on September 14, 2015.[3]

RG Gundam Epyon!
Wow, what a wonderful kit! Building this one was relatively straightforward and pleasant. There’s a LOT of undergating in this kit, which helps keep it clear of nib marks, but can be very challenging to remove at times due to the small scale of a 1/144 kit.
This was my first time doing water slide decals, and WOW was it tedious at first. After much trial and error, I got into a bit of a flow with it and it became easier. The payoff is terrific, too!
I used matte spray on this one to seal in the decals as I’m unsure of how safe they are after they dry. I wasn’t taking chances after accidentally wiping off the water slides half a dozen times throughout the detailing…
I really recommend this kit! It’s a bit pricey for an RG, but the engineering of the parts and ease of assembly make it so worth it. And look how great it looks! It can even transform into a goddamned twin-headed dragon, which I didn’t do because I was afraid of fucking up any single atom of the model after building.
If you can believe it, that whip/tail attachment on the arm is ONE ENTIRE PIECE you clip directly off the runner. If you’re newer to the hobby, you may want to skip applying EVERY detail sticker that comes in the kit, as you’d be doing >100 applications.
Epyon is not very balanced with the wings and giant sword attached. The mounting bracket for the stand attaches to the backpack, which puts it at an odd angle for non-adjustable stands (I snapped a peg off of a 3D printed one my girlfriend made me before taking the final pic…). If you have patience when trying to make it balance or a spare Action Base 5 lying around, go for it!
Build cutting and assembly took about 18 hours. Panel lining took another hour. The rest was all water slide decal application. (>人<;)

At the 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans, Porsche unveiled a unique one-off vehicle: the Porsche 963 RSP. Developed as a tribute to the legendary 917 and inspired by Count Rossi’s 1975 street-driven prototype, the 963 RSP is based on Porsche’s LMDh competition car but reimagined for public roads under special conditions.
The project was a collaboration between Porsche AG, Porsche Penske Motorsport, and Porsche Cars North America, with direct involvement from Roger Penske—whose initials form the RSP name. The concept was initiated as a design study and passion project, eventually culminating in a street-legal prototype unveiled near Circuit de la Sarthe.
The 963 RSP retains the race-spec 4.6-liter twin-turbocharged V8 hybrid powertrain, delivering up to 680 horsepower. Originally developed for the RS Spyder and later refined in the 918 Spyder, the engine architecture includes a flat crankshaft, short stroke, and Van der Lee turbochargers for optimized throttle response. The hybrid system uses a Bosch motor generator unit and a Williams Advanced Engineering battery, working with a 7-speed Xtrac sequential gearbox. For road use, the power delivery was remapped to be smoother, and the system was configured to run on pump fuel.
To comply with road operation under French regulation, the chassis was adjusted with raised ride height, softened Multimatic dampers, and revised software to enable functioning headlights, taillights, and turn signals. Michelin rain-spec tires were mounted on 18-inch forged OZ wheels. Unique modifications such as covered wheel arches, a working horn, and license plate mounts were added.
Visually, the 963 RSP is finished in Martini Silver paint—not a wrap—requiring a triple-layer lacquer on ultra-thin Kevlar® and carbon fiber surfaces. An enamel Porsche crest replaces the standard nose graphic, and 1970s Michelin branding adds a period-correct touch. The rear features a 3D-printed “963 RSP” badge.
The interior departs sharply from the competition car. Trimmed in tan leather and Alcantara, it includes a cushioned, leather-wrapped carbon seat, air conditioning, a leather-finished steering wheel, and even a detachable 3D-printed cup holder. Storage space is provided for a laptop, headset, and Roger Penske’s custom carbon helmet. Ventilation outlets mimic the 917’s engine fan design, reinforcing historical continuity.
While the 963 RSP is not homologated for mass production, it is fully operational and authorized for limited road use under manufacturer permissions. Following its debut, the vehicle will appear at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart and the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
This project showcases Porsche’s ability to blend heritage, engineering, and bespoke craftsmanship—all within the limits of a modern endurance prototype.

With a Variety of Ways to Sting, the F-89 Scorpion Was the First Line of Defense
From cannons to rockets to nuclear-armed ordinance, the F-89 seemed a formidably armed interceptor, protecting North America in the early years of the Cold War from Soviet bomber fleets coming over the polar region.
Darrick Leiker

In the years following World War 2 the United States faced a new enemy, a power with a large military and continued large scale testing and development of nuclear weapons. That enemy was the Soviet Union. They tested their first atomic bomb in 1949. It was the beginning of the Cold War.

The age of the jet was also in its infancy, and the United States was caught with a holdover from World War 2 for air defense interceptor duties against enemy bombers. The Northrop P-61 Black Widow was a large, heavily armed, twin boom, twin engine prop plane. P-61’s served in both Europe and Asia with distinction as night fighters. Rugged and reliable as it was, speed and range would challenge the plane in the role of intercepting high altitude bombers coming across the North Pole.
The USAAF (United States Army Air Force), soon to be in 1947 USAF (United States Air Force), needed a new all-weather interceptor that was jet powered. After considering offerings from Curtis, Northrop, and Douglas, Northrop’s design was chosen. The two-seat plane was dubbed the “Scorpion” by Northrop employees due to the aircraft’s highly swept tail creating a stance similar to the arachnid. Designated the XF-89, the prototype first flew Aug. 16, 1948. A total of six variants would serve as all-weather interceptors from Alaska to Iceland.

This distinguishing characteristic of A and B models was modified to an internal dampening system starting with the C model. The 20 mm cannons in the nose are clearly visible as well. (Image Credit: United States Air Force)
The F-89A and F-89B
Powered by two J35-A-21 engines and armed with six 20 mm cannon in the nose, the F-89A was the first version of the Scorpion to see service. It had underwing mounts for bombs and rockets and wingtip fuel tanks extending range. 48 of the A models were ordered but only 18 actually built, the remaining 30 were converted to the improved B model configuration. Most of the existing F-89A models were eventually brought up to the B configuration as well. The F-89B was essentially the same aircraft as the F-89A, the differences being new avionics were installed and eventually the planes received the more powerful J35-A-33 engines.
The F89C
A total of 164 of the F-89C version were delivered to the USAF. The C model had increased engine thrust over previous versions. Several F-89C’s disintegrated in mid-air causing the grounding of the entire fleet in 1952. A major structural redesign of the wing was initiated to solve the problems, and all F-89 aircraft went through a modification program. The F-89C had a top speed of 650 mph (1046 km/h) and a maximum range of 905 miles (1456 km).
Tumblr media

The F89D
The F-89D model had a new Hughes E-6 radar fire control system, guiding the aircraft toward the predicted position of the target automatically. However, this version carried no guns. Instead it was armed with 104 unguided 2.75 in (69 mm) “Mighty Mouse” rockets. Pods on each of the wingtips carried 52 rockets each in the frontal area, and aircraft fuel behind the ordinance. The rockets could be fired several different ways with the most potent being a salvo of all 104 rockets being released in under four-tenths of a second. Usually flying in pairs, the idea was to fly to the formations of enemy bombers and fire salvos into them, one rocket had enough explosive power to bring down a bomber. The F-89D was the most produced version of the Scorpion with 862 built. It had a maximum speed of 636 mph (1024 km/h), maximum range of 1,367 miles (2200 km), and a service ceiling of 49,200 ft.
Tumblr media

The missiles were retracted into the pods and had aerodynamic doors that covered them. 21 unguided 2.75 in rockets were also housed in frontal area of each pod. The rear area of the pods carried fuel. (Image Credit: United States Air Force)
The F89H and F-89J
A solitary YF-89E was produced for engine testing. The F-89F and F-89G models were planned but never became a reality. Instead the F-89H was developed, carrying the newer Hughes E-9 fire control system. Armament changed again with the addition of three GAR-1 (Guided Aircraft Rocket) guided air-to-air missiles attached around the outer areas of each of the wingtip pods in retractable mechanisms. There were provisions to carry 21 of the 2.75 in unguided rockets in the pods as well. This Scorpion could also carry the new deadly unguided MB-1 Genie nuclear armed rocket. Two of these could be mounted to the aircraft, one under each wing. Close to 350 F-89D aircraft were upgraded with these armaments and re-designated the F-89J. This would be the final variant of the F-89.

The Genie
Developed out of the fear of large armadas of Soviet bombers raining bombs on targets in the United States and throughout North America, the Genie was the first nuclear armed air-to-air rocket. The warhead was 1.5 kilotons and the range was 6 miles (9.6 km). The fireball upon detonation would be ¼ mile (0.8 km) wide. The rocket was over 9 ft (2.74 m) long and weighed 822 lb (373 kg). It flew at a maximum speed of Mach 3.3. The MB-1 designation was changed to AIR-2 (Air Intercept Rocket) in 1963. 3,150 Genies were produced, garnering the nickname “Ding Dong” by service personnel. Only the United States and Canada had the rocket in their inventories, and it was removed from service in 1988.
Tumblr media
Photo of the nuclear warhead test over the Yucca Flats Nuclear Test Site, Nevada on 19 July, 1957. The Genie rocket was fired from a Northrop F-89J Scorpion fighter. (Image Credit: United States Air Force)
On July 19, 1957, during “Operation Plumbbob”, a nuclear armed Genie was fired from an F-89J Scorpion. From an altitude of approximately 18,000 ft, it was detonated over Yucca Flats, Nevada. With no protective gear, a group of five USAF officers and one photographer stood on the ground at ground zero to demonstrate how safe the weapon was for use over populated areas. This was the only live test ever conducted of this weapon.
The tactical plan for use of the Genie in time of war was for the F-89 to operate in tandem, upon interception of the enemy bomber formation the Genie rocket was fired from one aircraft and that plane would immediately turn away and dive to theoretically avoid the nuclear blast. The second plane would then converge on any enemy aircraft not destroyed in the explosion, but damaged or disabled from the electromagnetic pulse, and fire unguided rockets into them to finish them off.

Battle Tested . . . Sort of
The F-89 Scorpion never fired any weapons in anger at an enemy, but it was involved in one peculiar incident known as “The Battle of Palmdale”.
After World War 2 had ended, the United States found itself with a surplus of obsolete aircraft. Some of these aircraft were converted to radio controlled drones for research use and as targets. One such aircraft was the Grumman F6F Hellcat.
The Hellcat had served with distinction in the U.S. Navy during the war but was no longer fit for frontline service. Converted to un-manned radio controlled drones and painted bright red or orange; they were flown off aircraft carriers and launched from air bases to be used for target practice. The bright paint jobs made them easy to spot and distinguished them as targets.
On Aug. 16, 1956, one such Hellcat drone took off from Point Mugu Naval Air Station, California. The plan was to fly the drone out over the ocean away from populated areas and test the new AIM-7 Sparrow air-to-air missile on it. However that is not what happened.
Soon after launching the drone, radio control was lost. This was not a huge issue of concern as the plane would just fly out to sea, run out of fuel, and crash. But the plane did not continue out to sea, instead turning and heading directly for Los Angeles. The Navy now had a problem, the plane might crash into a population center, and they had no fighters available to scramble to bring it down before it reached Los Angeles. A call went out to the USAF.
Two F-89D Scorpions were dispatched from nearby Oxnard Air Force Base. The two aircraft had 208 unguided 2.75 in rockets between them, and the latest electronic guidance system installed. Chasing down an unmanned propeller driven target drone and destroying it should have been a simple task. Again that is not what happened.
The two F-89’s caught up with the drone in a wide circling pattern around the city and waited for it to move away from populated areas as not to rain down debris and wreckage upon the citizens of California. When the Hellcat did move over mostly uninhabited area, one Scorpion moved in for the kill. The pilot pressed the fire button and nothing happened. Moving out of the way and allowing his wingman the opportunity, the second F-89 moved in position. Again the pilot pushed the fire button and nothing happened. The electronic fire control system had failed on both aircraft. Having the automated system and lacking guns, no manual gun sights were installed on the interceptors. The pilots would have to point their planes and fire at the drone, overriding the automated system and using the manual fire process.
The first F-89 fired a salvo of 42 rockets as the drone began to turn back towards Los Angeles. Not a single rocket hit the target. The second Scorpion fired another 42 rockets, with a couple bouncing off the Hellcat but not exploding. As the drone was approaching the town of Newhall, each interceptor made another pass firing 32 rockets each again with no hits. Now approaching Palmdale, the pilots of the Scorpions each fired the last remaining 30 rockets to no avail. Now out of ammo and low on fuel, there was nothing more the F-89 pilots could do.
The Hellcat was also low on fuel and flew on, finally crashing in a remote area taking out a few power lines but not causing much more damage than that. However, the rockets launched by the Scorpions ignited several brush fires, damaged several homes and vehicles in Palmdale, and even scored a direct hit on a parked utility truck who’s occupants had just disembarked to sit under a tree. Oil fields burned and over 1,000 acres of land was consumed, taking firefighters two days to contain the blazes. One report has a rocket shooting through a resident’s living-room window and a total of fifteen undetonated rockets were eventually found on the ground. Fortunately there were no fatalities that day.
Retirement from Service and Lessons Learned
The Northrop F-89 was retired from active service by the USAF in 1960. However, the aircraft continued duties with the ANG (Air National Guard) until 1969. The plane had stood in the gap defending the North American continent during a time of constant fear of nuclear war, filling that void until faster and more advanced aircraft came into service. The Genie rocket continued on, finding a new home in the F-106 Delta Dart and the F-101 Voodoo. The GAR-1 would be re-designated the AIM-4 (Air Interceptor Missile) in 1962.
While it may seem questionable in modern times to launch unguided nuclear rockets at enemy bombers, one must take into account the times, when almost anything seemed reasonable to protect the populace and ease their concerns. Citizens built bomb shelters in their backyards and children practiced “duck and cover” drills under their school desks. The United States Navy was developing nuclear-armed torpedoes, the Army atomic artillery and tactical missiles, and the Air Force had the Bomarc (Boeing Michigan Research Center) surface-to-air missile that could also be armed with a nuclear warhead and used against incoming bombers.
The later versions of the Scorpion were some of the first production interceptor/fighter aircraft built for the United States military without guns. The lessons of the Battle of Palmdale seemed ignored for a time, and it would take the skies over a place called Vietnam to make the American military realize the importance of arming a fighter with guns.

Dr. Jeanette Jo Epps (November 3, 1970) is an aerospace engineer and NASA astronaut. She received both her MS and Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Maryland, where she was part of the rotor-craft research group and was a NASA GSRP Fellow. She was chosen for the 20th class of NASA astronauts in 2009, graduating in 2011. She serves as a member of the ISS Operations Branch and has completed analog astronaut missions, including NEEMO 18 and CAVES 19. She is the second woman and first African-American woman to have participated in CAVES. She has been selected to fly to the ISS in early 2024 as part of the SpaceX Crew-8 crew.
She was born in Syracuse, one of seven children born to Henry and Luberta (née Jackson) Epps, Mississippians who moved to Syracuse as part of the Great Migration. She and her twin sister Janet excelled in math and science. She graduated from Corcoran High School in Syracuse and earned a BS in physics from Le Moyne College.
Her research was focused in the area of materials engineering, which included comprehensive testing of composite swept-tip beams, comparison of analytical models with experimental results for shape memory alloys, and use of shape memory alloy actuators for tracking helicopter rotor blades in-flight.
After graduating, she worked in research at Ford Motor Company as a Technical Intelligence Officer with the Central Intelligence Agency. Her work at the Ford Motor Company resulted in a provisional patent involving the application of magnetostrictive actuators to reduce vibrations in the suspension control arms, and a US patent for detection of the location of a frontal collision in an automobile. She worked at the CIA for seven years, including deployments to Iraq. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #alphakappaalpha

Shadow High OCs Bio 8 (Final): Blake Luz
Tumblr media
COLOUR: Platinum
YEAR: Fourth
GENDER: Male
FOCUS: Mixed Media
STYLE: Layered. Industrial. Punk.
QUOTE: “Hear my engine roar!”
BIO: Ruff, tuff, tall, and buff, Blake is an upperclassman athlete whose unbeatable inverted biker look shows everyone within a mile radius who’s boss. He’s a mixed media focus who specializes in designing the freshest, edgiest decals for cars and motorbikes, and you better believe he’s got a Class M license and a sick ride of his own. Growing up as a foster kid in Boulder City, he had to learn quicker than most his age to rely on himself and be his own strength. Blake’s dreams of recognition and respect came true when he was accepted to Shadow High on a partial scholarship thanks to his amazing auto body work making the rounds of the west coast and his decal art videos exploding in popularity online. Far from the troublemaker and emotional time bomb he used to be as a freshman, his experiences have helped him grow into a role model of sorts for his younger classmates. Like a moody older brother, he can be hard on the underclassmen, but they all know he’ll stick up for them when they need it.
OTHER:
-He’s 18 and from Boulder City, Nevada.
-His sport of choice is football.
-Thrifts and bargain-hunts a lot of his clothes and accessories, but splurges on art supplies.
-Though normally chill and deadpan, he uses his intimidating vibe in service of the underdog and the outcast. He’s got such a reputation as a protector and school vigilante that any and all bullying stops dead in its tracks as soon as he’s in the vicinity. Even the Storm twins give him a pretty wide berth.
-Candy’s crush on him makes him uncomfortable, since she’s technically still a kid while he’s practically an adult.
-For accessories, Blake’s all about belts, chains, studs, shades, and fingerless gloves.
-One of his favourite classes was Nail Art, and he was able to create a number of metallic, industrial manicure looks based on his decal work. He doesn’t ever do his own nails apart from a simple coat of black or white, though, since long acrylics are a driving hazard waiting to happen.
-He’s known Nyxie since freshman year, and he attends all her runway shows and she in turn models his nail art. Their support and admiration for each other are purely platonic.
-Glam metal is his guilty pleasure.
-Is more or less the cool-but-irresponsible big brother type with underclassmen. He once caught Ruby Anderson grafitti-ing under the stands during a Shadow High vs Rainbow High football game, but instead of ratting her out decided to join in. (Thanks @sunshine7eyes)

Toyota Supra: A thorough explanation of past models, their appeal, and the latest technology
2024/11/29 18:47
Tumblr media
The Supra is a sports car manufactured by Toyota Motor Corporation, and has been loved by many car fans for many years for its high performance and attractive design. Its history dates back to the 1980s, and since the first model was released, it has been a dream car for many car enthusiasts. The Supra is particularly excellent in terms of engine performance and driving performance, and has attracted attention in the world of motorsports.
Tumblr media
The Supra is positioned as Toyota's top-of-the-line sports car, and all models share the same high driving performance. In particular, the fourth-generation Supra (model 80) appeared in the 1990s and gained worldwide popularity along with its design. This model was equipped with a twin-turbo engine and excellent handling, and was highly praised for its driving performance on circuits and highways. It also appeared in the movie "The Fast and the Furious," further spreading its name.
Tumblr media
The fifth-generation Supra (Aruhachi) was introduced in 2019 and was developed jointly with Toyota. This new model has further evolved as a modern sports car, incorporating the latest technology and design. The engine is an in-line six-cylinder engine, and the acceleration performance and driving experience are at a very high level. In addition, the adoption of a platform made by Toyota has further improved driving performance.
The Supra is not only outstanding in terms of engine performance and driving dynamics, but also in its design. The streamlined body is a design born from the pursuit of aerodynamic performance, and while it has the beauty of a sports car, it has a shape that takes practicality into consideration. The interior is designed with the driver in mind, with a layout that maximizes the enjoyment of driving. The seats and instrument panel also exude an atmosphere befitting a sports car.
Tumblr media
The appeal of the Supra is not limited to its driving performance. It also has high standards of safety and comfort, making it a very well-balanced car for a modern sports car. The latest model is equipped with Toyota's advanced driving assistance systems and safety equipment to ensure the safety of the driver and passengers. This makes the Supra a sports car that is suitable for everyday driving, and can be enjoyed comfortably even on long drives.
The Supra is popular not only with car enthusiasts, but also with people who enjoy customization and tuning. A wide variety of tuning parts and accessories are available, allowing you to customize your car to suit your individual tastes. One of the attractions of this car is that you can make the Supra your own by improving engine performance, changing the exterior, tuning the suspension, and so on.
Tumblr media
Furthermore, because the Supra offers a unique presence and the emotions expected of a sports car, for many drivers it is not just a means of transportation, but a car for the enjoyment of driving itself. The exhilaration of driving and the pride of owning a Supra continue to be major attractions for Supra owners.
Tumblr media
The Toyota Supra is an excellent sports car that combines modern technology and design while retaining the appeal of classic cars of the past. For many Supra fans, this car is not just a means of transportation, but an important part of their lives, offering the enjoyment of its driving performance, design, and the act of driving itself.

Curtiss SB2C-5 Helldiver
The Helldiver was developed to replace the Douglas SBD Dauntless. It was a much larger aircraft, able to operate from the latest aircraft carriers and carry a considerable array of armament. It featured an internal bomb bay that reduced drag when carrying heavy ordnance. Saddled with demanding requirements set forth by both the U.S. Marines and United States Army Air Forces, the manufacturer incorporated features of a "multi-role" aircraft into the design.
The Model XSB2C-1 prototype initially suffered development issues connected to its Wright R-2600 Twin Cyclone engine and three-bladed propeller; further concerns included structural weaknesses, poor handling, directional instability, and bad stall characteristics. In 1939, a student took a model of the new Curtiss XSB2C-1 to the MIT wind tunnel. Professor of Aeronautical Engineering Otto C. Koppen was quoted as saying, "if they build more than one of these, they are crazy". He was referring to controllability issues with the small vertical tail.
The first prototype made its maiden flight on 18 December 1940. It crashed on 8 February 1941 when its engine failed on approach, but Curtiss was asked to rebuild it. The fuselage was lengthened and a larger tail was fitted, while an autopilot was fitted to help the poor stability. The revised prototype flew again on 20 October 1941, but was destroyed when its wing failed during diving tests on 21 December 1941.
Large-scale production had already been ordered on 29 November 1940, but a large number of modifications were specified for the production model. Fin and rudder area were increased, fuel capacity was increased, self-sealing fuel tanks were added, and the fixed armament was doubled to four 0.50 in (12.7 mm) machine guns in the wings, compared with the prototype's two cowling guns. The SB2C-1 was built with larger fuel tanks, improving its range considerably.
The program suffered so many delays that the Grumman TBF Avenger entered service before the Helldiver, even though the Avenger had begun its development two years later. Nevertheless, production tempo accelerated with production at Columbus, Ohio and two Canadian factories: Fairchild Aircraft Ltd. (Canada), which produced 300 (under the designations XSBF-l, SBF-l, SBF-3, and SBF-4E), and Canadian Car and Foundry, which built 894 (designated SBW-l, SBW-3, SBW-4, SBW-4E, and SBW-5), these models being respectively equivalent to their Curtiss-built counterparts. A total of 7,140 SB2Cs and equivalent models were produced in World War II.
Initially poor handling characteristics and late modifications caused lengthy delays to production and deployment, to the extent that it was investigated by the Truman Committee, which turned in a scathing report. This contributed to the decline of Curtiss as a company. Neither pilots nor aircraft carrier skippers seemed to like it. Nevertheless, the type was faster than the Dauntless, and by the end of the Pacific War, the Helldiver had become the main dive bomber and attack aircraft on USN carriers.
By the time a land-based variant, known as the A-25 Shrike, became available in late 1943, the Western Allied air forces had abandoned dedicated dive-bombers. A majority of A-25s delivered to the US Army Air Forces were transferred to the US Marine Corps, which used the type only in one side campaign and non-combat roles. The British Royal Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force also cancelled substantial orders, retaining only a few aircraft for research purposes.
Nicknames for the aircraft included "Big-Tailed Beast" or just "Beast", "Two-Cee", and "Son-of-a-Bitch 2nd Class"; the latter nickname was derived from the name SB2C and the aircraft's reputation for having difficult handling characteristics.

Which is the Better Rally Car - 911 Turbo or GT3RS
Which is the ultimate daily driver, weekend warrior, rally car? The two we are comparing… It’s the Porsche 911 Turbo vs the Porsche 911 GT3RS! I think this is a very important debate in the current events world. War, tariffs, inflation… What we want to know is which car will give you that stupid smile as carve the mountain roads with your buddies! Having owned both these vehicles in many different generations, it seems as if Porsche is the IT car right now. So let’s dive in and talk about which is easier to mod, drive, and the better of the two.
Watch the Video Here
youtube
Just so you don’t get confused that I am another 25 year old, self help guru, offering how to get rich selling Amazon dog frisbee classes, let me explain why I think my experience on this topic matters. My Porsche journey started back in 2005 when I got my first P Car, a 996 Carrera that we later supercharged. I moved to a 996 Turbo, then a 2007 997 Turbo that we built to the max and ran it at Texas Mile in 2011 hitting 206.2mph which was a lot for a stock engine back then. I dabbled with a 997.2 Turbo S that I actually took and did the Targa NewFoundland Rally in. I found myself in a 2012 997.2 GT3RS Gray with red stickers which is one of those WHY DID I SELL IT CARS! Later I was able to actually build and order my first new new PCar which was a 2014 991 Turbo. I made the mistake and played with McLaren but then got my mind right and came back to Porsche getting an ultraviolet 2016 991 GT3RS. After 4 years of ownership I scored an allocation for a 992 GT3 which we built up with cool aero and tried 5 different exhausts on. And now most recently I have a 964. So not to swing the meat, but I would say I am a Porsche Enthusiast!
So lets first talk about the Porsche 911 Turbo. If we were going for a bargain or something under $100K, we would look at the 996 Turbo or 997 Turbo. But since this is a shootout with the GT3RS, lets compare the 991 variant as its still affordable and obtainable where as the 992 Turbo S is near $300K and a 992 GT3RS is pretty much unobtainable.
The Porsche 991 Turbo first came out in 2014 to the USA in a Turbo and Turbo S variant. One had 520 horsepower where the S had 560 horsepower. In 2017 the 991.2 came out with some slight changes to the exterior and a bump in 20 horsepower for both models. These cars you could configure with upgrades such as PCCB ceramic brakes, centerlock wheels, sunroof or no sunroof, and about 3000 different options for stitching and colors. Like all water cooled 911 Turbos, this car is AWD. As tested on our Mustang AWD Dyno, running 91 octane, the 991 TT made 450awhp and 485ft/lbs.
So what is great about the 991 Turbo as a daily driver and a weekend rally car. First off the 991 Turbo is easy to drive. The PDK transmission shifts like no other transmission when you are hammering through the gears in Sport or Sport Plus, or nice and smooth in standard for your stop and go freeway commute. As an option, the 18 way adjustable seats are very comfortable for long road trips but have enough bolster to keep you held tight on the mountain roads. Speaking of mountain roads, the AWD handles insane unlike no other car. Its really hard to mess up in a AWD car.
Where the 991 Turbo shines is in the modification world. With a simple ECU flash, the car can get up to almost 650bhp which is 130hp more than stock. There is no other car you can do an ECU flash to that makes this kind of gain and is still safe and reliable. I mean the 991 GT2RS does have 700bhp stock and its essentially the same engine and car! One of the common upgrades to the 991 Turbo is an exhaust. But even if you straight pipe it, the twin turbo 3.8L machine will never sound like a GT3 cup car. Never ever ever. They are not wired the same. A straight pipe Turbo sounds aggressive as hell when flat out passing you. With its active aero on the front and rear, getting more aggressive styling can be challenging. Since the 991 Turbo and the 991 GT3RS have essentially the same shell, sometimes people will actually do a GT2/GT3 RS style rear wing and GT3RS front bumper to make a 991 Turbo Cup. Which I have to be honest is wild to look at it. If you are hitting 150mph somewhere in mexico, I can see the need for more downforce.
But these cars look mean as hell with some upgraded wheels and being lowered. Although the stock 20″ wheels are light and great with their Michelin or Pirelli tires, its pretty common to upgrade the wheels to a 21×9 and 21×12 setup. The suspension is where the fun can be had for the utlimiate rally car. Having PASM which allows you to change the car from soft to stiff and the push of a button can be further enhanced with coilovers from Bilstein or adding a set of H&R Springs to the stock struts. But in some cases other coilovers such as KW Suspensions really outperform the stock so you can delete PASM and just run these. With a nice ride height and suspension setting, the AWD car can really carve. Other suspension options are things like sway bars to help induce more under or over steer, new toe links, control arms, and bushings.
Getting a 700HP 911 Turbo that looks great, handles great, and is comfortable for all types of use is very easy to do. For a vehicle that sits in the $150K range and you might spend another $25-$30K on upgrades is a good deal. No the doors don’t go up and down or a girl cant scream and call it a Lambo when its a mclaren as to most all Porsches look the same. But you will not find another car as comfortable and road worthy as the 991 Turbo.
  But is it the answer…
For about $50K more you can have Porsche’s race car in the box. The Porsche 991 GT3RS is exactly that. Made specifically in 2016 as the 991.1 or 2018-2019 as the 991.2, the GT3RS offers a world of entertainment outside of its roots on the track. For the layman, the Turbo and the GT3RS look the same side by side. They both have funny ducts in the rear fenders and one has a big tall wing. If you come across a non car guy they will say, “That’s a nice 911 Carrera”.
The 991 GT3RS in my opinion is the best damn car you will ever drive. Having owned one for 4 years, I personally put 10000 miles on one driving through some of the most amazing roads in the western USA. But this car has kinda become an “influencer” status symbol which would enrage the purists of the day who got allocations to take these on the track. But why is it so damn good! Well for the the car is rear wheel drive opposed to the the Turbos AWD. This means the car is lighter. Along with other weight saving materials such as a carbon hood, carbon trunk lid, magnesium roof, reduction in sound detonating, this car saves XXXXlbs for the Turbo. The car has Porsche Active Stability Management  or PASM suspension giving you the option for hard core track or semi comfortable street. This also includes for the performance. A valved exhaust that can be quiet or loud and 2 settings of Sport Mode. In fact the GT3RS is only available in a PDK because Porsche knows you cant drive it faster with a manual.
Sitting inside the GT3RS compared to the Turbo is identical. Literally they are the same car. One of the big differences would be the seats. 90% of the GT3 and GT3RS have the Sport Carbon Buckets. Which coming from racing seats are not that bad. These save a ton of weight compared to the Turbo reclineable seats. Long drives are not bad at all. You have all the same comforts as the turbo with the infotainment system. Maybe your sound system is not as good as Speaker choices for the RS really were not Porsche’s concerns. But you should be listening to is something else…
The sound of the 520 horsepower GT3RS through its 8000rpm is absolutely insane. And that is just with the stock exhaust. Upgrading the exhaust system not only saves weight but makes this car sound like you are at the Streets of Long Beach watching a Porsche Cup Car race. With a set of full race headers, the sound in my opinion rivals a V12 Lamborghini. Unlike the turbo though, adding power mods are not going to net you a ton of power gains. Full exhaust system you might see about 30 horsepower in the rpm range. The car already has high flow BMC filters, and you can do an ECU flash to actually gain low end power and even faster throttle response. Of course if you want to shoot big flames, something like Pops and Bangs is in order. With mods your GT3RS might be at around 550hp compared to a bolt-on upgraded 991 Turbo with 700 horsepower. However the handling and weight savings of the GT3RS will blow away that straightline power. Through the turns you can push a GT3RS to almost a point you feel unsafe and you still havent pushed it enough.
In the end, if I am looking for the ultimate daily/track/weekend rally car, Im going to go with the GT3RS. The Turbo can get you the horsepower you want, but eitherway you can still get to 150mph really quick. The handling and look of the RS is far superior and what you get for the money is something you can build, but will never out do its pedigree.
So that’s my take on which is the better car to mod and own. What’s your opinion? Leave me a comment below and tell me what you would do.
