author's note ~ first fic here hehe just a short one to start :) please please give me suggestions on what to write i wanna write sm. also this fic is basically just me writing about what i want rn :((
⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧˚ ˚୨୧⋆。˚ ⋆
14:49. you felt your vision crossing as you tried to keep your eyes open. just 11 more minutes till school was over. you sighed, even after that you couldn't go home and sleep. you still had some homework to do.
you straitened your posture in your chair, you couldn't let others see your exhaustion. you were supposed to be a role model in the class. sometimes, you really wished you weren't the class president.
the bell rang taking you out of a trance you didn't realize you were in. was i sleeping with my eyes open? you quickly packed up your things before having a quick talk with your teacher about plans for tomorrow’s class and if there were anything you needed to prepare. unfortunately, there was.
you felt your feet drag you out of the school, at snail pace. a hand grasped your shoulder stopping you in your spot. you knew who it was before you even turned around already leaning into their presence. “hi, ‘gumi” you smiled lightly.
“hi. you look tired.” megumi, your amazing but brutally honest boyfriend, said.
“i look that bad, huh?” you raised a brow almost daring him to continue.
“no, no, that's not what i meant!” he clarified, albeit slightly panicked. “you look like you could use a nap or coffee though…”
“both.” you whined, continuing your trudge out of the school.
“okay, let's go get coffee and a snack.” he smiled, taking your hand in his, leading the way.
your smile grew. you knew megumi wasn't the biggest person on pda (even if it was just hand holding) but you knew megumi was very attentive to your needs and knew in moments when you were overworked and exhausted…a little hand holding was what you needed.
the hand holding alone almost boosted your mood as you walked beside him.
you chatted lightly about each other’s day as you made your way to the coffee shop. what made you and megumi’s relationship so special was you both understood the value of talking to each other animatedly but as well quietly appreciating the small moments like this.
after you arrived, you ordered your drinks and food. megumi payed (well technically gojo did but so what), as you sat on a bench under a tree in the park across the street. shortly after megumi came over with the stuff. “thank you, love.” you breathed in the smell of the delicious roast.
after a couple minutes of you quietly drinking your drink, megumi said suddenly, “i love you.” you glanced at him in slight shock.
“what has gotten into you lately?” you asked with a chuckle, “i love you too, but that was random.”
“do i need a reason to say i love you?”
“well no but-”
“but what?” he leaned in closer. you turned your head blushing slightly. even after all this time, you still felt like you had a crush on him. he kissed the side of your head as he tucked you into his side. “you work too hard, yn. i worry sometimes and i want to make sure you know i'm here. just say the word.”
“oh, ‘gumi.” you felt tears treating to rise. “i know, thank you. you are amazing. how did i get so lucky?”
“i'm the lucky one.” he looked at you with his beautiful eyes and you couldn't help but lean in and give him a light kiss.
“you’re so cute.” you saw him blush making you giggle. suddenly you felt wide awake. if being class president somehow led you to moments like this, then you guess it's not too bad.

Clear Card Trivia 5 ~ Real life models of buildings featured in Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card
Tumblr media
Hello and welcome back to my column dedicated to Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card Arc!
After a rather "heavy" 4th one, for this 5th episode of the series I've chosen a topic that doesn't require to dig down into complex matters, but actually just admire the real life models of some of the buildings featured in Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card!
All of the buildings mentioned here have already been featured in a thread or tweet in my Twitter account, but I thought it was time to collect all the info relative to them in a single post, easy to browse through when needed! Maybe for some of you it'll be an interesting discovery!
Two of these models are old acquaintances, since they already existed in the old manga/anime but they came back, particularly one of them became pretty much a big deal in this arc, so they will be dutifully featured here.
Without further ado, let's explore these buildings under the cut! (I will also add useful info in case you want to visit them one day - many CCS fans already do this regularly!)
Tomoeda Middle School - The Gate Hotel by HULIC (ex Rissei Elementary School)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We start this review with one of the most iconic buildings in Clear Card Arc: ever since chapter 2 of the manga (because it didn't appear in chapter 1 yet) and episode 1 of the anime, this new building helped us getting accustomed with Sakura's new life as a middle schooler! Obviously I'm talking about the Tomoeda Middle School! It is a very nice building surrounded by cherry blossom trees, but the best part of it is that it's an existing building in real life!!
Let me introduce you to the ex Rissei Elementary School of Kyoto, which has been renovated in 2020 and turned into the current The Gate Hotel by HULIC. At the time of planning of Clear Card, the building was still known as the ex-Rissei Elementary School, although the building hadn't been used as a school since March 1993 (it had been turned into a multi-purpose space for the local community's gatherings and cultural activities). But don't be fooled: CLAMP didn't choose this building only because it's a pretty school - it is a very, very important historical building for the city of Kyoto (where CLAMP currently live!). This building is considered "the birthplace of cinema in Japan", since in 1897 an early film projector brought from Paris was installed in this school and an experimental showing of Lumière cinema was performed. Furthermore, this school also had the first swimming pool ever installed in an elementary school in Japan.
There's a very nice video explaining in details the history of this important building, subbed in English:
youtube
After a 10-years period where the building was used for cultural activities and festivals (particularly cinema oriented), in 2020 the renovation works ended and the place turned into a commercial building hosting a hotel (the current The Gate Hotel by Hulic), but also a library, events hall, restaurants, etc. enclosed in a complex called "Rissei Garden Hulic Kyoto". CLAMP also took interest in the renovation works, mentioning them in their social media at the time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The thing that immediately stands out is that, in their renovation works, they kept the original architecture intact and so the building still looks exactly like Sakura-chan's school! You can see them here beside eachother and it's really the same.
Tumblr media
If you are in Kyoto and want to do some "fan pilgrimage", as Japanese fans call it, you can reach this building at this address:
Rissei Garden Hulic Kyoto 310-2, Bizenjimacho, Kawaramachi Higashiiru, Takoyakushi-dori, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto 604-8023 JAPAN Official website with detailed info on how to reach there.
Clow/Eriol/Akiho's mansion - The Former Moji Mitsui Club
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Cardcaptor Sakura there's another iconic and mysterious building that had been pretty important in Sakura Card Arc already, but in Clear Card Arc becomes basically a matter of "life and death" for the new tenants who live in it: of course I'm talking about the mansion that first belonged to Clow Reed, then to Eriol Hiiragizawa, then to Akiho Shinomoto (along with Yuna D. Kaito) and ultimately is bought and managed again by Eriol! 😆
Kaito, the stoic and unfazed magician Kaito we all know, had been uncharacteristically nervous about obtaining Eriol's ex-house, since he was afraid that the previous owner had left some trick that would prevent them from obtaining it. This info was not revealed in the manga, but actually in a "behind the curtains" scene of the 1st Drama CD that came with volume 7 of the manga. Why was it so important for Kaito to get Eriol's ex-house? It's easy to deduce, once you remember that Eriol himself told Syaoran that his ex-house is a very good place to store and protect magical artifacts. And who carried a ridiculously powerful magical artifact inside herself, unaware of it? Akiho, of course. Eriol's house was probably the best chance Kaito had to protect Akiho from all the attempts of the Association+the Squids to take her away, back into their control (as we have seen in chapter 33).
This house was so important that the anime staff (along with scriptwriter Ohkawa-sensei) had to come up with a convoluted explanation as to why the house was back on its feet again when Akiho invited Sakura and Tomoyo in episode 8, since it had been completely destroyed to build an amusement park at the beginning of The Sealed Card movie!! (which, mind you, it's still canon!! They just suggested that Kaito brought that house back with his magic and the majority of the characters didn't realize the discrepancy).
Well, did you know that such an important mansion is an actually existing building? Let me introduce you to the former Moji Mitsui Club in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka prefecture!
Tumblr media
As you can see by comparing it with the pictures above, the anime version had to change some elements of the front here and there, but the manga counterpart is basically a tracing of the real existing building!! Just like the ex-Rissei Elementary School, this building isn't just aesthetically interesting, with its exposed timbers evocative of German design of its time. It was built in 1921 as an accommodation facility of Mitsui & Co., Ltd., Japan's first general trading company, but it's famous for having hosted none other than Albert Einstein and his wife, during their tour of Japan, in 1922!! In 1990 it was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is very interesting to note how the anime staff was pretty careful in keeping the same European vibe of the interiors of the existing building, with its big curtains, mantelpiece in each room, exposed wooden beams on the ceiling, dark brown half-wall wooden panelings.
Tumblr media
In the manga we can mainly see, of this house, the living room where Kaito and Akiho always chat and have tea (which is the same of the anime), and only limitedly we can see another room (some kind of studio) and Akiho's bedroom. We even get a tiny glance at Kaito's bedroom in chapter 80, but it's basically just the bed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one above is the "Einstein Memorial Room" and it replicates faithfully the suite where Einstein and his wife stayed at while visiting Fukuoka.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The teal colored wallpaper with all those flowers makes me think that the design of Akiho's room in the anime might have been inspired precisely by this room! ✨
If you find yourself in the vicinity of Fukuoka, you can't miss the opportunity to visit this building at this address:
Former Moji Mitsui Club 7-1 Minatomachi, Moji-ku, Kitakyushu City JAPAN *Admission fee required for the 2nd floor - Einstein's Memorial Room More info on this page.
Masaki's Summer House - Rokkaen
And now we get to what I consider one of the most beautiful buildings featured in Clear Card Arc: one of Masaki's houses shown in episode 20 of the anime and chapter 20 of the manga!
Tumblr media
This was seemingly Nadeshiko's favorite summer house and precisely for this reason, Masaki has planned to leave it as an inheritance to our Sakura-chan in the future! Truth to be told, he wanted to give it to her immediately, but Fujitaka understandably refused (for the time being) the inheritance of the house on his daughter's behalf. I don't even think Sakura knows of this, it's a matter the two men must have discussed in private. Regardless, dear CCS fans, this is a sneak peek into the future of our Sakura-chan and Syaoran-kun, as this might be the future nest of our two lovebirds. 🥰 And could a building of such importance and beauty be just a fictional house?? Of course not!!
Meet the Rokkaen, a gorgeous light blue European-style building in Kuwana, Mie prefecture!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The official Visit Mie website reports: "Completed in 1913, Rokkaen is an old European building with a four-story tower combined with a Japanese-style structure. It boasts a garden in the front complete with a pond. It was built by Josiah Conder, a British architect who also designed the Rokumeikan". Even this building, just like the former Moji Mitsui Club, was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 1997.
Tumblr media
As you can see, this is what the manga shows of this building, and at first glance it might seem like a different mansion because the tower doesn't appear, but worry not: it is still the very same building, only showing the left side of it! The tower on the right side is hidden by the trees (and the Japanese side of the building is missing).
I've checked a bit the interiors from the anime and manga, and while in the anime I didn't recognize particularly any room (the style is still similar though, particularly the half-wall panelings), in the manga there's one scene where it is incontrovertibly featured the sun room on the second floor: it's when Sakura wanders inside and eventually finds Nadeshiko's room!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From the accuracy of the drawing, we can assume Mokona sensei worked closely with different pictures of the real life building! 😉
At this link you can even take a virtual tour of Rokkaen! But if you really want to visit it in person, then take note of the address below:
Rokkaen 663-5 Kuwana City, Kuwana 511-0005 Mie Prefecture JAPAN *Admission fees required to visit the building More info on how to reach the place on this page, using an online translator.
Tomoeda Aquarium - Kaiyukan Aquarium
Tumblr media
As for Clear Card, this building only appears in the anime, but it is another one that got a second chance after having appeared in the old anime first: the Tomoeda Aquarium! I still remember how the choice to feature this building again for a very important episode was met with lots of criticism from the SyaoSaku fandom at the time of announcement of episode 9, only to end up making everyone fall in love with the portrayal of Sakura and Syaoran's first date ever. ✨ The magical and intimate atmosphere of an aquarium, with its soft lights and pretty colored fishes, got an unrivaled charm! Well, it seems the design of this magical place (where Kaito and Akiho will have a date of their own later on - only mentioned and manga-only, for now) was inspired by a real existing aquarium, the Kaiyukan Aquarium in Osaka!!
Tumblr media
And of course, for CCS, they couldn't choose an average aquarium: Kaiyukan was, when it first opened in 1990, the largest public aquarium in the entire world. Nowadays that record has been surpassed by other aquariums, but it's still one of the largest. Goes without saying, but the design was the same even in the old anime.
Not everything we saw of this aquarium in CCS comes from Kaiyukan, though. It seems like the iconic cylindrical tank (yes, the one that broke twice in the anime) might have been inspired by AquaDom, which was a very popular aquarium situated in the lobby of the Radisson Collection Hotel in Berlin, Germany. This aquarium held the World Record title for the biggest cylindrical aquarium in the world. Why do I talk in past tense? ...Well, this might seem like a joke, you might have heard about it or not, but sometimes fiction turns into reality and on December 16th, 2022 the big tank suddenly ruptured, destroying itself and propelling 1 million litres of water and 1.500 tropical fishes into nearby facilities and streets, with devastating damage. Only two people got hurt from the glass debris since this happened early in the morning (before 6 am), but if this happened even just an hour later, the human damage would've been so much worse, on top of everything else. Unfortunately, all the fishes died. ☹️ When the news came out, I saw a lot of Japanese fans relating the incident to what happened in CCS. 😅
Well, I can't leave information to visit AquaDom anymore, since it seems they don't have any intention to re-build the cylindrical aquarium, but I can certainly do so for the pretty Kaiyukan aquarium in Osaka, so if you visit nearby, definitely check it out! 😉

Old Library of Trinity College & The Eiffel Tower
Tumblr media
Alright, alright, I'll admit it: these two come straight from my obsession for YunaAki, hence why I've lumped them together. 😆 When I started getting more and more involved in the story of these two, I (over)analyzed all their panels together, in hope to understand them better and grasp some foreshadowings on the story. And chapter 39 of the manga is particularly dear to me because it showed some fragments of their travels together around the world. I got so interested in that scene in particular, that I started to look if I could recognize the places depicted. And while I had a hard time recognizing some of them, there are two places that are actually existing buildings in real life!
One is the old library of the Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland! When I saw that huge library in the corner of the manga page, I had to look for it. It looked so majestic and beautiful that it had to have a real life inspiration. And it took me to just type "biggest libraries in the world" on Google, to find it! As you can see from the panel circled in purple above, Mokona sensei reproduced (simplifying the design) the one that's called "The Long Room", the biggest and most important room of this impressive library, hosting around 200.000 old books in its 65 mt of length. There are also marble busts lining the room, which have been just vaguely sketched by Mokona sensei, but they do appear along with the seats in the middle of the aisle, indicated by my magenta arrow. The old library is just one building of the Library of the Trinity College, but it is also famous for housing The Book of Kells, which is "an illuminated manuscript and Celtic Gospel book in Latin, containing the four Gospels of the New Testament together with various prefatory texts and tables", as reported by Wikipedia. When Akiho was introduced, they didn't mention she had lived in Ireland, and even though this technically could be just a randomly referenced library and nothing else, it's nice to imagine Akiho and Kaito lived there too. But they DID mention that those two lived in France for a period, hence why the next feature was easier to spot:
Tumblr media
Despite the design is sliiiightly different (it's not a perfect tracing of the original, particularly where it seems to be corresponding to the second level deck), I think it's apparent this was meant to suggest the Eiffel Tower and the period they lived in France. The "atmosphere" of the scene also kinda fits it (Kaito always manages to get the best houses - like what do you mean they got an apartment with a view on La Tour Eiffel while they were living in France?? 😆). I don't think the Eiffel Tower needs any introduction, as it's one of the most famous and iconic towers in the world (even the Tokyo Tower is inspired to it!).
So let's just leave some basic info here in case you're traveling the world and want to visit the two locations above:
The old library of Trinity College Old Library, College Green, South-East Inner City, Dublin 2, D02 VR66 IRELAND *Admission fee and pre-booking info here. (Note that currently most of the books have been removed from the Long Room as part of a redevelopment project and will be moved back when works are done)
The Eiffel Tower Av. Gustave Eiffel, 75007 Paris, FRANCE *Admission fee required Additional access info here.
Special Feature / The Pictures in Sakura's Bedroom - Hong Kong
Tumblr media
And I've chosen to end this post with an extra: not all of them are buildings but it's something I've already featured in another post loooooooong time ago on this same blog, and I believe it deserves to be featured and collected here again, along with all the other buildings of this arc, for easier reference!!
Have you ever wondered what are the pictures pinned to the wall of Sakura's bedroom in the Clear Card anime? When episode 1 aired on January 7th 2018, some chinese fans were lightning-fast to spot the landscapes depicted in those mysterious photos - they might have looked like some random photos at first glance, but in this anime nothing is left to chance!!
They actually were a very conscious, deliberate choice of the anime staff: they're all referencing landscapes from Hong Kong!!! The chinese fans recognized all the places immediately (and from blurry shots of episode 1, at that!) but later on director Morio Asaka confirmed in the interview of the Starter Book that they were in fact postcards that Syaoran sent to Sakura from Hong Kong during the time they've spent apart between 6th grade and 1st year of middle school.
Tumblr media
When I first saw the post from the chinese fans, I remember my heart exploded with tenderness for SyaoSaku, but even more so when director Asaka confirmed it: it was a testament to the efforts made by our two lovebirds to keep their bond alive, waiting for the moment when they would finally be together again. And seeing that Sakura filled her personal space with Syaoran's home gave me a good idea of how much she had been missing him, and used those postcards to "wrap herself in his presence" whenever she needed to. I always appreciated so much this little "present" from the anime staff, always so careful in depicting feelings even through these little details. So let's review what each of those postcards depict (sorry for having to do it like this, but I ran out of pics allowed)
First column The Peak Tower Temple Street Ngong Ping 360 cable car Second column Victoria Harbour ferry Victoria Peak night view
For these ones, as they're just hidden cameos, I prefer leaving a convenient link for each of those places/attractions so you can delve far and wide into the interesting info provided by the official websites (all in English), and maybe even plan your next visit to Hong Kong!
And I believe that's everything, for what I could spot, but if you find other buildings in the Clear Card anime or manga that are clearly referencing real life buildings, let me know and I'll add them here to this post with credits!! ✨✨✨
Remember you can always check the other posts of this series through the hashtag #clear card trivia !
Are you already planning your next trip for a Clear Card pilgrimage?? 😆

Transformers: Mosaic #604 - "Just Like In The Movies"
Originally posted on May 30th, 2011
Story, Art - Waseem Bashar Script - Juan Pablo Osorio Letters, Edits - Franco Villa
deviantART | Seibertron | TFW2005 | BotTalk
wada sez: Now, according to the Transformers: The Lost Seasons deviantART account in the comments for this strip: “This is just the start of our bigger "Girls' Night Out" saga; there should be one more coming soon from Mosaic, the others are still in the making.” This was Bashar’s final Mosaic contribution; the two followups, focused on Road Rage and Chromia, were instead written solely by Juan Pablo Osorio. Weirdly, all of these strips are completely absent from the actual deviantART gallery for The Lost Seasons. Presumably, had further strips materialised, they would have followed a similar formula for other female characters, such as the rest of the “Female Autobots” from “The Search for Alpha Trion”. In that episode, Moonracer was paired up with Powerglide (presumably a last-minute toy-selling substitute for her namesake Sunstreaker); in this strip, it’s implied that Powerglide is busy with Astoria Carlton-Ritz, “The Girl Who Love Powerglide”. Tracks had a turn as a movie star in “Hoist Goes Hollywood”, where he wore the alien mask seen here. The Marvel Comics story “Monstercon from Mars!” is also cited as an influence. Moonracer’s disdainful description of the movie’s events is an oblique reference to the much-maligned Revenge of the Fallen. See below for Moonracer’s character model, transformation, and clean inks for the whole strip. Now, just to give one final piece of notice before tomorrow’s strip: you may want to block the tag “cw transphobia” to avoid it, if you’d rather not see content of that nature; speaking personally, I find it upsetting and wish I hadn’t read it, but I’m a slave to this archive, so I had no choice!

Jets on highways: Why the European military is expanding "dispersed" road exercises
"Let's say that the enemy's attack plans are based on the entry and destruction of an entire air wing in an airfield in one morning. Well, that won't happen if they [friendly aircraft] are scattered all over the country and moving from A to B and from C to D all the time," said Gary Waterfall, former vice-marechal of the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 10/23/2023 - 00:20am Military
In recent months, European nations have been intensifying the operational exercises of their fighters on temporary bases mounted on highways, dispersing their military air assets to show that they can operate anywhere with more agility. But what's the motivation?
On a cloudy day at the end of last month, two F-35A Lightning fighters belonging to the Norwegian military landed on a highway in central Finland - the first time that the conventional takeoff and landing variant of the jet managed to land on a normal road.
Tumblr media
Baana is an annual road base exercise of the Finnish Air Force. The lead responsibility of the exercise rotates every year among the Air Force units and now it is the Karelia Air Command's turn. The Air Force trains regularly operations from other than a home base to be capable of a quick dispersal across the country, when necessary. Operation at road bases is part of the training of all Air Force pilots.
The Baana 23 exercise includes daily air operations at the Tervo road base and Rissala Air Base from Tuesday to Thursday 19-21 September between 10 am and midnight, and on Friday 22 September between 10 am and 3 pm. The exercise's operational aims are to conduct highway strip take-offs and landings based on the flight training syllabus in day and night-time conditions. The exercise will see participation by Air Force F/A-18 fighters and other Finnish Air Force aircraft.
Apart from the Finnish Air Force fleet, aircraft from allied countries will be involved in the exercise. For the first time, the Royal Norwegian Air Force F-35s and Royal Air Force Eurofighter Typhoons will participate in the exercise. The Eurofighters will operate out of Rissala Air Base.
The landing was purposeful, of course, part of an increase in recent weeks of European military training for landing and taking off fighters on highways, which analysts said represents a renewed interest in “dispersed” operations after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The goal: to give air forces the ability to operate more independently and distantly from military bases and aviation fields that would be magnets for opposing attacks.
Tumblr media
"The purpose of the concept is to make it more challenging for an enemy to shoot down our aircraft when it is on the ground," said the head of the Royal Norwegian Air Force, Major General Rolf Folland, in a statement from the Norwegian Armed Forces at the time of the landing of the F-35A. "For such a concept to work, we must map all the possibilities and practice them."
The Swedish and Finnish armed forces already practice jet hunting operations from roads, but lately other European air forces have shown their own interest.
youtube
The Norwegian road landings and takeoffs with the F-35 were part of the multinational Baana exercise, which also saw the British Eurofighter Typhoon jets land and take off from a single-track road, something that one pilot described to the BBC as "very crazy."
Tumblr media
Last month we also witnessed the Polish Air Force successfully complete a series of takeoffs and landings on highways involving fighters, coaches and transport aircraft, during what is known as the training exercise of dispersed operations of Route 604 in the small town of Wielbark in northern Poland.
Tumblr media
“If you look at the Swedish or Finnish model of how they fly, they have a base area and within it they will have a series of runways, roads and airfields, where they can disperse and operate,” said Gary Waterfall, a retired lieutenant of the Royal Air Force (RAF) from the United Kingdom. "They can take off from these places, land in a different place, turn the plane, download, upload data, rearm, take off and leave again."
He emphasized that in "an era of ultra-precision attacks", dispersed operations provide agility if the bases are under threat or if entry into the airspace around the bases is denied by an enemy.
"Let's say that the enemy's attack plans are based on the entry and destruction of an entire air wing in an airfield in one morning. Well, that won't happen if they [friendly aircraft] are scattered all over the country and moving from A to B, from C to D all the time," he said.
And in addition to solving the practical problems in road operations, analyst Justin Bronk said that the exercises also send a message to a target audience in the east.
Tumblr media
“The motivation behind operations is, in part, to gather data on the opportunities and pitfalls of road operations for air forces that have not done so for a long time, and in part, to signal to Russia that they are taking serious measures to make it more difficult for their forces to reach a base in a major war,” said Bronk, a senior researcher of air power and technology at the Royal United Services Institute, a UK defense think tank.
Similarly, Douglas Barrie, a senior member of the military aerospace area of the International Institute of Strategic Studies, based in the United Kingdom, added that there is "an element of message" aligned with the wave of new training operations on highways, which is equivalent to the NATO air forces telling Russia: "Do not assume that just because you have destroyed our main operational bases, you will make my Air Force ineffective. It's about aggravating the challenge of selecting targets for the other side."
Tumblr media
He added that Russia discovered in Ukraine that "disabling" an enemy airfield, or the aircraft on it, is not a "simple task".
Ultimately, Waterfall said, scattered operations do not necessarily mean that air forces can prevent opponents from attacking them, but will “change their calculation” on whether or not an attack is launched.
Training of dispersed operations from Poland
For the Polish Air Force inspector, Major General Ireneusz Nowak, the fighting in Ukraine has already proven the need to be able to operate aircraft far from their usual base.
Poland's Exercise 604 specifically evaluated the ability of the air and ground crews of F-16, Su-22, MiG-29, M-346, M28, C295M and C-130 to fly to from an alternative temporary facility, based on a scenario in which a base is inaccessible. The exercise took place on Route 604, a public road used daily by car traffic, but temporarily closed to the event.
“Ukraine's findings show that permanent air bases will be the first target of the attacks,” Nowak said. “By conducting a defensive operation, as is now the case in Ukraine, our air forces must be able to survive. And this can be achieved by dispersing our aircraft, and that's what the DOLs [Drogowy Odcinek Lotniskowy, stretches of public roads designated as potential airstrips] are for. A concept of Agile Combat Employment (ACE) requires the preparation of several dozen locations [such as DOL Wielbark] across the country."
youtube
For the exercise, the highest-ranking Polish fighter pilots were the first to conduct takeoffs and landings on public roads.
“For several reasons, the commanders landed first... [mainly] to demonstrate good leadership,” said Polish Air Force Inspector Major General Ireneusz Nowak. "I don't want, and I say this very clearly and decisively, in the Polish Air Force, commanders behind tables. In aviation, you quickly lose touch with what is happening in combat units and it is difficult to make the right decisions when you are just a Power Point expert sitting at your desk in Warsaw."
More than 40 pilots were trained in operations on public highways during the exercise of Route 604.
While the pilots learned their functions, the air defenses also trained to "protect" the assets against simulated attacks by the enemy. Air defenders operating a Pilica VSHORAD missile and artillery system were trained, facing MiG-29 Fulcrums as "aggressors". The exercise was also protected against terrorist attacks, drones or enemy aircraft by Pilica systems, also having to fight a UCAV TB2 Bayraktar, as well as an S-70i Black Hawk helicopter.
Next year, the Polish Air Force expects to conduct night operations on public roads that may also involve the newly acquired KAI FA-50GF training jets.
Expect road landings to become more common
Nowak said there is a "desire" for similar exercises to be held annually in Poland, and other training exercises for dispersed operations in collaboration with NATO partner air forces.
Tumblr media
In the long term, broad international cooperation is expected, including collaboration with Scandinavian countries, well versed in dispersed operations. Pilots from other allied countries will also be invited to Poland for joint training exercises and learning on how to operate in Polish conditions.
“In times of peace, the exercises on the motorways would imply the closure of important transport routes and, in times of war, the same motorways will be a very important element of the logistical supply of troops, which also excludes the interruption, even if only temporary, of such important supply arteries,” explained Lieutenant General Wieslaw Kukula, general commander of the Polish Armed Forces.
Tumblr media
Poland's commitment to modernize roads and collaborate with other NATO partners in dispersed operations in the future once again points to increased deterrence in the face of Russian aggression.
“There is a certain degree of urgency throughout NATO to do this because Russia has given a warning sign,” Waterfall said. “I think it's very good to see why the day you don't want to do this is the day you'll have to do it.”
More generally, Barrie suggested that the increase in dispersed operations is a "sign of the times" due to Russia's "very abrasive relationship" with Europe.
“I don't think there's any reason why we don't see the Air Force's effort to improve resilience and survivability. In the context of NATO, people will analyze all the options,” he said.

SAINT GREGORY THE DIALOGIST, POPE OF ROME (604)
Tumblr media
Saint Gregory the Dialogist, Pope of Rome, was born in Rome around the year 540. His grandfather was Pope Felix, and his mother Sylvia (November 4) and aunts Tarsilla and Emiliana were also numbered among the saints by the Roman Church. Having received a most excellent secular education, he attained high government positions.
Leading a God-pleasing life, he yearned for monasticism with all his soul. After the death of his father, Saint Gregory used his inheritance to establish six monasteries. At Rome he founded a monastery dedicated to the holy Apostle Andrew the First-Called, where he received monastic tonsure. Later, on a commission of Pope Pelagius II, Saint Gregory lived for a while in Constantinople. There he wrote his Commentary on the Book of Job.
After the death of Pope Pelagius, Saint Gregory was chosen to the Roman See. For seven months he would not consent to accept this service, considering himself unworthy. He finally accepted consecration only after the persistent entreaties of the clergy and flock.
Wisely leading the Church, Saint Gregory worked tirelessly in propagating the Word of God. Saint Gregory compiled the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts in the Latin language, which before him was known only in the verbal tradition. Affirmed by the Sixth Ecumenical Council, this liturgical service was accepted by all the Orthodox Church.
He zealously struggled against the Donatist heresy; he also converted the inhabitants of Brittany, pagans and Goths, who had been adhering to the Arian heresy, to the True Faith.
Saint Gregory has left behind numerous written works. After the appearance of his book, DIALOGUES CONCERNING THE LIFE AND MIRACLES OF THE ITALIAN FATHERS (DIALOGI DE VITA ET MIRACULIS PATRUM ITALIORUM), the saint was called “Dialogus.” His PASTORAL RULE (or LIBER REGULAE PASTORALIS) was well-known. In this work, Saint Gregory describes the model of the true pastor. His letters (848), dealing with moral guidance, have also survived.
Saint Gregory headed the Church for thirteen years, ministering to all the needs of his flock. He was characterized by an extraordinary love of poverty, for which he was granted a vision of the Lord Himself.
As he is known, Pope Saint Gregory the Great died in the year 604, and his relics rest in the cathedral of the holy Apostle Peter in the Vatican.
VENERABLE SYMEON, THE NEW THEOLOGIAN (1022)
Tumblr media
Saint Simeon the New Theologian was born in the year 949 in the city of Galatea (Paphlagonia), and he was educated at Constantinople. His father prepared him for a career at court, and for a certain while the youth occupied a high position at the imperial court. When he was fourteen, he met the renowned Elder Simeon the Pious at the Studion Monastery, who would be a major influence in his spiritual development. He remained in the world for several years preparing himself for the monastic life under the Elder’s guidance, and finally entered the monastery at the age of twenty-seven.
Saint Simeon the Pious recommended to the young man the writings of Saint Mark the Ascetic (March 5) and other spiritual writers. He read these books attentively and tried to put into practice what he read. Three points made by Saint Mark in his work “On the Spiritual Law” (see Vol. I of the English Philokalia) particularly impressed him. First, you should listen to your conscience and do what it tells you if you wish your soul to be healed (Philokalia, p. 115). Second, only by fulfilling the commandments can one obtain the activity of the Holy Spirit. Thirdly, one who prays only with the body and without spiritual knowledge is like the blind man who cried out, “Son of David, have mercy upon me” (Luke 18:38) (Philokalia, p. 111). When the blind man received his sight, however, he called Christ the Son of God (John 9:38).
Saint Simeon was wounded with a love for spiritual beauty, and tried to acquire it. In addition to the Rule given him by his Elder, his conscience told him to add a few more Psalms and prostrations, and to repeat constantly, “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy upon me.” Naturally, he heeded his conscience.
During the day, he cared for the needs of people living in the palace of Patricius. At night, his prayers grew longer and he remained praying until midnight. Once, as he was praying in this way, a most brilliant divine radiance descended upon him and filled the room. He saw nothing but light all around him, and he was not even aware of the ground beneath his feet.
It seemed to him that he himself became light. Then his mind rose upward to the heavens, and he saw a second light brighter than the light which surrounded him. Then, on the edge of this second light, he seemed to see Saint Simeon the Pious, who had given him Saint Mark the Ascetic to read.
Seven years after this vision, Saint Simeon entered the monastery. There he increased his fasting and vigilance, and learned to renounce his own will.
The Enemy of our salvation stirred up the brethren of the monastery against Saint Simeon, who was indifferent to the praises or reproaches of others. Because of the increased discontent in the monastery, Saint Simeon was sent to the Monastery of Saint Mamas in Constantinople.
There he was tonsured into the monastic schema, and increased his spiritual struggles. He attained to a high spiritual level, and increased his knowledge of spiritual things through reading the Holy Scriptures and the writings of the Fathers, as well as in conversation with holy Elders.
Around the year 980, Saint Simeon was made igumen of the monastery of Saint Mamas and continued in this office for twenty-five years. He repaired and restored the monastery, which had suffered from neglect, and also brought order to the life of the monks.
The strict monastic discipline, for which Saint Simeon strove, led to great dissatisfaction among the brethren. Once, after Liturgy, some of the monks attacked him and nearly killed him. When the Patriarch of Constantinople expelled them from the monastery and wanted to hand them over to the civil authorities, Saint Simeon asked that they be treated with leniency and be permitted to live in the world.
About the year 1005, Saint Simeon resigned his position as igumen in favor of Arsenius, while he himself settled near the monastery in peace. There he composed his theological works, portions of which appear in the Philokalia.
The chief theme of his works is the hidden activity of spiritual perfection, and the struggle against the passions and sinful thoughts. He wrote instructions for monks: “Theological and Practical Chapters,” “A Treatise on the Three Methods of Prayer,” (in Vol. IV of the English Philokalia) and “A Treatise on Faith.” Moreover, Saint Simeon was an outstanding church poet. He also wrote “Hymns of Divine Love,” about seventy poems filled with profound prayerful meditations.
The sublime teachings of Saint Simeon about the mysteries of mental prayer and spiritual struggle have earned him the title “the New Theologian.” These teachings were not the invention of Saint Simeon, but they had merely been forgotten over time.
Some of these teachings seemed unacceptable and strange to his contemporaries. This led to conflict with Constantinople’s church authorities, and Saint Simeon was banished from the city. He withdrew across the Bosphorus and settled in the ancient monastery of Saint Makrina.
The saint peacefully fell asleep in the Lord in the year 1021. During his life he received the gift of working miracles. Numerous miracles also took place after his death; one of them was the miraculous discovery of his icon.
His Life was written by his cell-attendant and disciple, Saint Nicetas Stethatos.
Since March 12 falls during Great Lent, Saint Simeon’s Feast is transferred to October 12.

ISAIAH 4:2-5:7
2 In that day the Branch of the Lord shall be beautiful and glorious; And the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and appealing For those of Israel who have escaped. 3 And it shall come to pass that he who is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy—everyone who is recorded among Jerusalem's people. 4 When the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and purged the blood of Jerusalem from her midst, by the spirit of judgment and by the spirit of burning, 5 then the Lord will create above every dwelling place of Mount Zion, and above her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day and the shining of a flaming fire by night. For over all the glory, there will be a covering. 6 And there will be a tabernacle for shade in the daytime from the heat, a place of refuge, and a shelter from storm and rain.
1 Now let me sing to my Well-beloved A song of my Beloved regarding His vineyard: My Well-beloved has a vineyard On a fruitful hill. 2 He dug it up and cleared out its stones, And planted it with the choicest vine. He built a tower in its midst and also made a winepress in it. He expected it to bring forth good grapes, but it brought forth wild grapes. 3 “And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, Judge, please, between Me and My vineyard. 4 What more could have been done to My vineyard That I have not done in it? Why then, when I expected it to bring forth good grapes, Did it bring forth wild grapes? 5 And now, please let Me tell you what I will do to My vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it shall be burned, And break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down. 6 I will lay it waste; It shall not be pruned or dug, but briers and thorns shall come
. I will also command the clouds That they rain no rain on it.” 7 For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, And the men of Judah are His pleasant plant. He looked for justice, but behold oppression; For righteousness, but behold, a cry for help.
GENESIS 3:21-4:7
21 Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them. 22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”— 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken. So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.
1 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man from the Lord.” 2 Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. 3 And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord. 4 Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering, 5 but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell. 6 So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? 7 “If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”

I just realized that the mirrored scenes of the camp talk and content ultra dad mode vs the distracted Chris secret conversation both happen with someone from Bucks past coming back. The first being Abby the ladder Connor with a weird request.
It's probably nothing and not meant to mean anything but I find it comical that even when unintended Buddie has a pattern
Also sort of wild that when a perceived love came back, Buck was at peak happiness if you will. That time frame was my favorite for Buddie. He just addressed her with hurt and confused regard IMHO. Even if he was unaware of it at the time he was happy to walk back to his new family.
This time years later, therapy under his belt, and having successfully left a relationship. He is more unhappy then ever and it's because also just IMHO the Buddie relationship never fully righted to their pre Anna model but also didn't continue to the natural dating it would have had Anna not come along. Although without Anna we may never had got an Eddie gay panic attack storyline.
Hi Nonnie! Thank you for this lovely ask! ^u^
I think the interesting thing about unintentional parallels in writing is that they arise from something in the subconscious mind of writers being at work. Meaning that if you have a certain notion about a character/relationship, even if you don't think up a specific parallel intentionally, in order to express the notion, you'll find yourself revisiting similar themes, even similar words and phrases. And that's gonna give rise to parallels that might not be intended, but are still meaningful, precisely because they reveal something about the character/relationship. That's why we all go so mad over parallels, don't we? 'Coz we intuitively feel the repetition points to significance.
Which is to say, yes! There is meaning here as well. Both characters from Buck's past come back to shake him up and make him question where he is in life, what he has and what he wants. In one case, the conversation about Christopher's camp in 318 plays out to demonstrate what Buck has in his life even before he gets to the point of questioning it, but we as viewers can correctly read it 'coz we've seen Abby on the train and we know she's about to run into him. In contrast, in 604 he runs into Connor before Eddie notices his silence in regards to Chris, so Buck being uncharacteristically absent as Christopher's co-parent points to him already questioning some major things about his life.
I personally think that Buddie did go back to how things were before Ana, maybe even closer (see my 601 meta on why I think the kitchen scene there shows that), but I do think the closer they get, the harder it is not to be together. It's like I said in this ask reply, an 'almost' can ache so much more than 'nothing'. The closer they get without acknowledging that their feelings aren't strictly platonic, the harder it's going to get for them. Which I think is a very similar notion to what you were saying? They're caught in the "in between" and there's no harder place to be in, you become more aware of what you miss the closer you are to your destination, being able to sense its proximity, but not being close enough yet to see or touch it. Which is exactly what makes Buck aware enough that he said in 403 already that he's fine, he just wants to be finer. He was on his way, both our boys are on their way, they just took a small detour in the shape of Ana and Taylor (*insert infamous reference to Buddie's talk about construction on Sunset in 408 here*), and sometimes detours are needed when the journey is a complex, challenging one...
I hope you have a great day, lovely! And here is my ask tag! xoxox

Chapter Tutorial 1
Chapter Tutorial 2
TSIS, Ch. 2: Summarizing
Summarizing is more than just repeating what the author says.
Summarizing is "balancing what the original author is saying with the writer's own focus" (32) or "in a way that fits with what you want to say" (39).
On the one hand, summarize the author's ideas correctly to provide the best evidence for your own idea.
On the other hand, you don't have to cover EVERYTHING they say. Pick and choose the ideas that you are the most interested in, then summarize those in a way that sets up your own idea.
Just like for TS and "return sentences," keep returning to the summary as you set up each step of your own idea; this will help to highlight your newness and originality compared to the author. Signal verbs (42).
Tumblr media
Model TS to IS: Although Graff's ideas about using students' personal interests as areas of academic focus sound good, this would, in fact, harm several categories of students. For instance, underprepared students sometimes need to learn more about reading, writing, thinking, organization, and evidence to understand something like trout fishing "through academic eyes." On the other hand, motivated and highly prepared students are sometimes more interested in their ultimate career trajectory than, say, explaining the culture of youth baseball tournaments.
During our Reading Activity Discussion today, the Lehman and Graff groups should try to set up a TS to IS move along these lines after discussing TS and IS.
Reading Discussion Activity: Lehman and Opoku-Agyeman
Team 1: What is Lehman's main idea? Could you restate it in your own words (TS)? What kind of evidence does he use to support it? What do you think (IS)? Could you develop a TS to IS sentence (or several)?
Team 2: What is Opoku-Agyman and Addo's main idea? Could you restate it in your own words (TS)? What kind of evidence do they use to support it? What do you think (IS)? Could you develop a TS to IS sentence (or several)?
Team 3: Look up as many recent stats about current student debt levels, how they compare to other types of debt, and any recent news about student debt that you can find (government programs and legislation, etc.).
Team 4: Think of the different kinds of "moves" the authors we have read use. "Moves" refers to HOW they make their argument, not WHAT they are saying. HOW do they set up their ideas in order to convince you?
Homework
Outline 1 Prep: (1) Which reading do you want to work on and why? (2) What is your plan of attack? (agree but adjust a little...agree but adjust a lot...totally disagree and offer an alternative...other, different idea but related) (3) Choose 3 quotes and mark them up to plan how to make your TS to IS move.
Read TSIS, Ch. 3, “‘’AS HE HIMSELF PUTS IT’: The Art of Quoting,” pp. 47-55.
Complete Ch. 3 Tutorial.
