Deeply felt silences might be said to be the core of our Kofon religion. During these times, the nature within ourselves found unity with the nature of earth. This is not ‘closeness to nature’ but rather an immersion in the common nature which pervades all life—plants, animal, human.

Folorunso Alakija (July 15, 1951) is a Nigerian businesswoman who is involved in various industries such as fashion, oil, and printing. She is known for being one of the richest Black women in the world.
She was born in Ikorodu, Lagos State. She was from a sizable family due to her father, Chief L.A. Ogbara, having been married eight times and fathering 52 children. Alakija was his second surviving child and her mother, a fabric merchant, was his first wife. At the age of seven, she and her younger sister Doyin were sent to study abroad at Dinorben School for Girls in Northern Wales. The pair of sisters attended the school for four years before they returned to Nigeria at the request of their parents, who did not want the girls’ African values, traditions, and culture to be lost. She continued her studies at Muslim High School in Sagamu, Ogun State, Nigeria. She ventured abroad again, this time to Pitman’s Central College in London to pursue an education in secretarial studies.
She began working in Lagos as an executive secretary and worked at FinBank for several years. She studied fashion design in the UK for one year. She established Supreme Stitches, her fashion house, in a three-bedroom apartment in Surulere, Lagos. She was one of the best designers in the country and became recognized for endorsing Nigerian culture through her works and clothing.
She expanded her business interests and applied for the allocation of an oil prospecting license in May 1993. Her company, Famfa Limited, was granted the license to explore for oil on a 617,000-acre block, known as OPL 216. She entered into a joint venture agreement with Star Deep Water Petroleum, a subsidiary of Texaco, and appointed the company as a technical advisor for the exploration of the license. Some 40 percent of her 100 percent stake was transferred to Star Deep.
She married Modupe Alakija (1976), a lawyer and the couple raised four boys together. She is known for her philanthropic work through the Rose of Sharon Foundation. She was appointed as the vice chairman of the Nigerian National Heritage Council and Endowment for the Arts. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Read-Alike Friday: The History of a Difficult Child by Mihret Sibhat
The History of a Difficult Child by Mihret Sibhat
Wisecracking, inquisitive, and bombastic, Selam Asmelash is the youngest child in her large, boisterous family. Even before she is born, she has a wry, bewitching omniscience that animates life in her Small Town in southwestern Ethiopia in the 1980s. Selam and her father listen to the radio in secret as the socialist military junta that recently overthrew the government seizes properties and wages civil war in the North. The Asmelashes, once an enterprising, land-owning family, are ostracized under the new regime. In the Small Town where they live, nosy women convene around coffee ceremonies multiple times a day, the gossip spreading like wildfire.
As Selam’s mother, the powerful and relentlessly dignified Degitu, grows ill, she embraces a persecuted, Pentecostal God and insists her family convert alongside her. The Asmelashes stand solidly in opposition to the times, and Selam grows up seeking revenge on despotic comrades, neighborhood bullies, and a ruthless God. Wise beyond her years yet thoroughly naive, she contends with an inner fury, a profound sadness, and a throbbing, unstoppable pursuit of education, freedom, and love.
Patience is a Subtle Thief by Abi Ishola-Ayodeji
For as long as she can remember, Patience Adewale, the eldest daughter of Chief Kolade Adewale, has been waiting for confirmation that she is loved, that there is a place where she truly belongs. Patience lives a sheltered life within the secure walls of the family's mansion in Ibadan, but finds no comfort from her distant father and stepmother Modupe. Her only ally is her younger sister, yet even Margaret's love and support cannot overcome Patience's insecurity and uncertainty.
More than anything, Patience wants to know why her father and uncle banished her mother from their compound years ago--and whether her mother is even alive. Determined to discover the truth, Patience embarks on a desperate search to find her mother. Answers begin to surface when she moves to Lagos for university and unexpectedly reconnects with her cousin Kash.
Kash and his friend Emeka are petty thieves with an opportunity to make a big score. To pull it off they need help--and enlist Patience and Emeka's straight-arrow brother, Chike, to become partners in their scheme. The thieves' plan is to quit after this job. But unforeseen events lead to unexpected consequences--and demand a price from Patience that may be too steep to pay.
The Five Sorrowful Mysteries of Andy Africa by Stephen Buoro
Andrew Aziza is a fifteen-year-old boy living in Kontagora in Northern Nigeria. He lives with his secretive mother, Gloria, and spends his days about town with his droogs, Slim and Morocca. He's contemplating the larger questions with his teacher Zahrah and his equally brilliant friend Fatima, a Hausa-Fulani girl who clearly has feelings for him. Together they discuss mathematical theorems, Black power, and what Andy has deemed the curse of Africa.
Inevitably, Andy falls hopelessly in love with the first white girl he lays eyes on: Eileen, Father McMahon's niece. But at the church party held to celebrate her arrival, multiple crises loom. The first is that an unfamiliar man there claims to be Andy's father. The second is that an anti-Christian mob has gathered, headed for the church. In the ensuing havoc and its aftermath, Andy is forced to reckon with his identity and desires and determine how to live on the so-called Cursed Continent.
Exit West by Mohsin Hamid
In a country teetering on the brink of civil war, two young people meet—sensual, fiercely independent Nadia and gentle, restrained Saeed. They embark on a furtive love affair and are soon cloistered in a premature intimacy by the unrest roiling their city. When it explodes, turning familiar streets into a patchwork of checkpoints and bomb blasts, they begin to hear whispers about doors—doors that can whisk people far away, if perilously and for a price. As the violence escalates, Nadia and Saeed decide that they no longer have a choice. Leaving their homeland and their old lives behind, they find a door and step through.
Exit West follows these characters as they emerge into an alien and uncertain future, struggling to hold on to each other, to their past, to the very sense of who they are. Profoundly intimate and powerfully inventive, it tells an unforgettable story of love, loyalty, and courage that is both completely of our time and for all time.

Oshún Sweet Jar & Work
Tumblr media
This works very well, but now I modify it by putting the jar on a white plate and I surround the jar with rose petals, marigolds, and pumpkin seeds with my big chunk of citrine. Add coral if desired. Oshún loves her coral hair combs!
Jar ingredients:
Sugar
Honey
Red Rose petals
Sunflower petals
Use mostly sugar, especially if you want to draw someone. Its faster. Honey can be slow as well as molasses. Use just enough honey to glue it up nicely. Concentrate on positive energy. Envision Oshún's all-encompassing love.
First, light some Sandalwood incense, its her favorite! Take a piece of parchment and write your request on it, or draw Oshún's ajitena on it. You can write names and birth dates too. Set it below the jar. Anoint a pink candle with some Sandalwood oil. Empower it with your breath and give it your loving energy. Light it and affix the candle to the jar lid.
Tell Oshún that you've made this jar and created this spell for her to draw love to you. This step is crucial with ALL Orishas. Always tell them what you are doing and say: "If I have your permission to do so, I'd like to use this (item) dedicated to you to draw love (money, protection, etc)." This makes your spell work right every time. Orishas appreciate some foreknowledge about things they may do and the benefits for them.
Let your energy flow to the jar and candle for a good 10 minutes or so. Thank Oshún, ask her to bless you throughout your day. Let the candle burn down, but check on it. A chime burns for about 90-120 minutes, depending on length and width. You can use a yellow or gold candle if you prefer.
This spell can also be used to make passionate times with your partner and sweeten them in general.
This spell packs a wallop!! Works for me every time. You should get some sunflowers and offer them at the river for Oshún. You will be heard always. Oshún is nothing but consistent. 💖 Just remember to show her the utmost respect and to taste the honey that you use in the jar before you put it in!!
Modupe ó!

Shrimp shell material may control space drug delivery
By sending nanoemulsion formulations on a space flight, scientists are investigating whether chitosan—a material derived from shrimp and widely used to control the release of medications—performs well in controlling medicine delivery when exposed to zero gravity. Their preliminary results suggest that drugs needed by astronauts can be delivered effectively in space.
A team from the University of Adelaide working with the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Institute of Aerospace Medicine, conducted the StarMed experiment by exposing six small glass vials on a space flight and then analyzing the stability of the emulsion on its return to Earth. The same number of identical control vials were on the ground in both Europe and Adelaide.
Nanoemulsions comprise oil droplets (0.0001 mm in size) that are dispersed into an aqueous solution, with the oil droplets being the carrier of melatonin in this experiment.
Professor Volker Hessel, who is the Processes Program Leader at the ARC Center of Excellence in Plants for Space and Research Director at the University of Adelaide's Andy Thomas Center for Space Resources, led the experiments with Ph.D. student Modupe Adebowale, of the University of Adelaide and University of Nottingham.
"The first aim of the experiment was to find out how the stability of the dispersed (oil in water) phases behaves under the changed gravitational conditions," said Professor Hessel.
"We also aimed to find out how the controlled release of the encapsulated drug melatonin behaves under the changed gravitational conditions, with one sample of nano-oil droplets coated by a chitosan layer.
"In the long-term, the goal is to develop stable nanoemulsions with advanced controlled-release kinetics for medical use in space and on planets colonized by humans for long-term habitation."
The University of Adelaide conducted the experiment with the DLR's Dr. Jens Hauslage. As part of its MAPHEUS 15 mission, DLR launched a sounding rocket from northern Sweden that contained 21 scientific experiments from organizations around the world.
"In this collaboration, it was shown again that sounding rockets are a cost-effective and reliable test platform for experiments and technologies under micro- and altered-gravity conditions for preparation of low Earth orbit and deep space missions. Especially with regard to human exploration and life on the moon and Mars, these experiments are an important preparation to ensure the health of humans in space," said Dr. Hauslage.
DLR's research rocket, launched in November 2024, was the 600th to lift off from the Esrange rocket base.
"As oil droplets deliver the drug too fast, we added a chitosan layer around them, which is a natural, renewable material derived from chitin that forms the shell of shrimps and other crustaceans. This layer acts like a barrier and regulates the release of the melatonin drug," said Professor Hessel.
Astronauts are known to suffer from bone loss, which can be as much as 25% during a longer stay in space. The drug melatonin reduces the bone loss and has many other positive beneficial health effects.
In order to provide melatonin to astronauts at the right time and dose, a formulation is needed, which means the drug must be put into a matrix that controls its release. Liquid formulations are increasingly taken by astronauts: about 40% of the formulations at the International Space Station are liquid.
"Our experiments are testing whether the chitosan-layered nanoemulsions are stable in space and function well for melatonin delivery," said Professor Hessel.
"Preliminary data suggest that the droplet size and distribution of nanoemulsions without chitosan coating increased while nanoemulsions with chitosan coating did not change at all. And small, more uniform droplets are desired for better uptake and medical outcomes.
"If confirmed, this would mean that microgravity nanoemulsions with chitosan coating are more stable. It would also mean that vibrations hardly affected the quality of our nanoemulsions with and without chitosan coating."
As well as the StarMed experiment, the University of Adelaide's MiniWeed experiment, conducted in collaboration with La Trobe University, will test how altered gravity affects duckweed—a plant identified as a potential food source for astronauts.
