Hey, you guys want a barely-filtered view into my psyche?

About a month ago I wrote up a ... Rather long diatribe about two of my main ocs, and what their whole deal is.

If a detailed look into a creator's view on characterisation, theming, coding and the intersection of gender, sexuality and autism sounds interesting to you: here you go!

Chrome and Tabitha have been rattling around my brain since 2015 and have as such been slowcooked throughout, so it's also somewhat of a retrospective on my end too.

The general topics (along with a straight-up overview of their in-universe backstories) are how their differing sexualities, thoughts on masculinity, and Mental Situations interact to form their dynamic and relationship, with follow-ups about their real-life origins, how those inform them, and how much I'm clearly projecting.

I am a Yume Nikki fan now, so here is my take on whatever the fuck's going on with the monochrome sisters and Shittai-san

Okay so a few months before the game events, Madotsuki was sort-of-friends with a girl who was a year older than her (fifteen). This was Monoe's irl counterpart. She and her sister, Monoko's irl counterpart, were kind of outcasts because they were... incredibly weird and lowkey psychotic.

Monoko was a fan of gorey slasher flicks despite only being like ten, and spent a lot of time doodling and thinking about weird shit. Madotsuki had a soft spot for her because she could relate to that, just her thoughts and drawings weren't that gorey.

Monoe, on the other hand was lowkey a bitch and very passive aggressive. She had low empathy for other people, and true crime fascinated her. She was more squeamish than her sister though, and preferred psychological horror to slasher type stuff.

Anyway, Monoe and Matdotsuki became friends bc they were both outcasts.

So at some specific point the three girls were biking home from somewhere. It starts to rain heavily. Monoe doesn't want to put up with that shit, and so when she spots a random unlocked car pulled over at the side of the road she suggests they steal it.

Monoko was happy enough to do so (rain) but Madotsuki was hesitant to steal. Monoe just shrugged her off and told her she could just keep cycling in the rain, lol. She then jetted off with Monoko in the passenger seat.

They went slow enough due to the storm and the fact that Monoe didn't actually know how to drive, so Madotsuki wasn't that far behind them.

At some point they came across a traffic light. Seeing as it was green and Monoe was more focused on the music they had blasting on the radio, they didn't see the guy trying to dash across the road ahead of them.

They ran him over, pretty much killing him immediately. Rip guy, we hardly knew ye. Monoe stops the car, and she's more in awe that she just killed a man than anything else. Monoko is thrilled to finally see a dead body in real life.

Madotsuki catches up with them after a few minutes and is appalled. She gets into a huge argument with Monoe that ends with her yelling that she hopes they get their karma for stealing, killing and not caring.

She cycles off, and the sisters get back into the car. Now in a sadistic mood, Monoe decides to drive really fast at Madotsuki to scare her in revenge. Speeding up really quickly in a storm is a shitty idea though, so the tyres skid in the mud and the car crashes into a tunnel.

This accident causes heavy injury to Monoko: her bones jut out of her arms and shrapnel pierces holes in her stomach and face. Monoe doesn't get nearly as badly injured, but she ends up fully paralysed, her face now permanently stuck in that smug expression she had when planning to scare Madotsuki.

Speaking of Madotsuki, she fully witnessed the accident, having only been a little ahead of the car at the time.

She called an ambulance for them and the guy from earlier (she regretted not doing so earlier). She blames herself for her friends' deaths, seeing as she yelled at them about karma. This is one of the factors in her locking herself in her room.

Last Gender Volume 3 by Taki Rei

Last Gender brings a very emotional finale with its third volume. BAR California hosts a gay wedding, some previous characters also make appearances allowing us to see how they’re doing, and readers are finally clued into the backstory of the club’s owner and creation of BAR California. Again, Kodansha USA has a content warning: “references to suicide, child abuse, murder, and depictions of bigotry and violence against LGBTQIA+ people”. Some of this is graphically depicted. Taki’s art remains vivid and intense. I’ll also point out the child abuse includes sexual abuse, discussed more than directly shown on page. As in previous volumes one and two resources are also listed with the addition of Childhelp serving the US and Canada for crisis intervention or information related to child abuse. I’ll add here specifically regarding child sexual abuse the organization Stop It Now! in the US which further has a separate age 14-21 helpline What’s OK in addition to resources for adult survivors, or branches in the UK & Ireland, and Australia.

Last Gender further somewhat breaks from formula in that unlike previous instances where characters (over) speak for themselves, someone else through his past connection reveals the owner’s backstory (!). Along with the reason for the title of the series. But there’s little to reflect the ethical dilemma of the former. Tetsuya (and his relation in all this) is still inserting himself when and where he may not be wanted too. At least when it comes to the subject of people who haven’t found the right vocabulary to describe aspects of themselves, prefer unlabeled and/or, are questioning any aspects of themselves such is viewed as just as valid and worth inclusion as the identities of previous characters. (Since Tetsuya brings up ‘the “Q” that stands for “questioning”’ Q generally is read as queer, but questioning is also folded into, or another added to the acronym.) I only wish the character of the owner held the reigns more so to speak and there was better respect shown. Just as previously when Mao talks about choosing who is worthy to trust with his true self, in the real world survivors also deserve their stories to be told or not on their terms.

Rounding out the volume is a lovely message at the end from Taki Rei that talks about an overreaching theme of the series, perception and judgement. Whether one is part of a minority or not they have probably still encountered the surprise and hurt of others assessing and making assumptions based on simple things. So, while the wider world changes, work on ourselves and how we think of and treat others is also important.

All in all, Last Gender is truly a significant recent comic series both in and outside of Japan.

Now give us shark alien yandere vs mono...... Royalty vs Royalty les GOOOOO (idk the gender neutral term for a king or queen, sorry if I misgendered mono 😭)

Mono enters the cockpit to the sound of beeping overhead. Looking up, they see the montor belonging to the formally decommissioned ship ai starting back at them; its expression slightly more - guilty than usual.

"Ohhh hey, buddy! You're still alive. That's... great."

[You're supposed to be inactive, but more importantly - why wouldn't I be?]

"Ahh, can't a guy get some fresh air? Definitely wasn't woken up by some friendly shark fella from that one shark species that evovled to eat metal and hates your guts, letting him on board so they could do so and I'd be stuck with the co-pilot, but just now realizing that he might kill any thing that moves."

[You did what?]

Before Mono has time to rip it apart with their bare hands. - a shrill scream echoes through the halls of the ship.

"You're so damn cute!"

You grimace as rough skin collides with your own; your ears still ringing from the excited shriek that came from the beast currently locking you in its grip. You had not a clue where it came from. Feeling homesick, you were spending the day on a nice beach in the holo-theater. It replicated everything from the scent of the seawater to the sand betwixt your fingers. There was some splashing by the shore and the next thing you knew a humanoid shark-like creature jumped out at you; grabbing your ankles with its wedded fingers and pulling you into the water.

"Where'd that rust bucket find a cute thing like you?" He coos, flashing his jagged fangs; gums visible by his lower jaw from a tear in the flesh. "Must be lonely, yea? Considering you're out here all by yourself. If you were mine, I'd never let you outta my sight. Sounds like a dream now that I say it out loud."

The wind beats against your cheek as the door to the room opens. The shark man shields you from the force as Mono steps into the room. There's no other visual signs of their rage than the beet red glow of their singular eye. A hearty laugh comes from your captor.

"Yo! Long time no see. I came here to kill ya, but I'll let you live this time if you let me take this one off your hands. Wouldn't want a prize like them to end up dead."

[Who even are you?! Pull them down immediately and leave while I give you the choice]

"You don't remember me?" The shark's jovial persona crumbles. He points to the scar by his lips; smile a quiver away from a scowl. "Gave me this little number about twenty years back. When my folks found out I wasn't responsible for what happened to you, they booted me home and off any missions till I'm king. A whole army under my control - gone. Because of you.

[That's fascinating, but I wasn't serious when I asked. Don't touch my partner.]

"Wouldn't be yours by the time I'm done with them."

Mono raises their arm, but before they get far; the shark's body tenses . He slumps against you, sending you both into the sand. Multiple darts stick out of his back; a monitor extending from the ceiling.

"Hey, owner. Look who came to save the day and not cleaning up after their own mistakes. Good thing there was only a forty-six percent chance of me hitting the co-pilot, and judging by the pulse I used sleeping needles by accident. Thank heavens, you don't update my software."

Mono helps you up; allow the ai its freedom for a little while longer as they take you to the medical bay for a checkup. Your guest could be taken care of later - all that mattered current was your safety and Mono making it known that you were theirs and theirs alone.

Aunt Lapras Silky was just swimming around when she saw Nina and Frank with Eric trying to take him to see Bob. Wanting to at least see Eric, she swims over and gently pecks Nina a bit if she can watch Eric as she calls for Bob.

When she does, in the Tidal pool she “chickens” Eric and waits until Bob comes. Right now little Eric is just under her floof. She became quite attached though….
