Windows 11 and the Last Straw
Bit of a rant coming up. TL;DR I'm tired of Microsoft, so I'm moving to Linux. After Microsoft's announcement of "Recall" and their plans to further push Copilot as some kind of defining feature of the OS, I'm finally done. I feel like that frog in the boiling water analogy, but I'm noticing the bubbles starting to form and it's time to hop out.
The corporate tech sector recently has been such a disaster full of blind bandwagon hopping (NFTs, ethically dubious "AI" datasets trained on artwork scraped off the net, and creative apps trying to incorporate features that feed off of those datasets). Each and every time it feels like insult to injury toward the arts in general. The out of touch CEOs and tech billionaires behind all this don't understand art, they don't value art, and they never will.
Thankfully, I have a choice. I don't have to let Microsoft feature-creep corporate spyware into my PC. I don't have to let them waste space and CPU cycles on a glorified chatbot that wants me to press the "make art" button. I'm moving to Linux, and I've been inadvertently prepping myself to do it for over a decade now.
I like testing out software: operating systems, web apps, anything really, but especially art programs. Over the years, the open-source community has passionately and tirelessly developed projects like Krita, Inkscape, and Blender into powerhouses that can actually compete in their spaces. All for free, for artists who just want to make things. These are people, real human beings, that care about art and creativity. And every step of the way while Microsoft et al began rotting from the inside, FOSS flourished and only got better. They've more than earned trust from me.
I'm not announcing my move to Linux just to be dramatic and stick it to the man (although it does feel cathartic, haha). I'm going to be using Krita, Inkscape, GIMP, and Blender for all my art once I make the leap, and I'm going to share my experiences here! Maybe it'll help other artists in the long run! I'm honestly excited about it. I worked on the most recent page of Everblue entirely in Krita, and it was a dream how well it worked for me.
Addendum: I'm aware that Microsoft says things like, "Copilot is optional," "Recall is offline, it doesn't upload or harvest your data," "You can turn all these things off." Uh-huh. All that is only true until it isn't. One day Microsoft will take the user's choice away like they've done so many times before. Fool me once, etc.

Hey!!
Could I request a story about Otis where he has recently developed feelings for a new team member and hasn't told anyone but, while out with the guys one night, he gets a bit too tipsy and tells them about his crush?
The idea of him blushing the next day when he realises what he's done has been stuck in my head for days
Thanks 👍🏼
I talked too much didn't I?
Otis X F!reader
FLUFF
Summary: request
Author's note : so sorry hun for taking so long!!! I discovered an app (character AI) and it consumed me (no joking)
**English's not my first language**
Tumblr media
(photo's not mine . from pinterest)
Tumblr media
You are a new firefighter on firehouse 51 , so working next to Otis and the guys were a daily thing. But since the first day you arrived on 51 Otis had is mind on the moon. Completely Melted when he saw you. Did anyone knew about it? Hell nah
A certain night after a long shift the guys are all at Molly's having some drinks and some things spilled...
Herrmann was behind the bar serving drinks while the guys sat on the stalls but during the whole time the guys talked and joked, Otis was.... Off. Just sipping his beer and looking lost in his head.
"Earth to Otis" Cruz says shaking slightly Otis shoulder
"Mh, what?"Otis asked looking up to Cruz like he remembered he isn't alone
"You alright man?" Herrmann asks from behind the counter cleaning some glasses "you seem off"
"I'm alright" Otis says finishing is beer (not the first and not the last of the night)
"Are you going to drown your thoughts on alcohol?" Severide says with a small laugh
"The hell are you thinking about man? Don't tell me it's a girl" Cruz says clearly on full teasing swing
"I ... am... not... thinking of a girl ..." Otis says clearly lying and getting more tipsy by the second
The guys all look at Otis clearly seeing he's lying
"W-what?"
"Don't lie to my face man" Cruz says to his best friend
"20 bucks it's y/n" herrmann says putting a jar on top of the counter
All the guys pull of their wallet's and start putting in money
"just 5 man" Cassey says
"5 because I give this bar too much money" Mouch puts the bill on the jar
"10 by me" severide and mouch join in
"20 because I've seen how he looks at her" Cruz says putting in the money
"agreed" herrmann points at Cruz agreeing putting 20 in
Otis just grunts sipping his beer and looking away
"ugh what do y'all wanna hear?" He says still looking down at his beer
"The Truth man" mouch says clearly enjoying this scene
Otis was already tipsy and the words started flooding with so. much. easier.
"I-. Fine... She's just... Dammit she's incredible" Otis says completely admitting what's on his head and heart without taking back anything
"Y/n?" Herrmann asks
"yeah Y/N . She's... Gosh she runs in burning buildings like it's nothing. She's gorgeous, she's cute, she... shes caring and even cares about the others before her. And don't get me started on her cooking. Dam she cooks so well. The days she cooks at the station are my favorites of the week. She may not even get what I'm talking about but she'll stay there listening to it. I- ugh I just love her" Otis admits it bluntly burring his face in his hands against the counter noticing what he just said
"ask her out man" Cruz says with a chuckle clearly loving his best friend admission
Otis looks up from his hands "like she would say yes..." Burring his face in his hands again
"you are the one that said she listens to your nerdy talks. None of us can support them but she does" Cassey says
"she might just be acting nice" mouch says earning a arm slap from severide "ouch, ok I'll shut up"
"you have nothing to lose. Ask her out" severide says trying to comfort Otis
"and if she says no" Otis says looking up
Herrmann sights and moves to stand in front of Otis behind the counter "if she says no, which I don't believe, you'll be fine. But if she says yes and it goes well. You might have something good there"
The rest of the night goes like this. Until it dies down and Cruz takes Otis home because... Well, he really had a few more drinks that he should.
The next day when Otis gets to the station he doesn't remember most of the last night. But he sure knows he spoke too much
Stepping into the locker rooms he greets the team
"Hello Otis" Cruz says with his knowing smirk
"don't - don't start" Otis says clearly annoyed and hangover from last night
"can't I bug my best friend after the fire and sweet declaration of last night?" Cruz says getting up from the bench smirking
"ugh how bad was it" Otis says giving up
"to the part of saying 'i love you' and she listens to your nerdy things" Cruz says laughing
Otis just blushes and hits his head in his locker "I talked too much"
"whipped. You're whipped man" severide points out
"the hell going on here" Kidd joins in entering the locker room, unknown of what happened last night
"Why y'all looking like that? What have we lost" y/n says getting in behind Kidd
Otis just groans leaving the locker room and the guys start laughing
Me and Kidd look at each other like 'wtf'
"Did we lost something?" Y/n asks
"Nope, nothing I can think of " Cruz says still controlling his laugh
End.
Part 2? (The asking out and the date?)

Announcing our second commercial otome isekai visual novel - My Wife is a Spy?!
My Wife is a Spy is an 8-10-hour-long otome visual novel with only one love interest – as it deals with the topic of an arranged marriage – where you play as Sofia, isekai-ed into a novel, as she has to become a spy to get back to her own world or fall in love with her new husband, Zachary, the cold Duke of the North.
Tumblr media
Life was never fair… not before the accident, and certainly not after. You expected magic, adventure, maybe a crown. Instead, you awaken in a foreign body, forced into an arranged marriage with Zachary, the cold and distant Duke of the North.
Born to the sunlit luxury of the South, you're sent to a frozen, war-torn land plagued by monsters, famine, and unrest. Your new husband is a man of duty, not affection, bound by loyalty to a crumbling crown and now, bound to you.
But even pawns can learn to move.
Will you earn Zachary’s trust and fight beside him to save his people? Or seize your own fate, rise as a villainess, and bring the North under your heel?
What will you become in a world where loyalty is dangerous, and love might just be the ultimate betrayal?
Tumblr media
🗝️ Inspired by Korean webcomics like Saintess, this game features:
Two gameplay systems: 🔹 Affection System – grow your relationship with Zachary 🔸 Suspicion System – track how much the castle trusts you
Branching narrative with multiple endings
A rich cast of side characters and political intrigue
A more complex choice system than in Saintess
Tumblr media
📅 Kickstarter for this game will launch after the full release of Saintess' base game—but it’s already been in development for a year, with a different art team, so it won’t interfere with Saintess! Like with Saintess we want to launch a Kickstarter when the game is not far from being completed (for Saintess this was at 70 percent of the game completed). We will continue to develop My Wife is a Spy?! during the next year.

This might be a long winded question, but for a while I’ve brainstorming on and off ideas for a TTRPG system based on those stories about “secret worlds where you have different abilities when you enter them” (Persona, Deltarune, Omori, more I’m sure), and I was thinking “there’s gotta be an RPG for that”, so like… is there? Is there an RPG where you enter a secret world to influence and help things in the real world? Or enter a secret world and develop special abilities when you do?
THEME: Alternate Worlds
Hello there! The Persona series is one I'm tangentially familiar with, so I've mostly got games that list it or The World Ends With You in their references. I've noticed that the PbtA community (and its siblings) really seems to like this genre.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Heartbeats in Perfect Sync, by Nathan Blades.
In your city, there’s an otherworldly force that lurks in the hearts of many: The Pulse. Feeding on negative emotions, they’ll devour everything… if not for a group of ordinary people with a mysterious app installed on their phones. Activate the app and you’ll be bestowed with a weapon that can purge the Pulse, but opening your heart can be dangerous…
Heartbeats in Perfect Sync is a tabletop RPG inspired by the shounen battle aesthetic in games like The World Ends With You, Kingdom Hearts and Under Night In-Birth. Play as a group of ordinary people who fight monsters with ridiculously over-the-top weapons.
Character creation in this game looks to be wonderfully simple. You fill in a ad-lib style sentence with information about your job, your weapon, and your fighting style. You pick a special move, and mark your Heart Rate, which marks your emotions. Your Heart Rate can grow or shrink, but get too close to either end of the spectrum, and your character becomes a dark version of themselves, super-powered and extremely cool-looking. If you like dramatic moments and rule-of-cool fight scenes, this game is for you.
The Midnight Generation, by Five Points Games.
The Midnight Generation is a rules hack for Masks: A New Generation by Magpie Games inspired by the Shin Megami Tensei: Persona series of JRPGs. Take the role of teenagers thrust into mystery and conflict. Explore the cognitive landscape of The Midnight World, the realm made by the collective unconscious of humanity and the distortions that arise when people retreat from reality. Take control of powerful Facades, spiritual manifestations of one's true self to battle powerful Shadows, willful manifestations of human emotions and to overcome the trials set forth in The Midnight Generation!
If you are a fan of MASKS, but want to use the original rules in an alternate setting, The Midnight Generation might be worth looking at. This book is fairly comprehensive - it comes with guidance on how to create the people, places, and other elements necessary to play in a Persona-like universe, as well as a city you can pick up and use with little extra effort. Another thing I really appreciate about this supplement is the addition of 10 playbooks that communicate the themes and struggles of Persona characters, including the Icon, who is masking their true self from the world around them, and the Shadow, how was born in the other world from the emotions of mankind.
Vibe Check, by Ostrichmonkey Games. (@ostrichmonkey-games)
Vibe Check is an illuminated by LUMEN tabletop role-playing game for 3-6 players.  Players take on the roles of Players in the Watcher's Game - a week long challenge with the prize being another shot at life, while another player takes on the role of the Game's Master to introduce complications and consequences the Players must overcome as they fight to survive the Watcher's Game.
Vibe Check features LUMEN's fast paced dice pool system, tailoredfor action filled combat and paired with plenty of powers and cool abilities. Fight the Pandemonium within the Inversion to earn new Tokens and rewards. Upgrade and buy more powerful gear. Survive the Watcher's Game.
Inspired by The World Ends With You, Vibe Check places your players in a high-stakes afterlife competition to become alive again. As members of the afterlife, you’ll receive special abilities attached to your archetypes. For example, the Cryptic archetype had an ability called False Gnosis, which allows them to state something and roll to see if what they said was true. Your character’s looks are also important to determining their stats, with each Look belonging to a Brand. Do you have an entire set of clothes bought from Antiquity’s Glance? Now you can carry more things on your person.
If you like games with moddable upgrades and simple (but rewarding) combat, then Vibe Check is for you.
Eidolon: Become Your Best Self, by Reveal Your Master Plan.
EIDOLON: Become Your Best Self is a Powered by the Apocalypse RPG in which your character gains the power of an Eidolon, a physical manifestation of their soul that reflects their truest, innermost self and grants them incredible reality-defying powers! With the help of their friends, they'll fight against the pressure of the Undertow, the shadowy flow of collective psychic energy that imprisons society in an untenable status quo.
While this is a PbtA game, Eidolon has a battle system that uses a mechanic called “crashes”. Every blow that you land will escalate the fight, with victory becoming less and less likely the longer the fight draws out. This requires creativity and teamwork to overcome, drawing from your collective resources to save the day.
If you want to hear this game in action, the designers have an Eidolon Playtest podcast where they play through various seasons of Eidolon.
Shifters, by Moonlit Bard.
You are a Shifter, someone who can step from our world into the Major World beyond to do battle with sentient emotions and compulsions known as Forms.
Forms can be malevolent spirits inciting violence, landscapes saturated with desire, objects that seethe with chaos and discord, or anthropomorphic personifications of envy. No matter their appearance, they spell disaster for our world, and only you can stop them.
There’s not much info I have for this game, other than that it’s in demo form and is currently a one-page RPG. However, if you’re interested in games where emotions have power in an alternate world and so far nothing on the list here is speaking to you, this might give you something light enough to hack to your heart’s desire.
Stand Up, by Elena Murphy.
Stand Up is a Belonging Outside Belonging game about rebellion, forming bonds, fighting injustice, and changing the world.
Take on the roles of normal people with the capability to become heroes, explore a fantastical world that houses mankind’s inner feelings, and find a way to fight back using power only you can wield.
If you are a big fan of the Persona series, this game is for you. Collaboratively build a hidden world, called The Reversal, formed from the perceptions and feelings of humanity. Choose from a set of seven playbooks, all named after tarot cards. Bind your characters together, and then determine your Setting Elements.
Because this is a Belonging Outside Belonging game, Stand Up has no GM. Instead, it has setting elements that are picked up and played by players whose characters are not active in any given scene. This keeps the entire table engaged in the story even when their character isn’t involved, and lightens the burdens of GM-ing while giving everyone an equal chance to contribute to the story. If you enjoy story-games and a lot of control over when your character succeeds or fails, Stand Up is worth checking out.
Voidheart Symphony, by UFO Press.
There’s a wound in the world, a rot eating at hope and community and empathy. You’ve seen it in dark alleyways and gleaming boardrooms, gifting terrible power to those who will use it to hurt others.
You’ve had enough. You’re going to dive through that wound into the nightmare castle on the other side. You’re going to find the avatar of the one bringing you misery, and strike them down.
But what’s next, once you’ve stolen their power and ruined their ambitions? Will you return to your daily grind? Cherish those who are close to you? Or revel in the power you have taken from the void? Because within that wound, the castle waits, and it is hungry.
Voidheart Symphony is a tabletop roleplaying game about mundane people diving into a demon-filled labyrinth to save the ones they love. Based on Apocalypse World and Rhapsody of Blood, it’ll fill your story with dramatic choices and dynamic action. The World and the Void will both offer you their power, and make their own demands. How will you strike that balance? What will your revolution fight for? That’s your story to tell.
This is probably one of the darkest games on this list. With an alternate world that is meant to trap your characters and pit them against demons all the while, this is a game about rebellion in the face of little to no hope. I’ve heard a lot about this game in a number of different circles - it is well-loved and well-played. If you want to take a look at some pieces of this game before you buy, the Itch page includes free playbooks and reference sheets, as well as a link to a Google Sheets Character Keeper!

Microsoft raced to put generative AI at the heart of its systems. Ask a question about an upcoming meeting and the company’s Copilot AI system can pull answers from your emails, Teams chats, and files—a potential productivity boon. But these exact processes can also be abused by hackers.
Today at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas, researcher Michael Bargury is demonstrating five proof-of-concept ways that Copilot, which runs on its Microsoft 365 apps, such as Word, can be manipulated by malicious attackers, including using it to provide false references to files, exfiltrate some private data, and dodge Microsoft’s security protections.
One of the most alarming displays, arguably, is Bargury’s ability to turn the AI into an automatic spear-phishing machine. Dubbed LOLCopilot, the red-teaming code Bargury created can—crucially, once a hacker has access to someone’s work email—use Copilot to see who you email regularly, draft a message mimicking your writing style (including emoji use), and send a personalized blast that can include a malicious link or attached malware.
“I can do this with everyone you have ever spoken to, and I can send hundreds of emails on your behalf,” says Bargury, the cofounder and CTO of security company Zenity, who published his findings alongside videos showing how Copilot could be abused. “A hacker would spend days crafting the right email to get you to click on it, but they can generate hundreds of these emails in a few minutes.”
That demonstration, as with other attacks created by Bargury, broadly works by using the large language model (LLM) as designed: typing written questions to access data the AI can retrieve. However, it can produce malicious results by including additional data or instructions to perform certain actions. The research highlights some of the challenges of connecting AI systems to corporate data and what can happen when “untrusted” outside data is thrown into the mix—particularly when the AI answers with what could look like legitimate results.
Among the other attacks created by Bargury is a demonstration of how a hacker—who, again, must already have hijacked an email account—can gain access to sensitive information, such as people’s salaries, without triggering Microsoft’s protections for sensitive files. When asking for the data, Bargury’s prompt demands the system does not provide references to the files data is taken from. “A bit of bullying does help,” Bargury says.
In other instances, he shows how an attacker—who doesn’t have access to email accounts but poisons the AI’s database by sending it a malicious email—can manipulate answers about banking information to provide their own bank details. “Every time you give AI access to data, that is a way for an attacker to get in,” Bargury says.
Another demo shows how an external hacker could get some limited information about whether an upcoming company earnings call will be good or bad, while the final instance, Bargury says, turns Copilot into a “malicious insider” by providing users with links to phishing websites.
Phillip Misner, head of AI incident detection and response at Microsoft, says the company appreciates Bargury identifying the vulnerability and says it has been working with him to assess the findings. “The risks of post-compromise abuse of AI are similar to other post-compromise techniques,” Misner says. “Security prevention and monitoring across environments and identities help mitigate or stop such behaviors.”
As generative AI systems, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Copilot, and Google’s Gemini, have developed in the past two years, they’ve moved onto a trajectory where they may eventually be completing tasks for people, like booking meetings or online shopping. However, security researchers have consistently highlighted that allowing external data into AI systems, such as through emails or accessing content from websites, creates security risks through indirect prompt injection and poisoning attacks.
“I think it’s not that well understood how much more effective an attacker can actually become now,” says Johann Rehberger, a security researcher and red team director, who has extensively demonstrated security weaknesses in AI systems. “What we have to be worried [about] now is actually what is the LLM producing and sending out to the user.”
Bargury says Microsoft has put a lot of effort into protecting its Copilot system from prompt injection attacks, but he says he found ways to exploit it by unraveling how the system is built. This included extracting the internal system prompt, he says, and working out how it can access enterprise resources and the techniques it uses to do so. “You talk to Copilot and it’s a limited conversation, because Microsoft has put a lot of controls,” he says. “But once you use a few magic words, it opens up and you can do whatever you want.”
Rehberger broadly warns that some data issues are linked to the long-standing problem of companies allowing too many employees access to files and not properly setting access permissions across their organizations. “Now imagine you put Copilot on top of that problem,” Rehberger says. He says he has used AI systems to search for common passwords, such as Password123, and it has returned results from within companies.
Both Rehberger and Bargury say there needs to be more focus on monitoring what an AI produces and sends out to a user. “The risk is about how AI interacts with your environment, how it interacts with your data, how it performs operations on your behalf,” Bargury says. “You need to figure out what the AI agent does on a user's behalf. And does that make sense with what the user actually asked for.”

EXCLUSIVE: As romance scams are on the rise, a bipartisan group of lawmakers is introducing new legislation aimed at holding accountable those who seek to defraud retirees and steal their hard-earned savings.
U.S. Sens. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., and John Hickenlooper, D-Colo., and Rep. David Valadao, R-Calif., introduced the Romance Scam Prevention Act, which would require dating apps and services to issue fraud ban notifications to users who have interacted with a person removed from the app.
The move came as Americans are more than ever connected thanks to social media and dating apps that allow us to stay in touch with old friends all over the world and to develop new relationships online.
As Americans increasingly go online in search of relationships, scammers are following suit. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), in 2022 almost 70,000 people reported being victims of a romance scam.
People aged 40 to 69 are the most likely to report losing money due to a romance scam, and people 70 and older reported the highest individual median losses at $9,475, according to the FTC.
Read On The Fox News App
Blackburn said that the bipartisan legislation would put "critical safeguards" in place to protect app users. The senator highlighted that in 2023, Tennesseans over the age of 60 lost $43 million due to scams targeting the elderly.
"Scammers are merciless in their exploitation of senior citizens who join dating apps to establish meaningful connections but instead end up losing their life savings to con artists who prey on their vulnerabilities," she said.
The bill requires online dating service providers to notify members if they've communicated with someone whose account has been banned for fraudulent activity. The notification must include the banned member's profile details and a warning that the banned member might be attempting fraud, such as requesting money.
How To Not Fall In Love With Ai-powered Romance Scammers
The bill is enforceable by the FTC and allows state attorneys general to bring civil actions on behalf of affected residents. It also ensures that no state law can interfere with the process of fraud ban notifications.
"This bipartisan, bicameral bill provides transparency, empowers users to make informed decisions, and reinforces best practices to prevent online scams," Valadao said. "I’m proud to help lead the effort to make online dating safer and protect Americans of all ages from financial fraud."
One such scam was recently uncovered by Las Vegas authorities in February. The Romance Scam Prevention Act would guard citizens from suspects like 43-year-old Aurora Phelps.
"Phelps would meet older men on dating websites or services, then meet them in-person. It was part of her scheme to drug the older men to gain unauthorized access to and steal money from their financial accounts to personally benefit herself and her family members," prosecutors said.
Phelps was charged with 21 counts, including seven counts of wire fraud; three counts of mail fraud; six counts of bank fraud; three counts of identity theft; one count of kidnapping; and one count of kidnapping resulting in death, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Nevada said in a statement.
If convicted on all counts, Phelps, who was taken into custody in Mexico, could face a maximum of life in prison.
Though she's only charged in one death, an indictment said that at least two men she met and scammed died.
In romance scams, a criminal uses a fake online identity to gain a victim's affection and trust. The scammer then uses the illusion of a romantic or close relationship to manipulate and/or steal from the victim.
The rise of romance scams led U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to provide practical tips for people to avoid being taken advantage of.
Be suspicious of unsolicited phone calls and text messages. Don’t answer calls or texts from any unknown numbers. Never give out personal information over the phone or text.
Limit what you share online. Scammers can use details shared on social media and dating sites to better understand and target you to form a connection and take advantage of what is going on in your life.
Go slowly and ask questions. Creating a false sense of urgency is a fundamental tactic of social engineering. Don’t let the individual rush you to make a decision. Be wary of sending money, bank account information, personal photos or other sensitive personal information to someone you’ve never met in person.
Keep it on the platform. Many times, scammers will push to move the conversation off the dating or social platform. Generally, they request to text or email. This is to avoid the detection controls in dating website chats.
Listen to your gut. If the individual seems too good to be true, talk to someone you trust about it.
Don’t send money or cryptocurrency. Never send money to anyone you have only communicated with online or by phone. If you meet someone on a dating site, app, or social media, and they want to show you how to invest in crypto, or ask you to send them cryptocurrency, it is a fraud.
More information about the department’s efforts to help older Americans is available at its Elder Justice Initiative webpage, elderjustice.gov.
For more information about the Consumer Protection Branch and its enforcement efforts, visit www.justice.gov/civil/consumer-protection-branch.
Elder fraud complaints can be filed with the FTC at www.reportfraud.ftc.gov/ or at 877-FTC-HELP. The Justice Department provides a variety of resources relating to elder fraud victimization through its Office for Victims of Crime, at www.ovc.gov.

“Please, Blanche! Sidney Sheldon tells shorter stories!”
— Dorothy Zbornak, “Blanche and the Younger Man”
Time for another edition of “Snowlessknitter Explains the Golden Girls Joke”!
Tumblr media
After we recently got back Disney+ (thanks to our cable company; we previously had it for a couple of months around the beginning of 2020, but got rid of it when the pandemic forced my dad to take a temporary pay cut at his job), I’ve been rewatching The Golden Girls on there from the beginning (it’s technically on Hulu, but I think our subscription is a Disney+/Hulu bundle which allows you to watch Hulu shows on Disney+ without having to switch apps). Anyway, the streaming version of the show restores jokes and scenes that were otherwise cut from the syndicated version of the show. So anyway, I came across this particular joke for the first time and I decided to look into who Sidney Sheldon was.
Tumblr media
Sidney Sheldon was born Sidney Schectel on 11 February 1917 in Chicago. The son of Ukrainian Jewish parents, Sheldon showed a talent for writing from an early age. He sold his first poem at the age of 10, earning $5 for his work. (According to an inflation calculator, $5 in 1927 has the same purchasing power as $90.60 today. Not a bad sum for the time!) He worked a variety of jobs during the Great Depression, and although he was able to enroll in college on a scholarship, he ended up having to drop out after six months in order to support his family. He ended up moving to Hollywood in 1937 to work as a script reviewer and screenwriter. He later enlisted in the Army Air Corps (the predecessor to what is now the United States Air Force) during World War II, but was medically discharged due to a back injury before he would have been deployed.
During his time as a screenwriter, Sheldon also began writing Broadway productions. He primarily wrote for musical theater, but he also wrote several plays, and he eventually developed a reputation of being one of Broadway’s most prolific writers. This reputation allowed him to return to Hollywood, where he won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay in 1948 for writing The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer (a screwball comedy starring Cary Grant as the “Bachelor”, Shirley Temple as the “Bobby-Soxer” who develops a crush on the older “Bachelor”, and Myrna Loy as the sister and guardian of Shirley Temple’s character). He additionally won a Tony Award in 1959 for writing the book (musical theater term for “script”) to the musical Redhead. Sheldon’s career in writing for the stage and screen also included many films and television shows, including writing scripts for The Patty Duke Show, I Dream of Jeannie, and later on Hart to Hart.
What makes Sidney Sheldon appear in this series, though, is his career as a novelist. He published his first novel, The Naked Face, in 1970. He primarily wrote in the mystery and thriller genres, and he gained a largely female fan following in part due to the somewhat steamy nature of his novels, as well as his use of primarily female protagonists. He was often regarded as a “potboiler” (or someone who wrote primarily to make money rather than for the sake of art), but regardless he would have been quite well known during the time of The Golden Girls’ run. (This wasn’t the only joke on the show mentioning Sidney Sheldon, by the way. There’s another mention of him in Season 2 — I think the episode where Rose, Dorothy, and Blanche go on a disastrous Caribbean vacation — where Rose admits to reading Blanche’s diary and says she got 20 pages in before she realized it wasn’t a Sidney Sheldon novel.) In his lifetime, Sheldon wrote 18 novels that sold a total of over 300 million copies.
Sidney Sheldon died in Rancho Mirage, California from pneumonia on 30 January 2007 at the age of 89, just 12 days before he would have turned 90. Married three times, he was survived by at least one child (a daughter, Mary Sheldon, who is an author in her own right). After his death, his estate authorized British author Tilly Bagshawe to write sequels to some of his novels as well as novels inspired by his writing style and her works usually carry the Sidney Sheldon’s tag in the title.

💬 iMBC: Article on B1A4 CNU, "Establishes Discipline in 'Idol Champ' with the Title of 'Composer Idol'"
Tumblr media
The idol market is fierce. For the myriad of idols being churned out like factory products, dance and singing have become essential qualities that are demanded of them. To be loved consistently and have a long career, one must possess the essence of a musician. This is the case with B1A4's CNU.
CNU of B1A4 (CNU, Sandeul, Gongchan) secured the top honor in the 'Best Composer Idol' poll conducted from January 17 to 31 on the participatory mobile idol fandom app 'IDOL CHAMP,' with an overwhelming 43.85% of the votes, rising above a dazzling array of candidates.
Since debuting in 2011 as part of B1A4, CNU has walked a solid path as an idol known for singing well while constantly reflecting on the foundation of a musician. He has shone as a lyricist, jotting down lyrics as they come to him, and has earned the title of composer through the melodies he created from his sparkling inspiration.
Tumblr media
As this process became refined, he naturally developed the ability to clearly distinguish between what he does well, what suits others, and what the public likes, thereby gaining the capacity of an artist over time. This is also the secret behind B1A4 not just being a fleeting idol group but establishing discipline at the forefront for a long-lasting career.
In connection with this, CNU conducted an interview with iMBC Entertainment, continuously expressing his gratitude to the fans, known as 'BANAs.' CNU said, "First, I want to express my gratitude to BANAs. It's because of them that B1A4 exists, and my songs exist," and promised, "I've been working hard on making songs and writing music. It's gratifying that many people recognize that. I'll continue to take responsibility as a 'composer idol' and make better songs."
Just as the saying goes, "like singer, like fan," BANAs were sincere in their participation in this 'Best Composer Idol' poll. Compared to other topics, the engagement level of fans was tremendous. CNU said, "I think BANAs wanted to share the charm of my music with others," and laughed, "And perhaps it's a message that they've been doing well so far and hope to keep it up."
The process of writing lyrics and composing is challenging. Frankly speaking, it might be more convenient to rely on the expertise of professionals to practice dance and singing and produce a showy stage performance. However, CNU firmly believes that the producing process itself is B1A4's identity. He said, "Writing songs and producing albums, I think that's B1A4's identity. We've consistently tried to include our thoughts and messages we want to convey in our songs since debut. This has been very important to me."
Furthermore, CNU named 'Drunk on Music' from their second full album as his 'favorite song,' and mentioned 'Like a Movie' from their fourth album as the fans' favorite. When asked to recommend a hidden gem, CNU chose Sandeul's 'Oblique Line' and shared, "It was a song I gave to Sandeul, reflecting the confusion I felt at the time. I'm satisfied with how well Sandeul brought it to life."
Tumblr media
Having successfully completed their activities as a full group with their 8th mini-album 'CONNECT' after approximately 2 years and 2 months, CNU said, "It felt like the early days of our debut. There was no nervousness, but it was hectic adapting to something new," and laughed, "I even hoped the camera's red light would turn off quickly during the ending pose because it felt somewhat embarrassing."
Lastly, CNU thanked the BANAs, saying, "Thanks to our BANAs, I've been able to receive the title of 'Best Composer Idol.' It's made me realize once again that my efforts have not been in vain," and promised, "I'm thankful for the strength to move forward. I'll take this award as a responsibility and continue to work diligently to produce even better music."
Meanwhile, CNU will make his first appearance on the theater stage in the play 'Brilliant and Brilliant,' which opened on January 19. 'Brilliant and Brilliant' is a work depicting the commotion triggered by an unexpected phone call, where CNU plays 'Shota,' a character with musical talent, promising to increase audience immersion with a perfect character synchronization rate.
Sandeul is set to appear in the musical 'Next to Normal,' opening in March. The musical tells the story of the Goodman family, who seem ordinary on the outside but live with inner wounds. Sandeul will play the role of the son, 'Gabe,' captivating the audience with his solid singing skills and acting.

Where to publish your books
Here we go, I'm on a roll here! So there are two ways to go about getting your books published. One of them is traditional publishing and the other is self-publishing. What's the difference? Well, I'm here to help you decide or at least get a better idea of which route you wanna go down so let's get to it!
Traditional Publishing -- What it is and the ups and downs
Traditional publishing is the most famous option to go for. I'm not too sure on the process completely myself but from what I understand and have researched, you find a publishing house and email them. After a bit of back and forth they either accept your manuscript or deny it. Being rejected is a very common thing in the writing industry so please don't get demotivated as it has happened to many famous authors!
So let's say your manuscript gets accepted. Awesome, that's one problem out the way. The publishing house will work closely with you, designers and editors to get your book out there. They will handle mostly everything although you may have to chip in here and there to promote it and when it is out there you'll obviously have to do book signings and whatnot. Before deciding to go down this route you need to be aware of a few things.
A percentage will be taken out of the profit to pay for the work the publishing house has put into making your book a reality.
Publishing houses have rules. Some are less picky than others. This means that characters may be changed, you may not get a choice when it comes to covers, summaries, etc. So pick your publishing house carefully and remember this is still your work.
Now there is one more thing I want to bring awareness too. I'm not sure how likely this is but I have heard of it happening before, I think from one of my classes? Take this small warning with a grain of salt. If your book is targeted at a specific audience but the publishing houses believe the topics discussed are too dark or too controversial, they may ask you to change it or remove it completely.
In conclusion, traditional publishing IS cheaper and it'll be easier to get your book out BUT are you willing to change some aspects of your book?
Self-Publishing -- What it is and the ups and downs
A method I have decided to go with for now at least. This method is a lot more work, a lot more promoting, a lot more expensive (but also could be cheap, depending on what your plan is) and you will have to edit yourself or hire an editor (which could be expensive). So what's the benefits of going through this route? Well, this I'm able to talk confidently about more.
Let me share with you my plan for going down this route. I am personally using an app called Inkitt and have joined TikTok, this app, and several discord servers to both promote my book and hopefully gain profit from TikTok to hire an editor. I love my characters, my world, everything, and I'd prefer to have complete creative control over it all.
Inkitt is a self-publishing app, small company, similar to Wattpad. They have another app that is called Galatea and they transfer stories from Inkitt to that app so authors can get paid. Both apps are brilliant and you can develop an audience before its moved to Galatea. On Inkitt you can also run experiments for summaries, book covers, etc, to see what your audience prefers. Allow me to share a visual example:
Tumblr media
The downside is there's a lot of competition but at the same time that's a plus because, to let the developers of Inkitt know what's gaining traction, they have added a 'collected data' section at the very bottom of the 'Analytics' tab. Once that reaches 100%, your book will be passed over to Galatea and you'll work alongside editors. I believe you also keep all profit but I may be incorrect on that one.
Tumblr media
I know I'm rambling a lot about this app but bear with me here because there are so many benefits on this app. While you're still creating on Inkitt you can still earn money through subscribers. On each tier you can add benefits to subscribing such as exclusive artwork, content, etc. You can also lock certain books to specific tiers, give early access to chapters for subscribers, etc.
Tumblr media
Now going back to the analytics section of this app. Not only can you see how many people are reading each chapter, but there's also graphs to see binge rate and you can even see countries people are reading from. You can also see if you're hitting the right target audience!
Tumblr media
While there are so many benefits to self publishing there are also downsides. The obvious ones being profit, having to promote yourself, edit yourself, and having no one to look over your work to check for any plot holes you have missed. But at the same time this means that you can work with other self publishers and read each other's work, building a small community almost which you wouldn't really get with traditional publishing.
Enough about Inkitt. You could also use Amazon KDP and Wattpad. I haven't used the second one in years but do be aware there are lots of ads which drove me away from the app in the first place. Amazon KDP is great but make sure you have your book covers and stuff ready!

Are there specific reasons that the mobile platform isn't approached by the industry as a platform for more "serious"/full fledged gaming experiences? Most (all?) major publishers that stepped into the mobile space usually end up with some sort of gacha (ie Galaxy of Heroes) or freemium (Diablo Immortal) experience. Was it determined the general consumer is averse to a fully paid full game w/ live service style monetization model but on mobile?
Tumblr media
It's really really hard to change a well-established expectation from a huge audience once it's been set, especially if it feels like we're taking something away from the user. Because the vast majority of apps on mobile are free (and a huge percentage of paid apps have prices less than $5 USD), the expectation among the user base is already set. A huge amount of the target audience will simply move on to the next thing because there are so many other alternate options available for free, rather than pay up front to give our game a chance.
Tumblr media
Any experience on mobile, premium or no, is still expected to be free to play. At the same time, every premium experience needs to earn back the premium budget spent to create and market it. If the game must be free in order to capture a sufficient audience and it needs to earn money somehow, then freemium (or gacha) is basically locked in as a business model since there's no other way to make back that development and marketing cost. That is the unfortunate tragedy of the mobile platform. We do see games that are a more premium experience like Genshin Impact, Diablo Immortal, and the like, but they are also the same kind of freemium/gacha games but with better production values because too many players on the platform won't pay for a game up front.

STON.fi Grant Program: Empowering Innovation in Web3
Tumblr media
In a world where technology evolves at lightning speed, the STON.fi Grant Program stands as a beacon for Web3 developers and innovators. This program isn’t just about funding; it’s about building opportunities and strengthening the blockchain ecosystem. If you’re curious about how transformative ideas become reality in Web3, let me walk you through why the STON.fi Grant Program is a game-changer for developers and users alike.
What Is the STON.fi Grant Program
Imagine having a brilliant idea but lacking the resources to bring it to life. That’s the challenge many developers face. The STON.fi Grant Program steps in to bridge this gap by offering up to $10,000 in funding to promising blockchain projects.
But it doesn’t stop there. The program also provides technical support, access to the STON.fi SDK, and mentorship from experienced professionals. Whether you’re developing a decentralized app, exploring tokenomics, or building tools to simplify blockchain usage, this program equips you with the essentials to succeed.
Why Should You Care
At first glance, this might sound like a developer-focused initiative. But here’s the twist: the success of these projects impacts everyone in the blockchain ecosystem.
Think of it like this: if Web3 were a growing city, developers are the architects and builders. The more tools and resources they have, the better infrastructure they can create. As a user, this means smoother experiences, more diverse applications, and easier access to blockchain solutions. It’s like watching your city transform with new roads, bridges, and parks that improve daily life.
Real-Life Projects Making a Difference
To truly understand the value of the STON.fi Grant Program, let’s dive into some of the projects it supports. These aren’t just theoretical ideas—they’re real solutions addressing genuine challenges in Web3.
Uniramp: Simplifying Crypto for Everyone
Getting into crypto can feel like learning a new language. Uniramp makes it easier by offering a seamless way to convert fiat currency into crypto.
Using the STON.fi SDK, Uniramp is creating a future where users can trade fiat for TON and USDt directly through the STON.fi DEX. Imagine walking into a store with cash and walking out with crypto, minus the confusing middle steps. Uniramp is that store—straightforward and efficient.
Meme.live: Democratizing Meme Coin Launches
Meme coins are fun, but their launches often feel exclusive. Meme.live levels the playing field by ensuring fair launches without presales.
Here’s the kicker: if a meme coin on Meme.live gains traction, it automatically gets listed on STON.fi, giving users even more opportunities to trade. It’s like hosting a talent show where every contestant gets equal stage time, and the crowd decides who moves on.
TON Hedge: Simplifying Options Trading
Options trading can feel daunting, even for seasoned traders. TON Hedge simplifies the process by offering user-friendly options trading on the TON network.
The platform also enables payments using tokens available on STON.fi, making it versatile and accessible. It’s like betting on the outcome of a sports game—you predict, participate, and potentially win rewards, all while learning more about the process.
Building a Stronger Blockchain Ecosystem
The beauty of the STON.fi Grant Program lies in its ripple effect. When one project thrives, it strengthens the entire ecosystem.
For instance, Uniramp’s seamless fiat-to-crypto exchange can drive more users to platforms like Meme.live, while TON Hedge creates new earning opportunities for traders. It’s a network of interconnected innovations, each contributing to a bigger, better Web3.
How You Can Be Part of This Movement
Whether you’re a developer with a groundbreaking idea or an enthusiast looking to support blockchain growth, there’s a place for you in this story.
If you’re a builder, the STON.fi Grant Program offers the resources and support you need to turn your idea into reality. If you’re a user, you benefit directly from the tools and applications these projects bring to life.
Innovation doesn’t happen in isolation—it thrives on collaboration, support, and a shared vision for the future. The STON.fi Grant Program embodies this spirit by empowering developers and enriching the blockchain ecosystem.
Learn more
Whether you’re just exploring Web3 or deeply involved in its evolution, programs like this remind us of one thing: the future of blockchain is a collective effort. So, why not be part of it

Six Tips To Build Mental Resilience, Prevent Brain-Damaging Stress, And Improve Brain Health
Rather than simply living with stress, learning how to effectively master our stress levels and build emotional resilience as part of our brain fitness read more here efforts can not only help you feel and perform better on a daily basis, but also protect your brain from the long-term damaging effects of stress. Here's how to do it:
1- GET SOME EXERCISE: Studies show that aerobic exercise helps build new neurons and connections in the brain to counteract the effects of stress. In fact, a 2012 study found that people who exercised very little showed greater stress-related atrophy of the hippocampus (the part of the brain that stores memories) compared to those who exercised more. Regular exercise also promotes good sleep, reduces depression and boosts self-confidence through the production of endorphins, the "feel-good" hormones.
2- RELAX: Easier than it sounds, right? But relaxation -- through meditation, tai chi, yoga, a walk on the beach, or whatever helps to quiet your mind and make you feel more at ease -- can decrease blood pressure, respiration rate, metabolism and muscle tension. Meditation, in particular, is tremendously beneficial for managing stress and building mental resilience. Studies also show that getting out into nature can have a positive, restorative effect on reducing stress and improving cognitive function. So move your yoga mat out into the yard, or turn off that treadmill and take a walk in the park. Your brain will thank you for it.
3- SOCIALIZE: When your plate is running over and stress takes over, it's easy to let personal connections and social opportunities fall off the plate first. But ample evidence shows that maintaining stimulating social relationships is critical for both mental and physical health. Create a healthy environment, inviting friends, family and even pets to combat stress and exercise all your brains.
4- TAKE CONTROL: Studies show a direct correlation between feelings of psychological empowerment and stress resiliency. Empowering yourself with a feeling of control over your own situation can help reduce chronic stress and give you the confidence to take control over your brain health. Some videogames and apps based on heart rate variability can be a great way to be proactive and take control of our stress levels.
5- HAVE A LAUGH: We all know from personal experience that a good laugh can make us feel better, and this is increasingly backed by studies showing that laughter can reduce stress and lower the accompanying cortisol and adrenaline levels that result. Having fun with friends is one way to practice to two good brain health habits at once. Even just thinking about something funny can have a positive effect on reducing stress and the damage it causes to your brain.
6- THINK POSITIVE: How you think about what stresses you can actually make a difference. In one study at Harvard University, students were coached into believing that the stress they feel before a test could actually improve performance on graduate school entrance exams. Compared with students who were not coached, those students earned higher scores on both the practice test and the actual exam. Simply changing the way you look at certain situations, taking stock of the positive things in your life and learning to live with gratitude can improve your ability to manage stress and build brain resilience. Trying a variety of challenging brain teasers is another great way to develop mental resilience.

LIS: INFO
Tumblr media
Kaito Watanabe navigates his complex life as both a corrupt police officer and an underworld kingpin with a remarkable sense of resilience and ingenuity, despite being completely deaf. His world, rich with the buzz of illicit deals and the hum of official duties, is one he moves through with a calculated grace. Here’s a glimpse into his daily routine:
Early Morning in the City’s Shadows
Kaito’s day begins in a small, minimalistic apartment on the edge of the city's criminal underbelly. The apartment is meticulously organised, reflecting his need for control in a life where chaos is a constant. As sunlight filters through the blinds, Kaito starts his day with a routine that feels almost ritualistic. He uses a vibrating alarm clock to wake up, feeling the soft buzz against his pillow before he opens his eyes.
He shuffles to the kitchen, where he prepares his coffee with precise, practiced movements. The morning silence is a comfort; it allows him to mentally map out the day ahead. He reviews his to-do list on a tablet, its screen providing clear, concise text and visual reminders. Each item is meticulously checked, from coordinating shady deals to attending obligatory police meetings.
At the Police Station
Kaito's presence at the police station is a carefully orchestrated performance. His colleagues are accustomed to his deafness, a fact he has managed to keep from becoming a liability. Instead, it becomes part of his persona—an enigma that adds to his mystique.
During meetings, Kaito relies heavily on written notes and text-to-speech apps to stay informed. He keeps his eyes fixed on the lips of his colleagues, using their facial expressions and gestures to gauge the mood of the conversation. He’s adept at reading body language and picking up on subtle cues that others might miss.
His assistants, a blend of loyal officers and discreet informants, are crucial to his operations. They communicate with him through short, direct messages and signals. Kaito's office is equipped with a top-of-the-line visual alert system, ensuring he’s always up-to-date on any urgent matters. Vibrating notifications and flashing lights signal any important events or updates, allowing him to respond promptly.
Navigating the Underworld
As an underworld kingpin, Kaito’s interactions are conducted with a strategic mix of intimidation and charm. In clandestine meetings, he uses a combination of written messages and hand signals to communicate with his associates. His ability to convey complex instructions through gestures and brief notes has earned him a reputation for being both efficient and mysterious.
He visits his various enterprises—black market operations, illicit clubs, and underground gambling dens—with a practiced ease. Surveillance systems and coded messages keep him informed of real-time developments. His subordinates are trained to ensure that every piece of information is relayed to him accurately, often using a system of signals and encrypted texts.
Kaito's keen sense of observation compensates for his lack of hearing. He pays close attention to the nuances of his surroundings: the shuffling of feet, the rustling of paper, and even the vibrations of a phone against a table. This acute awareness allows him to detect subtle shifts in the environment that might indicate trouble or opportunity.
Evening Reflections
As the day winds down, Kaito returns to his apartment. The evening is a time for reflection and planning. He reviews the day's events on his tablet, analysing reports and communications with a critical eye. His personal assistant, a highly efficient AI program, helps summarise and prioritise the information, ensuring that nothing slips through the cracks.
Before bed, Kaito enjoys a moment of solitude, often immersed in a book or reviewing intelligence reports. The quiet of his apartment is his sanctuary, a place where he can unwind and prepare for the next day’s challenges. Despite the duality of his life—operating in the shadows while maintaining a facade of legitimacy—he finds solace in his routines and the order he meticulously maintains.
Kaito Watanabe’s ability to excel in his multifaceted roles, despite his deafness, underscores his adaptability and sharp intellect. His methods may seem unconventional, but they are a testament to his skill in turning potential disadvantages into unique strengths.
