We think you'll find that every woman in her heart of hearts longs for three things: to be romanced, to play an irreplaceable role in a great adventure, and to unveil beauty. That's what makes a woman come alive.

di feisheng, who has wariness built in him since young, who has been taught cruelly about survival above all, who, even in amnesia, continues to doubt and suspect those around him, who withholds information from others before judging how to act because he knows he can't trust them based on words, and who, despite all of this, offers without more to li lianhua the precious, vulnerable truth that, if there is one thing he believes in all that's been said, it's that he did indeed want li lianhua to live

my sweet boy... my sweet, sweet boy.... im so sorry they pulled that on you
ok elephant in the room let's go: his English new voice is genuinely atrocious. I've heard some scenes out of context and i was already reeling, but now, in context, it genuinely makes me angry.
SuzuKen save me... save me SuzuKen... save m--
but genuinely like, almost all of the voice replacement still sound similar enough to their original English VA. except Zack. They went in a total other direction and it's so damn jarring. It gets worse as the scene goes on and you enter CC dialogues because you can genuinely point to scenes the line read is totally opposite one from the other. it's so jarring.

Right there. He sounds too cocky. That's not how Zack was feeling at the time.
"The Price of Freedom is Steep" isn't something Zack said jokingly, imo in both the 07 versions and in the Japanese, it's more a gentle resignation moment.
In Crisis Core this is what starts Zack's last stand, it is after all the Horrors. After Zack failed to save Angeal, and Sephiroth, and that going against Genesis took all of the emotional strength he still had because he was growing frustrated and tired and sad no one was ever listening to him, that he's just been trying so hard to stop things from going downhill, but every single times life throw him on a loop.
When Zack enters this fight he isn't thinking "yeah i can take them" like this line read gave the impression of. He's thinking "it's always another thing after the other huh".
Like. sorry it bugs me but like. please.
The scene was already a cheap shot at trying to have Fan Popular Zack on the screen but the English version really went in a direction that is so jarring compared to the take from the 07 game.

sighs.
at least he looks pretty but it's wild how even as fanservice goes, when you expect it to happen, it doesn't land huh. Maybe i would have been shocked if i didn't know about it coming in.
But man. What are they doing to you boy.
and then the scene cutting back to Aerith discussing the Specters and how if they walk to the fight against Sephiroth they'll find "Freedom" on the other side, "boundless freedom like the sky" because they're changing fate get it? get it?
Like ngl i thought i'd at least be hyped to see Zack.
But man i really hate everything around this whole thing that even just seeing him isn't making me excited huh.
and instead i feel just infinitely sad.
