Here have my 2022 Art Summary while I remind you that even when I'm a pair of glasses, is thanks to the human that I wear that I am able to draw with her own hands. She spent over 15 years crafting her skills and she actually knows how to draw hands ;3
My art might not be perfect, but at least I draw it myself (the human I wear) so, your so called "AI art" can go to hell uwu
Hire real people guys, they will be more understanding than those. Don’t want to hire real people? Well great news for, you can do it yourself if you know how to pick up a pen/pencil! ;3

Lessons Learned
Gisela Sofia B. Oclarit

Speaker 1 - Dr. Gamaliela Dumancas with the topic Intellectual Property Rights
Tumblr media
Intellectual property, sometimes known as IP, is a type of property that includes intangible works of human intelligence. IP, which might include innovations, symbols, photographs, works of art, and even literary works, delivers both assets and legal rights by safeguarding the moral and financial rights of the author. Additionally, IP promotes creation, its dissemination, and usage in real life. secrets of trade, patents, trademarks, and copyright are a few examples of intellectual property.
Lessons Learned that area applicable or will help your startup:
Throughout the lecture series, I was able to learn about the certainties that would support our start-up. We should have a trademark, which will be regarded as our intellectual property, in order to be seen by or recognized by our customers. A trademark is a symbol or word or words that uniquely identify a company. It is a way for customers to become familiar with our products and services, making it easier for them to recognize us on the market and distinguish us from our rivals. According to what Dr. Dumancas said, once a trademark is acknowledged as being in use, it is perpetually renewed for a period of 10 years. If we were to do this, it would be a great way to keep our startup alive since it would give us the freedom to operate it for as long as we thought fit.
Speaker 2- Prof. Sheila Poonon with the topic Startup Incubation Opportunities
Tumblr media
A facility that provides affordable workspace is known as a business incubator. This resource also offers mentoring, market information, and connections to investors. Both the Technology Transfer Act (RA 10055) and the Innovative Start Up Act (RA 11337) in the Philippines call for funding for start-up incubation. She said that there are several types of incubators, including those that focus on technology and support new business owners in starting and running technology-related enterprises. The Social Incubator program encourages young people's social and professional integration through the development and use of specialized services, innovative company concepts, and many other things. The Musuan Peak Incubation - PEAK, a technology business incubator business service, is one example of this, according to Maam Shella. It is situated in University Town, Musuan, 8710 Maramag, Bukidnon, in the province of Bukidnon and in the municipality of Maramag.
Lessons Learned that area applicable or will help your startup:
I recalled that Ma'am Shella had asked us what the parallels were between nurturing an egg and an emerging business before she began her talk. I discovered this connection between the incubation of enterprises and the incubation of eggs after hearing her lesson. We give the egg the right temperature or enough time to feed before it hatches, much as when we incubate an egg. Business incubation is also successful to some extent. Incubators aid in a better start for a concept before it is put into action. RA 11337 and RA 10055 will help us and our start-up in a variety of ways, including the creation of products, advertising, and growth. They will also provide support for our start-up's promotion, dissemination, and other efforts.
Speaker 3- Ms. Keren Happuch Lacadin with the topic Startup Ecosystem
Tumblr media
According to what I've studied about this subject, a network of people, companies, and related organizations known as the startup ecosystem works together to create and expand new enterprises. Startup ecosystems usually grow in a region that is compact and has a center of gravity, such a university or a concentration of tech companies. I also learned about SCALE, which stands for Start up Community and Locale Enhancement. SCALE is a Philippine start-up competition whose objective is to encourage and motivate Filipinos to create innovative ICT products and services that may also prove to be successful business ventures and help to address social problems.
Lessons Learned that area applicable or will help your startup:
The information provided is definitely very useful to starting or running our business. As said by Ms. Keren, it helped me realize that in order to develop, we must be able to learn how to work together with others, such as with business programs. Coming together is beginning. Keeping together is a progress. Working together is success, as Henry Ford once stated.

This week on Great Albums: a fresh look at quite possibly the 80s’ most hated band, A Flock of Seagulls! Spoiler: their music is good, people in the 90s and 00s were just mean. If you want to find out more about how having the absolute best hair in the business ended up backfiring on these poor sods, look no further than my latest video. Or the transcript of it, which follows below the break!
Welcome to Passionate Reply, and welcome to Great Albums! Today, I’m going to be diving into a discussion of quite possibly the most derided and lambasted music group of the 1980s: A Flock of Seagulls. With a strange name, a perhaps painfully stylish aesthetic, and equally trendy and of-the-moment music, that was, for a time, inescapable in popular culture, their legacy forms a perfect target for the ridicule all popular things must face in due time. But even moreso than that, I think A Flock of Seagulls have become not only a punchline in and of themselves, but also a summation of everything that was dreadful and excessive about the early 1980s, with its “Second British Invasion” of synthesiser-driven New Wave. I can think of no better example of this kind of abuse than a famous line from the 1999 comedy film, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. The film is largely a love letter to the 1960s and its Mod aesthetics, and the protagonist, a super-spy unfrozen from this era in time, dismisses the history and culture of the 1970s and 80s as nothing more than “a gas shortage, and A Flock of Seagulls.” But at the time of this writing, we’re about as far away from Austin Powers as the film was from the release of this album, the band’s 1982 debut LP, so I think it’s been long enough that we can start to re-evaluate A Flock of Seagulls’ rightful place in music history.
While this self-titled album was the group’s first long-player, their first release was the 1981 single “It’s Not Me Talking.” Notably, this track was actually produced by the legendary Bill Nelson, who also released it on their behalf via his personal label, Cocteau Records. Ever since discovering this for myself, I’ve found the connection between Nelson and A Flock of Seagulls fascinating, and also satisfying. Despite the gulf between their respective reputations, I do think their work has a lot in common, at the end of the day: swirling washes of synth disrupted by screaming guitars, not to mention that shared interest in Midcentury rock and roll aesthetics.
Music: “It’s Not Me Talking”
These two acts would, of course, go their separate ways shortly after, and they ended up in completely opposite camps, with Nelson becoming a cult favourite with little crossover success, and A Flock of Seagulls going on to create what is, undoubtedly, one of the most iconic songs of the entire decade.
Music: “I Ran”
What does one even say about a song like “I Ran”? Over the years, it’s certainly gotten somewhat overplayed, but I can’t really hold that against it. It’s just a damn good song. Both ethereally menacing as well as catchy and rather accessible, “I Ran” takes the atmosphere suggested by “It’s Not Me Talking” and kicks it into another gear, with a harder-hitting hook and the introduction of that highly distinctive and of-the-moment echoing guitar effect. Some will hear it as little more than evidence that the song is hopelessly dated, but I’ve never thought of it as anything other than satisfying to listen to. If you ask me, I figure all art that exists is essentially “a product of its time”--nobody ever said Michelangelo Buonarroti’s David was a lousy sculpture, just because you can easily tell it was made during the Italian Renaissance. At any rate, I’d encourage everyone reading to go back and listen to it again, trying to maintain a little neutrality. I’d recommend the album cut of it, which is significantly longer than the single version, and features a rich intro that sets the scene before that famous guitar ever makes an appearance, which I think really adds to the experience. By some reckonings, A Flock of Seagulls are sometimes considered a “one-hit wonder,” but while they certainly are remembered chiefly for “I Ran,” this album’s other singles were moderately successful as well.
Music: “Space Age Love Song”
“Space Age Love Song” is perhaps the band’s second best-remembered single, and takes their sound in a markedly different direction than that of “I Ran.” “I Ran” won popular acclaim by finding a new home for the guitar, in the midst of a sea of synth, and pushed A Flock of Seagulls into a similar space as acts like the Cars and Duran Duran, who had enough mainstream rock sensibilities to sneak a lot of synthesiser usage onto American rock radio...much as one might sneak spinach into tomato sauce when feeding picky children. But I think “Space Age Love Song” is much more palatable to listeners of pop, synth- or otherwise. It’s softer in texture, and really almost dreamy, capturing the hazy, buoyant feeling of limerence as well as any pop song ever has. I’m tempted to compare it to another synth-driven classic, whose influence towers over this period in electronic music: the great Giorgio Moroder’s “I Feel Love.” Much like “I Feel Love,” “Space Age Love Song” combines simple, almost banal love lyrics with an evocative electronic soundscape, painting a picture of an enchanting, high-tech future where human feelings like love have remained comfortably recognizable across centuries or millennia. A similar theme of futuristic love pervades the album’s second single, “Modern Love Is Automatic.”
Music: “Modern Love Is Automatic”
While “Space Age Love Song” uses simplistic lyricism to portray the relatable universality of falling in love, “Modern Love Is Automatic” gives us the album’s most complex narrative. In a world where “young love’s forbidden,” we meet a pair of star-crossed lovers prevented from being together by some sort of dystopian authority. The male member of this union, introduced as the “cosmic man,” is apparently imprisoned for the crime of loving, but the text suggests that he may escape from this prison--or, perhaps, even be freed from it. The title, repeated quite frequently throughout the track, is perhaps the mantra of this anti-love society, a piece of propaganda being drilled into us as thoroughly as it is into these subjects: Modern love is automatic, with no need for messy, unpredictable human input.
It’s also worth noting that the song is consciously set in “old Japan,” deliberately locating it in the “exotic” East. While East Asia was strongly associated with refined, perhaps futuristic culture, I can’t help but think there’s a more pejorative sentiment operating here, rooted in stereotypes of Asian cultures unduly policing sexual freedom, and other forms of personal expression and self-determination. Ultimately, despite its futuristic trappings, “Modern Love Is Automatic” isn’t really a song about technology at all, but rather authoritarianism. “Telecommunication,” on the other hand, engages more directly with that theme.
Music: “Telecommunication”
“Telecommunication” was also released prior to the self-titled album proper, and was also produced by Bill Nelson. While structurally similar to “Modern Love Is Automatic,” with an oft-repeated title, brief verses, and a generally repetitive musical structure full of meandering guitar, its text quite plainly discusses the titular field of technology, in a seemingly non-judgmental fashion--though it could be argued that the fairly upbeat music suggests a positive outlook on things like radio and TV. The one hitch in all of it is the very end of the last verse, which sets the song in the “nuclear age”--a nod, perhaps, to the darker applications of 20th Century technology. “Telecommunication” is perhaps indebted less to figures like Moroder, and moreso to Kraftwerk, who first solidified the rich tradition of stoic synth thumpers about everyday machines like cars, trains, and, of course, nuclear energy. I’m also tempted to compare it to an earlier work of Bill Nelson’s group Be-Bop Deluxe, “Electrical Language,” another bubbly number that playfully bats this concept back and forth.
The theme of “quotidian technology” is also present on the cover of this album, which features an interior shot of a living room, centered around a television set. The TV displays a figure playing guitar--perhaps one of those heroic rock pioneers of the Midcentury like Buddy Holly, whom Nelson was so keen to imitate. But what’s most immediately striking about this cover is its beautiful colour palette, full of deep, saturated jewel tones, treated softly with an “airbrush” style effect. Despite being a somewhat mundane scene, the image also features fanciful, imaginative touches: the floor of this room is actually a miniature beach landscape, with the “floor” beneath the TV actually being the surface of the ocean, and the TV appears to be surrounded by a colourful, glowing group of birds. Given the beachy surroundings, we could perhaps interpret them as the titular seagulls. It’s tempting to think of this scene as a representation of how technology can sweep us away, out of our everyday existence and into something richer and more exciting.
But perhaps it’s not so simple--note also the open window in the top left, whose curtain appears to be agitated by some sort of motion in the air. Perhaps these birds are not the products of television fantasy, but rather have flown in from the window, and hence hail from the “real world?” Given how tracks like “Space Age Love Song” and “Modern Love Is Automatic” tackle the theme of the mundane meeting the fantastical, I think this complex and arresting image is a great fit for the album.
While their self-titled debut spawned multiple recognizable hits, A Flock of Seagulls never came anywhere close to recapturing its success. For the most part, they struggled to remain relevant as time wore on, largely abandoning the sonic footprint of their first album, and chasing after new trends in music technology such as digital synthesisers. They would eventually break up during the mid-1980s, and though they’ve reunited in order to perform live several times, the book is probably closed on A Flock of Seagulls. Personally, I can’t help but wonder what might have been if they had stuck to their musical roots a bit more. You get a bit of that on their third LP, 1984’s The Story of a Young Heart, which thankfully brings back that iconic echoing guitar, and does so without sounding too much like a simple retread of “I Ran.” Out of all their other work, it’s the album I would most recommend to admirers of this debut LP.
Music: “Remember David”
My favourite track on A Flock of Seagulls’ debut LP is “Messages”--not to be confused with the track of the same name by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark! Moreso than anything else on the album, “Messages” has this aggressive, insistent, driving quality, and feels less like yacht rock, and more like punk rock. Despite not being released as a single, I think it’s a very strong track that’s quite easy to get into. That’s everything for today--thanks for listening!

The 5 Biggest Technology Trends In 2021 Everyone Must Get Ready For Now
Tumblr media
Another factor this is clean is that nowadays’s maximum vital tech traits will play a huge component in assisting us address and adapt to the numerous demanding situations dealing with us. From the shift to operating from domestic to new regulations approximately how we meet and engage in public spaces, tech traits could be the riding pressure in coping with the change.
In many ways, Covid-19 will act as a catalyst for an entire host of adjustments that have been already at the playing cards anyway, way to our an increasing number of on line and virtual lives. Things will simply appear greater fast now, with necessity (lengthy stated because the mom of invention) because the riding pressure. And must or not it's the case that – as positive US presidents have predicted – Covid-19 “magically disappears” – the adjustments it has introduced approximately will now no longer, as we are able to have discovered to do loads of factors greater effectively and safely.
1. Artificial Intelligence (AI)
AI is certainly certainly considered one among the largest tech traits on the moment, and at some point of 2021 it becomes an excellent greater precious device for assisting us to interpret and apprehend the sector round us. The extent of records we're gathering on healthcare, contamination costs, and the achievement of measures we take to save you the unfold of contamination will preserve to boom. This manner that gadget getting to know algorithms becomes higher knowledgeable and an increasing number of state-of-the-art withinside the answers they discover for us.
From pc imaginative and prescient structures tracking the potential of public regions to studying the interactions exposed via touch tracing projects, self-getting to know algorithms will spot connections and insights that could cross left out with the aid of using guide human analysis. They will assist us expect call for for offerings from hospitals and different healthcare carriers, and permit directors to make higher choices approximately while and wherein to install resources.
For enterprise, the venture could be to apprehend the converting styles of consumer behavior. More human interest will take vicinity on line – from purchasing and socializing to digital operating environments, meetings, and recruitment. During 2021 we are able to count on the equipment we use to research those behavioral shifts to come to be greater state-of-the-art and an increasing number of suit the price range and infrastructure necessities of increasingly organizations.
2. Robotics, Drones, and Vehicle Automation
As the extent of passengers the usage of public delivery fluctuates from week to week, relying on neighborhood situations, projects round self-riding motors will preserve at an growing pace. Driving performance throughout public delivery networks could be a concern for provider carriers in addition to civic authorities, wherein lowering human exertions prices will assist stability the uncertainty round consumer call for.
In current years we've visible the emergence of robots withinside the care and assisted dwelling sectors, and those becomes an increasing number of vital, in particular on the subject of interacting with participants of society who're maximum prone to contamination, inclusive of the elderly. Rather than completely changing the human interplay with caregivers this is so vital to many, we are able to count on robot gadgets for use to offer new channels of communication, inclusive of get entry to to 24/7 in-domestic assist, in addition to to certainly offer companionship at instances while it could now no longer be secure to be sending nursing workforce into homes. Additionally, groups locating themselves with premises that, even as empty, nonetheless require protection and upkeep, will flip to robotics carriers for offerings inclusive of cleansing and security. This interest has already caused hovering inventory fees for companies worried in presenting robots.
Drones could be used to supply important medicinal drug and, prepared with pc imaginative and prescient algorithms, used to reveal footfall in public regions in an effort to pick out locations wherein there's an extended chance of viral transmission.
3. The As-A-Service Revolution
“As-a-provider” – the availability of offerings that we want to stay and paintings via cloud-primarily based totally, on-call for systems – is the important thing that has placed the alternative tech traits we speak approximately nowadays in attain of anybody. It’s the cause why AI and robotics are a opportunity for pretty much any enterprise or organization, irrespective of their length or price range. Thanks to cloud services from groups like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and an ever-developing horde of startups and spinoffs, innovators in all fields can install modern-day tech with little in advance funding in equipment, system or specialised people.
As the continuing pandemic rages round the sector, we've sincerely visible that groups that depend on cloud to offer scalable answers as-a-provider are prospering. Take Zoom, for instance, which has fast come to be a family call way to the velocity with which it turned into capable of upload servers and boom its insurance and great of provider. This turned into because of its cloud-primarily based totally nature and its partnerships with its personal provider carriers, that have been capable of fast boom potential to fulfill call for. In 2021 and beyond, that is going to come to be an increasing number of vital and greater opportunities will open up for everyone.
4. 5G and superior connectivity
Faster and greater dependable net does not simply imply we are able to load webpages greater fast and spend much less time looking ahead to movies to release on Youtube. Each successive develop in cell connectivity from 3G onwards has unlocked new use instances for the net. 3G made internet surfing and records-pushed offerings beneficial on cell gadgets, 4G caused the increase of streaming video and track systems as bandwidths extended, and 5G, likewise, will open greater doorways in phrases of what's possible.
5G manner that offerings counting on superior technology inclusive of augmented truth and digital truth (mentioned below) in addition to cloud-primarily based totally gaming systems like Google's Stadia or NVidia's GeForce Now come to be a feasible proposition, everywhere at any time. They additionally threaten to make cable and fiber-primarily based totally networks redundant, with their want for us to be tethered to a selected location.
In short, 5G and different superior, high-pace networks make all the different traits we speak right here to be had everywhere, any time. Complex gadget getting to know packages counting on actual-time get entry to to Big Data reassets may be performed withinside the area, through automation. A first rate instance is Norwegian fishery operator Salmar that makes use of a 5G community to automate the care and feeding of its fish. Image reputation algorithms are used to hit upon which fish are over or under-feeding, and robotically dispense meals and medicinal drug had to maintain them healthy. Initiatives like this could come to be an increasing number of vital at some point of 2021, wherein organizations appearance to boom automation throughout their workforces.
5. Extended Reality  – Virtual and Augmented Reality.
These phrases cowl generation that makes use of glasses or headsets to challenge pc-generated imagery without delay into the person's area of imaginative and prescient. When it's far superimposed over what the person is viewing withinside the actual international, it's far AR. And while it's far used to vicinity the person into a wholly pc-generated environment, it's far VR.
During subsequent yr we are able to once more count on to look those, along with the alternative traits mentioned right here, helping in tackling demanding situations posed with the aid of using the modern-day international situation. Largely this could contain permitting us to keep away from doubtlessly risky conditions wherein there will be a chance of viral transmission. For instance, scientific examinations and prognosis can an increasing number of be finished remotely. A answer to be had to opticians permits eye exams to be finished completely in VR, as high-definition cameras deliver a clean picture of the patient's eye. An AR device then permits the consumer to browse the variety of glasses on provide and notice what they seem like on their personal face while not having to depart their domestic.
We may even see an boom withinside the use of VR and AR equipment inside education. This will lessen the want for us to paintings in crowded study room situations – if now no longer totally, then as a minimum in regions and at some point of instances while it's far recognized that transmission costs are high.
And as greater records at the situations and way wherein viral transmission takes vicinity will become to be had, AR equipment could be used to present out actual-time warnings while we circulate via regions wherein the contamination is thought to have unfold. Even easy steps like reminding us to scrub our arms while we contact a door manage in a public area or issuing an alert while a tool senses that we've touched our face with out washing our arms, ought to assist to shop lives and forestall us spreading infection across the actual-phrase environments we inhabit and circulate via.

Fandom
Wrote this a little while back. Thought I posted it here, but I can’t find it in my tags, so here it is again. Sometimes, the internet is a great place for fans. It gives us spaces to spread information and media related to the things we enjoy. It lets us connect with new friends and sub-hobbies like prop building, costuming, or fan art communities. As nerd culture has slid further out of the shadows, though, I don't always think the media world handles it as well as it could.
Infinity War is out. Reviews are great. Been a long time comic reader. I'm intimately familiar with both the Infinity Gauntlet and Infinity War comic book events. It met or exceeded every mark for me.
But about every second pop culture article in my feed is focusing on shortcomings. What they think should have happened. What character they think should have been more involved, or more important. Parts the author just didn't "get", usually out of ignorance of the source material or medium.
And there's a place for that criticism. No piece of media is without faults. But before Infinity War, it was Last Jedi, or the last Star Trek movie, or the last DC vehicle, or the latest installment in a decades old franchise like Alien. Each one spawning their own "angry so-and-so" YouTube reviews. Their own battery of "not good enough" articles. Their own "How it should have ended," and "Honest" trailers. Piles of scathing, dissatisfied commentary, often verging on fanfiction with the amount of fervor people want to reshape the product with.
And, just like the media experience we have tailored to us by Facebook and Google, we find ourselves becoming reflections of a media system that was designed to mirror us and cater to our interests, rather than find ourselves enriched. And it's to the point where I have a hard time believing many of the reactions are genuine.
I have an especially hard time believing much of the criticism because so much of it relies on misunderstanding. If the exciting new piece of media is an adaptation, people are unwilling to accept the changes that were made out of a logistical need, like a reduction in the number of characters involved in a particular plot (Game of Thrones, Captain America: Civil War) even though the time and budget needed to bring those characters in would be prohibitive. It completely glosses over any clever way the makers found to compensate.
Likewise, for adaptations, ignorance of the nature of the source material can lead to glaring misunderstandings in the way a fantasy world functions. People point out "plot holes" that are easily closed by even a cursory knowledge of the source material. In another example, a popular complaint about the Marvel films is that the heroes keep facing what are basically evil versions of themselves as their first villains. Anyone with a basic knowledge of comics can tell you that a character's origin story almost always features the hero overcoming a villain with similar abilities to their own. It establishes why they're good/talented/responsible by showing us the antithesis of these qualities.
In sci-fi, the arguments usually boil down to how super science and future technology does or does not work. "Lightsabers wouldn't actually behave like that," "Why do the First Order's energy weapons arc in space?" Going back to that basic knowledge of comics, you often run into "Ant-Man actually wouldn't be able to retain his mass when shrunk so blah blah blah," or "If Flash ran that fast he'd catch on fire."
Part of suspension of disbelief is having the basic understanding that we don't have to understand the textbook intricacies of what's happening. That however the fantastic elements function within their universes is how they function, end of story. And that overlaying the limitations of a non-fictional world onto that of a fictional one robs the fiction of all its value and luster. If you like Star Trek, but haven't come to terms with their loose, pulp sci-fi usage of science, for instance, you're the one failing to meet the product where it's at. It's not failing to reach you.
Additionally, people don't seem to understand the general tiers of quality in visual media. I generally enjoy the CW superhero shows. They are not the cream of the crop. They couldn't be. They're a network television product bound by the rules that dictate that branch of the industry. They are really awesome /for what they are/ and if you can understand what parameters they're restricted by, you can enjoy them for exactly what they are.
A miniseries or Netflix show is the next step up in quality. You can expect much more from them because they operate under less restrictions. And, again, we have another bump up in quality for films. You can expect even more quality then, because the restrictions governing making a film are different than making a show. Understanding what level of quality you're signing up for and adequately tempering your expectations isn't just smart; it's essential.
So we consume all of this critical media and are thusly encouraged to be similarly critical. But there is such a thing as being too stringent. There is such a thing as being too picky and hiding it behind a guise of intellectualism. And there's a sort of entitlement. A demand that the media we consume conform to something as fickle as our whimsy, or else we jealously withhold our enjoyment. It creates a drive to treat everything enjoyable as a guilty pleasure, with far too much emphasis on the guilt.
I'm done having to justify myself for enjoying things. I'm tired of posting about superheroes, scifi, and general fiction only to receive a long list of what my friends didn't like about them. I don't want to hear how you would have done it, who you would have cast, or how you'd have it end.
Had I the patience and the resources, I'd launch my own YouTube channel. Something like, "Satisfied Reviews". I'd talk about all the things that met or exceeded my expectations and leave room at the end for a single legitimate complaint. I'd end up catching flack for not being "objective" enough, but when almost every other voice in popular criticism is focused on tearing down or ripping apart, you have to have a voice to counterbalance that. You have to have someone who's still having fun. You have to have someone with something nice to say. And maybe if you don't have anything nice to say, you shouldn't say anything at all. A given piece of media is not bad just because you didn't enjoy it.

Stay Calm And Read Smashing
About The Author
Juggling between three languages on a daily basis, Iris is known for her love of linguistics, arts, web design and typography, as well as her goldmine of … More about Iris …
It’s that time of the month! Join us as we share the latest news and highlight the things we’ve been working on and have also enjoyed reading over the past month.
It’s nice to have an overview of the most important things in one place, but do feel free to follow us on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and subscribe to our RSS feed as well as our bi-weekly newsletter. We like helping you stay on top of things and making life at least just a little bit easier!
For all the times we asked folks about Smashing, most still seem to believe that we’re some sort of large publishing company situated somewhere in the United States — both of which are wrong. It all started in Freiburg, Germany, and the team consists of folks scattered all over the world — with most of us not working fulltime for Smashing.
That’s right, working remotely is quite familiar to us, and so with the current situation going on with COVID-19 that is making everyone uneasy, we’d like to make the best of things and help our friends who are having to work or lead teams remotely for the first time. Our editor-in-chief, Rachel Andrew, has prepared a nice post to help you stay connected and keep learning while we go through this together.
You may have already heard that SmashingConf SF has been postponed to November due to the unfortunate travel restrictions and many other reasons. It was truly a difficult decision for the team to make, but we believe it is the best way forward — safety and health always come first.
Without further ado, here’s a short update of things going on at Smashing and some super creative work shared from and to the community!
Happy reading — from my computer to yours!
Designing With Ethics In Mind

There is still quite a bit of work to do on the web, but our hope is that with this book, you will be equipped with enough tooling to slowly move a company towards a more sustainable and healthy digital footprint!
Of course, you can jump to the table of contents right away, or download a free PDF excerpt to get a first impression of the book — we’re sure you won’t be disappointed! Read our official release post with all the details →

From live designing to live debugging, all of our speakers like to go into detail and show useful examples from their own projects on the big screen.
Here are some talks you may like to watch and learn from:
The first SmashingConf took place in Freiburg back in 2012, so there are so many more talks you can watch. See all SmashingConf videos →
Shining The Spotlight On React, Redux And Electron
Mark your calendars! Trending Topics On SmashingMag
We publish a new article every day on various topics that are current in the web industry. Here are some that our readers seemed to enjoy the most and have recommended further:
“Why Are We Talking About CSS4?” by Rachel Andrew Around the web and within the CSS Working Group, there has been some discussion about whether we should specify a version of CSS — perhaps naming it CSS4. In this article, Rachel Andrew rounds up some of the pros and cons of doing so, and asks for your feedback on the suggestion.
“Setting Height And Width On Images Is Important Again” by Barry Pollard Thanks to some recent changes in browsers, it’s now well worth setting width and height attributes on your images to prevent layout shifts and improve the experience of your site visitors.
“Setting Up Tailwind CSS In A React Project” by Blessing Krofegha This article introduces Tailwind CSS, a CSS library that gives you all of the building blocks you need to build bespoke designs without opinionated styles. You’ll also learn how to seamlessly set up Tailwind CSS in a React project.
“Introducing Alpine.js: A Tiny JavaScript Framework” by Phil Smith Ever built a website and reached for jQuery, Bootstrap, Vue.js or React to acheive some basic user interaction? Alpine.js is a fraction of the size of these frameworks because it involves no build steps and provides all of the tools you need to build a basic user interface.
“How To Design Mobile Apps For One-Hand Usage” by Maitrik Kataria 90% of the smartphones sold today have >5-inch displays. Bigger screen real estate presents newer challenges and opportunities for app makers and designers. Let’s look at how designing apps for one-handed usage can solve those challenges.
Best Picks From Our Newsletter
We’ll be honest: Every second week, we struggle with keeping the Smashing Newsletter issues at a moderate length — there are just so many talented folks out there working on brilliant projects! So, without wanting to make this monthly update too long either, we’re shining the spotlight on the following projects:
P.S.: A huge thank you to Cosima Mielke for writing and preparing these posts!
Find And Fix Errors In Your Designs
We all know those moments when we are so immersed in a project that we lose the distance we need to be able to catch little inconsistencies: an incorrect border-radius around an image or missing styles or text, for example. If you’re designing in Figma, the free and open-source plugin Design Lint makes finding and fixing errors like these easy so that no bug makes it into production.
A free and open-source plugin for Figma built to help you find and fix errors in your designs.: Design Lint.
Design Lint checks for missing text, fill, stroke, and effects styles, and catches incorrect border-radius values on all your layers. To not interrupt your workflow, the plugin automatically updates as you fix errors. The repo is available on GitHub, so feel free to write specific rules to tailor the plugin to your needs.
Learn CSS Positioning With… Cats!
Could there be a better way to learn CSS positioning as with a bunch of friendly cats? That’s probably what Ahmad Shadeed thought, too, when he created his interactive guide to how CSS positioning works.
Meow! Ahmad Shadeed has prepared a great guide for you to learn everything about CSS positioning!
The guide teaches you to use CSS to position three cartoon cats and their blanket inside a box, and once you’ve grasped the concept, you can start tinkering with the interactive demo that visualizes how the result changes as you edit the values. Now who said learning can’t be fun?
Intimacy, An Interactive Short Poem
An inspiring experiment comes from the French graphic and interaction design student Thibaud Giffon: “Intimacy”. The interactive short poem uses abstract images, sound, and text to explore intimacy from different angles.
The “Mixed Up” musical poem is brought to life (sound ON) by just moving your cursor across the cords. Try it out!
Compassion, distance, confusion, touch — these are four of the eight chapters that make up the poem; and each one of them reflects the topic in its own, unique way: with warm and harmonious waves or circles that melt into each other but also with dissonant strings or colorful bubbles that burst as they make space for themselves. Beautiful!
All Your SVG Icons In One Place
Having one central place to organize all your assets is always a good thing, not only for teams — to keep track of what you have and to quickly find what you’re looking for. The free cross-platform app Iconset is such a place: it helps you collect, customize, share, and manage all your SVG icon sets.
Organizing SVG icons all in one place with Iconset.
To make it easier to find the icon you’re looking for, you can organize your icons in sets or with tags, and, once you’ve found the icon you need, you can drag it directly into your favorite tool. A real timesaver. Iconset supports cloud services like Dropbox or OneDrive so that all your icons are always in sync between team members. The app is available for Mac and Windows.
An Ancient Hero’s WebGL Adventure
A reluctant hero on a quest he never asked for — that’s the story behind the browser-based adventure video game Heraclos. Set in ancient Greece, the young Heraclos stumbles across an amphora that belongs to one of the gods. He is declared to be the chosen one and gets sent off to climb the secret mountain and return the amphora to his owner.
Heraclos, an adventure video game made in WebGL.
What makes the game so noteworthy is the fun twist in the interaction between the hero and the god (a parody of common heroic stories) but also the technical background: Heraclos was designed in only three months by a group of students at the Gobelins school of images in Paris — with WebGL and Cannon.js. A great example of what’s possible on the web.
An Open-Source Screen Recorder Built With Web Technology
Have you heard of Kap, yet? The open-source screen recorder is one that is definitely worth checking out if you’re frequently doing screen recordings.
Kap, an open-source screen recorder built with web technology.
Built with web technologies, Kap produces high-quality recordings in GIF, MP4, WebM, or APNG formats. You can include audio (even from your microphone), highlight clicks, and trim the recordings. As a bonus goodie, there are also options to share your recorded GIFs on Giphy, deploy them with ZEIT now, or upload them to Streamable. Perfect for technical demos.
Open Peeps, A Free Hand-Drawn Illustration Library
584,688 possible combinations. That’s the number of different characters you could create with Pablo Stanley’s hand-drawn illustration library Open Peeps.
“Open Peeps,” a hand-drawn illustration library created by Pablo Stanley.
Open Peeps lets you mix and match different vector elements to create diverse personalities: combine clothing and hairstyles, change emotion with facial expressions, set the scene with different poses — the possibilities are sheer endless. And if you’re in a hurry, Pablo also prepared some ready-to-download Peeps that you can use right away. Open Peeps is released under a CC0 license, so you are free to use the illustrations in both personal and commercial projects. A great way to add a handmade touch to your design.
How To Make Inputs More Accessible
In 2019, WebAim analyzed the accessibility of the top one million websites, with a shocking conclusion: the percentage of error-free pages was estimated to be under one percent. To make our sites inclusive and usable for people who rely on assistive technology, we need to get the basics of semantic HTML right. With its credo of starting small, sharing, and working together, Oscar Braunert’s article on inclusive inputs is a great starting point to do so.
Starting off with the basics of WAI, ARIA, and WCAG, the article explores how to make inputs more accessible. The tips can be implemented without changing the user interface, and, as Oscar puts it: “If in doubt, just do it. Nobody will notice. Except some of your users. And they will thank you for it.”
An Open-Source Font For Developers
High readability, quick text scanning, no distraction — these are just some of the demands developers have on a typeface. Well, the free and open-source typeface JetBrains Mono meets all of them beautifully.
JetBrains Mono’s typeface forms are simple and free from unnecessary details. Rendered in small sizes, the text looks crisper.
To do so, Jet Brains Mono takes advantage of some small but mighty details: Compared to other monospace fonts, the height of JetBrains Mono is increased while the characters remain standard in width to keep code lines to the length developers expect. To improve readability even further, 138 code-specific ligatures reduce noise so that your eyes need to process less and whitespace becomes more balanced. Clever! JetBrains Mono comes in four weights and supports 145 languages.
The Ultimate Guide To iframes
With a lot of articles advising against them, iframes don’t have the best reputation. JavaScript developer Nada Rifki sees things differently: She suggests not to let their reputation prevent you from relying on iframes. After all, they have many legitimate use cases.
The ultimate guide to iframes written by Nada Rifki.
To help you form your own opinion on this controversial element, Nada wrote an ultimate guide to iframes which explores iframe features and how to use them; tricky situations where iframes might come in handy; last but not least, how you can secure your iframe against potential vulnerabilities. A great opportunity to see things from a different perspective.
A Guide To Console Commands
The capabilities of the developer’s debugging console have evolved significantly in the past years — from a means to report errors to automatically logging information like network requests and security errors or warnings. There’s also a way for a website’s JavaScript to trigger various commands that output to the console for debugging purposes. And while these features are mostly consistent between browsers, there are also some functional differences.
“A Guide to Console Commands” by Travis Almand
If you’re looking for an overview of what console commands are capable of, Travis Almand put together a helpful guide. It covers Firefox and Chrome and examines various commands that can be used in the browser’s console output or with JavaScript. A handy summary.

After months of hard work, the “The Ethical Design Handbook” is finally here — and it’s shipping! The response has already been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re excited to share reviews with you soon.

I've been cooking this argument for the last two years. I think it's finally ready for public consumption.

For IGTV, Instagram needs slow to mean steady
Instagram has never truly failed at anything, but judging by modest initial view counts, IGTV could get stuck with a reputation as an abandoned theater if the company isn’t careful. It’s no flop, but the long-form video hub certainly isn’t an instant hit like Instagram Stories. Two months after that launched in 2016, Instagram was happy to trumpet how its Snapchat clone had hit 100 million users. Yet two months after IGTV’s launch, the Facebook subsidiary has been silent on its traction.
“It’s a new format. It’s different. We have to wait for people to adopt it and that takes time,” Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom told me. “Think of it this way: we just invested in a startup called IGTV, but it’s small, and it’s like Instagram was ‘early days.’”
It’s indeed too early for a scientific analysis, and Instagram’s feed has been around since 2010, so it’s obviously not a fair comparison, but we took a look at the IGTV view counts of some of the feature’s launch partner creators. Across six of those creators, their recent feed videos are getting roughly 6.8X as many views as their IGTV posts. If IGTV’s launch partners that benefited from early access and guidance aren’t doing so hot, it means there’s likely no free view count bonanza in store from other creators or regular users.
They, and IGTV, will have to work for their audience. That’s already proving difficult for the standalone IGTV app. Though it peaked at the #25 overall US iPhone app and has seen 2.5 million downloads across iOS and Android according to Sensor Tower, it’s since dropped to #1497 and seen a 94 percent decrease in weekly installs to just 70,000 last week.
Instagram will have to be in it for the long haul if it wants to win at long-form video. Entering the market 13 years after YouTube with a vertical format no one’s quite sure what to do with, IGTV must play the tortoise. If it can avoid getting scrapped or buried, and offer the right incentives and flexibility to creators, IGTV could deliver the spontaneous video viewing experience Instagram lacks. Otherwise, IGTV risks becoming the next Google Plus — a ghost town inside an otherwise thriving product ecosystem.
A glitzy, glitchy start
Instagram gave IGTV a red carpet premiere June 20th in hopes of making it look like the new digital hotspot. The San Francisco launch event offered attendees several types of avocado toast, spa water and ‘Gram-worthy portrait backdrops reminiscent of the Color Factory or Museum of Ice Cream. Instagram hadn’t held a flashy press event since the 2013 launch of video sharing, so it pulled out all the stops. Balloon sculptures lined the entrance to a massive warehouse packed with social media stars and ad execs shouting to each other over the din of the DJ.
But things were rocky from the start. Leaks led TechCrunch to report on the IGTV name and details in the preceding weeks. Technical difficulties with Systrom’s presentation pushed back the start, but not the rollout of IGTV’s code. Tipster Jane Manchun Wong sent TechCrunch screenshots of the new app and features a half hour before it was announced, and Instagram’s own Business Blog jumped the gun by posting details of the launch. The web already knew how IGTV would let people upload vertical videos up to an hour long and browse them through categories like “Popular” and “For You” by the time Systrom took the stage.

“What I’m most proud of is that Instagram took a stand and tried a brand new thing that is frankly hard to pull off. Full-screen vertical video that’s mobile only. That doesn’t exist anywhere else,” Systrom tells me. It was indeed ambitious. Creators were already comfortable making short-form vertical Snapchat Stories by the time Instagram launched its own version. IGTV would have to start from scratch.
Systrom sees the steep learning curve as a differentiator, though. “One of the things I like most about the new format is that it’s actually fairly difficult to just take videos that exist online and simply repost them. That’s not true in feed. That basically forces everyone to create new stuff,” Systrom tells me. “It’s not to say that there isn’t other stuff on there but in general it incentivizes people to produce new things from scratch. And that’s really what we’re looking for. Even if the volume of that stuff at the beginning is smaller than what you might see on the popular page [of Instagram Explore].”
Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom unveils IGTV at the glitzy June 20th launch event
Instagram forced creators to adopt this proprietary format. But it forget to train Stories stars how to entertain us for five or 15 minutes, not 15 seconds, or convince landscape YouTube moguls to purposefully shoot or crop their clips for the way we normally hold our phones.
IGTV’s Popular page features plenty of random viral pap, foreign language content, and poor cropping
That should have been the real purpose of the launch party — demonstrating a variety of ways to turn these format constraints or lack thereof into unique content. Vertical video frames people better than places, and the length allows sustained eye-to-lens contacts that can engender an emotional connection. But a shallow array of initial content and too much confidence that creators would figure it out on their own deprived IGTV of emergent norms that other videographers could emulate to wet their feet.
Now IGTV feels haphazard, with trashy viral videos and miscropped ports amongst its Popular section alongside a few creators trying to produce made-for-IGTV talk shows and cooking tutorials. It’s yet to have its breakout “Chewbacca Mom” or “Rubberbanded Watermelon” blockbuster like Facebook Live. Even an interview with mega celeb Kylie Jenner only had 11,000 views.
Instagram wants to put the focus on the author, not the individual works of art. “Because we don’t have full text search and you can’t just search any random thing, it’s about the creators” Systrom explains. “I think that at its base level that it’s personality driven and creator driven means that you’re going to get really unique content that you won’t find anywhere else and that’s the goal.”
Yet being unique requires extra effort that creators might not invest if they’re unsure of the payoff in either reach or revenue. Michael Sayman, formerly Facebook’s youngest employee who was hired at age 17 to build apps for teens and who now works for Google, summed it up saying: “Many times in my own career, I’ve tried to make something with a unique spin or a special twist because I felt that’s the only way I could make my product stand out from the crowd, only to realize that it was those very twists and spins that made my products feel out of place and confusing to users. Sometimes, the best product is one that doesn’t create any new twists, but rather perfects and builds on top of what has been proven to already be extremely successful.”
A fraction of feed views
The one big surprise of the launch event was where IGTV would exist. Instagram announced it’d live in a standalone IGTV app, but also as a feature in the main app accessible from an orange button atop the home screen that would occasionally call out that new content was inside. It could have had its own carousel like Stories or been integrated into Explore until it was ready for primetime.
Instead, it was ignorable. IGTV didn’t get the benefit of the home screen spotlight like Instagram Stories. Blow past that one orange button and avoid downloading the separate app, and users could go right on tapping and scrolling through Instagram without coming across IGTV’s longer videos.
View counts of the launch partners reflect that. We looked at six launch partner creators, comparing their last six feed and IGTV videos older than a week and less than six months old, or fewer videos if that’s all they’d posted.
Only one of the six, BabyAriel, saw an obvious growth trend in her IGTV videos. Her candid IGTV monologues are performing the best of the six compared to feed. She’s earning an average of 243,000 views per IGTV video, about a third as many as she gets on her feed videos. “I’m really happy with my view counts because IGTV is just starting” BabyAriel tells me. She thinks the format will be good for behind-the-scenes clips that complement her longer YouTube videos and shorter Stories. “When I record anything, It’s vertical. When I turn my phone horizontal I think of an hour-long movie.”
Lele Pons, a Latin American comedy and music star who’s one of the most popular Instagram celebrities, gets about 5.7X more feed views than on her IGTV cooking show that averages 1.9 million hits. Instagram posted some IGTV highlights from the first month, but the most popular of now has 4.3 million views — less than half of what Pons gets on her average feed video.
Fitness guides from Katie Austin averaged just 3,600 views on IGTV while she gets 7.5X more in the feed. Lauren Godwin’s colorful comedy fared 5.2X better in the feed. Bryce Xavier saw the biggest differential, earning 15.9X more views for his dance and culture videos. And in the most direct comparison, K-Pop dancer Susie Shu sometimes posts cuts from the same performance to the two destinations, like one that got 273,000 views in feed but just 27,000 on IGTV, with similar clips fairing an average of 7.8X better.
Again, this isn’t to say IGTV is a lame horse. It just isn’t roaring out of the gates. Systrom remains optimistic about inventing a new format. “The question is can we pull that off and the early signs are really good,” he tells me. “We’ve been pretty blown away by the reception and the usage upfront,” though he declined to share any specific statistics. Instagram promised to provide more insight into traction in the future.
YouTube star Casey Neistat is less bullish. He doesn’t think IGTV is working and that engagement has been weak. If IGTV views were surpassing those of YouTube, creators would flock to it, but so far view counts are uninspiring and not worth diverting creative attention, Neistat says. “YouTube offers the best sit-back consumption, and Stories offers active consumption. Where does IGTV fit in? I’m not sure” he tells me. “Why create all of this unique content if it gets lower views, it’s not monetizable, and the viewers aren’t there?”
Susie Shu averages 7.8X more video views in the Instagram feed than on IGTV
For now, the combination of an unfamiliar format, the absence of direction for how to use it and the relatively buried placement has likely tempered IGTV’s traction. Two months in, Instagram Stories was proving itself an existential threat to Snapchat — which it’s in fact become. IGTV doesn’t pose the same danger to YouTube yet, and it will need a strategy to support a more slow-burn trajectory.
The chicken and the IG problem
The first step to becoming a real YouTube challenger is to build up some tent-pole content that gives people a reason to open IGTV. Until there’s something that captures attention, any cross-promotion traffic Instagram sends it will be like pouring water into a bucket with a giant hole in the bottom. Yet until there’s enough viewers, it’s tough to persuade creators to shoot for IGTV since it won’t do a ton to boost their fan base.
Fortnite champion Ninja shares a photo of IGTV launch partners gathered backstage at the press event
Meanwhile, Instagram hasn’t committed to a monetization or revenue-sharing strategy for IGTV. Systrom said at the launch that “There’s no ads in IGTV today,” but noted it’s “obviously a very reasonable place [for ads] to end up.” Without enough views, though, ads won’t earn enough for a revenue split to incentivize creators. Perhaps Instagram will heavily integrate its in-app shopping features and sponsored content partnerships, but even those rely on having more traffic. Vine withered at Twitter in part from creators bailing due to its omission of native monetization options.
So how does IGTV solve the chicken-and-egg problem? It may need to swallow its pride and pay early adopters directly for content until it racks up enough views to offer sustainable revenue sharing. Instagram has never publicly copped to paying for content before, unlike its parent Facebook, which offered stipends ranging into the millions of dollars for publishers to shoot Live broadcasts and long-form Watch shows. Neither have led to a booming viewership, but perhaps that’s because Facebook has lost its edge with the teens who love video.
Instagram could do better if it paid the right creators to weather IGTV’s initial slim pickings. Settling on ad strategy creators can count on earning money from in the future might also get them to hang tight. Those deals could mimic the 55 percent split of mid-roll ad breaks Facebook gives creators on some videos. But again, the views must come first.
Alternatively, or additionally, it could double down on the launch strategy of luring creators with the potential to become the big fish in IGTV’s small-for-now pond. Backroom deals to trade being highlighted in its IGTV algorithm in exchange for high-quality content could win the hearts of these stars and their managers. Instagram would be wise to pair these incentives with vertical long-form video content creation workshops. It could bring its community, product and analytics leaders together with partnered stars to suss out what works best in the format and help them shoot it.
The cross-promo spigot
Once there’s something worth watching on IGTV, the company could open the cross-promo traffic spigot. At first, Instagram would send notifications about top content or IGTV posts from people you follow, and call them out with a little orange text banner atop its main app. Now it seems to understand it will need to be more coercive.
Last month, TechCrunch tipster Jane Manchun Wong spotted Instagram showing promos for individual IGTV shows in the middle of the feed, hoping to redirect eyeballs there. And today, TechCrunch researcher Matt Navarra found Instagram getting more aggressive by putting a bigger call out featuring a relevant IGTV clip with preview image above your Stories tray on the home screen. It may need to boost the frequency of these cross-promotions and stick them in-between Stories and Explore sections as well to give IGTV the limelight. These could expose users to creators they don’t follow already but might enjoy.
“It’s still early but I do think there’s a lot of potential when they figure out two things since the feature is so new,” says John Shahidi, who runs the Justin Bieber-backed Shots Studios, which produces and distributes content for Lele Pons, Rudy Mancuso and other Insta celebs. “1. Product. IGTV is not in your face so Instagram users aren’t changing behavior to consume. Timeline and Instagram Stories are in your face so those two are the most used features. 2. Discoverability. I want to see videos from people I don’t follow. Interesting stuff like cooking, product review, interesting content from brands but without following the accounts.” In the meantime, Shots Studios is launching a vertical-only channel on YouTube that Shahidi believes is the first of its kind.
Instagram will have to balance its strategic imperative to grow the long-form video hub and avoid spamming users until they hate the brand as a whole. Some think it’s already gone too far. “I think it’s super intrusive right now,” says Tiffany Zhong, once known as the world’s youngest venture capitalist who now runs Generation Z consulting firm Zebra Intelligence. “I personally find all the IGTV videos super boring and click out within seconds (and the only time I watch them are if I accidentally tapped on the icon when I tried to go to my DMs instead).” Desperately funneling traffic to the feature before there’s enough great content to power relevant recommendations for everyone could prematurely sour users on IGTV.
Systrom remains optimistic he can iterate his way to success. “What I want to see over the next six to 12 months is a consistent drumbeat of new features that both consumers and creators are asking for, and to look at the retention curve and say ‘are people continuing to watch? Are people continuing to upload?,’” says Systrom. “So far we are seeing that all of those are healthy. But again trying to judge a very new kind of audacious format that’s never really been done before in the first months is going to be really hard.”
Differentiator or deterrent?
The biggest question remains whether IGTV will remain devout to the orthodoxy of vertical-only. Loosening up to accept landscape videos too might nullify a differentiator, but also pipe in a flood of content it could then algorithmically curate to bootstrap IGTV’s library. Reducing the friction by allowing people to easily port content to or from elsewhere might make it feel like less of a gamble for creators deciding where to put their production resources. Instagram itself expanded from square-only to portrait and landscape photos in the feed in 2015.
“My advice would be to make the videos horizontal. We’ve all come to understand vertical as ‘short form’ and horizontal as ‘long form,’” says Sayman. “It’s in the act of rotating your phone to landscape that you indicate to yourself and to your mobile device that you will not be context switching for the next few minutes, but rather intend to focus on one piece of content for an extended period of time.” This would at least give users more to watch, even if they ended up viewing landscape videos with their phones in portrait orientation.
This might be best as a last-ditch effort if it can’t get enough content flowing in through other means. But at least Instagram should offer a cropping tool that lets users manually select what vertical slice of a landscape video they want to show as they watch, rather than just grabbing the center or picking one area on the side for the whole clip. This could let creators repurpose landscape videos without things getting awkwardly half cut out of frame.
Former Facebook employee and social investor Josh Elman, who now works at Robinhood, told me he’s confident the company will experiment as much as necessary. “I think Facebook is relentless. They know that a ton of consumers watch video online. And most discover videos through influencers or their friends. (Or Netflix). Even though Watch and IGTV haven’t taken the world by storm yet, I bet Facebook won’t stop until they find the right mix.”
There’s a goldmine waiting if it does. Unlike on Facebook, there’s no Regram feature, you can’t post links, and outside of Explore you just see who you already follow on Instagram. That’s made it great at delivering friendly video and clips from your favorite stars, but leaves a gaping hole where serendipitous viewing could be. IGTV fills that gap. The hours people spend on Facebook watching random videos and their accompanying commercials have lifted the company to over $13 billion in revenue per quarter. Giving a younger audience a bottomless pit of full-screen video could produce the same behavior and profits on Instagram without polluting the feed, which can remain the purest manifestation of visual feed culture. But that’s only if IGTV can get enough content uploaded.
Puffed up by the success of besting its foe Snapchat, Instagram assumed it could take the long-form video world by storm. But the grand entrance at its debutante ball didn’t draw enough attention. Now it needs to take a different tack. Tone down the cross-promo for the moment. Concentrate on teaching creators how to find what works on the format and incentivizing them with cash and traffic. Develop some must-see IGTV and stoke a viral blockbuster. Prove the gravity of extended, personality-driven vertical video. Only then should it redirect traffic there from the feed, Stories, and Explore.
YouTube’s library wasn’t built overnight, and neither will IGTV’s. Facebook’s deep pockets and the success of Instagram’s other features give it the runway necessary to let IGTV take off. With 1 billion monthly users, and 400 million daily Stories users gathered in just two years, there are plenty of eyeballs waiting to be seduced. Systrom concludes, “Everything that is great starts small.” IGTV’s destiny will depend on Instagram’s patience.
