#Neo-Sweden

Aside from Allenby Beardsley, I believe that the only other character from Neo-Sweden that is named in G Gundam is "Dr. Belliman", the reluctant inventor of the Berzerker System in the Nobel Gundam. As I've noted previously, "Allenby Beardsley" is a rather strange and non-Swedish sounding name. I was having similar thoughts about "Belliman", but the other day I tried sounding it out, and realized something:

Is it actually supposed to be "Bergman"? As in Ingmar Bergman, the world-famous Swedish film director? In-universe, I could headcanon it as some kind of linguistic drift (similar to @thedragonchilde's theory about "Chibodee Crocket"). But I'm also wondering if, in real life, "Belliman" might actually be a mistranslation? Is "Belliman" how Japanese people pronounce "Bergman", and was the intent that the character should be named "Dr. Bergman"? I mean, Ingmar Bergman is probably one of the most famous Swedes internationally, so it doesn't seem unlikely that if a non-Swede were to pick a Swedish name, they would choose that one.

Also, I think that Dr. Belliman might actually look a little like Ingmar Bergman. Could that have been intentional?

So, today I learned that "Neo Sweden" is a thing in Gundam, and I also learned they have their own Gundams. The... Nobel Gundams.

While I will always be disappointed that we never got to see what the Neo-Sweden space colony (or even Neo-Sweden on Earth) looked like in G Gundam, we did at least get a very brief look at "The Neo-Sweden base" launching rockets for the Gundams on Earth to reach space in one of the last episodes:

My headcanon is that this base is an extremely expanded version of the real rocket launch facility Esrange, in northern Sweden. Presumably, in the Future Century, it's expanded from a test facility for weather balloons and suborbital rockets into an actual "spaceport".

To get slightly more serious for a moment, it's worth noting that such an expansion would probably be made by exploiting land surrounding the current-day Esrange facility, land belonging to the Sámi people, destroying their traditional reindeer-herding grounds to build launchpads and whatnot. But hey, if Neo-Sweden are fine with turning a 17-year-old orphan girl into a mindless berserker, I wouldn't put it past them to have no problems with screwing over an indigenous population. It's not like current-day Sweden hasn't already done that in numerous ways.

Well, right now I'm watching G Gundam, so... I guess I'd be a mech pilot in the Great Gundam Fight?

I would probably be one of the jobbers that only shows up in one episode to have my mech knocked out by the main character to show off of cool he is (Arachno Gundam, we hardly knew ye). But hey, if I get to pilot a goofy-looking robot before then, I'm happy!

And I do think that I could look pretty good in those skin-tight latex pilot suits.

"Secrets of Life"PLATITUDE

僕、ネオクラシカルってよく分からん（笑）。にも拘わらずここ数年この手を良く聞くようになったのは、元よりゲーム音楽に憧憬がありメタルにそれの生バンド版みたいな像を求めているのと、これまでそれを求めてきたメロディックパワーメタル系に何か限界を感じ始めたから。そこで、イースの古代祐三さんとかも最初はイングウェイ影響下だったしなぁという流れで、ネオクラシカルに目を向け始めたという��だ。ゲーム音楽からの興味だから、ARTENSIONみたいにシンセが前面に出てる奴ばかり興味が向く。ギターにはあまり興味がない。とはいえせっかくなので、本家イングウェイも徐々に聴いていこうとしてますけどね。さっきRising ForceのSHM-CD注文しましたわ。

このスウェーデンのPlatitudeも、ギターよりキーボードのほうが前面にでているネオクラシカル系ということで興味が向いた一枚だ。いやーカッコいい。以上。だってこの手の素人なんでなにか語れるボキャブラリーはありませんよ。ただこの手の音としては、かなりシンプルにまとまっているのが、どっちかというと気になったかな。これはやはりギターが一歩後ろに譲っている影響なのか���何にせよ良く聴いとるよ。
