It's not as clear cut as liking one or the other. It really depends when writing what feel you want to give your book.

Like, okay, let's say for example you are not writing about now, but are writing cyberpunk fiction. One way to really drive in the feel of the world being in an ultra-capitalistic hellscape is to give (not real, not currently existing, we'll get there) brands to everything. Nobody wears a jacket, you character wears his “LuxMax™ premium Tiger series jacket”. Doesn't shoot a gun, shoots a “NeonTech Fx37 sharpshooter model Y” or whatever. You focus on the brand because the world does, and by that the reader feels as if the corporations are so powerful that it is impossible to describe the world without them.

Now, let's return to writing about now. There is the case that your book is written in the now and is doing the same social commentary, because let's be honest, we are living in late stage capitalism already. So you could do it throughout the entire book for the characterisation of the world. However, a much more interesting alternative is to use it to give characterisation to a character.

Because especially if the book is written in first person, someone telling Siri to open Twitter and post about their new Rolex in first person will immediately make you make so many assumptions by that person. Imagine in two different points of the book two identical sequences, one talking with brands, the other not. Both in first person. Don't you have different feelings towards these characters?

But characterisation does not necessarily exist only in contrast, contrast just makes it easier for us to recognise it. You will be making the same assumptions about a character without the contrast. So as a conscious choice from the author inclusion of brands can be used to contextualise the world or the character.

And it's not like you can't tell what it is in 15 years, people wrote books like that ages ago and we still read them, and after all you could tell what the examples in the cyberpunk example meant without those brands even existing

Now, I do however agree that if not used deliberately for a specific reason like this, then you're probably better off without them

Reading a book now that in the same few paragraphs mentioned Siri, google maps, and another app all at once, and I was kind of overwhelmed by how specific that is—to Apple, to right now, etc. I got bogged down in wondering if that section would be legible in 15 years, like if Siri goes away or is renamed or no one uses Apple phones.

What are your thoughts on books including specific app or brand names, which might end up dating it (like all books with “twitter” in them are now Pre 2024 books)?
