Life update -
Hi, sorry for being MIA for a while and I'll try to update here more frequently. Here's a general update of what I've been up to.
Changed my Tumblr name from studywithmeblr to raptorstudiesstuff. Changed my blog name as well. I don't feel comfortable putting my real name on my social media platforms so I'm going by 'Raptor' now.
💻 Finished the Machine Learning-2 and Unsupervised Learning module along with projects. Got a pretty good grade in both of them and my overall grade went up a bit.
📝 Started applying for data science internships and jobs but got rejected from most of the companies I applied to... 😬
I'll start applying again in a week or two with a new resume. Let me know any tips I can use to not get rejected. 😅
💻 Started SQL last week and really enjoying it. I did get a bad grade on an assignment though. Hope I can make up for it in the final quiz. 🤞
🏥 Work has been alright. We're a little less staffed than usual this week but I'm trying not to stress too much about it.
📖 Currently reading Discworld #1 - The Color of Magic. More than halfway through.
📺 Re-watched the Lord of The Rings movies and now I'm compelled to read the books or rewatch the Hobbit movies.
"There's good in this world, Mr Frodo, and it's worth fighting for." This scene had me in tears and I really needed to hear that..
📺 Watched the first 4 episodes of First Kill on Netflix and I don't know what I was doing to myself. The writing and dialogue is so cheesy and terrible. The acting is okay-ish. It's so bad that it turned out to be quite hilarious. Laughed the whole time.
🎧 Discovered a new (for me) song that I'm obsessed with right now - Mirrors by Justin Timberlake.
📷 Took some really cool pics on my camera..

Might start the 100 days productivity challenge soon as that is the only way I find myself to be consistent.
Peace ✌️
Raptor

Basketball, TV Ratings And The Value Of Numbers-Based Thinking
"From NBA, to television ratings, to social media analytics, how numbers affect decision-making and how to teach this language"
Over the last 4 years or so, while watching any number of NBA games, I have often wondered aloud whether the NBA and basketball as a whole is a better medium though which to teach an appreciation of numbers.
At the heart of this article/post, and the reason for it's writing, is the question of whether the sport of basketball, or sports in general, is more effective at teaching numbers-based decision-making than anything else.
Years ago, the idea of using your phone to place a prop bet, would have seemed liked farfetched nonsense, and yet this is what the combination of time, technology, and the need to share and access information have given us.
youtube
The above video is one of the most important, and most informative videos regarding NBA and the culture of analytics and the video above, sheds light on a massive trend that has taken over the NBA since 2015.
Basketball players as young as 14 are talking about what thier field goal make and miss numbers are, and which part of the court their made shots came from, because the sport by it's nature motivates analytical thinking, and that's important.
This is how the flow of information affects decision-making in real time, or affects strategies and decisions in the long term, and it's the type of thinking that definently translates to other fields.
When a creator takes a look at thier social media analytics, a similar kind of process starts to happen.
If a specific kind of content is getting a better response in the form of impressions, likes, engagement or things like that, then the creator is incentiveized to make more of that content.
What we're talking about extends to areas as broad as diverse as sales, marketing, the concept of supply and demand, and also the type of data that has been relied on for decades by the television industry, and in particualr, advertisers that rely on the television industry.
The above image is a kind of mock image I created from printscreens of the free document that the website allows you to download each month, and my favorite number from the month of October, is the near 3 million people that tuned in to SABC 2 to see the Springboks in the 2023 Rubgy World Cup Final.
On a channel that rarely pulls over 1 million viewers, SABC 2 managed to do this 6 times in the span of October and 4 of those was when the Springboks were playing live.
However, the holy grail of sports television advertising in America, is the Nielsen television ratings, and according to my due dillagence upon typing this article, the NFL is still king of the sports hill, taking more spots in the top 10 than any other major sporting event in the USA, and that's been the trend going back several years.
So even with the recent complaints about the quality of Monday and Thursday night games, the NFL maintains it's dominance as a televisual product, with a Bears-Chargers Sunday night game being the most watched in the month of October.
Streaming numbers are the future as far as advertising dollars and people's attention is concerned, and notably Across The Spider-Verse, Grey's Anatomy and Suits, all top the list for the most streamed shows, as can be seen in the image below.
However that's not my favorite thing about Nielsen's ratings.
If you scroll down through their website, you will notice a different category of information near the bottom, where Nielsen's go the extra step of showing who, or rather which companies, are spending the most on advertising and how much they're spending.
Amazon, Walt Disney, Warner Bros, along with pharmaceutical giants like Novo Nordisk, manufacturing juggernauts like Procter & Gamble and food retailers like Pepsico, are all still, very heavily invested in the television industry and it's advertising power.
This is a level of disclosure that is kind of foreign to South African media, and if I had to guess, is likely a result of US regulatory policies, and I'll keep hunting for the South African equivalent of this, but for now, it is safe to assume that similar types of advertisers are doing the same thing in the South African television industry.
The point of this post, is to discuss new and improved ways of communicating information, and importantly how to teach a new type of information language in a country that will be well served finding ways to cut that learning curve.
Just a thought.

As the age of movies draws to a close, the boys at RLM are happy to have a very large collection of trash films that have been produced and released in the decades past. Films made by weird independent studios, cheapskate con-artists, and legit insane people. Exploitation films, movies with confusing plots, weird filmmaker visions that make no sense, embarrassing performances, terrible films made for the sole purpose so a perverted old man can open-mouth kiss an uncomfortable and disgusted young woman, awful discount and often reused visual FX, and some of the world’s ugliest people. Needless to say, unless you’re Donald Farmer, they don’t make them like they used to. Films today are made by Studios, Netflix, Amazon, etc and undergo a rigorous procedural vetting process. Algorithm compliance, plot beats calculated by computers to maximum engagement statistical sever product farming, actors and actresses that are “comfortable” and “safe” on set (if there is a set). Committees of lawyers, writers, producers and input content analytical engineers who have MBA and degrees from MIT to computer calculate the ultimate streaming product that will provide maximum efficiency for the data and number crunchers to release and stream said products to shareholder satisfaction. Thankfully, time has not eroded away our VHS and DVDs that showcase a magical time when artists took risks. Made a movie based on a singular weird idea that wasn’t tested before a focus group. These movies are real, raw, and disturbing, but often magical. When we pop a tape in or a DVD we never really know what’s going to happen. I’m glad you are all here to join us on this seemingly never-ending adventure into 1s and 0s and magnetic tape stock to discover what humans have created before the dark times. Before the Empire. Also Rich Evans is now wearing a toupee. Now THAT’S embarrassing.

[From GWS.com] JUJUTSU KAISEN is officially the world’s most in-demand animated TV show, taking the title from Attack on Titan which held it since 2020.

According to data-science firm Parrot Analytics, JUJUTSU KAISEN has a global demand rating 71.2 times greater than that of the average TV show.
Parrot Analytics calculates ‘demand’ based on how much attention, engagement, desire, and viewership is expressed by consumers for content.
Their system captures billions of new data points each day, including video consumption (streaming and downloads), social media engagement (hashtags, likes, shares), and research actions (reading about a show on IMDb, for example).
Actions which require more effort on the consumer’s part, such as watching or downloading a show, are weighed more heavily when calculating demand.
Based on Gege Akutami's manga series of the same name, JUJUTSU KAISEN follows the story of high school student Yuji Itadori, who joins a group of Jujutsu Sorcerers to defeat a Curse named Sukuna, of whom Yuji becomes the host.
The anime fought off close competitors One Piece and Attack on Titan to claim the top spot in 2023’s rankings.
One Piece enjoyed a boost in interest due to the release of Netflix’s live-action adaptation, which brought in new fans to the series as well as inspired older fans to rewatch earlier episodes.
Attack on Titan, which concluded its final season in November, remained immensely popular but narrowly lost out this time.
Side note: Congratulations to Akutami sensei and MAPPA animators who made this possible 👏🏼

sorry, question--someone on twitter (a fan of the show) was saying that iwtv flopped on netflix, and someone else was saying that they thought you had showed that the show did well in the netflix 10-20 for a while or has majorly boosted engagement or drove subscriptions to amc to watch season 2, something that showed that it did well even if it wasn't in the top 10 (which makes sense that there has to be other options in the space between "top 10 hit" and "flop"...being in the top 10 on netflix for three weeks can't be the difference between success and failure, and I certainly noticed way more engagement with iwtv on twitter when it started on netflix. And it's interesting that a number of these iwtv mentions and articles mention that the show has become a hit this year, however they're defining that). Anyway, I was wondering if you remember what you said about those numbers or if you could repost that post? I'd be very interested.
Hi! Oh, why won’t IWTVtwt die 😆 Every time I hear that people are talking about something I posted on twt it’s like a jumpscare! 🤣
But yes, I posted on Bluesky about some data from Netflix, from an analytics company called Ampere. It showed that IWTV is one of AMC’s most popular shows - even though it never made the Netflix Top Ten. Rather other significantly less popular shows that IWTV got a big spike from Netflix (why they showed up in the Top Ten). But IWTV was consistently one of the Top 5 most popular AMC shows from July (pre-Netflix run) through September 2024.

bad cook boring conversation awful sets RAGE BAIT! by u/ShinySerialSuccubus
bad cook, boring conversation, awful sets… RAGE BAIT! after seeing clips of TOW and her execrable new “reset”, i’ve convinced myself she’s absolutely trolling us.i hate-watched the trailer, downvoted it, and left a nasty comment. an enormous amount of engagement for netflix’s data analytics! i think i’m playing right into her hands - i’ve seen all the weird ig posts, albeit not on ig, but on jen’s yt channel. but i’ve seen them, and although i didn’t comment or view her offal offering on ig, i ‘talked’ about them all over the place - here, youtube, tiktok, even my mama and one of my sisters!i’m convinced it’s no coincidence. she’s been shamed for her giant man pants since she was in the UK, and what does she wear in at least one episode? as ever, belted right under her boobs. she’s been flogged for the ridiculous amount of mass market jewelry she piles on one arm, and how’s her jewelry load on wlm? as ever, tacky. she’s definitely been notified of the grossness of her slut strands and long extensions hanging everywhere, and her hairstyles on wlm? as ever, yuck!i could go on, but we’re all familiar with her approach. this is jmo, but i feel like i’m just feeding the troll everywhere except here, and, for all i know, she may have mined us sinners for information!rage bait, indeed. post link: https://ift.tt/0ROFCsl author: ShinySerialSuccubus submitted: March 19, 2025 at 07:37PM via SaintMeghanMarkle on Reddit disclaimer: all views + opinions expressed by the author of this post, as well as any comments and reblogs, are solely the author's own; they do not necessarily reflect the views of the administrator of this Tumblr blog. I think that YouTube was better when only views & likes/dislikes were measured rather than how long people watch through a video in one sitting. This is partially what killed off rick rolling and mostly killed off creativity and long-form content as well as variety on the platform. They measure video analytics a similar way to how Netflix measures if a show deserves more seasons or not, how much of the entire season (or in this case, video) was watched in one sitting within those 24-48 initial release hours. Absolute worse content analytics change to be normalized on the internet.
I also miss when liked videos didn’t have a cap on how many likes you could have, but I’m not sure if that was always a thing or only a change implemented in recent years to cut back on data storage costs.
#it’s cool to know how much people watched the video#but it shouldn’t be used in an algorithm that’s supposedly claims to promote creativity#watch time is based on when you open a video and close out of that session#it’s not based on if you come back and watch more of it#it’s based on pet session which leaves long-form content being never recommended to anyone unless you’re a youtuber household name#per session*#it’s cool to know for yourself but the fact that it’s used to not show people certain videos is atrocious#Netflix is even worse about it because if they don’t want you succeeding they’ll choose whether or not to advertise your stuff on other#platforms#there is by no means ANY job security for creators these days if you can argue that there ever was#it’s just only gotten worse is the thing#the YouTube likes thing just always makes me weirded out like I swear I left a like on that video wtf is going on google?? hello??#mine#op#youtubers#YouTube#content creator#content creation#content creators

Exploring the World of Data Analytics: Opportunities and Beyond
Describe data analytics. Analyzing data to find useful information, patterns, and trends is known as data analytics. Businesses adore it since it aids in their improvement. It’s similar to solving problems with data.
Why is data analysis so crucial? Consider yourself in possession of a treasure map (data) and the desire to locate the treasure (insights). Your compass is data analytics.
