some rumil doodles in response to @whimsicallywiddershins who asked: Oh my god I love your art!!! I'm curious about Rumil. I've never really heard of him and I'm curious about what happened to his eyes....

thank you for the ask!!!! im real happy to hear you like my art, and even happier you took the time to ask about rumil! <333 it took me until your ask to realise that, despite him frequently appearing in group concept sketches n doodles, i've never really elaborated on him haha 😅 i tried to illustrate and summarise some of the key points in the art, but more detailed yap incoming under the cut!

so! to start off, my version of rumil is pretty much at his core the same as canon rumil wherein he's a noldorin sage/scholar responsible for inventing the Sarati and later going on to write the Annals of Valinor. his whole being captured and enslaved in angband for a while comes from the other version of him the Book of Lost Tales, where he was a slave of Melko who learned the speech of monsters and goblins --essentially i thought it'd be fun to combine the two to give him a more complicated backstory ^^

in response to your query about his eyes, i hc that during his time in angband he was one of those who were experimented on by Sauron - acting on Morgoth's orders - during the initial testings for the evolution of elves -> orcs. (maybe sauron thought that blinding the first elf-orcs would make them more unlikely to disobey orders/easier to control? hmm) his band of captives were able to break him out in time and they fled back to safety before he was too far-gone, thus allowing him to reunite with finwe, miriel and co, and then eventually follow Orome to valinor :D

him being miriel's dad was also something i felt would be fun to explore, especially because i thought his ties to Sarati and Feanor would be an interesting dynamic! it's very very much noncanon, and incredibly self-indulgent on my part (im so sorry... 😭), but i like to go on tangents abt their relationship! i think rumil wouldve made attempts to dote on feanor and encourage his linguistic pursuits, but would have been held back a lot on truly being around him by both his health and his lingering guilt about miriel. he is incredibly proud when feanor refines his abandoned Sarati concepts and turns Tengwar into a near-universal system of writing however :D

other thoughts on rumil... hmm... i think he's kind of pitiful tbh. something about him being an absent (albeit not of his own volition) father to miriel, and then in turn him feeling unfit to offer feanor as much emotional support as would be ideal, is a theme i would like to keep exploring (^3^) adding on to the fact that he outlives his wife, daughter, son-in-law, grandson, and like 6/7 of his great-grandsons while miraculously not Fading himself gives him an essence with parallels to maglor that i do appreciate...

major apologies for going off on such a rambly tangent, but i do suppose an explanation on my rumil has been overdue for a few years!! i hope i havent misled anyone since i first drew him in that family tree, but thank you so much again for taking the time to ask about him! im always grateful for the interest in my absurd headcanons, and i hope you have a wonderful weekend ahead!!! ❤️

Sort of feels like the writer’s strike gave the team a lot to ruminate on and a lot of pivots came out of that. Want to be clear: I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. It bums me out that we’ve lost characters and actors I adore, but that was always going to be this kind of show. And they’ve proven they were willing to let the narrative breathe from the start: that’s why we had Laura Lee so long, it’s why Adam wasn’t Javi, it’s why Van got to grow up. I love that. I love writers that don’t get so cemented in their initial plan that they can’t evolve.

Where I do get a little finicky is everyone insisting it’s a “trade” for Swank, or that “a background character did this!” Melissa’s been getting fleshed out all season. You think that was an accident? Shauna’s paranoid murder of one lover looked crazy in season one, but now we’re in season three and we find out this is a pattern. Paranoia. Hard-and-fast ill-advised love affairs that turn vicious. Building her own enemy out of an innocent. Adam truly couldn’t see it coming, but Melissa gets decades to dwell. Melissa, who was introduced as someone who thought cannibalism wouldn’t be the worst thing. Melissa, who stood at Shauna’s back until it proved bad for her specifically. Shauna’s always been the heart of the story, the teammate whose eyes we stare through. Of course it’ll all come down to her. And of course she needs someone to go head to head with. She thinks she’s only haunted by Jackie, so obsessed with this ghost that she forgot (well, I guess didn’t realize, due to Faked Suicide) she fully crafted a very-alive haunting of her narrative. You don’t escape the awful shit you’ve done. It will follow you. That’s the whole point of this character. Do I want her instead of Van? Obviously not. But for this story of never forgiving, of carrying your sins home and being eaten alive by them? Yeah, I get it.

I've been thinking more about a Jayce joins the commune but the commune is just weird, not evil, AU and it gets funnier every time.

In this universe, pretty much all the adults are super into Viktor (save for the ones who could care less about the romantic/sexual drama of it all, they just want to grow their peaches and get healthcare) and are downright pissed Jayce came in and was like. Yeah sorry. I stole y'all's man. Oops! (He isn't sorry)

Salo is the number 1 Jayce hater. He'd been trying (and failing) to get into Viktor's pants for years, even before Jayce came on the scene with Hextech, and when he thought he finally had a chance he came back even hotter and clingier than ever and Viktor ate it up.

Huck, second in command (third or fourth depending on what they think of Sky and Jayce's role in the commune) is so tired. He finally has purpose and everyone is infighting about the Herald's man. He's trying to keep them on track. (It's not working lmao).

EVERYONE knows when Vik and Jayce are getting it on. Not because Viktor tells them via mind-hive, but because his presence is suddenly gone. Salo gets even angrier.

Vander, resident sane wolf-man, is very unamused by all this. He has to deal with being a wolf, he shouldn't have to deal with the fact his neighbors want to bone the landlord and can't cause the smelly man with a beard and giant butterfly hammer is.

It's even worse that Jayce is good at everything. He sketches photos of the Herald that even their best artist is jealous of. He helps grow the plants in the greenhouse. Jayce sets up trades with the firelights. Jayce gets to touch the herald and no one else can.

Viktor is doing Yoga outside his home and sometimes people stop and watch, only for Jayce to come back from an early blacksmithing job and start yoga with Viktor, blocking their view. Did he do it on purpose? They don't know. (He did).

They're also so confused because he's the one member (besides the pink-haired girl and her blue-haired sisters who visit and chill with Vander) who isn't a part of their hivemind.

Also in my mind, he and Jayce are equals here. Jayce is in charge of defense and casual activities, blacksmithing, Viktor is the healer and ya know. deity. But they work best as partners and now everyone has to deal with the fact the guy they all hate for taking their herald is also in charge, in a way.

(He teaches them better was to make homes in the blacksmithing area and theyre all mad cause he's right)
