Context: my rabbi was telling a story in our judaism and hebrew class about going to israel and a funny thing that happened with transliterating english into hebrew (we were learning alef)
Rabbi: So I was in front of this store reading the sign and spelling it out to myself *points to ס ו פּ on our alef chart* and I couldn't figure out what-
Me, obliviously interrupting: oh it was a supermarket???
Rabbi, amused: ........yeah, it was a supermarket, you'd do well in israel

I've thought about how gentile Abrahamic religions are antisemitic religious colonialism before and it pisses me off a ton and I'm thankful you said it, but now that it's someone besides me saying it, I'm gonna give some criticism (please don't take this personally)
Everything up to Abraham (particularly Adam and Noah) have G-d creating and tending to the entirety of humanity, right?
During Abraham's time, it should stand for something that G-d tends to Hagar and Ishmael, right? Especially since Hagar gives her own name for G-d and He makes a promise to Ishmael that he'll be the father of nations (or something like that). And I think the Prophet Muhammad is supposed to be descended from Ishmael.
And Noahides are a whole Thing in all this too ofc.
But the bigger thing is there are definitely texts and interpretations that take G-d being the G-d of the Hebrews and extend it to Henotheism, but for the Jews who are purely monotheists and say there is truly only one G-d in existence and He belongs only to us, isn't it cruel to totally deny the vast majority of humanity the Divine, especially if He is still their Creator and controls the world(s) they live in?
this whole thing is coming from the assumption that judaism was always monotheistic. it wasn’t. at one point in time we were monolatrous, meaning we only worshipped one g-d but didn’t deny the existence of others. hell, the language used in the torah supports this (the way the text treats egypt’s g-ds being perhaps the most prominent example). hashem has always been our specific g-d, since before the idea emerged that he is the only g-d. our/the world’s perception of him may have since evolved into this idea of one singular deity, but it has not always been that way.
hagar and ishmael still come from our mythology surrounding our particular g-d. the idea then emerged in islam, which was born with the same jewish roots that christianity was, that muslims were descended from ishmael. and, like, i don’t really mind or care about that either way. ishmael’s not a super major figure in our folklore. the story, along others in breishit, genuinely does lend itself to the idea that hashem can be the guardian of many different peoples, families, and nations. and to tell the truth i don’t genuinely have much of a problem with sharing some folklore and roots.
but it NEEDS to be acknowledged where those roots come from. for so much of history, right up until today, christians and muslims have pretended they know our g-d and our folklore and our history better than we do. they have MURDERED us for worshipping our g-d and practicing our customs in OUR way, the way we have been since before their religions and cultures emerged. if the religions that find their roots in our culture were more willing to listen to us, respect us, and learn from us, maybe i’d be less angry. but they’re not. they’ve tried and tried and tried to eradicate us and erase where they came from and make our stuff theirs. i don’t think it has to be like that forever but i don’t think we’re very close to it not being like that as of now.
also, i can’t think of a single cultural mythology that doesn’t have a creation story of some kind. it’s just the kind of thing that societies do when they try to make sense of their place in the grand scheme. the fact that we believe our g-d created the entire world does not actually mean that that story or that g-d belongs to the entire world. the fact that everybody thinks our creation myth applies to and belongs to them is just more evidence of how widely our culture has been co-opted.
there’s nothing we can do to change the fact that our g-d has been made universal (either through the natural evolution of our theology or from colonialism and cultural theft, more likely a combination of both) and i have to be fine with that. sure, fine, the people who have adopted our g-d as their own without actually bothering to understand us at all can outnumber us by orders of magnitude.
but why does our holy city have to also be their holy city? the christians have the vatican and rome and islam has mecca and medina. why do they need jerusalem? why can’t even that just be ours?
again, i have to push this aside and be okay with sharing if i truly want to have peace in our land. and i do, because i love eretz yisrael and yerushalayim more than i hate what has been done to her. the situation has grown so far beyond the injustices i am angry about that it is impossible to right those injustices without creating brand new ones. so i will be okay with sharing our g-d, our texts, and our land. but that doesn’t mean the injustice of it won’t burn like a fire in my heart.

Hey, looking into converting, where do i start? Ive been reading up on a lot of sources, trying to get my hands on a Torah, and read up on the Mitzvot. I cant go to a synagogue yet as my family is Christian and would probably just give me even worse treatment then i already go through in my home. Help?? Thanks in advance
There's a lot more to Judaism than Torah and mitzvot, and conversion is not possible if you can't go to a synagogue. I sympathize with you having a difficult family, however keeping peace in the home is important, and you're unlikely to find a rabbi willing to convert you if you will face poor treatment at home. I can almost guarantee they would tell you that because conversion is not necessary (as we don't believe that you have to be Jewish in order to gain salvation, as other religions would) you could just be a pious gentile that follows the 7 Noahide laws.
My suggestion is to wait until you can be out of the house and on your own before beginning to convert. Conversion is a very long and difficult process if done properly, and once you convert it's not as if you can just decide one day to deconvert and stop being Jewish. It's a lifelong commitment, and not a decision to be made so young. It's only in specific circumstances that a rabbi would be willing to convert a minor, and it's certainly not when they have antisemitic parents. Judaism will still be here when you move out in a few years, so it won't hurt to wait.

Although incest is forbidden due to my religion, I do not believe it is inherently morally wrong.
I do not believe that the Noahide Laws are fully binding to gentiles, so incest is permissible, if somewhat frowned upon. I would not encourage my gentile friends to engage in incest, but I try to destigmatize it. My friend recently mentioned how she knew a couple—through family, I think, although I am unsure if they were related to her—who were long-lost cousins and got married later in life. She had often had a negative reaction to the subject of incest, going beyond disgust into moral judgement, but she told this story with a smile.
Please, if there is anyone with a different position, share it with me. I enjoy seeing how Judaism can connect to areas of my life and I feel that there are not many observant Jews in this community (I understand why, of course, but I wish there was someone I could share opinions with).
Thank you so much for sharing your perspective and the story about the cousins your friend knew! It's fascinating to hear you talk about the matter from a position of Judaism.
Regardless of anyone's feelings about the morality of close incest, I hope we can all work towards destigmatizing relationships between cousins. I'm glad to hear your friend was relaxed about it.

Dear God
Please, In the name of Adamide-Noahide faith and in the name of the Adamide-Noahide community,
Restore:  The Christian Church to the land of Israel, as the religion of Christianity emerged from Israel and it is there responsibility to deal with.
Restore:  The circumcised Muslim world to Saudi Arabia, as the religion of Islam emerged from Saudi Arabia, and is based on Abraham's covenant, which land is included in Saudi Arabia, and teach them thoroughly the book of Genes.
Bless the rest of the World - the Kingdom of Noah - with faithful keepers of the Rainbow Torah.
Amen Click here to Reply

10/24/13 Dear God
I pray and humbly ask of thee:  Bless 'Rothera', which is the Capital of the British Antarctic Territory, with a Township growing into a City, over the next number of years.  Bless it with a strong economy, especially one based on Antarctic tours and Hospitaity, but also one based on Intellectual Property matters and IT related industries.  Bless the population and grow it to 10 million very quickly I do ask of thee in the holy name of my father Noah and by your abundant mercy and grace.  And, in honour of this request, I offer you this reading of Psalm 1:
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6 For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
AMEN

10/30/13 Dear God
In the next life, please have produced by Simpson LeMesurier Films, and distributed in DVD format by Umbrella Entertainment, 25 More initial series of 'Snowy', 1 season per year from 1950 (Second Season) to 1974 (26th Season).  The Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme was built from 1949 to 1974, totally 26 years.  So, yes, it was completed in 1974.
Further, if possible, put 'Cyril Daly' into the cast as snowy worker 'Cyril Daly' and have him as a regular at Logan's pub.
Later on, if the demand warrants it, I don't think I would mind if you wanted to do further series with Cyril and the family and other families in the Snowy Region.
I make this request in Adam and Eve and Noah's Name, as a Karaite Adamide-Noahide, as well as in - to a degree - Jesus of Nazareth's name, for many of the cast 'characters' are Christian.
AMEN
Callodyn Quickwinter
10/30/13 As you suggested, 'Snowy Families' focusing on about 3 families, maybe 4, could be a follow up for about 10 seasons.  The Daly family could be one of them.
Callodyn Quickwinter
10/30/13 Dear God
Please process the sanctification of the IBM Aptiva and the HP Computer which I have owned and is now becoming part of my heavenly possessions, so that they may be utilized by my spirit, my family at 29 Merriman Crescent in Heaven, as well as extended family of grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins, as well as the Karaite Adamide-Noahide community and the Adamide-Noahide community in general, for use in the 29 Merriman Crescent 7DF General Library of the Kingdom of Noah.  Please allow the creation of LANs with my computers and cable equipment and, with my rights to the internet, please gradually allow (In proper and legal due process) the Noahide community to access my rights (as Karaite Adamide-Noahide Number One) for their gaining use and purchase rights for my Noahide possessions.
I humbly ask this of you in the Name of My Ancestors:  Adam & Eve, Enoch & Noah.
AMEN
Callodyn Quickwinter
11/1/13 Dear God
I pray
In the days, weeks, months and years ahead, please bring peace, lawfulness and righteousness to Earth and Heaven.  Please rebuke lawlessness and sin, and weed out the wicked, as you do, from generation to generation, keeping faith with mankind. And in honour of this request, I offer you the following psalm:
How blessed are those who reject the advice of the wicked, don’t stand on the way of sinners or sit where scoffers sit! 2 Their delight is in Adonai’s Torah; on his Torah they meditate day and night. 3 They are like trees planted by streams — they bear their fruit in season, their leaves never wither, everything they do succeeds.
4 Not so the wicked, who are like chaff driven by the wind. 5 For this reason the wicked won’t stand up to the judgment, nor will sinners at the gathering of the righteous. 6 For Adonai watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked is doomed.
AMEN

Psalm 33
God Almighty
I should be patient, and not judge so quickly
I should be calmer, and not judge so savagely
I should be prudent, and not judge so rashly
I should be faithful, and not judge so impulsively
God, I apologize for my casual words I have said
God, I apologize for my thoughtless words I have said
God, I apologize for my pridefilled words I have said
God, I apologize for my nasty words I have said
God, I am thinking, perhaps selfishly, on my future
Because I don't want to lose opportunities in the faith
By my thoughtless words
By my lack of patience
By my lack of fidelity
God, I don't want to lose the opportunities you offer
So I need to repent of casual words, casual attitudes, casual mannerisms
But this is not easy
For I can be a passionate man, despite my often passive personality
Lord God, I desire wealth, success and prosperity in life
And it is best to be honest about this
I could wish for the nobility of Solomon
And only ask for virtue in judgement
Yet, my virtue, it must be honesty
For I can not deny my heart's desire for material success
And in my desire for success in life
I can use accusing words of your lack of concern for my material state
And this is not right
So perhaps you shouldn't forgive me
As If someone said I was just trying to use God, what could I really say?
How could I deny the charge that I want great success in life?
I couldn't. I can only tell the truth about that. Its just the way I am, I suppose.
Forgive me for my shortcomings.
Yet, if you will bless me, and If I must pray for this success,
Please allow me to focus my prayers of passion on such success
And forgive me for my shortcomings
For I am only Human
Alleluia
AMEN
Psalm 34
May the Orient come before you Lord God Almighty
May the children of the Far East be in your heart

Psalms of Haven Noahide Fellowship
A Psalm of Daniel
Psalm 1
Yahweh, the Lord, is the Centre of all that is.
He is the Supreme Power, the Omnipotent One,
Full of Glory and Majesty, Eternal in Sovereignty.
Yahweh is gracious to us mere mortals,
Granting us blessings and peace,
Giving prosperity to the works of our hands.
Yahweh watches over those who call on his name.
He watches and blesses those who repent of sin,
And Grants his grace to the humble of heart.
Yahweh is a trustworthy foundation.
Yes, in God himself I place my trust,
Forsaking the strength of my own hands,
Forsaking the strength of men, whose fidelity is fleeting.
A Psalm of Daniel
Psalm 2
How the heart of man can choose a crooked path.
How the heart of man can choose a crooked way.
Oh, heavenly father, that your grace would be upon us all,
Leading us in the right way, leading us against our own evil inclinations.
Yahweh, enthroned in heaven, looks down upon the children of men.
He knows their heart, from their youth he has known them,
Caught up in their evil ways, caught up in their malicious intent.
Oh Yahweh, how great your grace is. Oh Yahweh, how superlative your mercy.
You spoke with our father Noah.
You spoke with him and called him out of a perverse generation.
For mankind was wicked in your eyes, evil from the days of their youth.
And through Noah you rebirthed mankind, saved from the deluge of the flood.
Majestic Lord of Glory, redeem me I pray.
Hear my prayer and rescue me from the darkness of my own heart.
For only in thy goodness can the gift of eternal life be realized.
Only in thy goodness can the gift of forever have hope.
A Psalm of Daniel
Psalm 3
God
Can we not be so hypocritical, unfair and double-minded
Can we not be so duplicitous, fork-tongued and unfaithful
Can we not pretend to be paragons of virtue yet find shame in our hearts
Shame at betraying ones we claim to love
Lord
Let not my boasts be great, of words I can not live up to
Let me not say of my virtues qualities which I later betray as lacking
Let me be truthful in how much I can truly commit to and foreswear vain oaths
Guide me to be faithful
Father
Show me the way of holiness which will not be questioned as shallow
Help me to grow up maturely, yet not reach for heights I later tumble from
Give me grace and mercy and remind others I am only human, not God himself
Forgive me for my shortcomings
Yahweh
I am only human. I can not be more than what I am. And I am so complex
That I don’t even understand myself half of the time.
But you, Oh Lord, know all the ways of humans and the choices of the heart.
Please, if you will in your mercy answer my prayer, give me the gift of wisdom
To love others in a manner which will last eternally and not be a vain oath of
Allegiance soon forgotten.
Alleluia
A Psalm of Daniel
Psalm 4
Let my soul rest in the calmness of nature,
the calmness of God’s creation.
Let my soul slumber and be at peace with the
simplicity of the song of the songbird
and the chirping of the sparrow.
Let the buzzing of the bees bring joy to me,
even to the days of my age and let
the sound of the sheep at pasture and the joy of the
newborn babe be always pleasant in my heart.
Let the sight of a spider’s web fill me with mystery,
and let the early morning mist always fill me with
happiness and aliven me to the new day.
Let the rushing geyser be a source of fascination,
and let me fear in the presence of the tornado and
be awestruck by the power of the lightning.
Let the gentle flow of the stream soothe my soul,
and let the thunderous waves entertain my thirst
for adventure.
Lord God Almighty, I thank you for the wonders
of creation, which give joy and happiness to my
life each and every day. This world is a wonderful
and marvellous world, and all the children of Noah
thank you for your great kindness in creating it
For us.
We are your people, Almighty God, and the servants
of your covenant. And let the sign of the Covenant,
the ‘Rainbow’, one of the greatest signs of nature,
always remind us of the beauty and wonder that comes
forth from the heart of the Almighty.
Alleluia
A Psalm of Daniel
Psalm 5
Lord God - You are the solace of my heart’s anxiety.
You are the peace in the storms of life which remains
Faithful and ever unchanging. You are the strength
In my weaknesses and the power of my right hand
In all that I say and do. Lord, you are God, and even
In my wrongdoing my heart still remembers the graces
And love you have shown me.
Lord God – From generation to generation mankind
Searches out the way of truth. For so many finding
God is not easy, but you have always been there, waiting
To be found. You love us, children of Adam and Eve,
Children of Enoch, children of Noah. You love us and
Teach us the right way through the teachings of our
Fathers. Lord, I pray, remain faithful to the heart which
Wants truth above all else, and remember the struggle
We have all gone through in finding our salvation.
Lord God – Remember our fathers who have gone before
Us, and our mothers who bore and fed us. Remember forever
Those who have struggled to build our wonderful world, and
The many sacrifices they have made. I pray and ask of you,
Eternal God, prepare a home of eternal joy and life as reward
For their struggle, and share with them the fruits of their
Labours and the joy and consolation their hearts truly desire.
Forget not the children of Noah who, even those who have
Not known you or understood your ways, still tried in their hearts
To live good and decent lives. Forget them not in your mercy
I do pray Lord God Almighty, and prepare a home of eternal
Blessing for each and every one of them.
Lord God – The children of Noah praise your name. We lift
Up the name of Yahweh and declare that he is God and that
There is no other. Heavenly Father, we will serve you for
All eternity, building a Haven of Salvation in your name, a
Haven of love, peace and prosperity, in true service to your
Eternal Glory. We will feed the hungry, nurse the sick and
Wounded, give homes to the homeless, and give peace and
Love to the broken of heart. We will care for all as you have
Cared for us, and we pray watch over us eternally for we are
The sheep of your eternal pasture, the children of mankind,
And we need you in all our weaknesses and all our struggles.
Alleluia

12/15/13 Dear God
Please Bless Amazingly!!!!
Comic clubs worldwide. Have members pool resources, and have central locations for the activity of the club established in ongoing AFFORDABLE rents, and PURCHASES were possible by richer club members.  Have canteens/cantinas, snack machines etc available for these private clubs and keep all members very strict and private about the ongoing affairs and operations of the club and protect greatly from theft and accidents the physical assets of the club, especially the comics. Make these places a den of fantasy and excitement in discussion, presence yourself there, and let comics be read and adored in such clubs.
I pray to you HOLY Elohim that you would greatly answer this prayer request and make an economy out of this prayer request.
AMEN

Every institution prioritizes the continuity of the institution. That is in direct conflict with speaking truth, loving as God loves, and living as the Holy Spirit directs. This is why Jesus never created ANY religion.
We see in the life of Jesus that he followed the Law of Moses, BUT he did not follow rabbinical Judaism. Rabbinical Judaism grew out of the Babylonian captivity. It is a human control system. Religious nannys. Religious Karens. Religious Gestapo.
Historically it seems to have started with many good intentions, but it quickly devolved into knowing dogma ABOUT God INSTEAD of knowing God or having or applying FAITH or knowing God directly. It claims to be a derivative of the Mosaic Law, but one JUST as authoritative as Moses? Really, the black magic in the Babylonian Talmud gets to ECLIPSE the descriptions of love/goodness in action that the Law of Moses describes?
We have a great hijacking and switching away from how God instructed to live and into the hands of professional religious leaders (most of which were Edomites and not even Jews, but that is a different conversation). They would never admit their human systems were at ODDS WITH God's purity and sincerity. That their claim to be religious leaders lacks all credibility in God's eyes. Their supposed authority is fradulent.
But Jesus showed the discrepancy between the two, over and over again.
Rabbinical Judaism set up many structures, rules, traditions and forms that LOOK moral. But it was powerless to put the love of God within any person's heart! Saying to the Pharisees, Jesus stated: "I know you that you do NOT have the love of God in your hearts." (John 5:42)
Jesus IS that love. Jesus is that living connection to Father God, full of grace and obedient faith. Jesus is the law of Moses lived out. He is the demonstration and fulfillment.
BEWARE of religious systems. Of fake spirituality. Of fake goodness. Of moral rules, viciously enforced, without connection to the heart of Father God and Messiah Jesus. They will publicly PLAY A ROLE of goodness and virtue (to their own opportunistic benefit as deceivers), while being enemies of God.
And had the Mosaic Law not been hijacked by covert serpents, even though it does describe that which is truly good, it cannot cultivate goodness itself, righteousness itself.
"For what the Law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. (Romans 8:3-10)
Jesus is the love God is looking for. Jesus is the obedience that God requires for relationship with Himself. Father God FULLY SEES HIMSELF when He looks at Jesus - His only begotten Son.
Jesus is your Way to the Father. Accept no substitutes, no derivatives, no religions. The coming Noahide system is yet another fake goodness CONTROL grid, absent of God and His love. It is thus powerless to make you in right standing when God judges your heart if it is up to His standards for His family and relationship with Himself for eternity.

I'm a prospective convert who grew up very xian. I obviously don't believe in the christian god but I find myself praying as a reflex at times. I haven't gotten to start converting bc of my family situation, but that's the only reason why I haven't. I guess my question is like, how far along should I be in the conversion process before I can consider it praying to the jewish god and not the god I grew up praying to but don't believe in anymore? I don't want to overstep before I get to convert
Mod here. As a perfunctory reminder, anon, your priority right now needs to be staying safe. Judaism has been around for a long time and will be there if/when you seek it out in the future. Respondents with experience with conversion (e.g. conversion students, converted Jews, rabbis or teachers who work with conversion students) are also welcome to share thoughts and recommendations with anon, as anon’s safety permits.
I think that, for the purposes of any “can I do x” boundaries questions, we can define anon as a non-Jew who believes in the Jewish God (some would call them a “Noahide”). Respondents should respond respectfully and thoughtfully within that context.
Much thanks! (Todah rabah!)  !תּוֹדָה רַבָּה

you're post about buck converting was very insightful and i was wondering if you could maybe share what that process looks like?
so, im not sure if you mean about the process in general or about buck specifically - if I guessed wrong feel free to pop back in and tell me!
so, all this is with the caveat that there is a TON of difference between denominations, different synagogues, and even just individual rabbis. No two people will have the same process, or even the same general steps or ""requirements"". Also with the caveat that I am a fairly well-educated jew but I am not a rabbi. For context, I would say my background is conserva-form, or Masortiform (some mix of conservative/Masorti and reform judaism).
an important note here before we begin: jews don't proselytize. it's not a fully closed religion like Zoroastrianism, but we don't recruit, and there is an extensive formal process in Jewish law for transitioning from a non-jew to a jew. We also don't believe that everyone needs to be jewish; if your only frame of reference is christianity, that might seem very weird. there is a very small subset of moral laws called the noahide laws that we think all people should follow, and you don't need to/have to do anything else if you're not a jew. becoming a jew means exponentially increasing your moral/religious obligations!
if one decided that despite all the good arguments against it, they still wanted to formally begin the process, it would start with an expression of interest - most people have done something jewish or gotten at least marginally involved in a jewish community at some point, just kind of poking around. You have to know something to even begin to think you might want to convert, you know? and so at some point you go from a person hanging around a jewish organization to someone who has spoken to a rabbi and is Officially Exploring Judaism.
Now comes the weird part - i know people for whom this section was less than a year, and people for whom this section was a decade+. All you do is learn. that's it! there's no guide for when you've learned enough. You might take an intro to judaism class, you might take other classes about judaism, you might just go to services a lot, you might do Torah study... one thing that's almost guaranteed is that in this period you meet every so often with the rabbi who is guiding you through this process. The key is to integrate into the community and functionally live like you're Jewish before you actually formally become Jewish. between the two of you, you decide when you're ready. Some things a rabbi might want to see at this stage include:
indications that you understand the seriousness/permanence of your decision
a shabbat practice of some kind
a tzedakah (charity) practice of some kind
some form of personal prayer practice
engagement with jewish community
overall acceptable level of factual jewish knowledge and knowledge of jewish theology - if you don't know all the major holidays, or if you don't know what kosher means, if you can't name any mitzvot (commandments, the things you're obligated to do as a jew), those would be bad signs.
some denominations will test you on rules about keeping kosher, which blessings you say when, etc. but that tends to be more orthodox
some consideration of keeping kosher or at least engaging with the moral underpinnings of it
commitment to living a jewish life publicly, including in front of your family
commitment to renouncing any other religion traditions you might have been raised with (this gets fuzzier when it comes to the blurred line between religion and culture; every rabbi will interpret it differently)
most rabbis will also want you to have done one full jewish year cycle, so that you've hit each of the holidays
it all depends, really! but at some point your rabbi is going to say to you "hey I think you're ready". This will often come as part of an ongoing conversation - much like getting engaged, it shouldn't surprise you. At this point, if not before, you'll pick your Hebrew name. [Hebrew names are one to two personal names and then a gendered word for child, and then the names of your parents. Unless they have a good reason not to, converts usually format their names as personal name(s) bat/ben Avraham v'Sara, child of Abraham and Sarah, the first jews.] The Hebrew name-choosing process is deeply personal and also a lot of fun! Some people who were raised jewish never got a Hebrew name, or some folks will add a second personal name after a major life event, so there are a lot of ways to end up picking part or all of your name.
After you and your rabbi agree you're ready, the final step is a beit din - a religious court, but it's not as scary as it sounds - and then immersion in a mikvah, a ritual bath. the beit din is a small group of learned jews (though in modern conversion processes they're almost always rabbis) who talk to you and ask questions about your conversion until they're satisfied. They will ask about many of the things in that bulleted list above. No rabbi ever sends someone to the beit din if they don't personally think they're ready, but I have heard of people being sent back from a beit din, so it's not a guarantee. The vast, VAST majority of people are not sent back, though, and at least in the reform movement, the formal beit din concludes with a series of questions that everyone gets asked, almost as a formality; the rabbi definitely already knows your answers to these. Once that's done, you immerse in the mikvah; some places do these immediately one after the other, but I've heard from people whose beit din was on a different day than their actual immersion.
there is a whole separate post about immersing in a mikvah but basically a rabbi or mikvah guide walks you through it and after you come out of the mikvah is the moment you're officially jewish! mazel tov!
Crucially, at any point in this process before the mikvah, you can back out - no one will be mad. We love people exploring judaism and it's great to learn about even if you ultimately decide you were not meant to join the tribe! However, once you've immersed in the mikvah, it's permanent - there is nothing you can do to "un-jew" yourself. there's a teaching that all of the souls of all jewish people forever were together at Sinai when Moses brought down the ten commandments, which is a beautiful teaching that also embodies a lot of the modern approach to conversion - you were always jewish, it's just that your jewish journey looks different from someone else's!
i hope this was helpful and not just massively confusing 😅

You know, I was thinking about this the other day, and I AM religious. I mean, look.
I’m going to two (zoom) seders this weekend.
I keep kosher, and with a few lapses, have done so my entire life. In fact, between being a vegetarian and not eating kitniyot on Pesach, I keep kosher to a degree that, while well within the minhag I was raised in, people from other minhags would consider fanatical (there was a whole schism over kitniyot!).
I may not be shomer shabbos, but I do remember shabbat and try to refrain from working on Saturdays--and try to discourage my subordinates from working on Saturdays, as well. They shouldn’t violate the Noahide laws (or really, overwork themselves in general) on my account.
It takes very little to get me to free-associate over to talking about the Tanakh.
I study EVERY DAY. I have been studying every day my whole entire life--if you believe my parents, since before I could speak, before I could walk. Not always the law and the commentaries--although sometimes the law and the commentaries--but it’s all relevant. Science, social justice, all of it is relevant to understanding the universe, my place in it, and how to be a good person.
The thing about Judaism is you don’t have to believe in God to be religious. It’s not required. It’s considered a nice bonus if you believe, but as long as you aren’t encouraging others toward atheism (and I would never tell others what to believe about something unfalsifiable) you’re still in good standing. I have family members (on both sides of my family!) who are Orthodox who are atheists; there’s no contradiction.

Judaism 101: Jews and Gentiles
Judaism maintains that the righteous of all nations have a place in the world to come. This has been the majority rule since the days of the Talmud. Judaism generally recognizes that Christians and Muslims worship the same G-d that we do and those who follow the tenets of their religions can be considered righteous in the eyes of G-d.
As a result, unlike Christians who maintain that one must be Christian to get salvation, Jews believe that everyone who follows their religion is righteous. This /can/ also be extended in following the laws of the nations, if someone’s an atheist. Being righteous, no matter to what/whom, is more important than to what you are righteous.
This opinion is not shared by the entirety of the Jewish people. The more you learn about any kind of law or concept in Judaism, the more it is clear that Jewish people are divided on almost everything.
Contrary to popular belief, Judaism does not maintain that Jews are better than other people. Although we refer to ourselves as G-d's chosen people, we do not believe that G-d chose the Jews because of any inherent superiority. According to the Talmud (Avodah Zarah 2b), G-d offered the Torah to all the nations of the earth, and the Jews were the only ones who accepted it.
The story goes on to say that the Jews were offered the Torah last, and accepted it only because G-d held a mountain over their heads! (In Ex. 19:17, the words generally translated as "at the foot of the mountain" literally mean "underneath the mountain"!) Another traditional story suggests that G-d chose the Jewish nation because they were the lowliest of nations, and their success would be attributed to G-d's might rather than their own ability. Clearly, these are not the ideas of a people who think they are better than other nations.
Because of our acceptance of Torah, Jews have a special status in the eyes of G-d, but we lose that special status when we abandon Torah. Furthermore, the blessings that we received from G-d by accepting the Torah come with a high price: Jews have a greater responsibility than non-Jews. While non-Jews are only obligated to obey the seven commandments given to Noah, Jews are responsible for fulfilling the 613 mitzvot (commandments) in the Torah, thus G-d will punish Jews for doing things that would not be a sin for non-Jews.
The Seven Laws of Noah
According to traditional Judaism, G-d gave Noah and his family seven commandments to observe when he saved them from the flood. These commandments, referred to as the Noahic or Noahide commandments, are inferred from Genesis Ch. 9, and are as follows: 1) to establish courts of justice; 2) not to commit blasphemy; 3) not to commit idolatry; 4) not to commit incest and adultery; 5) not to commit bloodshed; 6) not to commit robbery; and 7) not to eat flesh cut from a living animal. These commandments are fairly simple and straightforward, and most of them are recognized by most of the world as sound moral principles. Any non-Jew who follows these laws has a place in the world to come.
The Noahic commandments are binding on all people, because all people are descended from Noah and his family. The 613 mitzvot of the Torah, on the other hand, are only binding on the descendants of those who accepted the commandments at Sinai and upon those who take on the yoke of the commandments voluntarily (by conversion).
In addition, the Noahic commandments are applied more leniently to non-Jews than the corresponding commandments are to Jews, because non-Jews do not have the benefit of Oral Torah to guide them in interpreting the laws. For example, worshipping G-d in the form of a man would constitute idolatry for a Jew; however, according to some sources, the Christian worship of Jesus does not constitute idolatry for non-Jews.
Goyim, Shiksas, Shkutzim
The most commonly used word for a non-Jew is goy. The word "goy" means "nation," and refers to the fact that goyim are members of other nations, that is, nations other than the Children of Israel.
There is nothing inherently insulting about the word "goy." In fact, the Torah occasionally refers to the Jewish people using the term "goy." Most notably, in Exodus 19:6, G-d says that the Children of Israel will be "a kingdom of priests and a holy nation," that is, a goy kadosh. Because Jews have had so many bad experiences with anti-Semitic non-Jews over the centuries, the term "goy" has taken on some negative connotations, but in general the term is no more insulting than the word "gentile."
The more insulting terms for non-Jews are shiksa (feminine) and shkutz (masculine). I gather that these words are derived from the Hebrew root Shin-Qof-Tzadei, meaning loathsome or abomination. The word shiksa is most commonly used to refer to a non-Jewish woman who is dating or married to a Jewish man, which should give some indication of how strongly Jews are opposed to the idea of intermarriage. The term shkutz is most commonly used to refer to an anti-Semitic man. Both terms can be used in a less serious, more joking way, but in general they should be used with caution.
If you are offended to hear that Jewish culture has a negative term for non-Jews, I would recommend that you stop and think about the many negative terms and stereotypes that your culture has for Jews.
The topics of interfaith marriage and conversion will be treated separately for they are highly divisive issues, between Jews from different denominations, or places around the world.

Whose Messiah Can Succeed?
Here is the central problem, as I see it, with traditional Judaism's Messiah as it is unpacked and explained by those exponents of the Jewish tradition who are engaging critically with Christianity.
According to this view, the Messianic Age will be publicly and irrefutably manifested because 1) the Jewish people will be regathered from exile, 2) all nations will confess the one God, and 3) there will be a universal dominion of peace, nations shall cease to make war.
Let's set aside 1) for now, though I think it suffers from similar problems.
Judaism as I understand it affirms the reality of free will. Man has a good and an evil inclination, and it is the duty of man to exercise his will in such a way that is faithful to God and in accordance with the good rather than evil inclination. A traditional Jew who affirms free will in this sense, however, faces a very serious problem when dealing with the concept of the Messiah and Messianic Age. This concept of Messiah presumes that the fundamental problem is one of knowledge. The nations simply do not know that traditional Judaism is the only embodiment of the covenant that the God of Israel made with the people of Israel. Apart from a very small number of Gentiles participating in the Noahide movement (in Judaism all Gentiles are Noahides by birth- “Noahidism” does not existed as a corporate movement with distinct worship and tradition) and converts to Judaism, all the nations have varying degrees of misconceptions about reality. Either they crudely worship idols or they worship God with an inaccurate view of His relationship with mankind.
What the Messiah does is he, through his supernatural work, confirms the faithfulness of God to the Jewish people within the covenantal framework of Orthodox Judaism. Such supernatural confirmation provides empirical verification to the whole world that the Lord alone is God and that Israel- serving God through Torah in its rabbinic interpretation- is His people. The Messiah provides good judgment, resolves conflicts, and brings war and idolatry to a conclusion.
But is this plausible? I believe that this raises serious problems given what we read in the Torah about mankind. In the Torah, we read that Pharaoh continued to harden his heart even as the miraculous provision of God for the Jewish people increased. No matter how self-evident it was, how direct the revelation of God had become, Pharaoh continued in his rebellion. Perhaps one might suggest that this is more complex because of the issue of the hardening or strengthening of Pharaoh’s heart. Let’s set it aside for the sake of argument. What about Israel herself?
When Israel comes to Sinai, she beholds the God of Israel descend in terrifying glory upon the mountain and the basic framework for the Torah covenant is publicly announced. Moses’ prophetic calling is empirically verified in an irrefutable way, thereby affirming that Moses is the divinely anointed messenger through whom Torah is given to all Israel. The covenant is formally sealed and affirmed through representative elders. And yet, within forty days of his ascent, Israel is worshiping a golden calf. There was no shortage of empirical verification. And yet, she rebelled.
Perhaps, one objects, Moses’ absence renders this different than the messianic age, where the manifestation of the Messiah will be unending. Yet, the problem extended even before Sinai. At the Red Sea, after amazing and visible plagues on all Egypt, Israel still mutters that Moses brought them out to die in the wilderness. After the covenant, after the covenant renewal, after Egypt is destroyed and while the glory of God is visibly present to the entire nation from dawn to dusk, Israel still rebels. Israel cries against God and Moses out of fear of the Canaanites- despite having just seen the collapse of Egyptian civilization. Matters as trivial as being bored with food bring Israel to rise up in rage against Moses and God.
This is not a case made uniquely against the Jewish people. Israel in her story does not distinguish herself from the nations: rather, she embodies the psychological and spiritual condition of all nations. Mankind does not rebel or disbelieve because God has hidden Himself. Man may claim such when God hides Himself, but at those moments of visible and plain revelation, mankind still turns up its nose. And so the problem with Judaism’s Messiah is that everything we know about mankind- from the Torah, from the Prophets, from human experience- everything we know tells us that God could write “I am God, I alone am God, please stop the foolishness” in the stars tonight, announcing it in every language directly to all nations, and the next morning we would see scores of people declaring that aliens had finally manifested themselves to the human race and that the reality of God had been refuted by such a discovery. There is a deeper problem in the human condition than mere ignorance, and the Torah bears grave witness to this fact.
Judaism’s Messiah- even if he empirically verified the truth of Judaism to all nations- could not succeed in the short timespan thought to be the distinctive marker of the messianic age.
Israel’s story was not one of failure and constant rebellion. Her story is more complex. While worshiping idols in the crudest possible way during the period of the judges, eventually the nation began to digest its lesson. During the age of the kingdoms of Israel and Judah, idolatry continued to exist but was less common. More common was worship of the one true God but in forbidden ways. And with the exile and return, the Jewish people ceased to worship on high places, but worshiped according to God’s instructions, bearing witness of the one Lord and King to the Gentiles among whom they lived. What happened at this point in her history- forty years before the fall of the Temple- is where Orthodox Judaism and Orthodox Christianity part ways. But we can both see that there was change. Slowly but surely, God molded His chosen nation.
Even so, compare the census provided at the beginning of Numbers with the census figures provided at the beginning of Ezra. The Jewish people had been put through a refiner’s fire- and what emerged had been purified, a worthy vessel for the Most High’s divine purpose- but it was reduced to a fraction of what it was in the process.
How? If this is what it took- a thousand years with most bloodlines disappearing- to gain a Torah-faithful people, how could the prophetic word come true? All nations flowing to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob? Universal peace? Swords into plowshares? With a thousand years and such a cost- with no lack of direct, miraculous, and empirical verification of the divine commandments- how could all nations be gathered to the one God in the short chronology that traditional Judaism provides for the accomplishment of the messianic task?
This is why, my friends, I find the Christian interpretation of history more compelling. This does not prove Jesus is the Messiah. Proving that requires much more direct evidence. It requires a careful engagement with everything written in the Torah and Prophets. But in my view, this does show that there are serious problems, given the Torah’s own witness to the pattern of human life and the nature of human rebellion, with the rabbinic concept of the Jewish Messiah and the short timespan given for his mission. On the Christian view I hold, Jesus as Israel’s Messiah secures in His own person the resurrection of the dead, the inheritance of all nations, and the circumcision of the heart through the outpouring of the Spirit. Jesus is enthroned and reigning now, and the divine work for the healing of all nations and the gathering up of the entire human family into one faithful people- with many languages, tongues, and songs- proceeds apace. Producing a small faithful remnant among the Jewish people took a thousand years from the Torah covenant to the return under King Cyrus. Now, God’s work is much more ambitious. No longer a mere remnant, but all nations. The dispersed human family which had united around the idolatrous altar of Babylon in its early history shall ultimately be united around the one faithful altar of Zion in the continuing unfolding of the Creator’s wise purpose in the world.
Two thousand years ago, the New Testament was written. Its central subject- Jesus of Nazareth- was to most who were acquainted in passing with Him a strange curiosity. A Jewish prophet and wonderworker, crucified, executed. His disciples claimed He had been resurrected. And there were some among the Jews and Gentiles who believed. But when the New Testament was written, what we today call Christianity was a relatively obscure cult from the east. And in the midst of its obscurity, the authors of these texts proudly declared that the crucified Jew was lord over all nations, that all would bend the knee to him. They claimed that he reigned from a throne in the heavenlies, and that this would be affirmed in his subduing all nations to himself, in his defeat of his enemies, and in the proclamation of his name. A strange claim, to be sure.
And yet here we are. The claims made of Jesus of Nazareth in the New Testament were not made in light of a profound and unexpected success among the Gentile peoples. It was not as if so many Gentiles began to be compelled by the Jewish teacher Yeshua that some Jews thought he may be the one who would make God known to the nations. No, the cult was an obscure one, and a fragmenting one. And yet, they made their claims. They said that He was the one to make God known. And less than three centuries later, the Emperor of the Romans declared that idolatry would be obliterated from the Roman state and that the Roman Empire would celebrate the God who had elected Abraham, brought Israel from Egypt, and sent the prophets. And the Emperor of the Romans proclaimed this God to be the one God in the Name of the Jew who was crucified and proclaimed as enthroned among His relatively small community of passionate followers three centuries earlier: Jesus.
That many believe that Jesus is indeed the Jewish Messiah is no proof, of course, that He is such. Such would have to be made through direct and careful engagement with Israel’s Scriptures. And yet in light of what I explored above concerning the deep implausibility of the idea, given human nature and our tendency towards rebellion, that the messianic work of illumining and healing the nations could take place in an historical instant, his claim to be Israel’s Messiah has a certain plausibility to it. It demands consideration. Billions from the nations at least claim to worship the one God of Abraham, influenced in one way or another by the historical impact of Jesus of Nazareth. To be sure, the peace and universal dominion unveiled in the prophets has not yet unfolded in its fullness, or near its fullness. But that reality is not true because of a low truth about the impact of Jesus on history, but because of the high horizons to which the prophets point- and which Jesus Himself reaffirms. As John Ortberg has explored in multiple books, the world has without question been brought nearer to sanctification through Jesus. There are steps forward and back. But consider where His people were two thousand years ago- and what “Jesus of Nazareth” meant to most people then- comparing that with the name “Jesus of Nazareth” today, we can see that the prophetic vision, a vision which could not take place in anything other than ages of time- has moved forward and continues to do so in the name of Jesus the Messiah.
The guarantee of the future success of the church is in the faithfulness of God in making its proclamation heard in the past. A long future for the church is a message of hope, not despair. For the “God of Hope” is one who does not cast away the world in disgust nor do only the bare minimum. The superabundance of His grace brings, as the Apocalypse makes manifest, the “healing of the nations” In light of the possibility- ad even probability- of this long future, Paul’s words in Ephesians 2:4-7 gain new depth:
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with the Messiah--by grace you have been saved-- and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in the Messiah Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in the Messiah- Jesus.
The revelation of the grace of God occurs in the reality that the time of grace is not a brief window for escape from a collapsing and doomed world, but in a mystery of “coming ages” in which the gifts given are truly “immeasurable.”

Hey Mika I've been seeing a guy for over a year now and I'm madly in love but he says we can't date because he is Jewish and I am not. It breaks my heart but I know I have to respect it. Is their anything I can do? I've been learing about the religion for years now and practice things by noahide code. I really want to be with him.
firstable he shouldn’t have been seeing you for the past year if he knew he wasn’t interested in a long term relationship with a gentile. he sounds like a shmuck. i would heavily discourage you from converting to judaism for this relationship and i think you can do better. i’m sorry he strung you along like this, it’s completely unfair and ridiculous. perhaps his family is pressuring him? if that’s the case he needs to get it together and stand up to them. wishing you absolutely all the best
