Near Record-Breaking Dry November Followed Near Record-Breaking Wet October
Dale C. S. Destin – Published 22 December 2023 | In the span of two months, Antigua experienced a meteorological rollercoaster, going from a near-record-breaking wet October to a near-record-breaking dry November. With an island-average total of 25.7 mm (1.01 in), November 2023 has emerged as the second driest such month on record. It fell just short of the historic low set back in 1947, a…

No Longer Remembered 11.15.23 “Upstream Flow”
The rain fell Crashing down from clouds Without a rapturous thunder or applause And yet the ground is dry The soil hard and cracked Parched and stretched This wordless story even I know November ends with shadowed skies Clouds suspended like school holidays Work days, shortened, lengthened, stressed Harder, higher so to impress Where does the rain go? Before it reaches is destination Leaves fall, like rain falls Their autumnal duet in descent Where is the water, the leaf and the grass Left only dirt and destruction, like glass Shattered the summer, the fall soon to end Where is the rainfall to wash away past I couldn’t even get wet From the experience I was left dry High on the land above the sea Above the leaves and grass and dirt Dry as my bones will be when I am dead When I am gone Burning up final trudging dregs of fuel The rain fell and the sun burned on And I turned on, the radio Playing songs I’ve never heard Speaking words of wars and news That doesn’t land As though gravity was turned off Nothing bears any weight These empty words, like mispackaged candies Promises and rainfall that does not do As it wishes to, as it should The earth is crying, I am crying We are crying– no tears from our eyes Dries, beneath the cloud cover No smoking signs obscured I cannot enjoy this weather Or like it, Wait less, and without service Without mass This should surely pass Like the clouds, like the rain, like the drought Like the pain, like the fall, into winter Padded over with powder Lightening and lightning Until little else remains

Silvköparen, a walk by the lake. Took a short hike yesterday. Gruvdammsrundan is a hiking trail that is "circular", you get back to where you started when you finish. So yesterday I wandered in the other direction. Unfortunately, I didn't have much time and energy, but it was nice to get out into nature.
Walked by the lake and then entered the forest.

Anon: hi!! i hope you’re doing well 😊 i saw your requests were open and i’m hoping you could write something about reader overhearing jaehyun talking/admitting to friends that the reader fell first but he fell harder. it could purely be fluff but i won’t be opposed to it being angst to fluff hahaha — anyway, i hope this is alright with you! thank youuu
The Boyfriend Experience || @kdyism💕✅
enlisting you as his “someone i’m seeing” excuse, renjun tries to get his mom to stop asking him about his date for his cousin’s wedding and in turn, it puts your already tired feelings for him in a loop.
Tumblr media
Walls, Brawls & Sudden Rainfalls || @jishyucks💕💔🔄💯
Your first impression of Huang Renjun wasn’t the greatest. In fact, the first two encounters you did have with him were enough for you to conclude that he was just some cold-blooded boy who genuinely didn’t care about anyone else but himself. That was, of course, before the (damn) universe brings you both together to work on the local daycare’s mural. (this is just a teaser but i cant wait to read it)
Tumblr media
Drippin’ || @neowinestainedress 🔞💕✅
you need relief from this strange pain you’re feeling, but you don’t know what to do. Your boyfriend and his friends offer to help, giving you a solution you didn’t quite expect coming.
Hazy || @rkiv4d🔞💕✅
mark’s been soft and sweet since you met him, the epitome of the boy you’d take him to meet the parents. he’s the poster boy for the gentleman, the timid lover, his touches never rough. but what happens when you don’t want gentle, when you want him to break you? what happens when you push him to the brink? what happens when he snaps?
Tourist || @minniesvenus💕✅
a day where your boyfriend wants to play tourist in your own city
Vitamin || @jiivoc💕💔✅💯
Unexpectedly, your own demons had crept up on you without any warning. (oh lord have mercy on my mind)
Pretty Boys || @eeniemeeniechannie 💕🔄
↳ unexpectedly you a new girl in seoul suddenly got into a lot couple fight and also didn't expect to meet them again.
Sweet Deception || @neowinestainedress🔞✅💯💯
↳ on Halloween, nothing is as it seems. You end up in a room with six guys thinking they have amazing costumes only to be struck by reality when it’s too late; those are not costumes at all. But remember, on October 31, nothing is as it seems. (OLEDUJIKJLASAIKLSJOJIKSDOIKAJDIJOKASAIKOSDSODIKLDOAJSI. my feels when i was reading this)
Toil and Trouble || @moonjella 🔞💕💔✅

Uncharted Waters || @lily-blue 💕💔✅
↳ you’re so in love with Prince Chenle, the boy you rescued when he was knocked overboard, that you’re willing to sacrifice everything to be with him - little do you know, everything is exactly what he wants to take away from you

A+Ta Boy. || @nctream💕💔🔄💯💯
↳ monotonous café waitress Y/N ends up getting mixed in the world of Seoul’s illegal street racing. There against her will, something seems to bring her deeper and deeper into that terrifying world; maybe it’s the dangerous people that she had learned to know, or maybe it’s Mark Lee himself. Either way, she should have listened to Irene’s words, she would’ve ended up hurt — and not because of a car crash.
A Racer’s Heart || @ljxlj48💕💔🔄💯
(i really suck at making up summaries but give this a read!)

Where Will Autumn's Colors Appear First? Reuters/Illustration USA Today
Fall Foliage Predictions: These Maps Show When And Where To See Peak Colors
— Doyle Rice and Janet Loehrke | September 01, 2024
The blistering summer of 2024 will soon be coming to an end, and that means fall leaf peeping can't be far behind.
According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, leaves can change their color from as early as mid-September all the way through early November. "Typically, the second and third week of October are the peak times, but it shifts depending on where you live and your local weather conditions," the Almanac said.
Warm, sunny days are good for vibrant fall colors, but only if they are accompanied by cool nights, according to the Weather Channel. Precipitation can also affect the color show – extreme drought and excessive rainfall are both detrimental to foliage.
A warm period during fall will also lower the intensity of autumn colors, the U.S. Forest Service said. The latest forecast from the Climate Prediction Center shows that a warmer-than-average fall is likely for nearly the entire U.S.
Where and when leaves are predicted to change
Here's a county-by-county breakdown of how the 2023 foliage changed across the U.S.:

New England boasts some of the most colorful fall foliage displays. Every year, about ten million leafpeepers visit the region to enjoy the beauty of fall. Typically, northern Vermont, New Hampshire, and northwest Maine experience peak early in October.
Parts of New York, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania must wait until late into October, according to ExploreFall.com.

Drought Can Affect Fall Colors
According to the U.S. Forest Service, a severe summer drought can delay the onset of fall color by a few weeks. Drought was particularly harsh in the mid-Atlantic and central Appalachians this summer, which could delay the fall foliage season there, according to AccuWeather meteorologist Paul Pastelok.

How Leaves Change Color In The Fall
As the amount of daylight gets shorter in the fall, chlorophyll production in leaves slows down and eventually stops. Chlorophyll gives leaves a green color, so when these pigments are not visible, carotenoids, which produce yellow orange and brown colors, show through, according to the Virginia Department of Forestry.
Bright light and excess plant sugars are abundant during the season, and they help produce anthocyanins, which add red to plants.

A writer’s guide to forests: Telling the seasons
Nothing ever stays the same.That’s just the reality of living on a planet that is tilted at roughly 23.5 degrees from vertical (can be a bit more or less). The further one gets away from the equator, the more things change depending on where the Earth is in its rotation around the sun. The seasons and how they change the forest environment can greatly affect the story by influencing your characters, cultures and societies, presenting new opportunities and hardships as the year goes by.
Temperate to Boreal- Here the seasons are at their most obvious, with marked differences in weather, appearance, and even wildlife.
•Spring- This is when things are awakening from winter. The days grow longer and warmer, and living things awaken from their long slumber. This is when most plants flower and animals give birth. The weather is pleasant most of the time, but storms can arise, especially at the start of the season.
•Summer- The days are at their longest and warmest. Life is in full swing at this time. Summer days are generally considered gentle, but this is the time when clear days can turn dark and the air is full of rain, wind, and lightning-especially in areas where cyclones frequent. In short, this is when things are at their most active.
•Autumn- The time when things begin to wind down. The days grow short, the air begins to chill, and the once green leaves change color and fall to the forest floor. For some creatures, this is the time when they migrate to warmer areas. Any who choose to stay will use what time is left to prepare for the winter. As the days get colder, it will become more common to see frost, and for late season storms to bring snow instead of rain.
•Winter- The lean times. Apart from the conifers that keep their greenery year round, the trees will be bare. Many creatures will be underground; hibernating or going through the larders stocked during the summer months. Those active and above ground are constantly battling against the cold and hunger. Freezing rain, sleet, and snow are a given. There is little light to be had, and in the northernmost reaches daytime is measured in minutes.
Tropical forests- The seasons are not as noticeable in the tropics. There isn’t that much difference between night and day, trees generally keep their leaves year round, and temperature fluctuations throughout the year are smaller than at more northerly or southerly latitudes. That’s not to say that there are no differences. They just manifest themselves in different ways.
•Wet or Rainy season- This is an obvious one, for it implies a lot of rain. While it will not rain every day, the humidity will be at its highest, with mist and fog a common occurrence. Storms can be violent, and large areas of land can be flooded for weeks or months at a time. Fish and other aquatic animals spread out into flooded forests, whilst other animals become more concentrated in areas above the floodwaters.
•Dry season-Another obvious one. Rainfall can be scarce to nonexistent, depending on the area. Dry forests at first appearance resemble a temperate forest in winter, as trees in both shed their leaves. But in the tropics, it is hot, and animal life concentrates wherever there is permanent water.
•Cyclone season- Anywhere close to the ocean runs the risk of tropical storms (roughly June-October in the northern hemisphere and November-March in the southern). These are violent events that can cause floods, uproot trees, and overall make life difficult both during and after the storm.
•Seasons in upland and cloud forests- The effects of elevation can be quite similar to those of higher latitudes. Though the day/night cycle remains constant, temperatures fluctuate more than at lower elevations. Nights are cooler than days, trees gradually change from evergreen to deciduous, and some areas can see snow if it gets cold enough. Animals here tends to follow a similar pattern to those in temperate forests, with some species choosing to migrate, hibernate, or stockpile food in response to colder temperatures.

For those who have moved north in recent years and are still grappling with the warmer conditions, Jerry offers a class in Sub-tropical Gardening 101.
The weather:
Just because you’ve moved to the warm sub-tropics, doesn’t mean you’ll no longer get frosts! And while there’s plenty of sunshine, summer rainfall can be patchy and erratic.
There are two main seasons: warm and cool.
* Warm runs from December to March and it’s generally wetter. Rainfall can be short and heavy.
* The cool season runs from May to November and that’s generally drier, with lower temperatures and less humidity.
Soil: Jerry recommends adding compost to the soil whenever sowing or planting to help combat these seasonal shifts. And always cover the soil with mulch to capture and store seasonal downfalls. Jerry uses chopped sugar cane.
Starchy staples - potatoes can rot or wither in Brisbane, so Jerry grows yams, arrowroot, sweet potatoes and bananas instead.
He recommends sweet potato and an easy plant for beginners; plant in a raised bed for good drainage, then feed monthly and water sparingly. Watch for grasshoppers and lift all your crop at harvest to avoid leaving food for weavils. Crop rotation avoids reinfestation, too. Plant in spring for harvest after 3-4 months. Don’t forget the new shoots are edible, too!
Leafy greens can go to seed quickly in the heat. They do best in the cool season but sowing for succession harvests helps, too. Jerry grows a range of greens, including Ethiopian cabbage, leeks, sweet leaf, kings salad, and herbs.
A good starter for beginners is celtuce, which tastes like a cross between celery and lettuce. As well as using the leaves, the stems can be peeled, sliced and stir-fried.
Fruit trees - Jerry says you need at least one exotic sub-tropical fruit and his pick is the papaya. You can eat the ripe fruit, make a lovely green papaya salad, the seed relieves constipation and the chopped leaves have a peppery taste. Treat as short-term perennials and replace every 2-3 years. To avoid fruit fly, pick the fruit green and ripen it indoors.
Tomatoes - in the subtropics the seed should be sown in March for planting in April or May because they grow better in the dry season. This also helps avoid fruit fly attack - until late September, at least. Grow cherry tomatoes to reduce the risk of caterpillar attack.
Frangipani - a sub-tropical must-have. Don’t limit yourself to the old-fashioned white flowers - there are hundreds of cultivars that will grow in the sub tropics, so enjoy them and the different fragrances they bring. They need full sun and excellent drainage. Feed with a slow-release fertiliser that’s high in phosphorous and potassium twice a year: in spring and summer.
Featured plants:
Winged yam (Dioscorea alata)
Banana (Musa cv.)
Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas cv.)
Bok choy (Brassica rapa cv.)
Ethopian cabbage (Brassica carinata)
Leek (Allium ampeloprasum cv.)
* Sweet leaf (Breynia androgyna)
* Kings salad (Cosmos caudatus)
Rice Paddy Herb (Limnophila aromatica)
Fish Mint (Houttuynia cordata)
*La Lot (Piper sarmentosum)
Celtuce (Lactuca sativa cv.)
*Papaya (Carica papaya cv.)
Tomato ‘Grosse Lisse’ (Solanum lycopersicum cv.)
Frangipani (Plumeria cv.)

Long-Tailed Mouse (Pseudomys higginsi)
Family: Typical Mouse Family (Muridae)
IUCN Conservation Status: Least Concern
Found only on Tasmania but widely distributed across its home island, the Long-Tailed Mouse is one of relatively few non-marsupial mammals native to Australia (with its ancestors having likely drifted from southern Asia on beds of vegetation around 6-8 million years ago.) While members of this species can inhabit a wide range of habitats they are most abundant in wet, humid forests, and are largely nocturnal (spending the day in a burrow dug in soft, damp soil, although in areas where predators are scarce they may become increasingly active during the day.) Long-Tailed Mice feed on insects, fruits, ferns, mosses and other forms of damp vegetation (often taking in so much water when eating that they do not need to drink,) and dig networks of tunnels across the forest floor near their home den to allow them to forage without being detected by predators such as Australian Masked Owls, Eastern Quolls and invasive Domestic Cats with which their natural predators are forced to compete. Adults of this species breed mainly between November and April (although mating may occur at any time of year following heavy rainfall, with the population of this species often exploding in size following rainy periods,) and it is typical for a single female to produce two litters of 2-4 young in each breeding season. Newborn Long-Tailed Mice are furry but unable to move, see or eat, and remain in their mother’s den where they are protected and fed on milk until they are around 40 days old. Although a mother Long-Tailed Mouse will typically leave her young in their den when she goes out to forage, she is able to carry them away from the den and to safety in the event of an attack by having them cling to her underside using specialized blunt, inwards-facing incisors with which they are born.

15th February 1817 saw the birth in Glasgow of Robert Angus Smith.
You may not have heard of him, or maybe you read about him in my previous post? Anyway we have all heard of acid rain, defined by National Geographic magazine thus: “Acid rain describes any form of precipitation that contains high levels of nitric and sulfuric acids. It can also occur in the form of snow, fog, and tiny bits of dry material that settle to Earth.”
The words “acid rain” were coined as long ago as 1859 by Angus Smith, who seven years earlier had made the discovery that northern cities across Britain were suffering from rainfall that contained heavy pollutants that were the result of the burning of coal that was rich in sulphur. His research found that the worst-affected city was his home town of Glasgow.
Robert Angus Smith was born in Pollokshaws the seventh son and 12th child of John Smith, originally from Ayrshire, and his wife Janet, daughter of James Thomson who owned a mill at Strathaven in Lanarkshire.
His elder brother John was a big influence on Angus’s life. John eventually became a senior teacher at Perth Academy, and was himself a scientist who would research theories on colour and light. He encouraged his younger brother to read the works of Joseph Priestley, the pioneering English chemist, and Angus Smith was greatly influenced by Priestley’s writings.
He attended Glasgow University from the age of 13, apparently to prepare for a career in the Church of Scotland ministry, but he left without graduating and then became a tutor to families, first in Scotland and then in England. In 1839 he accompanied the Bridgeman family to Germany where he remained to study under the Professor Justus Liebeg, gaining his PhD in 1841.
On returning to England he took a post at Manchester Royal Institution as assistant to Lyon Playfair, an Indian-born Scot and a scientist and politician.
Playfair passed on his own interest in the sanitation of towns and cities to Angus Smith, who left the Institution to set up in business as an analytical chemist. As concern grew about pollution, his services were in demand, and in one famous experiment he waited until a crowded room had emptied then collected the residue on windows to prove that human breath exuded not just carbon dioxide but organic matter dangerous to health.
Smith once graphically described the effects of Manchester’s polluted atmosphere, in a letter to the Manchester Guardian published on November 2, 1844.
He wrote: “Coming in from the country last week on a beautiful morning, when the air was unusually clear and fresh, I was surprised to find Manchester was enjoying the atmosphere of a dark December day… Those who would defend such evils, who would remain careless as long as any probable cause is unremoved, must surely be devoid not only of mercy, but of clear perception and of good taste. The gloominess of uncleanness is everywhere around us.”
In 1851 he began the research that would make him the “father of acid rain” as he is often known. Smith proved that sulphur compounds in the air of towns and cities were the result of burning coal and coke transported in air and rainwater, and even as the industrial revolution was bringing more and more factories into being, Smith was arguing that manufacturers should be held responsible for their pollution.
He investigated poor housing and water quality, and published numerous papers that formed the basis of the developing science of environmental chemistry. One report on the problems of pollution for the Royal Mines Commission was particularly devastating in its scientific indictment of the polluters.
Smith was called as an expert witness in a court case over factory and mine pollution and his testimony was convincing. Consequently when the British Government decided to legislate – in the Alkali Act of 1863 – to try and cut pollution from mining and manufacturing, there was really only one man to turn to as the first chief of the alkali inspectorate and thus Smith spent much of the next two decades transforming attitudes to pollution.
In 1872 Smith published his Air and Rain, the beginnings of a Chemical Climatology, in which he collected the result of his experiments. It proved how ground-breaking his work had been.
With honorary degrees from both Glasgow and Edinburgh University, Angus Smith was honoured in his own lifetime. His health declined badly in his later years and he died at at Colwyn Bay, North Wales, on May 12, 1884, being buried in the churchyard of St Paul’s, Kersal, Manchester.
He was paid a most generous tribute in the first edition of Nature magazine following his death: “For upwards of 40 years he laboured unceasingly to show how chemistry might minister to the material comfort and physical well-being of men — not in the manufacture of new compounds useful in the arts, or in the establishment of new industries – but in raising the general standard of the health of communities by checking or counteracting the evils which have followed in the train of that enormous development of the manufacturing arts which is the boast of this century.
“In his true vocation, as the chemist of sanitary science, Smith worked alone, and we have yet to find the man on whom his mantle has fallen."

Brazil greenlights measures to prevent energy supply woes
Tumblr media
Brazil’s Electricity Monitoring Committee, which brings together government and independent agencies, approved a series of preventive measures to guarantee the supply of electricity in Brazil, in view of the severe drought that the country is facing.
According to the committee’s forecasts, the water flow in hydroelectric plants in September could be the second worst in 94 years. In the rolling quarter beginning this month, the volume of rainfall will be below the historical average in the North and Center-West, and temperatures will be above average throughout Brazil.
The committee gave its approval for the National Electric System Operator (ONS) to activate thermoelectric plants in Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo states in November, even if outside the so-called “order of merit” — that is, even if this costs more than the average price of energy.
The authorized measures also allow the ONS to use less stringent performance and safety criteria until November, if necessary. This includes, for example, temporarily removing restrictions on the distribution of energy generated by renewable sources in the Northeast to other Brazilian states.
