Felix Angel Solis Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson

If a good man is hard to find, a great one’s murder. Felix Solis, currently killing it in The Rookie: Feds, and who killed, literally, as Omar Navarro in Ozark, the role which broke him out of actors actor/working actor to famous actor. Deserved. All over the place. Felix’s stunning performance in the Pulitzer-winning, The Cost of Living, is forever seared in my soul. As is his Navarro. How the hell did he make that unconscionable murderer likable and even at times… sympathetic! Chilling and thrilling.

We talked about fame, which first found him mid-pandemic when he and we were masked. Here he was on the most talked about show on television, with the most talked about part, and he was hiding in his house avoiding people and life, invisible walking amongst us when he wasn’t. 

Felix’s reentry into living includes being recognized daily, which he views with humility and recognition, citing an example of his own stargazing awe. His return to “normal,” has been gradual, aided greatly by resumed work where strict protocols allowed for a certain feeling of safety, and at the time forced his willingness to take risks. 

Felix details why he began the pandemic in abject terror and how now, he’s replaced fear with respect.

We talked about the current writers’ strike, its impact on the industry, and on actors, many of whom can’t afford to lose work, yet, looking ahead at the bigger picture. Felix argued both sides, clearly torn.

Success has shockingly had little effect so far on the work on offer, yet, the man’s been busy just wrapping the last of 22 episodes of The Rookie: Feds. 

Cultivating ideas for his Subway Token Films (with his partner in this and in life), just today he reached out to Pulitzer Prize Winning Playwright, Martyna Majok, who penned Cost of Living. I’ve been manifesting this “marriage” for 5 years. 🤞

Readying for a trip to New York, we talked the current scary weather/air quality due to the Canadian fires, to whether to mask in the jazz clubs, to what pizza rules. Felix had a somewhat existential good every man answer, but we both know, it’s Joe’s!

I noted earlier today that the first time we sat down in 2018, Felix, with a long, deep resume already to his credit, was soft-spoken to a fault. I had to turn my volume up to 11. Our next sit-down, 4 yrs later, post-filming the final season of Ozark, and portraying Navarro for 2 seasons, Felix sat up straighter, spoke louder, and took up more air in the room. This visit, a year later still, Felix fills the screen. In part, no doubt, we know each other better, staying in touch here and there between these conversations, but more than that, this man is shining into his well-deserved and earned, star.

Philanthropic, a generous, warm-hearted, art-affirming humanist, Felix is sizzling hot and downright lovely. I adore spending time in his razor-sharp, thought-provoking, mind-bending, company.  Can’t wait to watch whatever he’s got coming up next. For tonight, going back to the Solis archive - gonna watch Man on a Ledge. I need more Felix!

Maxine Waters’ (D-CA) was arrested over the weekend, according to The Daily Beast. Saturday night, businessman Omar Navarro was arrested after he was seen near his ex-girlfriend #DeAnnaLorraineTesoriero’s apartment. Tesoriero is running a campaign against House Speaker #NancyPelosi (D-CA) She told The Beast that she saw Navarro outside her home before getting a text message from an unknown number saying, “Bitch, I came to see you.” He allegedly offered her money to marry him and threatened to give her relatives’ address to the anti-fascist group known as “Antifa.” He also threatened her pets. “He would have stolen my cats,” Tesoriero said. She called the police, and he was arrested on three felony charges, including felony stalking, criminal threats and attempted extortion. He also faces violating a five-year restraining order Tesoriero got this year. “Clearly, he has a lot of screws loose,” Tesoriero said of Navarro. “I think a lot of this power has gotten into his head. He has a lot of money now from campaign donations.” Navarro has managed to make more than $1 million in campaign dollars from supporters of President Donald Trump by opposing Waters. As a result, Navarro has parlayed that into failed campaign attempts in 2016 and 2018, where Waters won by more than 50 percent. Despite the losses, Navarro announced he’ll run again in 2020. Today Live! Omar Navarro, the baddest of the bad guys, one of the greatest performances, from one of the greatest shows, Ozark… actually, Felix Solis, who plays him… who is the sweetest of the sweet, and one of the greatest actors I've ever witnessed on stage and on screen.

How excited am I? I LOVE this man. Felix, a Nuyorican, is an actors actor, an evolved thinker, an advanced doer, and a stellar, entertaining human. He's one of a kind. 

Some years ago, thanks to Candy Clark, I was treated to a night of theatre I'll not forget. From the moment the Pulitzer Prize-winning, The Cost of Living, began, with Felix's unforgettable monologue, delivered directly to me (it was, wasn't it - how you know how effective Felix is, everyone in the theatre felt the same way)... I was forever changed. It was one of those kinds of experiences. He is one of those kinds of actors. I never, not for one second caught him acting. The entire play, with its miraculous cast of four, two wheelchair-bound, was life-changing and affirming. We waited at the stage door like schoolgirls to have a moment, and it took barely a moment for me to track Felix down here on The Facebook as soon as I got home to invite him to sit down in conversation with me... what a Game Changers that was... and he came to the living room and performed that very monologue for Women Who Write. STELLAR! 

From Ozark to Seal Team, Felix's regular series work also includes Ten Days in the Valley, Hawaii Five-O, The Family, Colony, The Good Wife, The Following, Made in Jersey, NYC 22, and Law & Order, with guest appearances on Mindhunter, Nurse Jackie, Criminal Minds, and The Sopranos, History of Them, and most recently, The Rookie, The Rookie: Feds, and City on Fire, to name but some. His film work includes Man on a Ledge, The Forgotten, and most recently, Allswell. 

Whatever Felix does, I look forward to it all––almost as much as having this additional opportunity to share his journey, his thoughts, and his beautiful heart. He’s become a cherished friend. What a blessing.

Ozark’s Felix Solis on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson

Ozark finale exposed! Not! But, Omar Navarro, aka Felix Solis, did give us some skinny on the season 4 filming, and, Jason Bateman’s words on the ending, as well as Omar’s.  How to wait till Friday when Netflix drops the last 7 episodes! 

As gifted a thespian as Felix is, is as warm, generous, fun, and thought-provoking he is as a human. Felix is a rare actor who lets us in on his process––his thinking, his feelings, in creating his characters.  He detailed how he humanized Omar, how he made it possible for us to like this mad, murdering, drug lord. And, he makes it sound so simple… and easy. 

We talked the pandemic, and how he transitioned from absolute fear to careful, almost fearless––filming the final season of Ozark with the brilliant Jason, Laura Linney, and Julia Garner to name but three, was a pretty great motivator. Felix followed up with The Rookie and Charmed and has a new Apple TV series in the about to be, works.  

We went back to his “lazy” beginnings, passing on LaGuardia High School (although accepted to the school Fame was modeled after), because it was a couple of miles away from this his apartment, opting instead for the local High School, 2 blocks away. It’s nearly impossible to imagine Felix being lazy about anything––his work is methodical, meticulous, downright genius. Philip Seymour Hoffman thought so, convincing Felix with wise words to opt-in on a game-changing theatrical production rather than waiting on Hollywood; Al Pacino’s a fan, wrote and told him so, prior to their working together in Salome, and clearly, Jason Bateman is too, entrusting Felix with his most insidious villain to date.

Felix’s stunning performance in the Pulitzer-winning, The Cost of Living, is forever seared in my soul, as is his unforgettable Omar Navarro. 

I love every second in Felix’s company, and every moment I experience his craft, his art, which, I’ve never once detected him using. An actor’s actor, Felix presents characters in all their humanity, glory, and flaws. I’ve never, for one instant, ever caught him acting. Because he isn’t. He embodies. He becomes. Lucky us to bear witness.
