When selecting an Office 365 backup solution, businesses should focus on automated backups, granular recovery options, security, and scalability. These features help protect critical data from accidental deletions and malicious attacks, ensuring that business operations remain uninterrupted in case of data loss.

Spending my whole Sunday with unsubscribing from a bunch of digital services and setting up the hardware + software to host them myself is.
Not what I WANTED TO be doing (would rather be napping and perhaps hahah jorking da penits) but it's like. Cleaning out that *one* cupboard which you've just exasperatedly jammed a bunch of stuff into.
It sucks while you're doing it, never fucking seems to end like this shit has SO MANY FUCKING STEPS, but. BUT.
It's gonna be so sexy when it's done. All organised and guilt-free. Honestly I think this is why I let my dishes pile up each week, so I get the dopamine rush of seeing an empty sink again.

Microsoft: You should really backup your files to OneDrive!
Me: You don't have enough space.
Microsoft: No worries! You can upgrade to $20 a year for 100GB of space!
Me: Still not enough space.
Microsoft: Oh.. uh.. you can upgrade to $70 a year for 1TB of space!
Me: NOT ENOUGH!
Microsoft: WHAT DO YOU MEAN, "NOT ENOUGH SPACE"? HOW MANY IMPORTANT FILES DO YOU HAVE?!
Me: I HAVE 2TB OF VIDEOS AND SCREENSHOTS!
Microsoft: THAT'S NOT IMPORTANT ENOUGH TO BACKUP.
Me: MEMORIES ARE IMPORTANT!!

Inspired by that one person who uses my IFTTT applet “Mastodon Backup to OneNote and OneDrive” I’ve published another one of the applets I use for my own backup system: this time I’ve published the one I use for backing up my Instagram posts to OneNote (as a page), and to OneDrive (as a jpeg and the post’s text as txt file.
You can check it out here, and scroll the screenshot below to see how it works.

I turned on OneDrive like a goddamn fool and while most of what happened, I have already fixed or can fix rather easily, I accidentally somehow wound up moving my Documents folder to my Desktop which is frustrating and also fucking up my video games, since my save files aren't in the directory they're trying to fetch from
and I cannot figure out how to fix it so I guess I'm gonna put my Best Buy membership to use and have the computer experts help me put things back in order
don't turn on OneDrive unless you know exactly what you're doing, folks

I am so fucking glad this actually returned what I was trying to say while writing tags about Law's kickass outfits because the unhelpful instamash mix I disrespectfully call a brain was supplementing all the wrong words and I didn't feel like finding that one writing thesaurus site on mobile
#My brain does this ALL THE TIME ITS SO ANNOYING#Like no buddy!!! Those are the wrong words stop it!!!#Today I forgot the word for syllable. My brain would not stop saying 'consonant' when that's not what I wanted and I knew that wasn't it#It's so frustrating#Because like. I *know* the words. I*know* I know the words. So Why. Why. Why. Can't you just remember them correctly. Ever.#It makes writing so difficult because once I'm knocked out of that flow state by searching stuff I'm never getting back#It's the same with like CS stuff. I *KNOW* these things. So Why can my brain just decide to conveniently forget the instant#I actually NEED to remember the information. Like 'whoops teehee'#'yeah those documents u wanted that were taking up space on my desk forever and ever? I JUST shredded them'#So I spend 48 hours stomping around rewriting all the paperwork and then when the task is done and over with#THEN ITS LIKE 'oh so I found a copy on one drive because it made an automatic backup but nobody uses or likes onedrive so I didn't see it'#WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS BRAIN#Aaaaaaaaaaaaaa-#Anyway. I thought this was mildly humorous I'm not actually That Frustrated about what just happened#It's more of just a general frustration with how my brain functions bc like. Come on#I put so much work in to learn and memorize all this stuff and it just takes it throws it out the window#It's very much a 'why should I even bother trying at this point' scenario for me#Cruddy rambles#Obviously apathy will get me nowhere. But it's extremely hard to stay positive when I legit just forget I need to do that :/

I hate OneDrive so fucking much. It is the bane of my existence to such a degree that I started trying out Linux. I'm not a good coder, nor do I intend to learn soon, but I was so pissed with all the hidden options that used to be easy access on windows 7 and 8. Not to mention the creeping infection that is "ai assistants" which just feels like legal spyware to me.
smartphone storage plateauing in favor of just storing everything in the cloud is such dogshit. i should be able to have like a fucking terabyte of data on my phone at this point. i hate the fucking cloud

Why You Need To Backup Your Writing Beyond The Cloud
Tumblr media
When it comes to making a backup of your writing, it's easy these days to default to saving it in the cloud. Services like OneDrive or Google Drive make it easy to keep copies, but with companies selling your data to train AI, increasing threats from political regimes, and companies cracking down on what's stored on their servers, making a backup of your writing needs to think beyond the cloud. When you backup your writing, it's important to think about the ramifications of where you're backing up, as well as how you're backing up. I recently experienced this when a hard drive on the computer I use as a file server got corrupted. All of a sudden, I almost "lost" the outline and paper I was working on for college. And there, I used OneDrive as a redundant way to keep a copy of my work while I restored my file server. But before that I used my pc backup solution, Backblaze, to grab a copy of the outline to save locally. Without Backblaze, I would have lost a day's worth of work, and while that doesn't sound like much, it was pretty vital work to my paper.
There are a few issues to be aware of when using services like OneDrive or GDrive.
- These companies (Microsoft and Google) are known for using your data to train their AI models, infringing on your copyright. - Google has been known to remove erotic or adult backups from Drive or prevent people from sharing files like ARCs with multiple people because they see it as a violation of their Terms of Service - With concerns over censorship and cracking down on LGBTQIA+ and adult content due to the political environment, you can't trust these companies not to turn over data or other identifying pieces of information in an attempt to avoid repercussions.
So what options do authors have?
If you do sync to online cloud services, make sure you keep a backup somewhere else. For example, I have the local computer that I use as a file server. This computer is then backed up using Backblaze, so there's always a cloud copy. They also encrypt your data to keep it safe. (They're not the only computer backup service, just the one that I've found is best for price and needs.) Build in redundancy. Try to have one backup available to you, such as an external hard drive so you can keep files accessible without relying on the internet or an external service. Use a cloud backup service just in case something happens like a natural disaster with your physical location. And be smart about how you use services like OneDrive or Google Drive, knowing that they are most likely using your data to train AI and may take actions to remove things they deem are violations of their terms of service or in order to avoid goverment scrutiny. I admit I didn't think OneDrive had a use (other than as an annoyance) until I had an issue with my file server, but also, I think we need to think about where and how we're storing our data. Having a good backup strategy is part of that plan. Read the full article

Windows Microsoft OneDrive — Remove It
UPDATE: Nov 19, 2024 : Apparently, Microsoft has us all screwed now. Because when you unlink your Windows PC from onedrive and uninstall onedrive — guess what happens….!!!! You no longer have access to previous document versions in case your current Word or Excel version is corrupted — or deleted by mistake (and you’ve cleared the recycle bin)…. Without onedrive, it is now painfully difficult…
