Tech product guides trying to troubleshoot your issues: lol have you tried turning it off and turning it on again 🧐 I'm not going to read any of the things you said you did, if it doesn't work then get fucked. Go to settings and click this option that you said isn't even there anymore
Reddit: here's some actual helpful suggestions on where to find settings that can fix your problem. We're more reliable than google search. Except for when we just tell you to buy new hardware instead of trying to fix your problem
Some obscure tech blog article from 7 years ago: i *google ad* gotchu *google ad* *google ad* *troubleshooter you never knew existed* *google ad* *solution to your problem*
#tell me why i just spent the last four hours troubleshooting issues caused by NOT PLUGGING IN ESSENTIAL CABLES#in my defense i havent worked on the internals of a pc in seven years#but goddamn it was infuriating that the solution to my problems was to plug in a cable three times in a row#it's almost like i didnt have unnecessary cables in there and was keeping the extra one for a reason#but of course the fucking product site wont tell you this#i had to figure out i was missing the goddamn power cable from a youtube video on the bluetooth card installation#and before that i had to plug in a cable that my brother (the person who GAVE ME THIS MOTHERBOARD) said was unnecessary#like HOW did your computer function. mister sir this thing froze on startup without the cpu power supplement cable#extra support my ass#i would love it if msi motherboard installation guides mentioned the bluetooth cable too but noooo#may god help you if you ever have a bluetooth issue because ive had them plenty of times and they are fucking impossible to fix#this is why i quit robotics LMAO#anyways. rant over my pc is built now and the new setup is sooo pretty.#my brother did one thing right with this motherboard and that was installing ram with rgb leds 🥰#rainbow hardware my beloved#my old motherboard had these gorgeous leds and then they just stopped working :c i want more#at least this giant desktop is off my floor now. a tour group apparently was here while i wasn't on monday#(super pissed about that btw. if it happens again i will be tearing the office a new one bc we weren't even notified)#like i kicked that thing plenty just trying to walk around my room. it was right by the door. god wont save you if you break my shit#if someone else kicked that thing while in my apartment when i wasn't here. hoo boy#ok that's enough it's 6am and i finished my cocoa espresso three hours ago. i have two athletic classes today i need to sleep#imaginechats#<- new tag!! i might start rambling more#bc i love never shutting the fuck up 😄#it is a play on imaginecat btw if anyone was wondering. i go by that occasionally as a play on imaginealpha#less formal more cute nickname type thing

You can also install the program Classic Shell.
Tumblr media
Every single one of my computers has had it installed for years. It lets you reskin your start menu, task bar, and file explorer windows back to OG, 2000, XP, or Win7 style. It’s perfect and I refuse to use anything but, because the new start menu shit is HORRIBLE and has been for years.
The OG program is for up to Windows 10 and is no longer being updated. It still works wonderfully though.
For Windows 11 though it seems to have been adopted by someone else and is available over on Github under the name Open Shell. I haven’t needed to use it as all my computers are still on Win10, but it’s backed by the original creators so it’s probably a-ok.
A boy can dream, can't he?

I use Linux as my main OS and I'm a huge nerd. I have a pretty large DVD collection. I don't trust those DVDs not to break or rot, so I've backed up many of them. So last night, I was watching Jaws with some friends and backing up The Matrix in the background. I got an error and didn't pay attention. Jaws was on, I'm busy. And then I got another error.
Root has zero storage left
What?
Ok, so for those who don't know, because of the way that SSDs write, it's generally a good idea to never fill them fully, or they start to slow down, so I saw this and knew something was wrong. I have 1TB of storage on root (roughly 1000GB), and made sure to leave at least 100GB empty. What could have caused this?
I opened up a program that scans for data and visualizes it for the user. It's very useful if you're scared about what's causing issues.
It's about to get a little technical, bear with me.
Turns out my /var/ folder had over 100GB of storage taken up today. Specifically the log files.
I search for the highest one and there are four log files that take up 50GB EACH.
Inside those log files is a singular error.
There was an issue reading sr0
SR0 is the device that my optical drive is bound to.
But this singular error hadn't taken up over 100GB alone. It was reported over, and over, and over, and over again. There were over 300,000 reports of the same error in the same second. So either there was a major logging bug, or, my computer attempted to connect to the drive, got an error, and reported it every single tick. That means, the insanely fast times a computer can load something. It was writing an error as fast as the computer could possibly handle it. Over the span of a couple of minutes, it had written the error over a million times.
The Matrix tried to escape The Matrix. This was them staging a coup, I know it. And they were close, but I emptied those logs too fast and got my storage back.
Anyways. Lesson? Uh, don't ignore errors I guess. I mean, I will continue to ignore errors when I don't want to deal with it, but you really shouldn't.

PEARL SHIMEJI FOR YOUR COMPUTER
remember to install java, pearl feeds off of it (just don't give her any after midnight).
to free pearl from her pokeball, extract the ZIP file and double-click on the "shimeji-ee.jar" file. refer to the readme for further configuration and troubleshooting, but don't hesitate to ask me for help if you're having trouble getting her working!
please do not leave pearl unattended for too long, she is nefarious (aka the shimeji will multiply out of control and potentially crash your pc)

Ah well. Benchmarking the gpu and cpu with AIDA64 is telling me that it's a cpu issue. Unless the newer i7's are supposed to start softly whistle and buzz when under heavy stress. Also temps spiked to 100C for a few seconds during that so yikes lmao. Curiously the temps or high stress on it doesn't seem to be the cause of the random reboots, which continue to happen whenever. But I guess it doesn't take much for there to be wrong in the hardware to get all sorts of weird issues. I'll be sending this thing back before the weekend. I am genuinely curious to hear back from them to determine the issue, altho my money is definitely on the cpu now, esp since everything else seems to be working just fine. The support customer service has been really nice too, they are actually listening to what i think based on what i've done and giving me stuff to try out before simply saying dont touch it just send it back etc. and I think i've learned a few new troubleshooting tricks along all this, which is always nice.
Also i found a place that sells used, business leasing machines, and also had a payment plan option, so i ordered some old and crusty desktop for a hundo to serve me in the meantime, so I don't end up losing my mind and blowing up my phone lmao. I am assuming the warranty fix is going to take at least a few weeks, not counting the shipping service times. So nice that i took the next few weeks off just for getting the new pc all set up and get some personal work done, lmao. I guess the crosstitch is gonna get done a lot more for a while. Who knows, maybe the writing bug will bite me and i'll finally fix and add some more stuff to the comic story. Last time i even opened the document was like 9months ago :'D
Well, since things are not allowed to go too smoothly, I do seem to have a problem with the new pc. it restarts randomly and I have been going through crossing out the reasons why it happens for the past few days and well... if doing a fresh windows install and not updating all the drivers for shit doesn't work either, I think I'm looking at either psu or a motherboard issue :) psu i could deal with but motherboard would be problematic in so many ways, please don't be that.

Barbara Gordon's Coding & Computer Cram School is a popular YouTube series. Tucker Foley is a star student.
Barbara Gordon's Cram School posts free online courses for both coding and computer engineering. Think Crash Course in terms of entertainment, but college lecture in terms of depth. Hundreds of thousands of viewers flock to it— students who missed a class, people looking to add new skills to a resume, even simple hobbyists. It’s a project Barbara’s proud of.
Sometimes, when she wants to relax, she’ll even hop in the comments and spend an afternoon troubleshooting a viewer’s project with them.
User “Fryer-Tuck” has especially interesting ones. Barbara finds herself seeking out his comments, checking in on whatever this crazy kid is making next. An app for collecting GPS pings and assembling them on a map in real-time, an algorithm that connects geographic points to predict something’s movement taking a hundred other variables into account, simplified versions of incredibly complex homemade programs so they can run on incredibly limited CPU’s.
(Barbara wants to buy the kid a PC. It seems he’s got natural talent, but he keeps making reference to a PDA. Talk about 90’s! This guy’s hardware probably predates his birth.)
She chats with him more and more, switching to less public PM threads, and eventually, he opens up. His latest project, though, is not something Barbara has personal experience with.
FT: so if you found, hypothetically, a mysterious glowing substance that affects tech in weird and wacky ways that could totally have potential but might be vaguely sentient/otherworldly…. what would you do and how would you experiment with it. safely, of course. and hypothetically
BG: I’d make sure all my tests were in disposable devices and quarantined programs to keep it from infecting my important stuff. Dare I ask… how weird and wacky is it?
FT: uhhh. theoretically, a person composed of this substance once used it to enter a video game. like physical body, into the computer, onto the screen? moving around and talking and fighting enemies within the game?
FT: its been experimented with before, but not on any tech with a brain. just basic shields and blasters and stuff, its an energy source. also was put in a car once
FT: i wanna see how it affects software, yk? bc i already know it can. mess around and see how far i can push it
BG: […]
FT: … barbara?
BG: Sorry, thinking. Would you mind sharing more details? You said “blasters?”
Honestly. Kid genius with access to some truly wacky materials and even wackier weapons, she needs to start a file on him before he full sends to either hero or villain.
[OR: Tucker is a self-taught hacker, but if he were to credit a teacher, he'd name Barbara Gordon's Coding & Computer Cram School! He's even caught the attention of Dr. Gordon herself. She's full of sage advice, and with how she preaches the value of a good VPN, he's sure she's not pro-government. Maybe she'll help him as he studies the many applications of ecto-tech!]

definitely one of the most difficult moments of my professional career was when i was doing tech support for [REDACTED]'s automated biomed research lab and like. hang on lemme greentext this
>tell them i can fix this issue in half an hour with a remote support session (aka Teamviewer)
>"you want to... control our computers???? over the internet????? like some kind of HACKER???????"
>their IT submits my request to upper management and after two weeks they reluctantly allow me to get remote access to their systems
>by logging into a virtual machine using a 20-digit password and then using a specific program inside of that virtual machine
>while sharing my screen with someone from their IT team the entire time
>finally get remote access to the PC with the issue
>go to open log files to start troubleshooting
>ERROR: User does not have read permissions.
>what the fuck
>ask their IT guy why it's saying that
>"...because we don't want you looking at our stuff, duh?"
>take deep breath before calmly explaining that i need to open files in order to fix their problem
>IT guy submits my request to upper management
>after another week i go through the whole process again but can actually open the log file this time
>cool, it's exactly the issue i thought it was and i know exactly how to solve it
>open the relevant settings file, change a single number, hit Save
>ERROR: User does not have write permissions.
>what the FUCK
>ask IT guy how i'm supposed to fix their system if i can't change literally anything on it
>takes 20 minutes of arguing to get him to admit that maybe i need write access
>he submits the request to upper management
>a week goes by
>upper management denies it
>says i can just verbally tell the IT guy on the call what to type and he'll do it for me
>deep breaths. deep breaths.
>start third remote session
>go to open the relevant .log file in notepad, which isn't the default program it opens with for some reason
>they fucking disabled right clicking
>[REDACTED] has a $118 billion market cap btw
>manage to walk the IT guy through using the command line (which he had never seen before and was scared of) to edit the relevant file
>three weeks go by
>new support ticket in my inbox
>"why didn't your fix fix this completely unrelated issue?"
>they still won't give me write access
>VP of [REDACTED] yells at me in our weekly meeting for taking so long to fix a third unrelated issue they never submitted a ticket for and is also not actually an "issue" but an intended feature of our software that they don't like
>i went to college for this

So ive been using linux for a good while now, and its now officially my daily driver. Windows is now permabenched in a removed hhd in a drawer unless something awful happens. (Good riddance, havent truly enjoyed windows since xp)
And from this I think that people urging others to move to linux are not doing so in the correct way.
Instead of trying to push a friendly distro and insisting it will work for everything and everyone, instead check if the hardware they are using specifically is good for linux and if so what families.
One computer will be a breeze with any distro, another could have a few quirks but be basically fine, however another of the same year and manufacturer could be an uphill battle thats straight up unusable even for someone who knows how to do the kernel edit workarounds for all but specific distros, if that.
My desktop took linux mint like a dream, 100% painless with no fucking about to make it work and even no need for an ethernet cable to get things started. My dinosaur laptop (may it rest in peace after other components died) had a few issues but also worked very well with little effort with mint. My current junk laptop is an uphill battle that will require arch AND edits to the kernel paremeters to work without being filled with screen flashing and full system freezes at random and im still gearing up the gumption to give it another few attempts to actually pull it off.
Each of these computers is a VERY different experience, and if your prospective switcher is using a computer that doesnt play well, its NOT going to work, they will get frustrated, and they will give up. They have to work with what they have.
Instead of going right to telling them to switch and that anything is good, Encourage people to search up their pc+linux compatibility if they are looking to switch to determine if its viable for a newbie who doesnt want to struggle, then offer a distro that has a live usb/dvd version if possible for them to test without install, and a big enough userbase that troubleshooting is as painless as possible.
If its a laptop, archwiki has lists of those by maker (linked in the page given) with notes on what has been tested in that family of linux.
This, I think, above all, is the most important thing when trying to get people to switch:
MAKE SURE THEIR HARDWARE IS GOOD FOR IT
Not just the pc, but the peripherals too; their mouse, their mic, their webcam, their keyboard- these things are not always supported well.
Linux can be fast, easy, and really comfortable and painless with little to no troubleshooting or tedious workarounds to get your stuff to work; but you have to be using the right hardware.
Yes, make sure you have alternative programs lined up that are actually good (stop reccing gimp when krita is a way better P$ alternative for people trying to draw digitally), and maybe consider talking about how to run wine in a newbie friendly way for things they might need for work reasons that dont work on linux normally(and accept that it might not work even with wine), but above all, make sure that its not just being phrased as 'a you problem' when it might be their system that is the issue there.
For prospective switchers that tried but gave up because of glitches or freezes or things otherwise not working: It wasnt you being bad at computers. Sometimes it just doesnt work with that hardware well and there is nothing you can do. People dont warn you about this, but its a very real issue.
If you still want to try linux, when you eventually get a new computer in the future, look for one that seems to be supported by linux well- some pcs even come with linux preinstalled for you even (dell does this with ubuntu and ubuntu has skins that looks windows esque). Asking specifically for linux compatible or linux preinstalled computers signals to developers to make more computers that work with linux, and makes it easier to get linux friendly stuff.
If not, there are windows 11 neutering tools out there in the wild that are very useful and are a plenty fine alternative to switching. You should only switch if you want to switch.

The tiefling bachelors troubleshooting a PC:
Inspired by my own computer woes. 🫠
--------------------------------------------
Zevlor: He's a PC god for Linux and DOS, he hasn't got a fucking clue what to do with newer operating systems.
---
Dammon: Immediately takes it to a PC repair shop. He knows better than to mess around with things he isn't proficient with— as a smith he's had to repair the mistakes of many a layman "fixing" things they don't understand.
---
Rolan: Proudly professes that he knows how to fix the issue, and he actually does know how to fix it! Except Windows is doing what it does best: frustrating the user.
For several hours he's been battling a problem that should've taken no more than 5 minutes to resolve.
No. He will not take it to a repair shop, damnit! He KNOWS how to fix this!
At some point you hear him yell "I NEED THE ADMINISTRATOR'S PERMISSION TO DELETE THIS FILE!? I AM THE FUCKING ADMINISTRATOR!!!"

"Just switch to Linux" 1. Why is this never accompanied by a "for dummies" type explainer/tutorial. You're tech savvy, so you think everyone else can be just like *snaps fingers*? Jerk. 2. I don't want to have to sweet talk my computer anytime I want it to do something 3. I want my games (the primary thing I use a PC for outside of word processing) to just work and not have troubleshooting tips that read like wizard spells.
