Batman turned 85 over the weekend, and this month is also the 18th anniversary of LEGO Batman. What better time to revisit one of my favorite Bat-builds — this wonderfully wacky statue from our "Adventures of Max" series, designed by @getwithamnow 🦇❤️

I designed, rigged, and animated a test for a character in an animated short series pitch @paganomation and I co-created.

Maybe when all our other projects are done we’ll get around to this 😂

This character has a California surfer vibe so I used audio from Cousin Cody of the 90’s TGIF sitcom “Step By Step.” Show still holds up until like season 6. Background & prop photography by @paganomation .

Animation may look easy to an outsider looking in, but in actuality it is an incredibly labor intensive and demanding process. It’s not the kind of art you can just “wing” and hope for the best. Every second of production counts, so before you begin a project you need to know what you’re doing before you do it. Pre-production is the name animators give to the planning period for a project that takes place before any actual animation can start. And whether the project is an independent venture, a collaborative effort, a commissioned piece, to be aired on TV, confined to the internet, bound for the festival circuit, or any combination of these, the initial idea is likely to morph and change hundreds of times during this process. In this discussion, we will discuss where ideas start and how they take form, and how that process differs depending on the nature of the project.

John Dilworth is an Academy Award nominated director based in New York whose work has appeared on CBS, Showtime, HBO, FOX, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, MTV, Canal +, and Arte. His films have been featured in museum programs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. He is the founder of Stretch Films, Inc., one of the leading animation design and production studios in New York City.   His 1995 animated short film THE CHICKEN FROM OUTER SPACE, sponsored by Hanna-Barbera and Cartoon Network, was nominated for an Academy Award, an Annie Award, and a Cable ACE Award. Re-named "COURAGE THE COWARDLY DOG", it was developed as a television series in 1998, with Dilworth serving as executive producer, director, and co-writer on all 52 half-hour episodes as well as voicing numerous characters.

David Pagano is the head of the operation at Paganomation, a New York based production studio founded in 2006 that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible with stop motion animation and LEGO bricks. Their creative team blends humor, artistry, and retro fun; crafting memorable films with something for everyone. They use live-action, animation, photography, and computer graphics to produce music videos, commercials, tutorials, and short films. Their work has been seen on Nickelodeon, Disney XD, ABC News, and LEGO.com, as well as in The Wall Street Journal, BrickJournal magazine, and in “The LEGO Movie”.

Aaron Augenblick opened the animation studio Augenblick Studios in Brooklyn, NY in 1999. Notable productions include Ugly Americans (Comedy Central), Wonder Showzen (MTV), Golan the Insatiable (Fox), Superjail (Adult Swim), and Shorties Watchin' Shorties (Comedy Central). Augenblick Studios' independent cartoons have been seen in film festivals throughout the world. Their short film Golden Age was an official selection of the Sundance Film Festival and won the grand prize for best film at the Ottawa International Animation Festival. Augenblick Studios is one of the leading independent animation companies in the world, well known for their unique brand of cartoon comedy

Jimbo Matison is an award winning creator of entertainment content possessing over 20 years experience in digital, tv shows, national commercials, print and more. He has expertise in encompassing all roles of a project from ideation thru launch; conceptualizing, writing, directing, designing, live action, animating, scoring, and editing. He's done this on over 100 comedy episodes for 5 networks, online and broadcast, bags of eclectic spots, the launches of many successful online strategies of evil – and he's still not sick of it!

Moderator: Nina Balton graduated from Pratt in 2016 and has been lending her help to ANNY since early 2017. She is in charge of Animation Nights New York's Animator Interviews series where she conducts in-depth interviews with ANNY-featured filmmakers. In 2014 she started The Toon Goons with her brother and mutual close friend. The Toon Goons is a podcast hosted by fans of animation about animated works. They feature one show or movie an episode and discuss it in as great of detail as they can. They also discuss current happenings and news within the industry as they become aware of them. Most importantly, they try to highlight why these works are important and worth watching, though they're not always super serious about things.
