“Amphibia” Emphasizes Chosen Families and Self-Acceptance

What if a Thai-American girl wakes up and finds herself in a world filled with talking frogs? Amphibia answers that question. Anne meets new friends, enemies, and tries to figure out her purpose in this strange world.

Reprinted from The Geekiary, my History Hermann WordPress blog (it will be published on there on Dec. 26), and Wayback Machine. This was the forty-second article I wrote for The Geekiary. This post was originally published on June 25, 2022.

Amphibia is an animated adventure-fantasy-comedy series by Matt Braly, an animator of Thai descent. He is also known for directing episodes of Gravity Falls and Big City Greens.

As a warning, this recommendation discusses spoilers for all three seasons of Amphibia.

Amphibia centers around a 13-year-old Thai-American girl, Anne Boonchuy (Brenda Song), who is transported by a music box to another world with her two best friends, Sasha Waybright (Anna Akana) and Marcy Wu (Haley Tju). In this wild land, filled with marshes and tropical environments, she meets talking frogs and other creatures, including a family of frogs named the Plantars.

This family is headed by the overbearing and traditional grandfather, Hop Pop (Bill Farmer). He has two kids-of-sorts: an excitable frog named Sprig (Justin Felbinger) and a spunky pollywog named Polly (Amanda Leighton). All of them live on a farm of their own in the close-knit town of Wartwood. As Anne bonds with the Plantars, she learns what friendship and being heroic means.

This all-ages animated series is filled with diversity, especially from its characters and voice actors. The latter are of Chinese, Indonesian, Pakistani, Japanese, and Thai descent. The show compliments this with wonderful animation, music, and background art.

Unsurprisingly, the series has been been nominated for four Annie Awards, one Daytime Emmy, and a GLAAD Media Award since it began airing in 2019. It includes some voice actors I'm familiar with, like Tress MacNeille and John DiMaggio, who voice characters in Disenchantment, as well as well-known gay actor George Takei.

Amphibia is more than a series centered on a girl who is adopted by a family of talking frogs. While there is the classic conflict of good vs. evil, there is also a focus on family separation, self-acceptance, and trauma. As I wrote previously, all of the main protagonists have trauma on same level or another, as the friendship between all three of them faces hardships and strains.

This is all mixed together with fantasy and sci-fi elements, and even occasionally situational comedy acts. These complex characters are written in such a way that you become invested and concerned about them, even after ending the series. The series also has plotlines focused on human and animal experimentation, and robots.

This series is part of a recent set of diverse Disney animated series. Others include The Ghost and Molly McGee, a supernatural fantasy, and will-be-ending horror comedy and fantasy The Owl House. Upcoming series such as Iwaju, Moana: The Series, Tiana, Cookies & Milk, Hailey's On It!, and Marvel's Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur portend a continuation of this focus.

In the case of Amphibia, Braly based the series on his trips to Bangkok, Thailand where he thought he was an outsider. He also was inspired by video games like The Legend of Zelda and Chrono Trigger. In previous interviews he said he wanted to make the main character a Thai-American because there were few Thai protagonists in TV series or films that he watched as a kid. As a result, he has said he become influenced by the Mortal Kombat and Sonic the Hedgehog franchises.

In a December 2021 interview, Braly noted the themes of immigration, alienation, and xenophobia drawn from his own experiences. All of these themes are deeply integrated into the series. Some of this is heavily informed, according to Braly, by the 1990s series, Pepper Ann. Braly also noted that frogs were chosen for the series because they are metaphor for change and their connection to Thai culture.

Amphibia is rightly praised for illustrating issues like emotional manipulation, bullying, and delightful characters. The series could also be praised for broadening "ethnic-racial representations" like Craig of the Creek and Elena of Avalor. This is something that groups like the socially conservative family-oriented non-profit, Common Sense Media, would praise.

A 2021 report from the organization notes that when people of color are portrayed stereotypically, it causes harmful views to be promoted among White audiences. This is coupled with underrepresentation of specific groups, such as Latine and Indigenous people, and misrepresentation of others.

Little mentioned is LGBTQ representation in Amphibia. Although it isn't as direct as other recent series, like Dead End: Paranormal Park or The Owl House, Braly stated that in the show's finale, they left it open as to whether someone thinks of Sasha, Marcy, and Anne romantically or not, as he loves shipping. He called it the "greatest expression of love for characters."

This gives queer fans who ship Marcanne (Marcy and Anne), Sasharcy (Sasha and Marcy), Sashanne (Sasha and Anne), or even all three in a relationship together some solace. This the case even if this so-called "Calamity Trio" are only be "gal pals" in the show's canon.

Even so, Sasha was hinted as bisexual in the show's final episode, and confirmed as such by Braly, as I noted in an earlier post. Her voice actress, Akana, is bisexual herself. She voiced Daisy in magical girl esque Magical Friendship Girl Squad: Origins and Magical Girl Friendship Squad. In the case of Daisy, Akana argued that Daisy was bisexual. However, other crew members argued she was a lesbian, and possibly trans, leading to confusion among fans.

Coming back to Amphibia, Sasha joins other LGBTQ characters such as Frodrick Toadstool and Toadie who were confirmed as a gay couple by the show's creator. More significantly is Yunan (Zahra Fazal) and Lady Olivia (Michelle Dockery) as lesbian couple. There's also Ally and Jess who run an Internet video channel together. Their colors are based off the bisexual and pansexual flags.

It is also implied that Mr. X, voiced by RuPaul, is gay, and there are some other minor LGBTQ characters. Similar to Sasha, the sexual identities of these characters are never directly stated. Mr. X is an effeminate FBI agent assisted by a silent assistant named Jenny. After Anne and frog family escape to Amphibia, Anne's birth family convince Mr. X to hear them out and to be on the same side against Andrias. This results in the military and FBI assisting Anne and her friends in the final episode.

The relationship of Yunan and Olivia, was embraced by reviewers like Jade King, who calls herself "TheGamer’s Queen of Gay Cartoons." Braly told King that the ship of these two characters was their favorite ship. He called it "very organic" and "awesome." Fans were jubilant about the news, and fully embraced it. It undoubtedly helped that Fazal was inspired by the protagonist of Darkwing Duck in voicing the character.

Considering that the final episode has a ten year time-skip, it makes the series ripe for a possible spin-off or continuation that happens in that time skip, with different protagonists than this series. While some are conflicted about a spin-off, the show could go a route a la Steven Universe Future, focusing on the aftermath of a victory, with Anne, Marcy, and Sasha having to pick up the pieces.

All three seasons of Amphibia are currently streaming on Disney+, YouTube TV, and Prime Video.

with respect, while i think it's inappropriate and racist to assume palestinian men are the same as any other muslim man, i WOULD say the behavior of the arab and/or muslim diaspora in the west (not strictly male either) has not exactly dispelled the idea that there is widespread for terrorist action among that population. just because we don't like it doesn't make it not true.

this doesn't change my pro-palestine position on the israel/palestine conflict but i do have a strongly negative opinion of most of the (overwhelmingly, non-palestinian) diaspora and their behavior in this context. they are just as much out of touch westerners living a cushy life and begging to see blood.

My problem with the post that (I believe) inspired this ask is the racist coalition of all Middle Eastern cultures into one monolith. Equating all Islamic terrorist organisations with each other due to a lack of understanding of the differences between cultures and countries is a big enough problem when it comes to fighting extremist ideology and terror groupes, nevermind when it comes to conversations about an ongoing ethnic cleansing and genocide. Bringing up a 2-decade old Al-Qaeda, an Afghan-Pakistani terror organisation, attack on the U.S. in a conversation about the atrocities committed against Palestinian women as some kind of gotcha is incredibly racist, and I don’t think I need to mention how tone deaf the timing is. Al-Qaeda does not exist, and has never existed, in Palestine.

If we were to have a conversation about the Arab and Muslim diaspora in the west and the effect of their actions on the widespread image of the Middle East among western populations, that is not the place to start it. And, more importantly, this is not the time to have such a conversation. I understand that western cultures have become increasingly individualistic, but that is not the case in the global east. We are in a state of collective mourning. We’ve cancelled all national celebrations, events, and demonstrations. My med school is cancelling all graduation activities apart from the official ceremony to hand us our degrees and have us swear the Hippocratic oath, which will be held with no music or press coverage, and without an after party. Marriage ceremonies are being held in silence with no wedding parties. Birthday celebrations are being held off. The black ribbon of mourning has been placed on all tv channels and will not be removed until 3 days after a ceasefire is enacted. Our neighbours are going through a catastrophe, there are manners to be observed. We don’t even put the tv on too loud if a neighbour is sick, nevermind dead or dying. When our neighbours, our family, our people are being massacred in front of our eyes with the sanctions of the entire world, we mourn with them and we mind our manners while we do it. That is all to say, when the entire region is in a state of mourning is absolutely the least appropriate timing for this kind of conversation, despite its importance.

When brown people aren’t being massacred by the thousands, and displaced by the hundreds of thousands, we can talk about the behaviour of the brown diaspora in the west. Until then, we mourn.

I apologise if I’m not entirely coherent, I’m very sick at the moment, quite literally in the middle of finals for my last year of med school, and completely overwhelmed with the insanity going on in the world at the moment, especially after Egypt was targeted twice. Our government had to double the rolling blackout duration to two hours a day after Israel decided to cut off all fuel exports to Egypt to put pressure on the government to agree to Israel’s plan of displacing over 2 million Palestinians into Sinai. So, things haven’t been great here either and people are preparing for the non-zero chance that our hand could be forced into war.

This is the first full song Nino sings in the Anonymous Noise anime/manga. Something about how messy it sounds really stuck with me and I am just living for these vibes. I know rock music totally plays against the aesthetic I have going but I want so badly to one day sing this song.

Oh boy! I have a long, long list of books, movies, tv shows, anime, manga, and light novels that I toss around as recommendations to friends. I usually like to tailor my reccs based on what I know people like but since I'm not entirely sure about your tastes I'll give a few of the ones I know most poeple enjoy.

Oscar (1991): a movie with Sylvester Stalone and it's a comedy so you really can't go wrong with this

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun: either the manga or anime, both are amazing imo and the comedy is unparalleled

Summertime Rendering: honestly the best mystery manga I've ever read and it got a boppin anime adaptation just this year, go in with as few spoilers as possible

Pandora Hearts: please read this manga, if not for the plot then just for the art because Mochizuki Jun improves so much over the course of this series and it's absolutely stunning

86 eighty-six: watch the anime and if you're feeling it read the light novel or just wait it out for a second season because this will definitely get one

2.43 Seiin Koukou Danshi Volleyball: okay so I know this is the less popular volleyball anime but I like this one more

IDOLiSH7: i love these idol boys and this is the best idol game turned anime adaptation out there I think

IDOLY PRIDE: the other really awesome idol anime, I love this more than words can say and it's just a good time all around

Ao no Exorcist: read the manga and just avoid the anime please, the manga is much better

Fruits Basket: I watched the 2019 series and I didn't know what I was getting into at all but damn it was worth it, this anime is perfect

Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru: I clearly like a lot of sports anime lol, but nah this one is good and has like warm and fuzzy friendship vibes but an older cast so it's a bit more serious

Kono Oto Tomare: music anime about a traditional Japanese instrument with great friendship and romance, I loved this so much that I bought the CD and I will one day play it for my wedding

Ya Boy Kongming: it's got great music and is hilarious, you could not ask for more imo

The Raven Boys: this was a fun time to read, like it had friendship and romance and all that teenage angst but also treasure hunting and supernatural powers

Percy Jackson: someone has probably already recced this tbh

All Our Yesterdays: the only valid time travel novel imo

Here Lies Daniel Tate: there's murder, there's mystery, what more could you want lol

The Devil is A Part-timer: watch season 1 of the anime and if you want to continue past that hit me up because things get messy and your enjoyment will depend on which character was your fave

The Last Fallen Star: a korean mythology middle grade novel

Into The Spiderverse: do I need to say more lol

The Good Place: again a comedy tv show, I do love comedy

Gilmore Girls: this is honestly a fascinating study in character development and writing

Ms Marvel: as a pakistani muslim this tv show was a mood in many ways

Beyond disco: the Pakistani Brummie siblings who made a lost 80s synth-pop classic

Nermin Niazi and Feisal Mosleh were teenage immigrants blending their Pakistani musical heritage with Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode – and their punchy disco LP has been rescued from obscurity.

Opening its doors in 1970, Birmingham’s Zella Studios played home to a who’s who of the city’s musical greats: Black Sabbath, Band of Joy, the Spencer Davis Group. But the Bristol Street institution was also home to one of the most remarkable and unfairly overlooked albums of the 1980s: Disco Se Aagay, by teenage British-Pakistani sibling duo Feisal Mosleh and Nermin Niazi.

“When I look back now I’m surprised at how much confidence we had,” Niazi says. “I remember walking in and feeling absolutely at home. The smell of the studio stays with me even now. There’s something very comforting and secure about it.”

Recorded in the summer of 1984, Disco Se Aagay – released under Niazi’s name – sought to combine the siblings’ Pakistani musical heritage with the disco, new wave and synthpop that enchanted them in the UK. They married Urdu lyrics and post-punk ingenuity, Hindustani melodic scales and state-of-the-art synthesisers, to make an LP that perfectly harmonised east and west – but failed in both markets. “Even after all these years I haven’t really come across anything else that’s similar to it,” her brother Mosleh admits. “And that includes music we’ve made ourselves! It’s a very unique snapshot of a certain time in our lives and our intake of both cultures.”

Now, 37 years on from its release and instant obscurity, Disco Se Aagay is finally re-emerging. Discostan, a radio show and club space dedicated to celebrating the music of a region they term as Swana (south and west Asia and north Africa), is reissuing the album. Founder Arshia Haq recalls stumbling upon it in a second-hand record store on New York’s Lower East Side. “When I first saw the record sleeve I thought to myself: is this gonna be good, or so-bad-it’s-good?” she laughs. “When I dropped the needle on the record I was blown away by a feeling of: what is this? It’s in my native language but there’s also this new-wave-synth, kind-of-bedroom feeling to it and it’s a little bit more experimental than other south Asian music that I’d heard.”

“It’s a British classic,” adds Discostan’s Jeremy Loudenback. “It’s a record that should be re-evaluated and celebrated and brought into the conversation when we think of that great heyday of British new wave.”

Born in Lahore, Mosleh and Niazi are the children of Pakistani musical royalty – their father a prolific Lollywood composer, Moslehuddin, and their mother an adored singer, Nahid Niazi, who would often perform in films scored by her husband; together they became the nation’s first ever children’s TV hosts. “Some of my earliest memories of Pakistan are being in film and TV studios,” Mosleh recalls. “Then we came to England when I was six years old, and it felt very different not having our large extended family around us.”

Settling in Birmingham in the mid-1970s, music continued to be the backbone of family life. When their parents weren’t touring the UK (performing at London’s Royal Albert Hall and Barbican among a swathe of notable venues), they were rehearsing in the family home or hosting the biggest names in Pakistani pop for their visits to the UK. “I remember being young and sitting with very famous people like [south Asian pop star] Nazia Hassan,” says Mosleh. “We thought this was quite normal until we got to a certain age and it dawned on us that our parents were slightly unusual.”

On the other side were myriad European influences (“groups like Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Japan and even Abba”) that had just as big an impact on their sound. When they finally took to the studio to record Disco Se Aagay – Niazi aged 14 and Mosleh aged 19 – the idea was to bridge these two worlds. Translating to “beyond disco”, the album is a candid expression of the dual personality millions of members of the diaspora are forced to address during their teenage years. The Urdu lyrics and south Asian pop stylings represent the comfort and familiarity of their upbringing; the synth-driven energy signifies the allure of western culture and desire to break the mould.

With Niazi singing and Mosleh responsible for an array of instruments and hardware, a liberated quality permeates the record. “We were doing a lot of crazy things when we were just school kids,” Mosleh enthuses. “And we were using the same stuff that some of the top bands were using at that time: the X7, the DX1, the DX5, some of the Yamaha and Roland series.”

Laid down in Zella Studios, the standout track Sari Sari Raat (translating to All Night Long) channels the punchy dancefloor energy of Italo disco and hi-NRG; Dil Mein Dil Mein (In My Heart) has all the glossy synth opulence of Spandau Ballet; Hum Tum (You and Me), the album’s most experimental track, weaves and overlaps Niazi’s vocals in a way that was completely unique for the time.

Despite the abundance of talent, innovation and youthful exuberance, they lament the absence of any real promotion or marketing campaign from Oriental Star, the local label that released the album. But as Mosleh says: “Even if it had got UK plays I think people would’ve been asking: what is this? It didn’t fit into the traditional Indian and Pakistani sounds nor into the UK pop of the time because of the language.”

When Niazi returned to school after the summer holidays she was reluctant to divulge her creative endeavours with any of her classmates. “I just thought, ‘They’re not going to understand.’ The 80s was a different world to the broad-minded one we live in now.”

The album did generate interest in their native Pakistan, resulting in TV appearances and a flurry of magazine front covers, but there was also a backlash from some of the more conservative pockets of society. “I was a 14-year-old Asian girl singing about love,” says Niazi, “which some people interpreted as me encouraging children to date.”

Mosleh adds: “The Islamisation of Pakistan had started and that’s where this negativity came from. I’m kind of surprised that a lot of conservatism has remained in these communities – it always seemed very backwards in the way they were treating music. Nevertheless, we ignored it as we thought we were doing something great.”

The LP was to be their only release, not because of religious pressure, but rather life getting in the way. Mosleh started a new life in the US while Niazi, after dabbling in TV and radio after leaving school, eventually joined the Metropolitan Police in London, where she has remained ever since. “It’s true that life just takes over but if I’m honest, deep down, I lost a little bit of hope due to our album pretty much disappearing into obscurity,” she concedes. She says the experience left her “feeling like I was in this no man’s land in the middle, and I found it very difficult throughout my teens. But as I got older I realised that it’s not actually a battle. It’s about choosing and embracing the positive elements from both sides.” A tactic, of course, that she and her brother had already mastered.

I grew up in an area called Laygate, South Shields in the north-east of England. It’s near the docks where a lot of Arabs worked from the 1920s. My granddad Mohammed arrived around 1943 from Yemen. He worked as a firefighter in the merchant navy, before becoming a laborer at the docks. It was in South Shields that he met my grandma Amelia, whose dad was from Egypt. They were very much in love and settled in the coastal town. They loved the large Arab community, and everyone stuck together. Sadly, my grandma passed away when my mam was just four so I never had a chance to learn much about my Egyptian heritage, but my granddad talked about her a lot.While my granddad didn’t force his children or grandkids to follow his religion, he was a devout Muslim and wanted us to know about his faith and culture. We lived near the local mosque and he would tell me beautiful stories about when he went to Mecca. He would always cook for us, too – I loved his chicken soup with khubz, which is the best bread in the world. I remember him fasting for Ramadan, and during Eid I would wait for him outside the mosque and say Eid Mubarak to his friends as they came out, and they would gift me a pound coin. It was important to him that I learned how to read and write Arabic, so every Saturday I went to Muslim school. I have fond memories of it. I went from the ages of eight to 10, but I think I was unfortunately too young to understand how important it was to learn. I also went to church every Sunday, but faith-wise I don’t know what I believe in. I think, perhaps, that stems from having so many beliefs and opinions put on me.I had a happy childhood. My primary school was incredibly multicultural – there were a lot of asylum seekers and refugees from all over the world so I just felt a part of it. That changed when I was a teenager and went to secondary school. My granddad passed away and suddenly I felt like I had lost that whole part of me. He was the person I’d go to when I felt down. He made me feel proud of who I was – he was my line of understanding to my Arab heritage. I felt alone. At school, I didn’t fit into any group, and started to experience prejudice and racism. I was one of the very few people of color in the school, so from the off I felt like an outcast.Where I’m from in England, if you weren’t evidently black or white, you were put in this big bowl of one ‘other’ thing. I used to get called the P-word, which I didn’t understand as I’m not Pakistani. I was also called half-caste. During one incident someone pinned me down in the toilets and put a bindi spot on my forehead. There was a complete lack of education and understanding of different races and faiths. It affected my mental health. I became very depressed and it triggered the eating disorder I had throughout school.Looking back, I realize I experienced microaggressions even as a kid, whether it was being part of musicals in my hometown and having white powder put on my face to blend in with the rest of the cast, or not getting cast at all because there were no people of color in the musical. It wasn’t until I moved to London and into a multicultural environment that I realized how messed up it was. I was 18 when I moved, just after I did The X Factor [in 2011]. I went from being the token person of color to being in London, where it didn’t matter. All of a sudden I was thrown into the limelight [with Little Mix], and people didn’t know what I was, so I went along with it. I had suppressed who I was because I wasn’t proud. I had been bullied into thinking I should be ashamed of my identity, so I didn’t talk enough about my heritage in interviews. It makes me sad to think about it now.When I was younger, I didn’t see enough representation of Arabs in magazines or on TV, and when I saw people who looked like my granddad they were always misrepresented. There’s this stereotype of Muslims being terrorists. I regret now that I didn’t talk about it more, but I was young and scared. I’m trying to make up for it now. I’m more open to being that voice for people. I think it comes with being more confident in yourself, and more curious. My mam and me have started looking into our culture more and it’s something that is bringing us closer together. The Black Lives Matter movement and the war in Yemen has triggered a lot of trauma for my mam, who I think suppressed who she was for a long time, too. The past few months have been very eye-opening for us. We’ve talked more than we ever have about race and who we are. As an adult I’m connecting more with my Arab side – it’s a shame that it’s taken me until now to understand that. Being Arab is a beautiful thing. I’m trying to learn more of the language; in fact, during our US tour with Ariana Grande [Little Mix was one of the opening acts on Grande’s Dangerous Woman tour in 2017], I did an online Arabic course. One of my goals is to learn the language so that I can travel more to the Middle East. I get a lot of messages from Arab fans saying that they look up to me and that it’s lovely to see positive representation of an Arab woman in pop culture. The messages were one of the triggers that encouraged me to explore who I really am.When I was young, my grandad used to play Arabic songs for me, and I think it did influence me. When I’m in the recording studio people say they can tell I have Arab heritage because when I do riffs I must subconsciously perform them in an Arabic style, which is lovely. My granddad used to love hearing me sing – that’s definitely one of the main reasons I got into music. One of my favorite memories of him was when I bought him a Mecca-shaped alarm clock that played the call to prayer. He played it and started to cry – it made me realize how powerful music can be.It’s taken me too long to embrace my heritage and I wish I did it sooner. I want people to know that who you are is a beautiful thing – learn about your ancestors and educate yourself on your heritage. It gives you a purpose. It’s important for me to use my platform to be a better person and raise awareness, especially about what is happening now in Yemen. It’s not being talked about enough. I’m striving to be a better role model for my fans and be an artist that I would’ve liked to have seen as a young girl.

Does Tagore belong to home and not world?

Indian fans woke up to a surprise as a video from Pakistani show featuring Rabindra Sangeet “Amaro Porano Jaha Chay” went viral. The footage is from the show “Dil Kya Karay”, where the lead actor Yumna Zaidi is seen crooning the popular Bengali song. Calling it a ‘proud moment’, fans even said that it was ‘heart-warming’ to see the inclusivity in the serial. Have you ever heard the saying “Music has no borders”? The words couldn’t be truer in case of these videos from a Pakistan TV show. They feature the popular Rabindra Sangeet “Amaro Porano Jaha Chay”.

In a country of a million idols and temples—including those for movie stars; a country where taxpayer money is spent on giant statues to politicians—there is something to be said about a culture that bows to a poet. Tagore was a philosopher and a polymath, a nationalist and a political ideologue, an artist and an educationist, but above all, he was a poet. And in celebrating him, we celebrate the spirit of poetry.

Be it Hindu-Muslim relations, women's emancipation, exploitation of nature, development of the village, or his contribution to modern art, Bengal's thinkers and commoners alike marvel at how the man remains relevant even today as his 160th birth anniversary dawns on May 9. Tagore was born in 1861 and lived till the age of 80. He wrote nearly 3,000 songs, set up an experimental school at Santiniketan, and went on to win the Nobel prize in 1913 for his compilation Gitanjali.

Bengalis do not need to read about Rabindranath, he is already flowing in our veins. Non-Bengalis are a different matter. When I was a boy in Calcutta, I remember watching one of my uncles reading the newspaper every morning, shaking his head and saying, ‘These non-Bengalis, I tell you!’ He was not pleased with the news, and he was clear about where the responsibility lay. Therefore, when Hindustan Times asked me to explain Rabindranath to non-Bengalis, I did not undertake the task lightly.

The first thing to understand about Rabindranath is that his shape is very distinctive. He had a strong aesthetic sense, and always art directed himself most beautifully. But he was most often portrayed with a yard long beard and in an ankle length kaftan, in profile, hands behind his back. He is one of the few famous people, along with Einstein and Gandhi, who can be recognized by a silhouette. He was a man in advance, he created his own emoji. As children growing up in Calcutta, long before we read him, we recognised his shape.

The first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913, Rabindranath Tagore’s novels, stories, songs and dramas were acclaimed as well as criticised for their lyricism and colloquialism. Gitanjali, Gora and Ghore-Baire are his best-known works. His compositions were chosen by two nations as national anthems: India's “Jana Gana Mana” and Bangladesh's “Amar Shonar Bangla”.

Tagore has been an inescapable reality for all 250 million Bengali speaking people around the world. He is widely revered all over Bangladesh and in India.  He commands a towering presence in the Bengali speaking world. His literary achievements overshadow anything that happened before him and anything that happened after him in the Bengali literary world. Tagore, in fact, is embedded in the collective psyche of educated Bengalis. The Jorasanko Thakurbari is a living memory of a man whose impact and influence travelled continents and also reminds us why Bengali culture will always be indebted to Rabindranath Tagore. The writer of Indian National Anthem, the writer of Bangladesh's National Anthem, the person to have inspired Sri Lanka's National Anthem with his work, the first Non-European and also the first lyricist to win a Nobel Prize in literature - Rabindranath Tagore. Not just this, he was a renowned poet, painter, writer, composer, and philosopher.  Due to his achievements, Rabindranath Tagore is also known as the 'Bard of Bengal'.

Music is an essential part of any culture, with different types of music being attributed to different cultures. For some, music is a part of entertainment while for some, it is their identity. Some examples of music being a part of their culture would be Ghazzal, a major part of Pakistani Culture, or Rap in USA. Not only is it a part of our culture, but it is a part of our own individual expression as through music, we can present our feelings, our opinions, our own personality. For example, in several romantic songs, the singer presents his/her relationship with the other. While in recent years, globalization has changed many cultures, personal expression and surrounding dynamics/concepts. Different music philosophies have now been mixed, as we can see in the music video of the PSL Anthem “Groove Mera”.

4 different musical cultures are mixing to produce a musical piece. The first one is traditional Punjabi Music, which Naseebo Lal presenting it, a staple cultural music type in Punjab; but it has been influenced from the modern aspect as the graphics of the video was, not traditional-like, but much more contemporary, which meant that cultural expression has been changed due to changing times. Then, pop music is shown by Aima Baig who uniquely presents pop as she uses Urdu as her vocals while more orthodox and pop-related visuals are used. After that, Then, Young Stunners had a segment in which they presented hip-hop, which is a unique type of music, compared to other local types. EDM was also used in several parts; EDM was involved in the traditional music of Naseebo Lal, and again, towards the end of the song, where they had their part.

Furthermore, the music (and the music video) explored a concept that has never been discussed before, which is the equal distribution of gender. For the first time in PSL history, a woman would present in their theme song; furthermore, there were as many women as many males presenting in the theme song, which is symbolic of many things. The first being that it represents Pakistan’s women, who consist of 50% of the country, and the song achieves that. The Pakistani Women’s Cricket Team has been there from 1997 but viewership has been low, but this video encourages viewers to also watch it, alongside men’s cricket. On the other hand, the diversity in the music represents Pakistan too as Pakistan is a place that was made for the minorities and is filled with people with different genders, religions, races, and cultures.

The song also presents the interlinked and bonding between Pakistanis, that how we all are brothers and sisters and we are united. The video beautifully shows how the fans watch cricket together and enjoy it too. Besides, the music too supported this as the lyrics reinforced the fact that crowd enjoy cricket and they are heart and soul of cricket. Another part was regarding how the cricket forum had been changed due to COVID and now, there were no crowds in live matches so it had to be online. The video showed that fans were now viewing on their phones and television rather than in stadiums. Even the lyrics said, “Ab dekha crowd mera groove TV pe” which meant that the singers too emphasized the fact that crowd will now witness cricket from the screens at their homes, a part of the singers’ personal expression.

This can also link with design and art in few other ways. Design and art are both forms of personal creation, as one can produce it independently and is based on your own talent and creativity. Music is also part of it as music is also one’s personal creation and expression and shares the same characteristics with the other 2 topics. Like musician, an artist/designer makes his piece which does resemble his feelings or to represent his own culture. Alongside, they are a major part of one’s culture and can represent it individually; for example, the Mona Lisa, is a major part of the renaissance period and its culture.

IDU, in my opinion, is very important for a student as it can help in their knowledge as it combines two subjects and gives a unique problem for the student to solve. It also forces the student to ponder on real world problems as the world is filled with problems with subjects interlinked with each other. It also helps the student to think and solve puzzles in a creative and outside the box method. It also aids us into developing learner profile skills such as Knowledgeable etc.

1. favourite place in your country?

Canada: definitely Vancouver Island. We have some close family friends in Nanaimo, and every time we have visited, it has been absolutely beautiful. UVic was actually my safety school when I was applying for college, because I would not have complained about living there in the slightest

UAE: there’s this beach on the Abu Dhabi coast that stretches across this length of land/highway called Saadiyat. It’s technically walled-off and was bought by this construction company to build like,, beachfront villas, but we used to hop off the bus at the gas station at the halfway point between downtown and the Louvre satellite location, buy a bunch of firewood and junk food, and then hop the fence to get into the beach. Residents affectionately called it “Kite Beach” because it’s where all the local kite surfers ripped around 24/7, so there’d always be a ton of kites in the sky, and we would light bonfires at night, gorge ourselves on trash, listen to music and talk all night. And because the desert heat makes it fine to swim even at night, we’d do that too. It’s technically “trespassing” but its such an open secret among residents there that no one actually gives a shit. You learn what laws you can break when you’ve been there for a while.

UAE: I actually haven’t seen a lot of specifically Emirati films or TV. I’ve seen a LOT of Bollywood and general gulf/Egypt cinema because that’s what half the roster always is at UAE cinemas and from my time as a film journalist because part of my column was a review section for a chunk of what was to be released in the next month. I do enjoy Bollywood’s batshit plots and am still on the search for what the hell I watched in its entirely over a man’s shoulder on a plane because I was too enamored to look away and there were subtitles,,, if anyone knows a Bollywood film about an alien who falls to earth while the Hindi protagonist has a star-crossed romance with a Pakistani man during her university years in Berlin then im BEGGING you to tell me the title so I can rewatch that properly

Some sapphic films that don’t totally suck and that you probably-maybe haven’t seen

I’ll try to list rating/content warnings and what kind of story to expect going in (without giving away the entire movie, of course). I’ll also say what I personally liked and disliked, but I highly recommend checking out the movies on your own if the summaries pique your interest! 

1) Rafiki

Summary: Kena and Ziki live very different lives in Nairobi. Kena works in her father's shop and awaits the start of nursing school, while Ziki passes the days hanging out with her friends and making up dance routines. Their paths cross when their fathers run against each other for seats in the County Assembly, and they find themselves drawn to each other. Soon their interest grows to affection and the girls find ways to love each other despite the ever-watching gaze of the neighborhood.

Content warnings: homophobia (verbal and physical violence), brief sex scene

Ending: Bittersweet (although they are separated for some time due to their families finding out, they reconcile in the end. The future of their relationship is unknown — disclosing this as I know this alone would make this a film some might not want to watch!)

How to watch: With the streaming service Kanopy, you can use your local library card to watch this film!

Personal thoughts: It has a beautiful soundtrack and gorgeous purple-and-pink fairytale sequences. I loved the development of the relationship between Kena and Ziki, but if you’re someone who really doesn’t want to watch depictions of homophobia on screen, I’d give this one a pass.

2) Ek ladki ko dekha toh aisa laga 

Summary: Some love stories are not simple, Sweety's is one such story. She has to contend with her over-enthusiastic family that wants to get her married, a young writer who is completely smitten by her, a secret that she harbours close to her heart and ultimately the truth that her true love might not find acceptance in her family and society. Resolving these issues proves hilarious, touching and life-changing.

Content warnings: homophobia, abuse, and islamophobia

Ending: Heartwarming

How to watch: Netflix

Personal thoughts: The visuals are beautiful, the soundtrack is super fun, and the acting is great. The dancing at the opening scene tells you the upbeat energy this film is going to have, and the plot surrounding a play that is being put on about love culminates in is adorable. It’s a very sweet romantic comedy that tackles themes surrounding social acceptance.

3) Signature Move

Summary: Zaynab, a thirty-something Pakistani, Muslim, lesbian in Chicago takes care of her sweet and TV-obsessed mother. As Zaynab falls for Alma, a bold and very bright Mexican woman, she searches for her identity in life, love and wrestling.

Content warnings: There are brief non-explicit sex scenes, and one of the sources of conflict is Alma’s frustration that Zaynab wants to keep their relationship a secret due to being in the closet.  

Ending: Heartwarming

How to watch: Itunes or youtube (or amazon prime if you have it). 

Personal thoughts: Although Zaynab and Alma’s character can sometimes fall flat, the relationship both women have with their mothers is one of the best parts of the film, and I would say the film is worth watching if only for the final scene where Alma takes both her mother and Zaynab’s mother to watch Zaynab compete in her first wrestling match. It’s a very corny film, so if you’re not one for cheesy movies, this will not be your jam.

4) Yes or No (Yak Rak Ko Rak Loei)

Summary: Pie is a sweet girl who moves into a new college dorm room where she finds out that her new roommate Kim, is a tomboy who looks and dresses like a boy. As their friendship develops, Pie and Kim begin to wonder if the feeling they feel for one another is just an ordinary friendship or true love.

Content warnings: Homophobia (specifically Pie’s initial feelings towards Kim + various side-characters’ attitudes, including those of Pie’s mother). Also, there is a brief moment where a side character considers self-harm following romantic rejection.   

Ending: Heartwarming

How to watch: Netflix

Personal thoughts: This movie has SO much relationship drama. There is essentially a romance quadrangle between all the characters (Jane, Van, Kim, and Pie) on the cover. The development of the relationship between Kim and Pie is adorable, and I’ll also say that I love the aunt of Kim! However, the romantic conflict ranges from realistic to soap-opera (there’s one scene where Kim thinks she is cuddling her girlfriend but she is actually with Jane, and then Pie comes back to the dorm and assumes Kim was cheating on her). 

5) Rose-Colored Girl [short film]

Summary: Using Dodie’s song She, this short-film follows the rose-colored dream world of a young woman in love with her best friend. It’s less than ten minutes long, and the “what-ifs?” that she dreams of leave you hoping she’ll wind up the courage to confess.

Content warnings: n/a

Ending: Ambiguous/bittersweet

Personal thoughts: This is a super impressive short film — the lighting and use of sound make it just so beautiful to watch.

6) Pop Rox [short film]

Summary: Jesse decides to profess her love to her best friend Roxanne with a grand gesture. What could possibly go wrong?

Personal thoughts: Disclaimer: Jesse’s feelings are unrequited. However, this is a hilarious look at the messiness of lgbtq+ friend groups — the relationship drama between sapphic ladies can be just as complicated as it is in high school for straight teens. Also, I loved the fact both Roxanne and Jesse encapsulate this dirtbag/music scene vibe that so many gay women have going on.

7) The Last Blue Cup [short film]

Summary: Jesse is moving. Phel isn't. But when an unexpected Target rendezvous brings them together, things change. Is it enough to keep them together or will the distance between them end things before they begin?

Personal thoughts: It has a 90s romcom vibe, characters I loved, and a neat, self-contained narrative. Also, it’s a love story that takes place for the most part in a Target. (If you watch this, please watch until the end — there’s a “post-credits” scene that makes it clear it is a happy ending, and if you don’t watch until then, you will come away from it with a totally different message).

D23 EXPO 2019 - DAY 1 - DISNEY+ PANEL

On the first day of Disney’s D23 Expo this year, Disney hosted a huge panel on their upcoming streaming service, Disney+, which is set to launch this November. Here’s everything you need to know from the Disney+ panel.

THE MANDALORIAN 💫

The trailer for THE MANDALORIAN has finally been released!💫 The Mandalorian is the upcoming live action series set in the Star Wars universe, taking place after the events of Return of the Jedi and before the Force Awakens, following a lone Mandalorian gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy💫 Pedro Pascal is the Mandalorian, and the show also stars Giancarlo Esposito, Carl Weathers, Taika Waititi, and Ming-Na Wen.  The first season will consist of 8 episodes and each episode will be released on it own this November when Disney+ launches (aka the season won’t drop all at once).

OBI WAN KENOBI SERIES CONFIRMED🌟

After many rumors & reports, it has finally been confirmed at D23 by the man himself & Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy: Ewan McGregor is in OFFICIALLY REPRISING HIS ROLE AS OBI-WAN KENOBI IN A SERIES FOR DISNEY+!😱🌟 McGregor of course portrayed the role of the wise Jedi originated by Alec Guiness in the Star Wars prequels, and there were talks of an Obi-Wan standalone film for years, following the character after the events of Revenge of the Sith but before A New Hope. However, after Solo: A Star Wars Story, Disney & Lucasfilm have said that they’re taking a break from producing standalone Star Wars movies and seem to have shifted focus to TV series. The Obi Wan series will likely take place between Episodes 3 & 4, following a middle-aged version of the character. That’s all we know so far & honestly I’m THRILLED! Obi Wan is one of my absolute favorite Star Wars characters & I’d love to see it! HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL: THE MUSICAL: THE SERIES🎶

It’s not a remake, it’s not a sequel or spin-off of the popular Disney Channel movie from 2006. “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” is a mockumentary series based on the High School Musical films, following “a group of students at East High who stage a performance of High School Musical for their winter theater production, only to realize that there is as much drama that happens offstage as there is onstage.” It’s a bit weird to imagine, but the trailer helps clarify exactly what it is (a fake reality show about kids who put on a High School Musical show in East High). HEY NOW - LIZZIE MCGUIRE IS COMING BACK!🤩💘Hilary Duff is officially reprising her role from the hit 2000s Disney Channel show, in a sequel series that follows Lizzie as a millennial 30 year old living in NYC! The show will have the same animated Lizzie persona from the original show! This is what dreams are made of! 3 NEW MARVEL SERIES: MS. MARVEL, SHE-HULK, AND MOONKNIGHT

As part of the Disney+ panel held yesterday at Disney’s D23 Expo, the company announced that THREE more new Marvel TV shows are in the works for the company’s streaming service!

Ms. Marvel⚡️ A while back MCU head Kevin Feige teased that Ms. Marvel will be introduced to the MCU at some point, most likely after Captain Marvel. since the characters are connected, and it looks like that was true! A Ms. Marvel TV show is in the works for Disney+, following Kamala Khan, a young Muslim Pakistani-American girl with superpowers! She will have a TV show AND will be in the movies😭

She-Hulk💚 Disney also announced another TV show is in the works for Disney+ following SHE-HULK! She-Hulk is Bruce Banner’s cousin who acquired a different version of his Hulk condition…

Moon Knight🌑 It seems to me there were rumors & demands of a Moon Knight project for a while & Disney has just confirmed that they’re indeed producing a TV show based on the character! Marc Spector is a former US Marine & boxer who left the military to become an international mercenary but is granted a second chance at life by an Egyptian goddess after a near-death experience, but he is also granted enhanced strength and durability, & so decides to become a vigilante crime-fighter. Sadly it doesn’t seem like the Netflix Marvel shows will be making the move to Disney+ with more seasons, they weren’t even brought up. But Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, and Moon Knight are currently all set to be in Phase 4 of the MCU (2020-2021 release), along with many other Marvel shows on Disney+ that were previously announced including The Falcon & The Winter Soldier, WandaVision, What If, Loki, & Hawkeye. Unfortunately no casting news for the new shows, but we did find out that Wyatt Russell is joining The Falcon & The Winter Soldier where Sharon Carter will also be making an appearance, Kat Dennings is returning to the MCU through the WandaVision TV show reprising her role from the Thor movie.

On Ariana Grande @ Manchester Pride

So I’m sure y’all have seen this news, and if anyone has just heard about it and doesn’t know what’s going down...

So pretty much, at Manchester Pride in the UK, tickets for the Manchester Live, which is the event for which Ariana will be performing, are 70 pound sterling (or about 92 USD). And that’s just the base, not counting that apparently ‘second release’ tickets and such will be more than that. 

On top of this, this main event of Manchester Pride will be 18+ only. 

The problems with this? Let’s take a look.

1. People who are under 18 won’t be able to attend. There has been a LONG and hard-fought battle to get LGBT+ content on television, especially primetime TV, because people think that LGBT+ content is inherently sexual and NSFW in nature. By having an 18+ event be the main event of this Pride, they are both feeding into that and creating a space not welcome for younger LGBT+ folks. Speaking as someone under 21 in the US, there is a HUGE issue already of there not being any spaces for LGBT+ teens that aren’t: parties, bars, clubs, etc. that have age limits. It’s incredibly difficult and hard to meet other LGBT+ teens aside from the internet (which can be dangerous) and this is incredibly isolating. I’m going to guess most bars & clubs in the UK are mainly for over 18, and even if for everyone will have alcohol present. So where’s the support for our most vulnerable family? Who is thinking of the children? The teens who want to go, maybe this is the first year they are able to go? Maybe they need a huge event like this to get word on resources and learn more about themselves? Or even still, what about LGBT+ PARENTS who want to bring their children? Originally the TicketMaster T&C said that 17 & under can be admitted w/ a parent, and now the website says 18+ only. 

2. The price is absolutely deplorable. 70 pounds, truly, Manchester? This feeds into an argument I saw a while back: there truly are no places you can exist or attend for free. There are already so few places, really only certain parks and libraries, where you can go without any money and just exist. This is absolutely isolating to any LGBT+ folks who are low-income (or again: parents who need to pay for themselves and also their children, if they don’t want to or can’t find a baby sitter). Pride started as a PROTEST, not a party. Manchester Pride should be doing way more to find sponsors to cover the event costs, with an optional donation to charity from people at the gates. Offer free tickets online to help with crowd control, but 70 really? 

3. Ariana is not a “gay icon”. She absolutely should not be welcome in our community. She has queer baited in her song “thank u, next” and in the music video for “break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored”. Not to mention, anyone that so blatantly appropriates minority’s cultures for bank doesn’t deserve to be a “gay icon”: the LGBT+ community includes all racial & ethnic minorities and we need to do more to support those intersections of identity. By saying she’s welcome at Pride, that she’s an icon- that’s erasing the pain she’s caused to ethnic/racial minorities and by extent queer poc. Ariana really shouldn’t be given the same term that other (actually decent) gay icons, such as Judy Garland and Donna Summer, have been given. 4. There are other big-name musicians who actually are LGBT+ to give support. Halsey, Troye Sivan, Hayley Kiyoko, Brendon Urie, Kehlani, Sia, etc. These are all HUGE names in the music industry right now, and would have drawn just as big a crowd as Ariana Grande. Of course, most if not all of these musicians have had their own controversies- I’m not trying to say any of these folks are perfect. But they’re at least LGBT+ options, many of whom are listed are actually POC (unlike Ariana). This would give more support to musicians who actually should be at Pride and are more representative of the communities who need that representation and support. Why not give that whopping 250,000 pounds check to someone in your own community, Manchester Pride? 

5. Ariana is a huge name and she will draw unwanted people to the concert. There have already been posts on Twitter and elsewhere either by people themselves or by people who have overheard others saying that they are homophobic but will go to Pride for Ariana to have a “cheap” way to see her. Fans of her who are not friendly to LGBT+ people will definitely be going. This may not be all of the people buying tickets, but that doesn’t change the fact that because they got such a huge name for a musician, a safe space for LGBT people will be THAT much less safe. I saw some posts from much older members of the LGBT+ community saying that “well, whatever. We’ve been facing homophobia our entire lives.” But do y’all not get it? At the one place that’s supposed to be for celebrating our lives and protesting against homophobes? Do you truly want there to be that much more hatred in what should be a safe and supportive environment? Again, this loops back to my point about younger LGBT+ folks not feeling welcome: just because a 50 year old, wealthy, white person who has the resources to find community and the experience to handle the emotions of facing homophobia doesn’t have a problem with homophobes potentially being at pride, that doesn’t mean a 17 year old who maybe can’t escape a homophobic home and is still young and new to the world, still emotional and easily vulnerable, can handle that level of pain. Manchester is a very diverse area. You’re Hired

I love The Apprentice. I look forward to it every single year. It’s the one reality series that too-smart-for-you TV snobs won’t look down on you for watching, despite the fact that The Apprentice is really just Big Brother in suits. Think about it: larger-than-life contestants, living together in a big house, completing tasks where they will always be destined to fail (because it makes for much better conflict), all while being watched closely by an omnipotent figure, who calls all the shots.

In fact, Alan Sugar is a much scarier man-in-charge than the titular Big Brother. For one thing, he looks the contestants in the eyes when he’s destroying them emotionally - Big Brother hides away in a little recording booth somewhere, where he’s safe from any angry housemates, who’ve snapped after the pointlessness of what they’re doing has finally dawned on them. What a coward. Also, Alan Sugar is really bloody rich. Alan Sugar is so rich that he could probably buy you, and sell you back to yourself at a much higher price, and that’s pretty scary, if you ask me.

But, I digress. The thing that’s so great about The Apprentice is that it’s so low-stakes. Not to the contestants, of course, but to the viewer. See, it’s the only reality show where I never care who stays or who goes, and that’s because the contestants are usually, without exception, cocks - and this year hasn’t been much different.

Obviously, the stand-out recipient of the ‘Jesus Christ, You Really Are Absolutely Awful’ award this year has to be librarian and general irritant Lottie Lion, whose name alone makes her sound like the archetypal spoiled brat character from a Roald Dahl novel. It suits her so well, it’s almost as though her parents just sensed from birth that she was going to turn out that way. Or maybe she came out of the womb riding side-saddle on a horse and waxing lyrical about how much better she is than everyone else. I can’t know for sure, but I wouldn’t be surprised.

When she wasn’t shooting a piece-to-camera to repeat her mantra “I’m not here to make friends, I’m here to win”, she was busy coming up with increasingly ridiculous reasons why she was the ideal candidate for the top job in each task. She started out strong in Week 1 by announcing she was the best choice for sub-team leader in a tourism task, because “I know that the population of South Africa is 51 million”, and yet, amazingly, still managed to out-BS herself week after week. Perhaps the finest example was Week 9, in which she described having viola lessons when she was four as having been “in the music industry for 15 years”. By that logic, I’ve been in dentistry for 23 years, because I can navigate my own mouth with a toothbrush without taking out six of my teeth in the process.

Oh, and let’s not forget the remark she allegedly made in a contestants’ group chat, in which she told Pakistani candidate Lubna to “shut up, Ghandi”, before allegedly threatening “I’ll fucking knock you out at our press training”. Obviously, this is horrendously racist and absolutely out of order, and with any luck, Lubna might knock her out first, since, as a person born with arms, she has technically been in the boxing industry for 33 years.

On a much lighter note, this series might have introduced us to one of the most genuinely likeable contestants The Apprentice has ever seen in the form of Thomas Skinner, a self-described “full-time geezer”. Obviously, that’s not his day job - geezering does not pay very well, especially in this difficult economic climate. He’s a salesman, and a bloody good one - he’s so ridiculously charismatic that he could sell me the very concept of breathing itself and I’d probably pay over the odds for it.

Unfortunately, he wasn’t very good at much else, and was fired by a reluctant Alan Sugar after losing eight out of the nine tasks he’d been involved in. I got thinking, though… couldn’t Alan Sugar just take him on anyway? Considering the lack of success that previous winners have experienced, he honestly might as well. I’m not sure exactly what he would hire him to do, but if anyone can help Thomas realise his dream of actually making a living as a full-time geezer, then I’m sure it’s him.

Personally, I think he deserves all of the money and maybe a knighthood, purely on the basis he’s the first candidate in a long time that hasn’t once described himself as ‘cutthroat’ or ‘brutal’, or made some ridiculous statement about how money is so important to him that he’d probably murder his entire family for a fiver. You know, like they usually do.

This year’s final saw headhunter Scarlett Allen-Horton and artisan bakery owner Carina Lepore go head-to-head for the opportunity to work alongside The Ultimate Sugar Daddy, with the final task being to create a hypothetical launch for their respective businesses.

Step one was to pick a new brand name. Carina and co. decided on Lepore’s, because - as Thomas put it - “people will go for the bread, but they’ll go for you, too”. It’s a nice enough point, but if she’s opening a chain of bakeries, she won’t always be in there, will she? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been disappointed to go into a Blackpool branch of Gregg’s, only to be told that, once again, I’m unable to speak to King Gregg himself. He’s probably hiding in one of his fancy London stores, the big elitist. Scarlett had slightly more trouble with rebranding her recruitment company, which aims to place more women and minorities into top level engineering positions. Marianne helpfully suggested naming it after “those animals that build their own homes”. Beavers. She means beavers. Beaver Recruitment? Really? Not exactly suited to a top level headhunting agency, but on the bright side, she may have just stumbled on a great new way for men to describe going out on the pull.

Next on the agenda was to come up with a billboard and a TV advert. The billboards were both surprisingly good, at least in comparison to anything else filmed against a cheap green screen in this year’s series (the now infamous soundbite “who took my unicorn, Sparkle Stars??” from Toy Week immediately springs to mind). The TV advert task was a different story for Scarlett, who was surprised to find that her ‘vision’ of Lewis, Lottie and Marianne driving an imagery car in an empty warehouse wasn’t absolute advertising golddust. “It’s cheesier than I imagined”, she said, upon seeing it for the first time. How? I genuinely can’t understand how she came up with that and thought it was ever going to look like anything other than part of a hastily-planned GCSE Drama performance. But then I would say that, because as someone who has seen a TV advert before, I’ve technically been in marketing since 1996. On Carina’s team, their prison-themed advert for her artisan bread (no, I’m not sure how they arrived at this idea, either) was far more impressive - prefect from a 1960s comic book Ryan-Mark even managed to put in a convincing performance as a hungry jailbird, which wasn’t something any of us were expecting to see this year.

After this, and the all important pitches - which I’m not going to go into, since it’s consistently the least entertaining part of the finale, where I imagine most people, including me, take a toilet break - it was time for the final boardroom. In all seriousness, the tension in the final boardroom is mad. I can only imagine it’s like you and another person are staring down the barrel of a madman’s gun, except the madman is Alan Sugar, and you want to be shot because, instead of bullets, it’s money. Actually, it’s not like that at all, is it? But it must be absolute squeaky bum time for the candidates, is what I’m trying to say.

After a few minutes of back and forth, and a couple more minutes of Carina and Scarlett turning on each other at the last second - which I’m absolutely, one hundred-percent, completely sure the producers definitely didn’t encourage in any way - The Sugarman arrived at a conclusion, and crowned Carina the winner, with a statement that I’m sure we can all agree with: “I do like the idea of more bread.” Well, don’t we all?

Anyway, deserving winner found - as well as plenty of memorable moments and ridiculous characters along the way - that’s it for another year. The only thing I’m left wondering is why it’s called The Apprentice, since the prize is a £250,000 investment, and since most real life apprentice jobs pay about £3.90 an hour. But then I wonder that every year, and to be honest, I’m all fired out.
