Fashion Blog Post - Parsons
Tumblr media
For this activity, I sewed together a purse/handbag using cotton strips of fabric with a floral pattern. It took me about four hours to complete the project. After calculating my hourly wage, in addition to the cost of purchased fabrics, I would say that the retail price could go for about $60. For this project, I actually didn't use any mock-ups. My style is more free form so I feel I don't always need mock-ups, but if I were to create any, then I normally paint or illustrate them in various computer software before I actually create my physical, sewn designs. The most challenging part of this project was sewing together each piece in a way that exemplified my vision for the final product. I had to take everything into account in a multi-dimensional way that visualized front, back, sides, handles, and insides of the bag. It wasn't always easy to match them up in such an exact way. That is why I used pins and feel that pins are sometimes necessary in order to capture precise measurements of items. Getting the hang of the sewing process, using a machine, is also another real challenge. It requires a great deal of patience, manual dexterity, tenacity, and visual accuracy in order to complete a product that is even remotely aesthetically pleasing. I consider this project to be a success because I was able to properly visualize the cut and mold of my intentions for this purse without a mock-up. Sometimes I do need mock-ups for more complex projects, but this one did not need one since it was relatively simple compared to others I have done. Each aspect of designing is incredibly important, from start to finish. I would say that the most integral aspect of the design is the beginning because that is when design ideas flourish most prominently. Yes, attention to detail and getting things done quickly and efficiently while designing is important, but without passion, creativity, and a solid vision for what needs to be accomplished, the designs will seem like mere products without a real attentiveness to the process itself. Both artistry and technicality are significant aspects of fashion design, which is why I would like to constantly challenge myself to achieve more and more in this field.

In Solidarity with New School Part-Time Faculty: An Update on Contract Negotiations
Based on the principles of community, open dialogue, and critical engagement that are foundational to and for education, the Philosophy Film Club recognizes the part-time faculty and student workers of The New School. Our part-time faculty colleagues constitute 87% of the university’s teaching staff and are seeking a fair contract. We support their strike.
~For ongoing updates, including a side-by-side comparison of the current contract proposal, click here.
~The New School chapter of the American Association of University Professors has created a Letter of Support template for members and allies to reach out to their networks to update them about the current crisis and to encourage them to contact the administrative leadership at The New School.
~Alumni of The New School have organized a Statement of Solidarity that is open for signatures.
~Current students recognizing that education is a public good have also organized a Communiversity to maintain their learning during the strike. Faculty and community members interested in doing teach-ins are encouraged to get in touch.
Together onward!

‘An Extraordinarily Hostile Move’: New School Threatens to Withhold Pay in Adjunct Strike
‘An Extraordinarily Hostile Move’: New School Threatens to Withhold Pay in Adjunct Strike
Nearly 1,800 part-time faculty members at the New School, who have been on strike since November 16 for better pay and working conditions, remained out of work and on the picket lines on Wednesday even as the university said it would start withholding their pay. Meanwhile, the university, which faces a threatened lawsuit by angry parents, has demanded that all full-time faculty members, many of…

Art school Dropout
As someone who wants to drop out of art school and is getting a lot of push back from their parents about it. I wanna know what people think. I see myself as just a creator I just to create things. I get great ideas and love executing them. I wanna create my own bespoke furniture line of very much sculptural art that can be used as furniture by people. I honestly have big plans and goals for myself and I currently don’t feel like art school is the way for me to get there at this very moment. I have gut feeling that it isn’t the best possible way for me to accomplish. I am currently at Parsons school of design as a fine art major and I honestly just think the whole thing is stupid. in the past, school was definitely a place to gain access to knowledge that not all people where able to have. Information was a lot more gated. In this age of the internet that just isn’t the case anymore. I’ve been “studying” art in school for 5 years now (about to finish my first year at parsons the other 4 were at school). But everything I’ve learnt about creating has been through creating.
I understand school can give you access to facilities but with the money spent on school you could buy all your own equipment and keep it FOR LIFE and not just 3/4 years. I honestly think if people invested the money they spend on school on just themselves and strategically mapped out what would be best for them personally people would be a lot happier and better off. Anyways. I do worry that sometimes im being delusional in thinking I can sell my crochet and get an paid Apprenticeship in furniture design. I wanna work along side from an actual designer and learn how to make the shit I wanna make gaddamn. I also really wanna go back to London as that’s where im originally from and studying abroad aint it. Its interesting to see how my parents are so hell bent on the idea that an “education” is everything when I believe there are better more effective ways to learn and grow as a person, than just getting a degree.
