the drive there had been relatively calm. it wasn’t awkward though, y/n and lando had known each other for years, despite not talking for the past two . the conversation was laced with nostalgia as they reminisced on his rookie year, when she went to every race and he’d been convinced she was his “lucky charm”
the air outside was warm with a flowy cool breeze, australian autumns were always nice and provided a small comfort to the girl who’d appreciated the weather.
the club they’d gone to, however, was packed and it felt suffocating. y/n was never the one for clubs, she liked people, she liked dancing and music. but putting them together with a mix of alcohol and drugs never was something she enjoyed. (her brother on the other hand was the opposite)
she’d hung back near the bar slowly sipping on a sprite. she never drank alcohol; it was a personal preference, she hated the feeling of being out of control. lando had picked up drinking since the last time they’d saw each other, he was partying his little heart out with their friends now.
y/n hung back watching him with a sorta fondness in her eyes, the scene was beautiful to her, romanticizing the true happiness he was experiencing to ignore how claustrophobic she was feeling. and how she’d been picking at the skin around her nails and the pit in her stomach.
lando seemed to almost hear her cry for help, as he left the dance floor and walked over to her. she assumed to order another drink since he’d only had one. “you alright?”
y/n nodded but her mouth spoke differently, forever honest. “I feel like i‘m suffocating a bit, if i’m honest.” she admitted cringing as soon as she said it.
lando understood, but she knew he would. he helped out his hand, “then shall we?”
she furrowed an eyebrow and with pursed lips her eyes flicked up and down to his hand and then back to him. “shall we what?”
“bail.”
“you were having fun, I'm a grown woman. if I wanna leave, I will.” y/n reassured guilt filling up her throat.
lando shook his head with a small grin that he always seemed to adorn. “oh c’mon I invited you, I'm here to spend time with you anyway.”
hesitantly the dutch girl took his hand and they hurried out of the bar, met with fresh air at last and a chill of the night. it felt a bit silly but y/n thought about writing a book in this moment, she thought about how she’d described the scene, how the two old friends reconnecting would turn into something more.
she knew it was only a fantasy, all her books were. picturesque moments painted carefully by her hands, nothing that’d happen in real life. especially to her. she’d been confident in herself but she’d come to terms on how unsuccessful her love life had been. she was twenty-three and hadn’t dated a single person, not one out of the eight billion people on this earth.
so she’d lost hope. lando shouldn’t give her hope, she knew no one would ever follow through with it. she had enough self respect to stop trying to chase false dreams.
they’d been walking down the street of melbourne for a few minutes now in a comfortable silence though she’d been surprised lando managed to keep his mouth shut this long. the sky was clear, the stars brighter than she’d seen in a while, the streets were practically empty and the air smelt of saltwater.
“where are you taking me?” y/n asked realizing they’d passed lando’s car a couple minutes back.
lando looked at her, “do you not trust me?”
she pretended to think about it for a moment before meeting his gaze which remained on her. “haven't seen you in two years, maybe you've changed.”
he really had. he’d changed so much but somehow not at all, “you definitely have.” lando seemed to backtrack in his mind as his words came out as an insult. “in a good way I mean, I’ve just missed you.”
he missed her. maybe it’d been her chronic loneliness talking but she hadn’t heard those words from anyone in years. she looked down at her feet, a small smile growing on her face. “I missed you too, a lot.”
“why didn’t you call or text, I swear I would’ve thought you died if not for your instagram.” lando wasn’t mad or at least he didn’t sound it, still y/n was embarrassed there was no reason for her to fall off the face of earth like she did, maybe she was just destined to be lonely and needed to prove she could do it. maybe that didn’t need two years to prove, she’d been proving it for twenty-two years.
“I’m not mad, I’m just happy to see my idol again.” he bumped into her shoulder with a smirk.
y/n giggled looking at him unconvinced. “your idol?”
lando nodded, “I'm your biggest fan, don't you know?”
“mhm of course I knew, reading august in two days must’ve been a new record.” the day lando commented on her instagram post saying he’d pre-ordered her book, she’d gone to her records of past books. he’d bought every book she’d ever read. every single one. even the special edition covers she’d published.
never had anyone done a gesture like that for her. sure it might’ve been just because he’d like to read, but y/n wanted to live in a bliss where he did it for her.
watching the view change in front of her as they continued down the street she recognized where they’d been walking to. the beach. once they’d reached the place where the concrete ended and sand started. they both took off their shoes, lando grabbed hers holding them for her.
the sand was soft to the touch, the beach was empty now and spanned for miles. waves crashed down onto the sand in a nice pattern of noise. it was pitch black except the moon which provided a nice soft light into the water far out. the breeze felt stronger here, y/n crossed her arms struggling to provide warmth to her bare arms.
the pair had taken a seat on the slightly wet part of the sand closer to the water. “it’s beautiful out here.” she commented. “like some shit you’d see in a rom-com.” a genre she knew too much about.
“is this the part where I tell you you’re the only girl I’ve taken here?” lando said looking at her she could hear the smirk in his voice.
y/n let out a laugh. “is this the part where I act surprised because you’re known for being such a ‘player’?”
“I’ll do the whole yawn and arm over shoulder thing if you want, make this really realistic.” lando took off his black hoodie revealing a matching black t-shirt underneath. “here by the way.”
he handed her the hoodie, “oh I’m fine.” she very clearly was not. she wanted to tell him to stop her some kind of hope, to not make her fall for him as she was now.
“you so are not, you’re shivering and it’s freaking me out.” y/n wasn’t sure if she should’ve said thank you or been offended by ‘freaking him out’. she took the hoodie, it was soft fabric and smelt of his cologne, which smelt expensive.
she put the hoodie on, relieved by the warmth she suddenly felt. after a while of chatting and laughing about stupid things like they used to, y/n comfortably rested her head on his shoulder, eyes feeling the need to shut but they wouldn’t like she wanted to be conscious for every moment of this, knowing she’d miss his comfort as soon as it was gone.
“do you have to wake up for your flight early tomorrow.” he asked, his voice soft and he cautiously started to run his fingers through her hair, until she’d relaxed more and he was more confident with his innocent touches.
“mhm.” she mumbled.
he carefully brushed the few knots in her hair, “should I take you home then it's getting late.”
everything in her body was telling her to stay no, to stay there, she never wanted to leave. but her mind spoke differently, she had a book signing tomorrow she couldn’t miss her flight nor could she be too tired. she replied again, more disappointed than before, “yeah probably.”

Part 2: Why is the accent? Where and when does Hobie come from? Part 1: Who, What (London Accents) | Part 3: How (Writing Tips)
In this section, we'll touch on racism since the 70s, black Londoner youth culture and how punk has historically interacted with those things.
To begin, let’s answer the question of what the hell all us black people are doing here in the U.K. 😂
Long story short, after World War II, the U.K. invited subjects of the empire over, in need of help rebuilding the place and doing essential work after getting bombed and stuff. There was further incentive on the subjects’ side to come as many of their men had been sent off for the war but were out of work and not properly compensated upon their return, leading to a poor economy and many people hoping for better in the ‘mother country’. Caribbean people, mostly Jamaicans, came over from then right through the 60s but were not welcomed and treated as British as many of them thought they might be… cause, you know, racism.
In 1962, 1968, 1971 and 1981, legislation was passed that made it incredibly difficult for black Caribbeans to come over, even to this day, which led to the migration of black people shifting to predominantly Africans, mostly West Africans, in the 80s, who would come for education and work purposes mostly. (For context, in the 2020s, there are more African people than Caribbean people in the U.K.). In the 70s and 90s, East Africans fleeing conflict have also immigrated en masse, although the numbers were quite a bit smaller than the West African and black Caribbean diaspora.
[not an expansive breakdown of all ethnicities, I just wanted to talk about the most populous black nationalities for the general gist of where black British life really got on a roll]
So, onto life as a black person in the U.K.
It’s important to remember that the U.K. was racist as fuck AND did not have Jim Crow laws or a history of relegating certain cities or neighbourhoods to ethnic minorities because, by the time we had been invited, there were not so many of us living in England for such laws to be deemed necessary (by racists).
Living literally side by side, often in the same building, with people who wanted to see them brutalized had a big impact on how black British people navigated life back then and has residual cultural effects on how we behave to this day.
One thing that stood out to me was the line where Hobie says he has “a laugh at the pub with the mandem”. As many of you will know, the pub is a large part of general British culture as the main drinking scene. Until more recently, you couldn’t just go and buy alcohol from the supermarket or whatever like you can now, so people had to go to the pub for a drink. Additionally, during times when getting clean water was unreliable due to cholera outbreaks, a drink from the pub was safer than drinking water.
It’s also important to know that, unlike clubs, many pubs sell food and are family-friendly, so while it’s not likely for a little kid to be bouncing to go the pub because it’s just basically like a restaurant to them, it’s a place that a child can be used to going to.
Not only do pubs sell food, but pubs also are places that are mostly used to watch football, as well as play pool, participate in pub quizzes (competitive general knowledge pop quizzes done in teams) and generally be out late to sit and talk.
That being said, as I mentioned before, how black people navigate where we live is different to how white people do.
Whilst many black people will go to the pub with their work colleagues or with their mixed friend groups, pubs generally have never been a haunt for black adolescents.
Instead, black drinking culture is more associated with dance and music, i.e. house parties, clubs (particularly clubs or club nights where music popular amongst the black community is played and, in older times, basement boozers) and lounges. Unlike white counterparts, most black kids will not have grown up going to the pub or around people who went and would not be used to going until they got invited out, likely by workmates.
To this day, although racism has chilled out so much since the mid-20th century, a lot of younger people actually still have a latent fear of facing racism from white football hooligan types and drunk, older white people in pubs. If you went to a pub, you typically wouldn’t see many young black people in there, if any.
The epitome of this mindset was on display during the last World Cup, during which Gen Z black U.K. TikTok was filled with half-jokes about the brutality they would face sitting in the pub to watch an England game if a black team member were to miss a kick or otherwise make a mistake. It was something we joked about in real life too and there was a rumour that went around - which many of us believed to be true - that two black guys had been thrown in the Thames because the black players had missed the penalty kicks they took.
It was just a rumour, however, people did take to racially abusing the players online and, whilst it wasn’t true, you can see what the general attitude towards pubs tends to be and why it’s not a hotspot for black youth.
There are U.K. pubs that historically have had more black patronage in black communities but there’s only a few and they’re not really a thing in London.
Knowing that, it’s not to say that no young black people frequent pubs, but it means that it says something about Hobie that he does (or his world, which we’ll talk about later). What it says exactly is up to your headcanon, but it’s worth noting that it’s not typical for a black teenager in London to hang out at the pub, even if they are rebellious and not concerned by the drinking age.
So you may be thinking, damn, why do pubs have such a reputation? What happened that meant that - to this day - there’s such a divide?
While the U.K. was always racist and was unwelcoming to those who arrived during the Windrush period, it continued to get worse going into the 70s. The increasing popularity of the fascistic political party called the ‘National Front’ saw the rise of ‘the immigrants are taking our jobs’ rhetoric used to appeal to the white working class that persists, to a less extreme, today, such as with the political party UKIP, as well as the English Defense League (EDL), both of which have taken on a more Islamophobic angle than the focused and explicit anti-black & anti-browness of the National Front. The National Front’s supporters would chant and sing stuff like “We’re gonna send the blacks back”.
In daily life, black kids had to deal with shameless racism, bullying and violence from their white peers. There was a ‘sus’ law implemented, which essentially made it so that police could (and very much did) stop and arrest any black person they saw on the street that they felt was ““““suspected person””””, which included unprovable and outrageously ridiculous bullshit like being suspected of ‘loitering with the intent to steal’ (so basically, if you’re black and outside, you were - and still are, especially if you’re young - likely to be suspected of this). As mentioned earlier, there were people who would watch games and get drunk in the pub, then go out into the streets on a destructive rampage would also take those opportunities of chaos to physically assault black and brown people.
All of this was on top of institutional racism and micro-aggressions like we have today but turned up to 10. Minorities didn’t feel safe going around their own city alone for fear of getting mobbed or having rocks thrown at them. Even in their own homes, racists were putting literal shit and bombs in their letterboxes. The popularity of the National Front saw a rise in Nazism - an especially wild expression of racism, considering the Nazis had bombed the fuck out of London in WW2, which was the reason the U.K. went crying to the subjects for help in the first place.
So, naturally, ethnic Londoners tended to craft and operate in their own spaces when it came to leisure, more attuned to the cultures from their family’s countries of origin as well as the kinds where they were just generally more accepted for who they are. Though no longer out of necessity for safety, this aspect of Black British culture persists today, to a lesser extent though, and latent anxieties about acts of extreme racism still remain in the collective subconscious, even though most young people today will have never experienced such extremes.
Just for clarity, this is not to say black people are afraid of white people in general, I’m not sure that could even have been said in the 70s, since there were also plenty of non-racist (aka normal) people too. Back then, the culture was probably a lot more gatekept than it has been for the past few decades, but I’m trying to explain why black British culture and black British life is a different experience to being white British, it’s not only experiencing racism, but it’s also that we just do different stuff cause we historically didn’t feel welcome at their figurative tables and thus did our own thing mostly. It’s why you still get friend groups that are predominantly black despite everyone’s families likely coming from different countries with different cultures, because we relate in terms of black British culture and not feeling especially understood amongst white counterparts. But if white people make us feel like they are down with us, we’re down with them, as one would hope lol.
Speaking of down white people, another huge part of Hobie’s character is that he’s a punk, of course.
So, not gonna lie to you guys, due to the things I just stated about how black people had to navigate the world and craft their own spaces in order to feel comfortable and safe, the punk scene (as we would think of it) has never been a thing that was popular amongst black British people. It’s a predominantly white scene and during the 70s was not unaffected by rising Nazism. To this day, there are still Nazi punks and what we call dirtbag leftists, so you can imagine, at the time, though there were and still are more non-racist white punks, there were enough Nazis that a. it’s not something that seemed welcoming to black people and b. non-racist White punks in the 70s felt that the Nazi problem was bad enough that they needed to do something big about it, which we’ll get onto.
Because we’re not a monolith, of course, there were black punks such as Poly Styrene, the lead singer of X-Ray Spex, and Basement 5, a punk-reggae band (remember this), but other than that, I haven’t been able to find documentation of black punk life in particular, nor have I been able to get any personal accounts from family. Punk is a small-ish scene to begin with, so you can imagine that the black people who participated are very few. Here, I’m not trying to say that few black people enjoyed listening to the music as part of their taste, I’m pretty sure a lot of young people would have liked the music but not necessarily been active in the scene/culture in the way that white counterparts were.
Again, the fact that Hobie is a full-out punk as a black teen says something about him or his world; what in particular, is totally up to interpretation and headcanon, but understand that it’s another unique behaviour.
A similar thing that did include black people was ‘skinhead’ culture, something that emerged from and celebrated the working class, especially Jamaican people, in the 1960s, but it was co-opted by ‘punk’ and white people, then drifted away from its associations with and relevance amongst black people and became most popular amongst Nazis in the 80s, associated with the ‘British Movement’. Most people will think of racist white football hooligan types when they think of skinheads nowadays, even though in reality, for both punks and skinheads, not all people in these subcultures are racist/fascist.
As I mentioned earlier, because minorities were living side by side with working-class white people, a lot of stuff that wasn’t kind of gatekeepy (i.e. super black) has always been at risk of being yanked from us and has historically been done by literal Nazis and I’m sure this plays a part in alternative scenes that stray very far from the cultures we’re raised in not being the most popular amongst us.
Nonetheless, non-racist punks and black people agreed on a lot of core points about classism/capitalism and the need to stomp out racism, which led to white punks starting the Rock Against Racism (RAR) organisation, which held concerts across the country with the intention of bringing people together to take a stand against racism. If you’re able to, I recommend watching the documentary about it called White Riot (2019), which whilst it does include some black interviewees, focuses on the white punks’ side of things and the racism of the time, as opposed to black life. Still worth the watch :)
Other than punk rock, you know what other acts were invited to play at these RAR concerts?
Black musicians who played funk and reggae were also invited. Even though their music taste was different, the message was the same. Additionally, it might surprise non-British people to hear but even white British people have long loved themselves some reggae, hence Bob Marley’s popularity here.
Reggae is a genre that is often used to speak on politics and social issues, it’s why Rastafarians love it and make such music. So, whilst the punk-reggae fusion of Basement 5 might sound strange today when reggae is not as popular as it once was, it makes total sense why. You can also see references to the London punk scene in the 70s (the time he was living in London) in Bob Marley’s song “Punky Reggae Party”.
I mention this to emphasise how the blackness of black British people, even in white space, has not typically proven to give way, that to be punk or believe in such values is not to relinquish all traces of black culture. I also say this to say, as I’ve said in a previous post bouncing off of Daniel Kaluuya’s thoughts on ‘punk’, that people who are adamant Hobie would not listen to genres of music that are popular with or created by predominantly black people alongside the more typical punk rock give off strange vibes. There’s no precedent for a black person to totally give up that part of them that they would’ve grown up with just because they’ve solidified a political view. Of course, some people are less into it than others, as I said earlier, black people are not a monolith, but given all this context, I’m begging people to not post things like ‘Hobie would never listen to [insert black genre here] because he’s a punk! Other people’s headcanons/playlists are stupid and they’re punk posers!’.
You can believe he only listens to genres of rock, and that’s fine, but stop telling black people that their headcanons where they project their more black tastes onto Hobie are inaccurate because they aren’t and it’s very strange to gatekeep interpretations of a black character from blackness in that way.
If you do want to know some genres popular amongst or pioneered by black British people, most of which popped off in the 90s, look to grime (hip hop, electronic), garage (electronic), drum n bass (electronic), jungle (electronic), U.K. drill (hip hop), afroswing (hip hop, r&b), reggae, dancehall (hip hop, reggae), hip hop, funk and r&b. I’d say pop since it’s popular amongst all ethnicities lol but, since Hobie is a punk, you’re gonna wanna exchange that for rock and indie, though I think it’s also fair to think there’s a few pop songs that Hobie would like, since being an anarcho-communist doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun, idk. Headcanons and stuff are not really what I’m here to share or enforce. Plus, of course, a lot of these genres are anachronistic but, at the same time, I’m pretty sure most people’s playlists feature more modern songs anyway, hell, even the song selected as Hobie’s intro is from 2011.
And none of this is not to downplay Hobie’s love of rock genres either.
I did make a playlist for myself, if anyone wants it or recommendations you can drop an ask 🤓
In the past few years, there’s been a noticeable growth of alternative life in London black youth culture, notably the roller-skating scene, as well as more people participating in more classic takes on alternative culture like goths, punks, etc. and, of course, black nerd culture has been popping since the late 90s. The black people participating in these alternative cultures aren’t relinquishing their blackness, putting hip-hop in the bin and whatnot - people can be multi-faceted.
What I hope you take away from this is that Hobie is a unique and nuanced character, he’s not a typical representation of any of the things he is, which is personally why I love him so much. I also hope you understand that being a black punk in the U.K., before more recent times, would have been a different thing to being a white punk because, not only are you participating in a counter-culture, you’re going outside the safety net and norms of black British culture which has been positioned as inherently counter-cultural anyways and is one you can never hide your associations with or come out of. It says a lot about him, it comes down to headcanon what, but it’s important to recognise that these aspects of him are not a given but things that would have been purposeful developments or huge moments of self-discovery in his life.
Headcanons are something that throws somewhat of a spanner into the works. Everything I’ve said is historically accurate but we also don’t know that Earth-138’s New London would reflect all these aspects of our Earth’s London. Perhaps 138 is written in a race-blind kind of way or, not coming from black British culture, the writers may not envision the world authentically from our point of view and might be unaware of how it’s different; maybe the execs would not allow them to tap into the racist aspect of Nazism and have the writers keep it vague for marketability's sake; hell, maybe the date on the mugshot was just an Easter egg and not a canon-accurate date, who knows?
On top of that, if you headcanon Hobie as a transracial adoptee (meaning adopted by people of another race) or that he was orphaned at a very young age or otherwise not enculturated and socialised as a black boy, maybe none of this applies.
From the current slang to the casting of Daniel Kaluuya, it seems clear to me that, in tandem with the retro vibe, Hobie has been designed to also evoke more contemporary ideas of blackness so the full picture of what the writers have in mind is anyone’s guess at this point.
That being said, I feel like those conclusions would all take some stretching and reaching to come to. I’m not here to tell you what you can and cannot interpret or write, but I’m just trying to give some information so you can write more accurately and understand Hobie and Black Londoner life better.
So, now you understand where we’re coming from, I think you’re ready for the writing advice 😎

FFVII Rare Pair Week 2023
Tumblr media
Urban Dictionary defines rarepair as “A ship or pairing that not many people ship or is very rare to find fanfiction and fanart of. Typically happens within small fandoms or with minor characters.” So what’s your favourite Final Fantasy VII related rare pair? Do you have more than one? Here’s a chance to showcase them and help them move up from being rare! Not all parts of the pairing have to be from FFVII, and you don’t have to do the same pairing or group for the whole week! Below we have a list of prompts for this year. Feel free to be as creative with those as you want to, and take your time working on your entries, but please don’t forget to post them on the right date if you can. (But remember, no matter how late it’s better than never!)
For this event we are using a category approach. You can use the category as a theme for your prompt and the listed items suggested ideas. If none of the prompts give you any ideas, don’t worry! You can create anything you like for the week, provided it involves a rare pair! The goal of the week is to celebrate and share our rare pairs more than to just follow a list. Be it art, writing, mood boards, or even fic recs, just spread the love!
Feb. 16 | Day 1. Valentines/Galentines/FriendsDay. February is the home of Valentine’s Day - do they celebrate? If it’s a platonic pairing, do they do something on that day to celebrate their friendship?
Feb. 17 | Day 2. Music. Making music. Listening to music. Dancing to music. Workout music. Theme songs. (Or maybe putting on a song and taking inspiration from that song on what to write.)
Feb. 18 | Day 3. Self Care. Spa days. Cooking for each other. Bubble baths. How do they relax together, or give each other space to relax?
Feb. 19 | Day 4. Costumes. Masks. Disguises. Undercover. Parties. Holidays. Roleplay.
Feb. 20 | Day 5. Transitions. There are many transitions in life that can be meaningful. The transitions of night to day, the transitions from one job to the next, a move from one place to another, from single to married to widowed. What’s a transition that was important to your characters?
Feb. 21 | Day 6. Combo Day (mix and match, take any prompts and combine them!)
Feb. 22 | Day 7. Free Day
Need more inspiration? Our past prompt lists can be found below, and you’re welcome to use any of them!
2022 List
2020 List
2019 List
2018 List
Also, mod Asylos is taking requests for things to write! That’s right, you can get something written for your rare pair, and not just do all the heavy lifting yourself. Send in your requests as an ask to this blog any time now up until the end of the event week.
Please remember to include the week’s tag (ffviirarepairweek) within the first 5 tags or else we might be unable to find your work! We will NOT accept/reblog anything containing Character/Ship Hate, so avoid including those in your entries. Also don’t repost anyone else’s work as your own! You are welcome to reblog other’s posts, but credit where credit is due.
You can submit your works on AO3 to the event collection at https://archiveofourown.org/collections/FFVIIrarepairweek
And if you have any questions, don’t be afraid of sending an ask.
We hope it turns out to be a fun event for everyone!

Sam and Colby going to Jake’s party made me think that maybe when things got bad between them , it was more Snc and Corey being on worse terms and having some fight and Jake just sticking to Corey , because he was always closer to him? Idk. Because Snc are bad at cutting bad people out from their life, but I doubt that they would forgive Jake if he would really did something really really bad for them. Even Colby wouldn’t I think … idk… just thinking.
Bit honestly I hope they will never reunite with Corey and for fuck sake i beg you never Elton. I can tolerate Jake… but not those two
i always believed that whatever happened between snc and jake was just petty, dumb shit and that nothing truly serious happened. but i figured whatever did happen caused them to need a break from one another.
this is my guess about all of it (so obviously take it with a grain of salt):
i think when jake and corey moved in with snc, they thought things would be like it was in the old trap house. however, snc weren't gonna let them go buckwild crazy bc now this was a house that they owned, not rented. i think once snc went from roommates to landlords (in a way), that started the riff in the friendship. we also gotta remember that it wasn't just them splitting off, jake/corey and snc, it was also the entire friendgroup. slowly but surely, everyone stopped being friends for some reason. my personal guess is that once snc stopped making the content they used to make ie the paranormal content with jake and corey, mix that with the pandemic and not seeing one another, i think that caused everyone to reevaluate their friendships. mike had his issues with some of the friends, kevin ventured off too, aryia moved, most moved onto knj's friendgroup, ect ect.
and you could tell things were changing or had changed. by kat's bday of 2020, not everyone was showing up. and then definitely by sam's, no one came over. i also believe that snc changing up their content made some of their friends jump ship. i think some of their friends didn't believe that snc would be succeeding if they changed their format, and if snc don't succeed, neither do their friends since so many of them at the time relied on snc's clout.
by 2021, things changed a lot. i think by that point, jake had alluded to wanting to move out and have his own place so that he could be loud and obnoxious without it being an issue (which is what seemed to be a problem in the house for some reason that he never explained). so he moved out. and then corey followed suit not long after that.
now with corey, i think he had plans to move out eventually, but i think snc not doing paranormal content and moving on to other things pushed his hand. corey barely made his own content around this time. realistically, he relied on snc and their constant posting to give him any attention since he couldn't keep up or bother to post his own content often enough. and once snc stopped doing haunted stuff, i think corey knew he had to jump ship and find someone else to lean on. and that's where elton comes in at.
ppl forget that there was a period of time that elton didn't want to do tfil. back in late 2018/early 2019, he stopped tfil. he literally ended it and said that he wanted to make documentaries. he made one or two and no one cared about them, which is why he came back out with tfil and did those trips with snc, corey, and andrea. elton lost the love he had for his own brand and only brought it back bc he had no other options.
elton had done paranormal stuff before on his other, personal channel (which is now the overnight channel). granted, a lot of them were faked or had edits in them to make the content more interesting, but he did do that stuff prior to snc doing it. while elton moved onto paranormal stuff, snc switched to 25x25, which elton saw as a copycat to tfil - even tho it never was.
corey had to move on with elton, not only bc from he said he wanted to make music and get back into dancing (which… how's that going for you) but bc elton was doing the one thing that brought corey attention: paranormal content. ppl knew corey for the paranormal content he made with snc, so jumping onto someone else's brand that was paranormal related worked for him.
and things only escalated once snc went back to paranormal investigating when 25x25 didn't work out like they hoped.
i think jake and corey were very close since they became friends, and it only made sense that once they moved out and kinda pretended snc didn't exist (for one reason or another) to rely on each other. but again, i don't think jake ever really had a deep issue with snc. maybe in the beginning when he first moved out, but i say after a couple months he probably was fine with them again. plus, friendships go thru ebbs and flows all the time.
as for corey and snc….. that friendship will probably never be fully mended. i think corey only sided with elton in the beginning bc he had to. but by this point, i think he's equally lost in the sauce as much as elton. they both love to think that snc stole ideas from tfil/elton when that just didn't happen. and now they're in a race with snc when they aren't even in the same game as them lol
i don't see elton or corey ever really being friends with snc again, or vice versa. if they do become friends, there's gonna need to be a LOT of talking to get thru all the bs that occurred.
also… snc are gonna have to deal with half the fandom hating elton for forever sksksk

Release: May 22, 2020
Lyrics:
Oh-oh uh-weh oh-oh
Yeah
Oh-oh uh-weh oh-oh
Yeah
Everyone's saying
Forget what they say 'cause I wanna get in your face
I'm lettin' you taste
I wanna know, I gotta know
I want a player
Don't care what they say, I am weavy too
For you
Laud and taste you know I demand you
Laud and taste you wait 'til I mean you
Laud and taste you are in my feelin', I feel it, I feel it
Laud and taste you all know I want it
Laud enough and baby get on it
Drink it all and just be alone, yeah, we on it
I be like, I'm a sicko
No, you don't know who you playin'
Overdose
You can take me on a daily, daily, yeah
Baby, I'm a sicko, ah-ah-ah
I be like, I'm a sicko
No, you don't know who you playin'
Overdose
You can take me on a daily, daily, yeah
Baby, I'm a sicko, ah-ah-ah
Rainy day, rainy day
Kiss me and now you burst
Fill it up, fill the cup
Until it's not enough
Slip it all, taste my love
'Cause you know I'm your drug
Now we know that's what it does
And you don't want to come near me
Acting all silly
Hoes parties with me
In the club they're like 50
And now you know
Gettin' girls that look like Dua and Rita Ora
But they all walk away when they find out that, that, that
I'm a sicko
No, you don't know who you playin'
Overdose
You can take me on a daily, daily, yeah
Baby, I'm a sicko, ah-ah-ah
Songwriter:

James Bell / Felix Jaehn / Labinot Larry Gashi / Hitimpulse / Melissa Storwick / Vincent Kottkamp
SongFacts:
Sicko was created by the three performers themselves - Faangs and Gashi under their real names "Labinot Larry Gashi" and "Melissa Storwick" respectively - together with the co-authors James Bell, Vincent Kottkamp and the producer quartet Hitimpulse (consisting of: Jeremy Chacon, Jonas Kalisch, Henrik Meinke and Alexsej Vlasenko). The production was carried out by the producer team Hitimpulse, Jaehn and Kottkamp. The piece was mixed, mastered and programmed under the direction of Austrian sound engineer Nikodem Milewski. The instrumentation was carried out by Jaehn (drums and synthesizer), Kalisch (drums), Kottkamp (bass guitar), Meinke (synth pads) and Vlasenko (synthesizer).
Only the artist names and the song title can be seen on the front cover of the single. The inscription is in white font, centered, on an orange background, in the middle of the cover image.
Sicko was first released as a download and streaming on March 13, 2020. It was released as a single track by the music label Virgin Records and distributed by Universal Music Publishing. The song was published by Duende Songs Musikverlag, Kookie Diamond and Sony/ATV Music Publishing. On the day of release, a remix version made by Jaehn himself was released as a single track. On June 12, 2020, a remix version by the Austrian DJ Toby Romeo was released, also as a single track for download and streaming.
The lyrics to Sicko are written in English. Translated into German, the title means something like “mentally disturbed” or “crazy”. The music and lyrics were written or composed jointly by James Bell, Faangs, Gashi, Hitimpulse, Felix Jaehn and Vincent Kottkamp. Musically, the song is in the realm of dance pop, with borrowings from Afrobeat and urban. The tempo is 125 beats per minute. The key is E minor. In terms of content, “Sicko” describes a person who repeatedly reaches his mental limits and is characterized by negative, sometimes disturbing thoughts. Many artists who are constantly on tour and constantly encounter emotional ups and downs experience such states of mind. Jaehn said in an interview that he believes everyone has a “sicko” in them. We all have dark character traits that come to light from time to time. For a while they took over and controlled his life.
The song is structured on an intro, two verses and a chorus. The song begins with the intro sung by Faangs, which is immediately followed by the first verse, which is interpreted by Faangs in a kind of rap. The first verse is followed by the chorus, which is sung by Gashi. The second verse follows the chorus, which is also sung by Gashi. After the second chorus, the song ends with another chorus, this time interpreted together by Faangs and Gashi. Jaehn only works on the piece as a producer; the main vocals were completely taken over by Faangs and Gashi.
Two official music videos were released for Sicko. First, a lyric video was released, which premiered on YouTube on March 21, 2020. As is typical for lyric videos, it always shows the currently sung song lines in white font in the foreground. Blurred people can be seen in the orange-red background. The actual music video finally premiered on April 8, 2020. It begins with Jaehn, on whom the camera initially moves slowly until he closes his eyes. The three performers can then be seen during an exuberant celebration in a villa. The total length of the video is 2:36 minutes.

NEW MUSIC: Carmen Caska ~ To Be Plugged
Tumblr media
NOTE: I originally posted this to AOTY, but thought I'd drop here as well
I have been really excited for this project, ever since it was first mentioned all the way back in 2019/2020.
Over the last few years, it has been relatively quiet on Caska’s front regarding their musical output; a couple demos here and there but otherwise not so much.
In 2020 there was “WHACK” - a more classically hip-hop styled track complete with chipmunk vocals and a real sense of Spaß (to appropriate a Brechtian term) in both Caska’s vocal delivery and lyrics as we learn about the artist’s personal convictions and how they navigate through the world.
In 2021 there was “220 - 2” an interesting listen that with hindsight, due to its pitch shifting and glitchy, yet serene drops, could be viewed as a forecast for the musical direction Caska was headed.
These aside, the last substantial offering Caska was the 2019 mixtape, “ARI”- a project that saw the artist take a dramatic leap forward from their early days of Acoustic-y Lofi Hip-hop (under the alias Toph, or Topshiba) into a world of more industrial/Alternative hip-hop. On “To Be Plugged” however, we see Caska take yet another step - this time incorporating flavours of hyper-pop and electronic music into the mix, yielding a more ambitious, confident and engaging listen.
Over this span we’ve also seen several artist name changes for this project, starting with Ari Mori, moving to Aari Mori finally arriving at Carmen Caska - a fact that is useful to note as they are the literal stages of Caska's devopment.
Context aside, the review begins below
The album opens with “through me” an electronic, shoegaze-y number that sets the sonic stage for what we are about to listen to. Lyrically, Caska establishes a recurring theme of snow - something that is referred to again later on the project. As a listener, you very much “descend” into the world of this project during it’s runtime and it definitely feels so beginning with this track.
“You will drop everything” is an uptempo track that could have fit in on “Ari” - not that this is a bad thing. Instrumentally, this song feels like you’re travelling in a race car, with bending synths, glitchy drums, and a roaring bass.
“Lil Hoe” - is an alternate version of what was the lead single titled “Gutted” released with an accompanying mv in 2020. Due to this song, or at least the idea for it being in the ether for so long relative to the rest of the tracks, I feel most attached to this one. Though I miss the clearer original’s lyrics, in particular section in the original with the lyrics “Made into an addict but I loved her” I appreciate this track for what it is, which at the end of the day is still a hyper-pop banger.
“Have Mercy” is probably one of my favourite songs off this album, there is a fantastic sense of progression throughout its run, the “This is like this many rings” part just goes HARD and I also love the line “all the angels have fallen”
“Last Dance” is an apocalypse party anthem, with fluttering/growling arpeggios - which echo Portishead’s “the rip”
On “Heart Ate Whole” Caska flexes their fantastic production talents - its just a marvel to listen to.
“Tear” is a powerful, yet serene stroll down memory lane, as Caska manages to express the feeling of growing up - I have already written a review for this so I won’t go on much longer- but I wanted to note that it is my thinking that the reference to snow on this record could be a symbol of purity, or innocence, which becomes more powerful considering its use on this particular song
“Kill Me now” - feels Jpegmafia influenced in the best way, especially with the gang vocal chops - there’s a great sense of balance between braggadocio and vulnerability, which reminds me specifically of Peggy’s song “Kenan vs Kel”.
“Valhalla” is another banger - nuff said.
The project ends on “East River”, which I think is one of Caska’s best penned songs. I LOVED the passage “What did he think about?/In those very last breaths before the air ran out/Was it someone/Who gave meaning to every bubble/Who made his heart more than a muscle”. Instrumentally, I liked the distorted guitars and the way the whole composition builds is immaculate. - A truly epic closer.
All in all, I believe that this project is very well conceptualised/executed. Fantastic production, Unique vocals, some decent to brilliant lyrics as well. Would highly recommend. My only critique is that the lyrics are still buried in the mix, of course this is in no small part a stylistic choice, however I still feel that it obfuscates what could otherwise make for a more engaging listen.
This also happened to release on my birthday, so thank you for the amazing gift and keep up the great work, Caska!

Maybe I’m so lenient on artists changing their sound because... well even if I don’t listen to AA’s new stuff that much, I listen to so many different genres of music, like Idc if AA is classified as butt rock nowadays. If you can’t listen to different genres and enjoy them that's a you problem.
Maybe it’s just because I’ve been grown up on 80s pop, 90s Estonian pop, 80s rock, Middle Eastern dance music (?? i hope that’s a correct way to call it... my mom loves that stuff) and just Arabic music in passing, Russian 90s pop that both my parents and grandma liked,  LOL..., süldibändid (i can’t even translate that lmao that’s like our very own special music genre that they play at village parties n shit. like pop+country+folk+rock, but something feels off and wrong about it), then I started listening to mf NU-METAL out of all things, regular rock, msi (i cant even classify that...), like man i fucking LOVED Hollywood Undead, Korn and Papa Roach, as well as Mr Brightside but who DOESN’T love that??? Then actual goth music, emo/scene music, literally all flavours of it, even hyperpop gets added in the mix, in 2015 i loved lo-fi depression music (elvis depressedly, coma cinema, alex g), in 2020 i discovered yugoslavian 80s underground music from this 1 youtube guy who just keeps uploading stuff constantly (i love you Dronemf S.)  , i love lovejoy too and Marina was my queen back in the day and i will listen to doja cat and lil nas and idk some other popular pop music rapper like  ... GET SOME DIVERSITY IN YOUR MUSIC PEOPLE you can’t just listen to one fucking genre and think that that’s the end all be all of music!!! you’re BORING. like fuck off if i can listen to 5MIINUST  then you can listen to alone again by AA

♥ GOJII ♥ - CURRENTS
(EDM, Progressive House, Future Garage)
On their latest EP, Gojii explores future garage with an unexpected lushness, warm synths and peppy vocal samples driving their club-ready EDM tunes to peak euphoria. CURRENTS’ short length and uniform sound cuts some possibilities short, but what’s here is wonderful nonetheless.
☆☆☆½
Over the past few years, Gojii’s dream-infused dance music has made for some of the most entertaining and purely fun electronic music to grace the underground, primed for club listening with its sturdy drum programming and explosive synth leads but hiding a subtlety and sweetness  if you knew where to look. Their latest EP, CURRENTS, continues that hot streak with four more delightful garage jams, a short but uplifting listen where Gojii’s neon synths and thoughtful builds make both some of their best songs to date and another exciting, if brief, look at what a full album from them might look like in the near future - their music has changed quite a lot since 2020’s All My Heart, and seeing how each subsequent EP after it built off it only makes what they’ve done on CURRENTS that much more of a thrill. A brightly-hued mix of progressive house, melodic house, and the bubblier sides of garage and techno, CURRENTS’ party-ready sound doesn’t discount much of the complexity and depth Gojii’s music has taken advantage of since the start, slick breakdown sections and subtle but deeply felt changes in the drum programming keeping the EP fun all around without sacrificing the unique celestiality their music often has. BLOOM’s speedy techno groove and bouncy synth leads are great on their own, but it’s how they chop up a vocal sample and throw different synth arpeggiators in ways as the song slowly builds up to its glittery end section that makes the song so memorable and rewarding to dig into on repeat listens. There’s a similar sense of movement to VANISHING POINT and EVENT HORIZON, the former’s darker synth pads and heavier presence bringing a lovely thickness to the song even in its loudest moments while the latter’s pulsing arpeggiators and massive final minute of trance madness finds a perfect balance between trance euphoria and smoothly layered EDM bliss, intense enough to put you under Gojii’s spell but with a warmth and sweetness to it the whole way through. They know what makes their music click, and few moments on CURRENTS don’t take full advantage of Gojii’s marvelous production and ear for groovy dance tunes. There’s still a sense of fullness missing from their EP’s that simply can’t be matched by a full-length release - I can only imagine how wonderful a full album of BLOOM’s and EVENT HORIZON’s might be - but CURRENTS is a smashing success for Gojii regardless, another collection of bubbly dance tunes with as much vigor as they have complexity, the detailed inner workings of their prog-EDM fusions of garage, footwork, juke and more technically impressive and always a delight to listen to. At its core, CURRENTS is a collection of fun, joyful dance songs, and it’s impossible not to let that into your heart.

History & Evolution of DJing
DJing as an art been around way before the emergence of discotheques & drastically evolved since then and continues to do so influenced many contributing factors like changes in culture, ideologies, trends, tastes, technology and more.
The Birth & Progression of DJing (1930's - 1970's)
It all started in 1935, when American radio commentator Walter Winchell coined the term "disc jockey"; Shortly following that, the world's first DJ dance party was launched by radio DJ Jimmy Savile in 1943, he played Jazz music at London's Locarno Ballroom for dancers who danced to those records on a small dance floor under a strobe light.
The mid-1960s witnessed exponential growth in the number nightclubs and disco's in Europe and America; with the new trend many DJs from that era gained fame through their performances at these clubs. It is also in this decade when beat matching was made popular by the American club DJ Francis Grasso.
Moving on to the mid-1970s, when Hip-hop music and culture began to emerge from urban African Americans and Latinos in New York City. DJ Kool Herc began experimenting with DJing techniques at his parties in The Bronx which later became known as "breakbeat science". He was one of the early pioneers of hip hop music and culture.
The Golden Era for DJ's (1980's - Now)
The 1980s, DJs began using turntables and vinyl records to manipulate the sounds they were playing. This was a huge step forward for DJs and their audiences, as it meant they could mix together different songs by different artists into one continuous beat.
The 1990s saw the rise of house music—a genre of electronic music that was popularized by DJ Pierre and DJ Jellybean Benitez—as well as hip-hop, which also rose to prominence during this decade. In 2000, house music was popular but had lost some of its hold on the market; meanwhile, hip-hop remained popular but had lost some of its edge as well.
2020, While house music remains popular amongst millennials it has fallen out of favor with many young people as 120+ new genre's have emerged since the 1980's and along with it many new born sub-cultures. In the current day pop is king and that is slowly reviving disco music in the nightlife scene. Hip-hop suffered a nose dive as it fell out of favor with young people (though not necessarily everyone else), but it remains popular among older demographics like Generation X and Baby Boomers who remember when it first came onto the scene in the 1990s.
