I think when people think of mental illness and what helps, especially with things like anxiety and depression, the treatment involves pushing yourself. Pushing yourself to get out of bed, to exercise, to take a shower, to go out in public, to order your own food from the cashier, etc.
And because the mental health movement has grown so much, people think that's the default of ALL illnesses. That the only way someone will get better is if they push themselves. That practice makes perfect. That you'll become more comfortable or strong over time the more you do something.
But what people need to realize is, with physical disabilities and chronic illnesses, pushing yourself in most cases is DETRIMENTAL. Pushing yourself past your limits can lead to flare ups or further injury. That's why it's important to know your limits, how certain activities may affect your condition, and learn how to either adapt or get help to complete the activity in question.
Also, most of us are already pushing ourselves. Most of us don't have access to the help or equipment we need. Most of us live in places where we frequently encounter inaccessible obstacles. Most of us NEED to rest.
So please don't try to be our physical therapists or doctors. There are people specifically trained to help us navigate our own conditions and limitations. There are people trained to help us strengthen our body's resilience without causing flare-ups or injury. Do not tell us "it'll be good for you" or "you need the exercise" when we say something is too heavy or too far or when we say we need our mobility aid(s). Your friend with depression may need to be encouraged to get out of bed, but your friend with chronic illness definitely doesn't.
Respect our rest.

Apologize if you’ve fielded an ask or twenty about this before, but how do you think HL would take it if Vought hired a masseuse to come in to work on him once in a while. Is he touch-starved or touch-averse? or both lol? Is he averse to having to take his top off? Since his muscles probably don’t actually get sore from anything does he pretend they do to get certain types of contact? - 🥰
i do think he's both touch-starved and touch-averse! every so often the idea comes up that there isn't any good reason Homelander isn't regularly drowning in physical affection/sex given how rabid of a fanbase he has, and i think that comes down to several factors:
his brand! it doesn't fit his brand to be sleeping around, especially with fans. i'm willing to bet this was strongly discouraged by Madelyn, along with any other "deviant" behaviors.
his deadly combo of superiority/inferiority complex. from the first episode, Homelander doesn't care about human life. even though he craves the general concept of love and approval on a mass scale, individual lives simply don't matter to him. they're beneath him, and he has a pretty high level of disgust towards people. he doesn't like touching them without his gloves.
i headcanon Homelander to be demisexual. i really don't think he experiences the desire to be touched by specific people unless the person in question has elevated themselves in some way in his mind, or he's formed SOME level of an emotional connection/dependency, even if it's completely one sided/imaginary.
absolutely his body issues are a factor. barely seems to like getting naked with partners, let alone strangers.
when i wrote Eat Your Ego, it didn't matter that he sought her out as an escort. he still entered that encounter hostile until he could find something in his twisted psyche to elevate a human enough to deem them worthy of touching him. the sequence of events in my mind was more or less: step 1, initial physical attraction. step 2, projection. step 3, antagonize/determine worth. step 4, form an abrupt and unhealthy attachment based solely on delusion and wish fulfilment. step 5, profit??? live happily ever after?? still figuring that part out.
i feel like the same would apply to this situation. he definitely WANTS tactile comfort. he likes the idea of someone touching him with the sole intent of bringing him pleasure/helping him relax, even in a non-sexual context. but if he was put in some situation where he was directly told to have a massage for some reason and he did comply, he would be a huge asshole about it until he settled into it. like a cat who wants to be pet but keeps swatting and hissing every time you try because he's so damaged.
once he was settled though? that's HIS masseuse now. daily sessions. he's their only client.

in discussing bodily autonomy and ableism and stuff, some people need to understand that there could be a medication or therapy that could exponentially help someone’s condition, but disabled people are under no obligation to accept it

like if therapy and meds help you that’s so cool but it drives me insane how people treat those as some magical cure all that EVERYONE needs to seek out even though the psych industry is fucked and biased and not affordable and if trying to find a good therapist or find the right meds is doing nothing but causing you even more stress and anxiety even after you’ve been trying to get help for years than maybe it’s not worth it at that point

i absolutely love the permanent injury wincest fics on ao3 and my brain is going BUCKWILD thinking about possible plot points to write…
imagine. the car accident at the end of season 1, but sam ends up with severe injuries & brain damage. john still makes the deal for dean’s life. he whispers to dean that this was for the best, keep him safe, and if you need to, kill him, and dean knows he’s talking about sam, unresponsive and comatose in the other room. then john dies and leaves dean behind with sam. sam wakes up disoriented and confused. he’s lost a lot of speech ability, and use of his legs. after his dad dying in the hospital, dean is in a rush to get them both out before whatever got him gets around to them too.
so he takes sam to bobby’s. sam uses crutches and can’t form full sentences and has emotional outbursts at the littlest of things. it’s not the put together sam that dean knows, hell, it’s more like the whiny, teenage sam from his childhood who was full of piss and vinegar and too much teenage angst to contain. it’s the repressed rage that sam holds coming out all at once. dean realizes that sam is actually extremely angry and frustrated inside, and this new shift in his mental ability is taking a big toll on him and making him feel worthless.
dean just lost his father, and lost so much of his brother as well, but sam still keeps him grounded. when he’s not working on baby, he’s in the house, helping sam around, feeding him, clothing him, talking with him for hours on end to keep him occupied. he’s all dean has left.
bobby is worried. he tells dean to get sam medical attention, that he needs speech and physical therapy, that he can’t be there for sam 24/7. dean denies it all. he says that if he isn’t there for sam, no one will be, because they’re all each other has left. sam is all that dean has left and he’s not letting him get hurt again.
keep sammy safe, dean’s heart says, but there’s that terrifying reminder of his father’s last words, kill him if you have to. dean can’t even fucking fathom why his father would tell him such a thing. he wanted him to kill sweet little sammy, who can’t string together a sentence and asks dean to make him pb&j’s for lunch. that’s who sam is to him now; the little boy from his childhood. it gives him something to do. something to focus on. keep sammy safe. dean needs purpose, direction, a task in life, and now his father is dead and his brother is hurt and what else is he except the caretaker?
dean doesn’t understand why his father would say that until the psychic episodes start. sam has awful migraines and premonition nightmares that he wakes up from crying and screaming, incoherently babbling about what he saw. and when he gets too overwhelmed or nervous, he’ll curl up into a ball, or scream, or cry, and the room will go to chaos. bottles flying, windows breaking, tables rattling, and this awful feeling in the air like sam is trying to rip dean’s lungs out of his chest. dean’s the only one who can calm sam down during his episodes. he gets even more protective of sam, much to bobby’s displeasure.
at this point, bobby is starting to get really worried. sam isn’t getting any better, if anything, he’s getting worse, constantly stressed and on edge, physically exhausted, angry with the world and angry that his body and mind won’t do what he tells them to. he’s worried about dean. dean who spends all his time with his little brother, calling him sammy and kiddo as he dresses him and feeds him and wipes the tears off his cheeks. it makes bobby feel sick. there’s just this… strange look in dean’s eyes. it’s love, sure, but it’s also obsession. absolute captivation. he looks at sam like he’s the whole damn world, and bobby’s worried that as far as dean is concerned, he is.
dean knows that sam lost a lot of cognitive and emotional ability. it’s why he treats sam like little sammy from when they were kids— something sam hated at first but begrudgingly learnt to accept— and it’s why he’s able to be so gentle and sweet with him in a way he could never be with his sam from before. but the thing is, sam’s still sam. he’s big and he’s a pain in dean’s ass and he’s so damn beautiful that it makes dean feel sick inside. so he indulges a little. he touches sam, strokes him a little during washroom breaks, and sam likes it. he’s pent up and frustrated and all he knows is that dean is safety and good feelings so it only makes sense that dean is making him feel good in another way. and dean convinces himself that sam would have always wanted this, and maybe he had, but there’s no way to know for sure. all dean knows is that they’re both safe, and happy, and that’s all that matters.
of course, bobby eventually finds out about it. that’s when all Hell breaks loose, and shit hits the fan.
this idea has been rattling around in my brain for a long long time now so pls let me know if it’s something you’d be interested in reading and i’ll throw it on my wip pile…

the need to have "neurotypical" and "neurodivergent" be two completely different things with no grey area in between is a disservice to both groups. i would say every single person on this earth could qualify as neurodivergent if they bothered to go see a psychiatrist. its just that only certain ppl are going to be put in a situation where they cannot function and need a label to explain it bc society
#btw I am convinced that I am the only person who truly understands the field of psychiatry. or the lack of evidence to support one.#there are so many symptoms that are just the exact same thing but described in different ways and depending on the biases of whoever#diagnoses you You will end up with a completely different disorder!#there is no way to be objective about something as subjective as human experience#this is a vaguepost ab r/adhdwomen btw i love the group but also freshly diagnosed ppl be acting in ways.#being neurodivergent forces you to be more in touch with your own needs but every single person on this Earth would benefit from that#so please for the love of God teach the neurotypical people in your life to do that too#I also saw a post earlier about how shopping around 4 therapists should not exist because you don't shop around for surgeons or restaurants#and it made me so mad because you literally do shop around before therapists and for restaurants#and there are 1 million different subfields of therapy please for the love of God do not give up if CBT does not work for you.#if your therapist is so unskilled that they cannot help you because they cannot change the physical reality of your situation#then they are a bad therapist. they are bad at their job!#their job is not to make your situation better their job is to give u the ability to deal w the situation no matter how bad it is.#ryambles#my only sources are that i am mentally ill and have been in therapy since i was 14. but im right.#i meant to say for surgeons and restaurants but i was typing too fast. bc of the adhd. sorry.#i am reading all of this over and maybe it makes no sense but i dont care. read my post boy.

People really be like “uwu look at these quirky trans people born in the wrong bodies owo what a quirky lifestyle lol” like no bitch im in so much pain rn that i cant fucking get out of bed and my spine is so fucked up from slouching in order to cope with the dysphoria and ive been binding so much that its causing severe chest and stomach pains and I STILL KEEP DOING IT BECAUSE ITS GENUINELY BETTER THAN THE ALTERNATIVE
“Being born in the wrong body” is a fucking dehibilitating condition and i desperately need medical treatment for it.
#im not saying that being trans is a disorder or something#i do like being trans imean i wouldnt be the same person if i wasnt trans#but i just think that people need to realize that this isnt a fun or easy thing this shit is mentally emotionally and physically painful#and causes so many problems like omygod if i wasnt such an optimist i would be dead so long ago#being “born in the wrong body” or whatever is a lot more painful than just being mildly uncomfortable with social norms#For me at least#others are different and thats valid#But like#i can’t go to the fucking grocery store because of this dysphoria its just too much#trans is not a disorder…#but imean… some of yall would benefit from that kind of view#like any disorder- treatment needs differ from person to person#for some people its as simple as acknowledgement and some mild accommodations#meanwhile others may be in such high risk that they need surgery and prescription drug therapy#neither is more valid than the other#we all have needs that need to be respected and treated if we are to ever live healthy happy lives#why are yall so obsessed with mistreating people who are already in pain like fr first ableism now this shit#When you force your trans kids into clothes that make them dysphoric you’re not disiplining a bratty punk or protecting them from anything#You are not only ignoring an “accommodation” that your child needs to live a normal healthy happy life#But you are also adding to the pain of an already painful experience. You are choosing to amplify the sufferring and the limitations caused#Jesus chrsit im so tired my body hurts so much rn#I wrote this a while ago actually but i had it saved in my drafts and completely forgot about it
