Today's aesthetic: that specific era of video games right after doing 3D physics in real time became feasible but before game developers had learned when not to use it where sometimes you'd gently brush against the terrain slightly over some arbitrary velocity threshold and your character would immediately ragdoll like they'd been hit on the head.

Today I am thinking about Jason, who is fresh out of his coffin, catatonic and non-verbal. His mind is in a haze and in a constant terror most of the time, and when it isn't - when he manages to ground himself, to stop imagining Joker's laughter and the phantom screech of the crowbar - he can't bring himself to speak, because there is... smoke in his lungs. A fucking soot. Rare sounds and words that escape his mouth sound like a painful, inhuman shriek.

He vividly remembers screaming his lungs out in the coffin, though, as he woke up to realise that he was buried six feet under, locked away from the rest of the world. So, maybe it was the last drop - a last attempt to use his voice.

His next tries are too painful. And when his desperate cry for Bruce - for someone to call his dad - is getting ignored, pushed aside, Jason doesn't even want to try any more. What use it would be? No one listens to him anyway.

He is as good as dead.

Physics Sandbox

Fourth week of my Video Game Genre Guides!

Physics Sandbox! These are sandbox games that built around introducing simulations of physics onto the player's creations or environment! Many times these games are based on destruction, due to the satisfying feeling of watching things blow up or having physics simulated destruction. Here's what that would look like on a Genre Tree!

In terms of top level genres, Physics Sandbox is just a step below Sandbox, games about player creation and manipulation of things or environments. Here’s 5 Physics Sandboxes (in no particular order) and how I would categorize, or “tag”, them in pink!

Physics Sandbox, Immersive Sim // First-Person Shooter, Puzzle Platformer, 3D Platformer, First-Person Platformer, Physics Puzzle, Stealth Number 1 is Teardown! Tons of tags on this one for a crazy creative physics sandbox. If you want satisfying destruction you need to play this game, the whole world is made out of satisfying destructable voxels!

Physics Sandbox, Physics Puzzle Number 2 is Poly Bridge 2! If more games in this style were made, I think a Bridge Puzzle genre could be reasonable under Physics Sandbox and Physics Puzzle. Anyways, I think Poly Bridge 2 might be my favorite game of this type, and is super fun to watch. Shoutout to YouTuber Aliensrock for his Poly Bridge playthroughs!

Physics Sandbox, Space Flight Simulation, Vehicle Building Number 3 is Kerbal Space Program! This game was iconic and is a great example of a game where you are fighting against the physics. Building and launching a rocket is fun, but watching it crash and blow up is even more fun.

Physics Sandbox, Vehicle Simulation // Racing Number 4 is BeamNG.drive! A car based Physics Sandbox, this one was also iconic on YouTube and watching the amazing ways these car models could be destroyed is amazing. I believe this game is still played a lot to simulate real life cars!

Physics Sandbox, Ragdoll Torture Number 5 is People Playground. A very creative and interesting take on the Ragdoll Torture genre (I am not sure that is the most used name, might be looking into that soon), the genre of brutalizing innocent ragdolls like Interactive Buddy. This game is fun for any sadists that want to have a fun physics sandbox to demolish little ragdoll people in. That concludes my fourth Video Game Genres Guide! Thank you for reading!
