"Princess, where are you?!" The butler shouted through the thick forest but to no avail, the figure he was searching for didn't answer. A sigh of frustration escaped the old man's lips as he wiped his sweat off with his black sleeve. Glancing at his wristwatch, he returned to the palace without the young little princess he was searching for. Surely, he will be punished for the mistake.

The bushes rustled against each other as her small figure carefully jumped out from it. She stifled a giggle with her hand from being heard, causing it to come out as a muffle. Observing around, she ran through the quiet meadow, with butterflies following from behind. Pollen from the flowers stuck on her plain white skirt as she ran across the colourful flowers.

Exhirilation burst inside her as she rarely experienced freedom. She realised staying inside the huge palace with only dolls and plushies as companies in her room was tiresome. The descriptions and sketches of the outside world always managed to pick her interest. Varieties of flowers, butterflies running around and birds chirping. It was the same as she imagined it would be.

Her steps came to a halt when a low snore entered her ear. Curious, she followed the sound, eventually leading her to a stone with a pair of huge black wings..? She cocked her head to the side and slowly took a step approaching it. Arriving far enough, she saw how the wings moved in the movement of someone's breathing. Her hazelnut brown orbs widened seeing a hand peeking out of the wings. A long and beautiful hand, its nails were painted black like a woman but up close it appears it has visible veins popping out.

"A man in a forest..?What are you doing here alone, mister?"

She asked the figure as if it would reply. She settled in front of him and gently caressed his gigantic wings. The hand under the wings began moving, startling her a bit. The figure sat up on the flat stone, rubbing his eyes with his fingers to get rid of the sleepiness. The figure stares at her, eyes filled with confusion and interest in the young little princess.

"W-what are you doing here, little girl? It's dangerous." He asked with his hoarse voice. His wings folded on his back as he stretched, revealing a young man with a loosened white shirt and old black pants. His black hair was messy and covered his greyish eyes.

"Your wings are gorgeous, mister."

"My wings?" He stated in disbelief and turned at his wings, a small smile tugged on his pale pink lips. He touched the wing, mumbling 'thanks' to the girl. The girl came to him, sitting on his lap which caused the man to flinch at her reckless action but to think of it, she was a little girl after all. Her tiny hand tried to reach for his hair but to no avail, she kept grasping the air. Giggling at her attempt, he bends his head forward, allowing her to touch his hair. His cold heart melted at her doing. Rarely for him to have a soft spot for children mostly for curious girls like her.

She ruffled his hair with both of her hands, removing the grass stuck in his black hair.

"Done! Now, your hair looks much cleaner, mister,"

"Thank you again, little girl. Now, answer my question, what are you doing here, all alone? In a forest?"

She stayed silent for a moment, resting her finger under her chin, thinking of an answer.

"I'm bored living in the palace with my stuffed toys every day! Mommy never let me meet someone because she said it was dangerous for me to know about outsiders."

A palace she said..? His eyes widened as realisation hit. It's the king's daughter he was holding on to. Unconsciously, his wings spread widely, causing some of the fallen leaves around them to fly away. She clapped her hand in awe. He turned to the girl.

"You're bored. Want to visit my house, little flora?" She nodded and in a blink, they were up in the sky, heading far from their early location. The man landed on the ground after arriving in front of his cottage, telling the girl to unfold her eyes. In front of them was a small cottage made out of wood and yarn as the roof.

"Come on."

He entered the house and she followed him inside. The inside was simple - a kitchen, a living room with a fire chamber on the wall, an old teak door leading to a bedroom, and some portraits of someone hanging on the walls. All of them look aged.

"This place is awesome!! Can I come here often?" She asked, tone hinting full of hope. He sighed as he brought two cups of tea in his grip, placing one in front of her and sitting across from her. She carefully took the cup, blowing it slowly before sipping the tea.

"You can, only if your mother allows you."

Hearing his answer, she immediately sulked.

"Mommy certainly wouldn't allow it. She's too strict and busy with Daddy too."

She crossed her arm across her chest, lips pouting. Again, the man couldn't resist her cute charms and it was still incredible for him how this girl could break the ice in his heart.

"Then, sure. You can come here. Do you like reading perhaps? I have tons of books left unread on the shelf."

"Yes yes!! I love books and the smell of them."

The man emerged. He grabbed some books that might be suitable and handed them to her. She gasped and started flipping through the pages, engrossing herself with the story. Minutes passed and the man just stared at her reading through each sentence in the book. A few giddily giggles escaped her lips.

"Reading books is the only way I can forget being alone, stuck in the palace. I feel like I'm not in that dim room when I read." She blurted out, raising her gaze and meeting his eyes.

"Me too. It helps me forget my pain."

"Glad I have someone who thinks the same as me."

She laughed and continued reading. Hours passed and the sun began hiding behind the horizon, welcoming the moon. He who noticed the change quickly spoke up

"It's getting late, little flora. Let's go home, yeah?" She nodded vigorously, shutting the book close, hugging it tightly to her chest.

"Can I borrow this book, mister?"

"Of course, you can. Let's go, your parents must be worried."

She smiled and hugged his legs. The sunset shone on his wings, revealing a big scar on them. She noticed it but didn't tell him about it. She closed her eyes and instantaneously, they arrived at the palace. She let go of his legs, thanking him.

"By the way, Mister, what's your name?" He sent the small girl a sweet smile and crouched to her level. He pinched her nose softly

"My name is Chan, Bang Chan. If you want to meet me again tomorrow, pick up the black feather, okay little flora? Goodbye."

After the last sentence, he disappeared into thin air, leaving only a black feather. She picked it up and heard heavy footsteps coming toward her. Spinning her body around, she was greeted by the guard, her dad and her mother. Her mother rushed to her, taking the small girl into her arms as tears flowed down. She just smiled at her father.

"Daddy! I found a new friend today! He's so kind!" She uttered cheerfully, showing the book and the feather she was holding. The king's face furrowed at the sight - no, not the book but the black feather. He knew who it was from.

Some very personal head cannons I have for dragons in general that I'm going to apply to Dragon Gambit

So being an animal nerd I know a lot of things about the animal world and have just had some general experiences growing up cuz I was a dragon kid instead of a unicorn kid or a wolf kid or something. So I have collected random head cannons over the years about dragons either relating to things in the natural world or just things I picked up while growing up and I'm going to smoosh them on to Gambit in this AU. Enjoy:

1. Dragons like shiny things because it helps warm up their bellies when light reflects off of them also metal conducts heat a lot better so again nice and warm. Because dragons are less sensitive to heat as in the burning sensation as I've mentioned before: please imagine Gambit using a hot slide on a summer day in his Dragon form to warm himself up. Rogue is very confused as to how he's not literally dying or being cooked alive but he assures her he's fine.

2. When I was growing up there was this like animatronic at this theme park that was fantasy themed called the pumpkin eating dragon and they would like have these shows with him that were sort of little kitty comedy act and then they would feed him pumpkins between jokes and the kids love watching him crush them so now it's just seared into my mind that yes dragons love pumpkins they can't get enough of them. So imagine the x men decorating for Halloween and Gambit is in charge of pumpkin carving. He does a great job of it even gets all the pumpkin seeds separated for baking into a delicious treat. But no one sees the pumpkin insides or the excess rinds go into the trash or anything....then Jubilee finds Gambit cooking it all in a mixing pot like a soup with brown sugar, a bit of butter, vanilla, maple syrup, hazelnut, and cinnamon. He tries to insist that "it's just really good guys try it" but none of them want to. Not even rogue is willing. He ends up eating the whole thing and none of them can look at him the same way again.

Storm and jean think it certainly smells good but Storm is apprehensive to try it. Growing up in Africa she has never had anything pumpkin before and she knows things like pumpkin pie aren't made from the same kind of pumpkins as Halloween ones. And jean refuses to eat them because she's grown up being told and believing pumpkin guts are gross. The only other person willing to try it is Bobby but he will never admit to the other x men he has eaten Halloween pumpkin.

3. Lots of reptiles don't have great hearing but can feel vibrations in the air and ground through their jaw bones, particularly snakes, because the bones that we have in our ears are actually still part of their jaws. So frustratingly for many people, including Gambit who does not understand it himself, he can "hear" where people are in the room and it's really hard to sneak up on him, but you may have to repeat yourself several times to get his attention.

Also he cannot stand pop rocks and a lot of other super fizzy things. He says that "it feels like something is screaming in my mouth" and nobody except storm and jean seem to get what he means.

4. Bearded dragons are a species of reptile and they go crazy for dandelions and bee pollen. I like thinking dragons like these things too so Gambit having to avoid munching on very tempting looking dandelion flowers in public and him secretly sprinkling bee pollen on his food. No one knows what it is when they catch him doing this. Rogue secretly finds the jar in his room later with the picture of the beardie on it and swears to never tell a soul, but is very relieved.

Things stay under wraps for a bit till Scott finds a baggie of the stuff in jean's things, and he freaks out thinking Gambit got Jean hooked on something and Gambit has to come clean with the bottle of Bee pollen.

i love watching buds open, ive been staring at these every day for weeks- the way they start to swell up, then turn green, then get little cracks in them, and then tiny baby leaves pop out one at a time and inflate way bigger than you think they ever could- its v fun :3

i just planted these like a month ago- anygays hazelnuts are literally so wonderful. theyre one of THE best native plants for pollinators bc of how many caterpillars they feed (considered a keystone species) and they make loads of silly little catkins covered in pollen in super duper early spring, which is rlly important for bees as they wake up from hibernation. also their nuts are v yummy :3 (the squirrels agree) (and the birds)

they dont just make food either - you can coppice them and use the wood for lots of stuff, especially basketry/weaving bc the branches are rlly bendy (coppicing is literally The Coolest btw itll probably get its own post). and the nuts can make oil, butter, flour, etc

hazelnuts are really important in a lot of cultures too, especially in europe where theyve been a staple food for many thousands of years (not as much anymore but still) and they can grow a lot of Very yummy mycorrhizal fungi like truffles and chanterelles - v good way to grow two things at once and help them both thrive because of it

hazelnuts are very very adaptable, ppl have been growing them since literally the stone age, and they only take about three years to make nuts after you plant them. so go plant some nuts!!! theres no reason not to!!! u can find somewhere i promise!!! rahhh

we still need to clean the house (still doing basement maintenance) and i need to find adhd friendly ways to clean frequently enough to eliminate all my OTHER environmental allergies first bc i am allergic to cats technically but if/when i get a new cat i cant just LEAVE THEM smh

brief allergy history overview for context:

allergic to dust, pollen (esp ragweed), cat and dog dander, mold, cigarette smoke apparently?? a couple of other things supposedly idr i got dx'd in 1999

was on allergy meds of various kinds from age 5 to present plus allergy shots starting every 2 weeks graduating to every month. meds i REMEMBER taking (remember i started at age 5.): zyrtec twice a day rx until it went otc (idr dosage), rhinocort (idr if rx or otc). stopped that at some point idr when or why. rx patanol twice a day. saline nose spray twice a day. allergy shots never make me react more than some itchiness.

got the cat in 8th grade. allergist was NOT happy about it. reaction was itchy eyes for like 2 weeks that eventually stopped.

went to college in early 2010s. allergist said i dont need shots anymore. no access to allergist meant i stopped using the patanol unless my eyes got SUPER itchy because at the time it was rx only. continued to take otc generic zyrtec 10mg twice a day. (i was on liquid until like high school bc i couldnt swallow pills so when i switched to pills i continued the same dosage which...is HONESTLY pediatric now that i think about it, but even at 18 it still worked? i was still very skinny though)

then 3 years into college i started getting acid reflux so bad i couldn't eat plain lettuce. got an endoscopy done. got dx'd with eosinophilic esophagitis. got put on 40mg sodium pantoprazole (insurance would not cover nexium.) once a day. (COINCIDENTALLY GAINED A LOT OF WEIGHT AFTER THIS HMM)

went back to same allergist i have been seeing since i was 5. got a skin test done. was told i was MORE reactive (especially to cat :() than i was in 1999...all from 3 years without allergy shots? at least on the skin test. started shots again. got blood tested for food allergies. results seem to fluctuate whether i ate that thing before testing (ie whether it comes up as higher than what the bloodwork calls "level 0/equivocal") two constant and consistent results are hazelnuts and carrots (which have ALWAYS given me acid reflux)

i go back to gi with these results. they tell me i might have GERD. (allergist, when told of my eosinic dx, says "ugh i hope not, you need a liquid diet to deal with that."). second endoscopy after a month on the proton pump inhibitor. acid damage is healing. they tell me its safe to stay on pantoprazole long term.

fast forward to today, 9 years later. i take 10 mg of zyrtec otc twice a day. i tried flonase, did nothing. allegra is too hard to swallow. getting monthly allergy shots. rinse my nose out with saline when i remember to. take otc patanol extra strength once a day (package says to and its easier to remember than twice a day). i skip pantoprazole until the acid reflux gets very bad because 1. makes me gain weight 2. unsure about how safe it is long term 3. i just forget sometimes. i stopped eating all food allergens EXCEPT dairy because whether whey shows up as an ige allergy seems to fluctuate and also i love cheese. i am working on it.

SYMPTOMS, though: constant post nasal drip. (no change from childhood.) nose is stuffier but managed with saline. general constant low level cold symptoms (stuffy nose, very rare slight cough) eyes water only if i forget to use eyedrops. sometimes i get itchy but no hives, no redness. acid reflux when i skip the ppi or eat carrots. i gave up nutella entirely because nut allergies can apparently get worse out of the blue very fast. ragweed season gives me watery eyes and stuffy nose almost 24/7 but no wheezing or breathing issues. ANIMAL DANDER, my biggest concern, gives me itchy watery eyes DEPENDING on how clean the environment is. (i was completely fine in a small house for 12 hours with 4 cats and 3 dogs, fine in my sister's house for 6-8 hours with a shibe, but not fine in a house with 3 cats thats never vaccuumed, and not fine in my sister's car that had no shibe in it.) (not fine is still just minor eye symptoms)

cat died in 2017 so i no longer have long term exposure but dander supposedly stays in the house right? towards the end of his life, we let him in my previously off limits room that had a knockoff hepa filter running 24/7 with no issues. he was not in my room 24/7. currently i have a purezone i think??? hepa filter running 8-6 hours a day because the blue light is required for it to function. i try to change it every 3 months but sometimes i forget.

i really want another cat...even though my allergist is of the "you shouldn't be exposing yourself to any allergens on purpose" mentality. she DOES think mcas exists. she also said its safe to take 10mg cetirizine hcl 4x a day. people tell me allergies can get worse with exposure over time but then how would allergy shots work?

things i wonder about and will ask her next appointment: i am no longer 18 and 90lbs soaking wet- is 10mg of zyrtec once a day enough? did i build a tolerance? should i go back to twice a day?

my current goals:

i will use saline more often. vaccuum and dust more. keep my air filter running 24/7. IF i get a cat, no access to my room ever. i will feed it that purina food scientifically proven to lower the amount of allergen in their dander.

my big fear is 1. i have mcas which makes any allergy exposure a risk 2. people are correct unfortunately and allergy exposure DOES make it worse and that getting a cat now will give me anaphylaxis in the future :( (but then how do allergy shots work???)

i have never experienced anaphylaxis. i have never needed an epi pen. i never needed benadryl.i still don't react to the allergy shots. reactions to pet dander are mild annoying itchy eyes that depend on how clean the area is and also don't always last for the entire time i am exposed anyway. but my bloodwork shows inflammation a lot but no doctor has ever been concerned.

is this mcas??? it kind of looks more like i got sloppy with cleaning and med taking and also possibly built up a tolerance to zyrtec/gained enough weight that 10mg/a day is not enough anymore? allegra did nothing when i switched but i was also taking it 1x a day

my PLAN was get on top of every other allergen so that cat dander is the only thing i am exposed to on a daily basis BUT if this looks more like my allergies overall are just getting worse, i don't want to risk getting a cat just to have to rehome it.

Dinner on Saturday 10/29/2022

While visiting the Finger Lakes region of NYS, we came across this hidden gem of a restaurant in Trumansburg. We ate so well there the night before and our only regret was that we didn’t get to try the other items on the menu. We decided to correct that culinary injustice by returning for dinner the following night.

Two items were so good the previous night that they warranted a do-over: the badger flame beet salad which I had described as a “deconstructed borscht”, and the savoury chichen liver stuffed profiteroles. I can confirm that they were as good, if not better, the second time around.

As main course, I had the pork schnitzel, served with spicy greens, shaved kohlrabi, and pickled apple. It was deliciously crispy and well balanced by the brightness of the accompanying greens and apple.

As a rich side dish, I tried the roasted oyster mushrooms with soft egg, cauliflower purée, whipped egg sauce and chives. It was an egg cloud above the smoky umami of the mushrooms.

The meal was rounded out with a dessert of honey panna cotta served with a mead granita topping and a bee pollen crisp: not too sweet, refreshing, satisfying.

Throughout the meal, I found myself eating and chewing slowly to prolong the gustatory pleasure.

My taste buds were singing Madonna’s “Like a prayer”.

hold on I was gonna write a tag about this but I wanna but the graph in here. if you have oral food sensitivities and also have pollen allergies (tree or grass pollen), there’s a pretty high possibility that you’re having a cross reaction to fruit, vegetables, or nuts from your pollen allergy. it’s generally an oral sensitivity (causes itchiness in the gums and on the tongue, and sometimes swelling of the gums if you’re having a strong reaction) and not a true allergy but it does improve your quality of life to cut down on stuff you react to. like you’re gonna be more comfortable and it’s nice to take care of yourself.

birch pollen allergy may lead to cross reactions to:

these sensitivities may be of differing strengths and often with oral sensitivities you’ll be fine as long as the fruit or vegetable is cooked, for example I grew up unable to eat apples but could eat apple pie, apple sauce, apple juice, etc. op’s husband seems to be dealing with a genuine allergy though, in which case cooking often doesn’t make a difference depending on the strength of the allergy. if you’ve always felt averse towards a typical food bc it’s uncomfortable to eat you may have at the very least a sensitivity.

PSA: tomatoes are not spicy. Tomatoes and tomato products should not be spicy. Pizza sauce isn’t inherently spicy. Tomato-based pasta sauce is not spicy. Ketchup is NOT spicy.

If tomatoes are spicy, you have an allergy to tomatoes.
