Your gifset about road to Eldorado makes me think of apocalypto (2006) and it has most of the same issues. I had to watch it for my class on depictions of indigenous people in film when I was minoring in Native American Studies and oof. It was a hard one to watch for so many reasons, no least of which were the racism and general bullshit but just how violent the movie was as well. But it's a Mel Gibson movie so I mean, is any surprised?

But the class itself was interesting and exhausting because it was mostly.white students and like 3 ndn students, myself included debating the depictions of natives in media.

(I think this was also the same class in which a white student told me that if someone doesnt have native DNA on a genetic test like ancestry then they arent native. The professor who was native shut that down but yikes)

Anyway bless you for doing the Creator's work and putting down the bullshit you get for telling the truth

So many Indigenous studies classes too can be so tedious for the above reasons like ugh. The White students never seem to take racism discussions seriously half the time & say shit like "Well, I didn't think it was racist". One time a White student stood up for a racist white character in a short story we read & said they didn't think the racist character was racist, even though that was the entire plot & point of the short story? Yikes. Im sorry you had to deal with that!

Mel Gibson is like the antichrist of historical films, because of how badly he fucks up the history. Its to the point that it might as well be alternative history films or historical fantasy because of how much he changes. But with Apolcalypto specifically, a lot of people think it must be really authentic because 1. The use of Yucatec Maya throughout the film 2. People not really knowing about Native history, & 3. People not being able to tell the difference between the Maya & the Mexica.

One of the things I hate most about Apocalypto is even shown at the beginning of the movie where the quote sets the tone for the rest of the movie that basically implies that it was Indigenous people's own fault for being colonized. Aside from this being already stupid & racist, it's wrong because he seems to be suggesting the end of the classic Maya collapse, which happened like 600 years before the arrival of the Spanish, so those two things are NOT related at all & can't be used to justify colonization??

The film is really wishy washy about what time period it's supposed to be given the influences (like there's Post-Classic hairstyles mixed in with Classic period hairstyles, some of the art looks PRECLASSIC Maya, & a bunch of other plotpoints that point to various time periods). Apocalypto does NOT get enough flack for its dumb depiction of the Maya, and Mel Gibson is an idiot.

And thank you :) I hope Road to El Dorado gets some needed hate & criticism for how it handled Native people because it is WAY too beloved considering its racism.

The docuseries #TheJinx on HBO Max has one of the biggest “oh shit” mic drop moments at the end of the last episode that I’ve ever seen in a piece of media. Definitely worth watching.

The #MelGibson film #Apocalypto inspired the song “I Am Jaguar Paw,” in which the main character's name is Jaguar Paw. Sadly, that movie flew under the radar because of its subtitles and mixed critic reviews. In my opinion, it’s one of the most gut wrenching, intense films ever made, and it deserves to have been seen by everyone.

The intro of “I Am Jaguar Paw” sets the stage of someone on their last legs. The heavy breathing is mixed with machinery audio to make it sound more disturbing (diverging from the historic setting of Apocalypto, but staying true to its focus on the struggle to survive). Clearly, with sounds of machinery / computer equipment, this person is being assisted in survival.

The intro is around 40 seconds, which is a good way to lose listeners before the song begins. Nonetheless, this has remained one of the more popular songs on GoBoy 2. Had the intro been removed, maybe it'd be the most popular.

The breakdown at 1m 15s represents a different scenario. It's loud and violent, representing an able-bodied person fighting for their life. Against what? An animal? Serial killer? Heavy object that has crushed their legs? That's up to the listener.

Musically, this song is meant to cover a wide spectrum of styles, from the sound design intro, to the violent breakdown, to the calm piano and synth segment at 3m 34s. A journey of sorts.

Most of the screamo vocals on this album were recorded in my first car, a hatchback Toyota Yaris. I constructed a makeshift mobile studio and drove to an area where no one would hear me scream my guts out (excerpt from post 26).

At the time of making ”I Am Jaguar Paw,” the #metalcore genre was an enormous passion of mine. That said, the politics of forming and maintaining a metalcore band was something that I had experienced in the past, and I didn’t want to experience it again, especially after the fallout from the N3RD live band (explained in post 15). Rather than recruiting a drummer and guitarist for the metalcore inspired breakdowns in “I Am Jaguar Paw,” the manipulation of an electronic beat and dubstep wobble bass seemed like a more optimal route, as it would only require computer / DJ equipment for live shows, thus allowing me to maintain independence and creative freedom. This idea of using wobble bass instead of guitars for metalcore-esque breakdowns would be utilized for “I Am Jaguar Paw,” along with other songs on GoBoy 1 and 2 (excerpts from post 18).

The wobble bass was created by automating rapid changes in the formant of a techno synth.

Regarding the change from pop music to mostly instrumental music in GoBoy 2: “Throwback (Song 23)” (and it’s music video) enraged my relatives, whom I grew up in a neighborhood with, and who had tremendous influence over my life at the time (explained in post 23). A frenzy of angry emails, metaphorical pitchforks, torches, hulk rage. Being a young, neurotic kid, the backlash from them was too much for me to handle at the time, and to exit their spotlight, I halted further production of pop songs and ultimately pulled the music video and songs 1-23 (GoBoy 1) from the internet (excerpts from post 23).

To the creative kids who find themselves surrounded by people who want to halt or control their creative endeavors, best of luck. I want to say “find a way out,” but that might result in further deterioration of your creative output. If you were born into an environment where you’re free to explore your creativity without constraints, you’ll never know how lucky you are (excerpts from post 23).

After the “Throwback” debacle, focus would be shifted towards creating instrumental songs that would fly under the radar (GoBoy 2, songs 24-35). Fly under the radar they did. Following GoBoy 2, I quit music for seven years. Songs 1-23 wouldn't be reuploaded until 2020. Why does this matter? It doesn't (excerpts from post 23).

Ambivalent Conquests: Maya and Spaniard in Yucatan, 1517-1570

This August Fatima and I are heading to Tulum, Mexico. As I very much love to travel, I also like to research the historical significance of the places I visit. The Yucatan in Mexico has no shortage of this.

The first book I have read is Ambivalent Conquests: Maya and Spaniard in Yucatan, 1517-1570 by Inga Clendinnen.

The book is split in two. The first section gives the richly documented perspective of the Spanish conquistadors and the second attempts to give a Mayan perspective cobbled together from historical accounts and archeology. There is little to go on for the Mayans because the Spanish purposely destroyed most of their historical writings and artifacts.

Human Sacrifice

I have been quite fascinated recently by the history of first contacts. Every account I read is soaked in blood. Humans can be truly ugly and violent creatures. Ironically, this violence is primarily motivated by religion. It should be noted that the Spanish were extremely savage in their treatment of the so-called “savages”. Still, most fascinating is the human and animal sacrifices practiced by the Maya.

Diego de Landa, a Franciscan monk, was in charge of bringing the Roman Catholic faith to the Maya peoples after the Spanish conquest of Yucatán. In 1562 he lead an inquisition over the Mayans, torturing them to confess idolatry and human sacrifices. As Clendinnen points out in her book, many confessions were fabricated in order to prevent further torturing. One such confession yielded this ‘supposed’ eyewitness account of the human sacrifice of a young boy:

Diego Peche, chief, spoke to the one they wanted to kill, who was weeping, 'Strengthen and console yourself because what we are doing to you now is not an evil thing nor are we casting you into an evil place or into hell, but to heaven and to paradise according to the customs of our ancestors..' And to this the boy they wanted to kill replied, 'Do what you wish, for god who is in heaven will help me.' … And so they untied the youth and threw him down to the floor on to the mat, and the ah-kins [chiefs] put down the candle they were holding and… [they] threw him on his back and they seized him by the feet and hands, and Pedro Euan came and took up the flint knife and with it struck open his side to the left of the heart, and when it was opened he seized hold of the heart and with the same knife cut away the entrails [arteries] and gave the heart to the ah-kin, Gaspar Chim who lifted it on high having first given it two little cuts in the shape of the cross, and this witness does not know what part it was he took out of it, and put in the mouth of the greatest of the idols there which was called Itzamna.

Had a great time watching Tenacious D with my buddy AJ on New Years Eve at The Joint @ Las Vegas, NV. Above is my recording of the D doing the New Year’s countdown with Sasquatch! These boys were so damn amazing. I was singing along with all of their greatest hits (which was the second half of their concert). The first part was “Post-Apocalypto” which was an experience to behold. It had static illustrations where the D saved the world again from just being awesome. But, man, JB and KG’s bellies on display were amazing enough. :P Speaking of bellies, you have to go straight here.
