This book has been a work in progress for over twenty-five years—a labour of thought, reflection, and political introspection that has evolved alongside the tumultuous shifts in American leadership and global complicity, complacency and righteous indignation. It calls on the thoughts, impressions and suspicions of a profoundly personal journey through the ever-changing political landscape, beginning with the final years of the Clinton administration and traversing the presidencies of George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden. During this period, I have closely observed how each administration has reshaped the fabric of American politics and the global political order, with a particular emphasis on the dynamics of the Atlantic world. This narrative is forged in real-time, reflecting on past events and a window into the forces that continue to shape, colour and define our collective future.

The narrative extends to the current state of American politics under Joe Biden’s recent presidency and again with Trump, featuring Elon Musk’s unexpected and surreal figure—an unelected individual whose influence in the U.S. has raised eyebrows. Musk’s prominence has led some to dub him the “First Baby of the U.S.,” a playful yet pointed reference to his outsized influence and his peculiar role in the American political arena. Musk’s unusual relationship with the political landscape is further complicated by his bizarre association with former and current President Donald Trump. Musk, whom some have mockingly referred to as the “adopted son of Agent Orange,” a nickname for Trump himself. Through these shifting tides of power and personalities, this book seeks to provide an insightful, nuanced, and critical examination of my evolving political education in an age of uncertainty and extraordinary change.

the dynamic of demigods thinking which other demigod is the most powerful is always amusing to me because. like, we know the big 3 kids are all the most powerful. That's just a fact of their universe. And then we know nearly every character views Percy as the strongest demigod, and most people are very rightfully intimidated by him.

and you look at the powers of the Big 3 kids and there's Percy, but then you realize Nico is just kind of objectively more powerful than him but simply chooses to hang out in Percy's shadow like he's Percy's scary dog privileges. Like, the two of them are pretty equally capable of causing multiple different apocalypses. Nico just also has like four different instakill powers and it's not like he doesn't use them. He very much uses them! Not infrequently, even! And they don't seem to take a significant amount of energy from him! And other demigods are pretty intimidated by both of them! But Nico makes a conscious point to keep his cards close to his chest and not let on exactly how dangerous and scary he can be if he wants to. People are already scared enough of him without knowing anything about him and he doesn't like that. Percy doesn't think about that nearly as much, and so usually just goes in guns blazing and that's part of why he's considered a wildcard. And then Nico himself puts Percy on a pedestal, so those who do know more about Nico's abilities then presume Nico knows something they don't about Percy that implies Percy is even stronger than him.

And even on a meta level Nico's narrative role requires him to be functionally more powerful than Percy, because he very often serves the purpose of getting Percy out of situations he can't handle on his own. That's just part of his function as a character! But also narratively he can't overshadow Percy so he just takes a backseat of his own accord and that's very amusing to me.

Things are bad and terrible and stupid but at least there's bugs and sweet fruit and queer little podcasts and the sky changes colour at dusk and dawn. I can go to a park and meet a dog. My conditioner smells like fake strawberries. My houseplants and herbs still grow, despite the weather outside. There's time for nature documentaries and solo TTRPGs and library books before bed and the birds still sing in the morning. And I still have the ability to make the rest of it just a tiny bit less bad and terrible and stupid.

"Clean energy investment manager Greenbacker Renewable Energy has secured $950 million to build what will be New York State’s largest solar farm.

Greenbacker acquired the 500-megawatt (MW) Cider project from renewable energy developer Hecate Energy. Work started in October [2024], and the project is expected to come online in 2026.

Hecate announced on February 3 that the New York Office of Renewable Energy Siting and Transmission (ORES) has now formally issued a siting permit and a formal notice to proceed with construction...

Cider will sit on approximately 2,500 acres of land in Genesee County, east of Buffalo, where it began construction in late 2024. The project is expected to generate enough annual clean electricity to power around 120,000 New York households.

Greenbacker’s Cider project is one of 23 large-scale clean energy developments awarded contracts in December by the New York State Energy and Research Development Authority (NYSERDA). New York has set a goal of sourcing 70% of its electricity from clean energy by 2030.

The Solar Energy Industries Association ranks New York 8th nationally for solar capacity. With 6,493 megawatts, it has enough solar to power 1,127,865 homes. It’s expected to move to 5th place in five years."

It will forever be hilarious to me that Disney wanted so fucking bad to make a Wicked movie — but couldn't get the rights from Universal — that they literally spent billions upon billions of dollars making SEVEN different films (and a whole season of television; not even including their sequels and spinoffs) more than one of which they even got Idina and Kristen to be in based on the stripped-down premise of "what if the Stock Female Antagonist™ was secretly the Misunderstood Angsty Girlboss Heroine™ all along?" (because Disney execs don't actually care about Wicked, they just saw Green, said "hey! if we can't get the real thing, why not use Our Own (and/or Public Domain) characters?" and simply followed the Marketing Department Road all the way to the bank).

Less funny is the fact they were so successful at it — regardless of the merits (or lack thereof) of any of those projects — that it ended up getting the production of the actual Wicked movie delayed by more than a decade (because it would ironically have looked like a copycat and probably faded into the background if it had come out back when Disney was pumping out knockoffs every fucking year).
