genuine question, do you like maths?? i have a vague feeling i saw your post of tags or something that said something about it but i cannot figure out if it was in fact you or if it was even positive ahahah
Yeah that was me! I don't go looking for math problems, but when I happen to do them, I tend to enjoy it. Wasn't always this way ā elementary school math was about speed and memorization and I hated that ā but I had a really good teacher in upper secondary school, and it became about creative problem solving. It feels the same as writing a poem in meter or managing to untangle a really bad knot in a ball of yarn.
#i can't do math in my head or memorize formulas#and i'm not preciseā which is bad for questions that are only numbers. like. 5+6=? type of stuff#because if all you need to is write the final answerā then if that answer is wrongā youve failed. don't get the points for the exam question#but! upper secondary school math! my beloved! (specifically lyhyt matikkaā idk what pitkƤ is like)#there's a book that has all the formulas in it and you can use it and look them up even during exams. no memorization#it doesn't explain *how* the formulas are used but still#and there was more time than there ever was in my previous schools. and finishing fast did not mean you were better. i could take my time#and there were so many... worded questions? like instead of pure numbers they present the problem to you in words. phrases. prose#here is a situation. solve it#and you get to choose HOW to solve it#sometimes i could not remember how a formula workedā or hadn't quite figured out a recently taught technique yet#and i just. figured out a different way to solve the problem#can't remember the answer to 5x8? let's count 5+5+5+5+5+5+5+5 instead#38/7? lets draw 38 little balls in the margin and separate them into groups of 7 and see how many there are and how many strays get left out#like that but applied to lots of stuff#and it was enougj! it was fine! it was a valid way to solve it! i got the right answer!#unless i messed something up! a + turned into a - by accident somewhere in the middle of the equation#but! part of this level of math was that it was encouraged to write our whole thought process down#and iā unable to do it off the paper anyway#i wrote down ALL OF IT#and the teacher saw where i went wrong and that it was little precision things but that i had the techniques down and#i still got most of the points for those questions instead of losing everything because of an incorrect number at the end#these differences have meant everything#math is puzzles. puzzles can be fun#some of my first memories of math class are of me sobbing under my desk#i cried a few tears in all my matriculation exams tooā even for my favourite subjects. but not math#one of the most important questions was a geometry one. i shine in that area#i grinned doing it

like many others i am having issues receiving my adhd medication right now but the main thing that it does for me is enable me to not be constantly very legitimately angry about real things that i have good reason to be mad about, so it just feels like this is in the corner of my vision at all times

Hi Pia! I was curious, as I understand, this story was written long time ago? Did you edit it with almost 10 years of practice on writing since 2014 now? And more in general, do you feel like writing is easier or not withos much practice (I read about smut, that it is harder now, but in general - worldbuilding, character creation and so on) ?
Hi hi anon!
Yeah the story was first drafted in 2014, and has gone through big edits since then (the latest being 2017, though I did some cursory stuff this year as well to just double check that it's not terrible).
Tbh, prior to 2014 I was writing like... very serious award winning short stories with tragic endings and winning awards for them, so I'm moderately confident the story is readable. I've been writing novels (for fun mostly) since 1995. And I have a university education in writing that started in 1999.
My fanfiction/serial style is very different to my 'I'm writing a book / I'm writing a short story' style.
I think it will feel different to my serials because I wrote it like a book, there's less sprawling character exploration, and the pacing is much, much tighter. There's a lot more focus on plot, and folks used to my serials might feel like the story ends really quickly! Because it's like much shorter (100k) than my serials.
If anything, I think these are the things to watch out for in Tradewinds:
100k novel means much tighter pacing and prose, and often very little time for too much character reflection.
Possibly not as much character exploration as people are used to from me (though there's still some!)
More plotting
Less smut, and the smut is also more 'vanilla' than what I normally write, because at the time I was a lot more wary about putting BDSM into the market. There are power dynamics though (i.e. a vibe where one character 'feels' more submissive to the other)
Robust scene-setting (i.e. description, place, anchoring)
Lively dialogue
I actually think I was probably a better literary writer back in the 00s but it wasn't much fun for me. I quit writing for a while and then picked it back up again to write fanfiction, which was easier and more relaxed for me. (And still is! The Ice Plague is an exception to that because it had more robust plotting and was structure more...formally.)
I honestly think writing gets easier or harder depending on the project and writing style involved.
Some writing gets easier with time, some doesn't. Sometimes that will flip or switch. Sometimes one thing is easy for years and then becomes harder with certain stories.
It was Gene Wolfe who said:
"You never learn how to write a novel. You just learn how to write the novel that you're writing."
And yeah, I tend to believe for the most part that's true with how hard or easy something is. How ambitious a project is, its genre, its length, its complexity can all play into that.
I pick easier projects as my main projects right now, but I have hard projects coming up too!
I would say overall writing does become "easier" in the sense that foundational skills become second nature (I know how to build a character and their dialogue now without thinking about it, and while there's always more to learn, I can now start in a place of just knowing how to do that instead of knowing I need to learn how to do that), but that the stories themselves will still pose unique challenges to a writer.
Er so TL;DR yes writing for me is easier but I'm choosing easier things to write, and sometimes it's still very hard!!!
#asks and answers#pia on writing#learning the foundational skills of writing#which is done best through practicing writing#is the best way to learn and internalise those skills imho#once you have those#writing gets harder not because you don't know how to do it#but because you start writing more complex stories#that can require more complex problem solving techniques#administrator gwyn wants this in the queue

wiress with cats.
#thatās it thatās the post#im kidding iām going to rant in the tags now#wiress had a cat before her games who was a descendant of the cat her mother had. basically thereās a whole family tree for these cats.#and when her cat dies after she wins the cat already had three kittens.#beetee has beef with these cats. like iām not kidding. the first time he came over and met them the original one scratched him#and he never got over it#wiress realizes that her cats literally hate him after a while and sits them down (the cats and beetee) for her version of an intervention#on one side are the cats and on the other is a grown man. they are both glaring at each other.#then wiress just leaves them there. like straight up just walks out.#beetee is very skeptical he doesn't think him staring at three cats who are glaring at him is going to solve their rivalry#and wiress is just like trust me on this and honestly beetee is just curious at this point. skeptical but curious.#(it works. beetee never questions wiressā problem solving techniques again.)#the cats stop scratching him which in itself is a miracle. now itās only when wiress turns away and they go back to glaring at each other.#idk something abt a guy whoās usually practical having beef with cats is really funny to me#also once they start dating and wiress starts spending the night at beeteeās house i feel the cats are like#āstop stealing momā āwhere did mom goā āwhat did you do to herā and so now the cats hate beetee again.#itās a vicious cycle#atlas (the first victor from three) also has cats but. he has like twenty. thereās so many cats. beetee is surrounded.#(heās a dog person. he has never told wiress this. heās kind of scared to.)#anyway iām done#i promise i can be normal#sometimes#wiress#wiress thg#the hunger games#thg#district 3#beetee latier#dayneās wiress thoughts (TM)#dayneās beetee tag

I just read my new favorite way to explain the need and purpose for and of restorative justice:
In order to better understand this shift, we ask that you engage in a quick reflective exercise that we often facilitate with our students.
First, we ask that you reflect for a moment on a time that you became aware of a crime having been committed in your community. What were your needs as a community member? What was most important to you in that moment?
When we pose this question to students in our courses and trainings, we receive remarkably consistent responses. We hear, āI needed to feel safe againā or āI wanted to feel like I can trust the people in my community.ā Some also express a need to understand why the crime took place or what led to the incident and to form a plan for how the community can prevent this sort of thing from happening in the future.
Next, we ask you to think back on a time that you experienced significant harm. Maybe you were the victim of a crime or maybe it was an instance in your personal life where you were wronged by another person. What were your needs at that time?
Again, responses to this question are generally consistent. We hear answers such as āI needed the person who harmed me to know how it had impacted my life. I needed to know that he wouldnāt do it again to me or anyone elseā or āI wanted to know that she understood what she had done and that she was sorry.ā Some also express a need to have their questions answered. We also hear many practical needs for reparations, such as āI needed someone to fix the damage to my property.ā Rather than a need for the person who caused the harm to be punished, what we hear are needs for information, validation of their experience and pain, assurance that it will not happen again, repairs, and an apology.
Finally, we ask that you think back on a time that you caused harm to another person. Maybe you committed a crime, or maybe you hurt someone, intentionally or not, through your words or actions. What were your needs?
When we ask this question, we again hear remarkably consistent responses. Many people say, āI needed to be able to apologize and do something to try to make it right.ā Others express, āI needed to know that this one incident wouldnāt define me. That I would be seen as a whole person outside this one harmful behaviorā or āI needed to share with the person I hurt about what was going through my mind at that time. I wanted to be understood.ā
What we glean from this exercise is that there are some common human needs experienced in the wake of crimeāneeds for safety, understanding, validation, information, apology, and repair. These are needs that so often go completely unmet by our mainstream punitive justice responses, which are concerned primarily with assigning guilt and doling out punishments.
By bringing the involved parties together in a safe and voluntary dialogue with well-trained facilitators, restorative justice creates an opportunity for those human needs following crime to be met. It offers a moreĀ humanizing view of what it means to pursue justice.
The impact of this approach is evident in its outcomes including reduced recidivism and increased satisfaction on the part of all involved parties, particularly the harmed party or victim. Because of this positive impact, the use of restorative justice is rapidly expanding in criminal justice systems around the United States and the world.
- What is āRestorative Justiceā and How Does it Impact Individuals Involved in Crime? - Lindsey Pointer, Ph.D., Associate Director, National Center on Restorative Justice, Assistant Professor, Center for Justice Reform, Vermont Law School (x)
#restorative justice#i was trying to explain exactly this to my therapist while talking about my reciprocal approach to apologies and problem solving#and i said its a self sooth technique that is good#but i couldn't explain how#and this is how#this is what healthy cooperative growth is#therapy thoughts

Love how every zelda has a special interest and that special interest saves the world.
#Like whether it's piracy or history of light magic or ninjas or technology or art zelda ALWAYS gets super interested in the one thing#That'll save her and the kingdom down the line. Like oot zelda 100% idolised impa and demanded to be taught shiekah techniques#And disguise only for those skills to become vital during the 7 years link was gone.#Tp zelda had the most knowledge of light magic it's history and applications and spirits by FAR and all of those enabled her to save midna#And summon light arrows#If ww zelda was sitting pretty on an island instead of roaming the seas with a loyal crew and several cannons link would have been screwed.#If botw zelda had been allowed to pursue her fascination with shiekah tech or even science as a whole who knows what they might have manage#Ganon might not have been able to take them over at all. She might have learned to channel her power through artifacts or learned to mimic#The energy flow of the shiekah magic which is directly derived from hylia/the tf of wisdom! She wouldn't have been stranded at the mountain#When ganon attacked if she hadn't been forced up there on her birthday. She could have outfitted the champions with better weapons that#Would have been more effective against the blights. She might have unlocked the slate or the shrines. She would have been more confident#And thus less abrasive with link. They would have been able to bond sooner and faster. Link would have been more relaxed and ready.#The shiekah might have been able to rework teleportation instead of 106 years late.#I am salty about rhoam banning her. It never would have worked out well.#Never keep a zelda from her special interest okay!!!!#Like as soon as she and link got to do whatever they wanted the problem got solved within a few months.#Never tell a link to behave or a zelda she can't research#loz#legend of zelda#tears of the kingdom#Totk#loz totk#loz tears of the kingdom#Botw#loz botw#breath of the wild#Zelda#princess zelda#loz zelda#loz link
