Lord, Don't Give Up on Me

Please don’t give up on me!” Psalm 119:8 NLT (my emphasis) Those who follow the instructions of the Lord are blessed with the joy of His presence. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.  Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.  Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. Psalm 51:10-13
A lot of Christians get it wrong. A lot of us tend to think that preaching at someone about their faults is the way to lead them to Jesus. Yes, there is a time when we must condemn sin, but Psalm 51 makes it plain that it is the "joy of salvation" and being made free by the Holy Spirit ("uphold me with thy free spirit") that gives us the ability to spread the Gospel and lead people to Jesus. Joy and freedom- these are the exact opposite of accusations and finger-pointing.
Think about it: did the woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-11) change her ways because the Pharisees wanted to stone her? No. She was probably just terrified. The Bible doesn't actually say she did change her ways, but let's presume that she did and ask: what did bring thatchange? It was Jesus saying He would not condemn her.
Before we go judging others for their faults, let us first find joy and freedom in Christ. Because the acts of sin that we commit- lying, stealing, sleeping around- are not the problem, they're just symptoms. The real problem is that the people doing these things haven't found the joy and freedom that Christ offers to us.

Free from Guilt
Psalm 51:13-15. Then will I teach transgressors Thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto Thee. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of Thy righteousness. O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth Thy praise. Verse 13 is a continuation of verse 12, in which David asks God for a restoration of the joy of his…

The Tower of Babel
‘Now the whole world had one language and a common form of speech. And as people journeyed eastward, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” So they used brick instead of stone, and tar instead of mortar. “Come,” they said, “let us build for ourselves a city with a tower that reaches to the heavens, that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of all the earth.” Then the Lord came down to see the city and the tower that the sons of men were building. And the Lord said, “If they have begun to do this as one people speaking the same language, then nothing they devise will be beyond them. Come, let Us go down and confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.” So the Lord scattered them from there over the face of all the earth, and they stopped building the city. That is why it is called Babel, for there the Lord confused the language of the whole world, and from that place the Lord scattered them over the face of all the earth.’ ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭11‬:‭1‬-‭9‬

The Tower of Babel
1 And the whole earth was of one language and of one speech. 2 And it came to pass as they journeyed from the east that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. 3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick instead of stone and slime instead of mortar. 4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. 5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the sons of the man built. 6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people are one, and they all have one language; and they begin to do this, and now nothing will be restrained from them which they have imagined to do. 7 Now, let us go down and there confound their language that they may not understand one another’s speech. 8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from there upon the face of all the earth, and they left off to build the city. 9 Therefore the name of it was called Babel because there the LORD confounded the language of all the earth, and from there the LORD scattered them abroad upon the face of all the earth. — Genesis 11:1-9 | The Jubilee Bible (JUB) The Jubilee Bible (from the Scriptures of the Reformation), edited by Russell M. Every September, my friend Marc Hong, a professor at Louisville Seminary, hosts Psalmtember. He invites you to join in, too!
Think "Inktober," but in September and with a spiritual focus — and with any art form welcome, from drawing to poetry to photography and beyond. There's also no pressure to create something for every day — do as many or as few as you like.
Here's Marc's description of this artistic event:
Each year, I love to spend a month making art inspired by the Psalms. There are 30 days in September, meaning that I can evenly divide up the 150 Psalms into 5 sets of 30. So, if I do this for 5 years, I will have made art with all of the Psalms. Join me! The prompt list is in the image [as well as below the readmore]. But other words may stand out to you! Or you may try to make art that represents the wholeness of the Psalm. I encourage you to read the text of the whole Psalm each day, consider what emotions it stirs up in you, choose a medium that speaks to you, and make some art! Folks have painted, used ink, drawn with colored pencils, taken photographs, written haikus, and much more. Choose what stirs delight in you!
Tag your post with #psalmtember2023 so we can celebrate the Psalms through art together!
Marc and many others post on Facebook, but I'll be paying attention to the tag here on tumblr. If you create anything you'd like me to share on Facebook on your behalf, DM me.
