A LETTER FROM YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER! The following words come from the heart of God. After all God loves you, and He is the Father you have been looking for all your life. This is His Love Letter to you! My Dear Child, You may not know me, but I know everything about you. (Ps 139:1) I know when you sit down and when you rise up. PRAYING FOR YOUR CHILDREN

That they will know Christ as Savior early in life.

The Lord's Promises Are Pure

The Lord's promises are pure, like silver refined in a furnace, purified seven times over. Psalm 12:6 The opening verses of Psalm 12 point to a godly society changing to godlessness. David clearly observed people moving away from the Lord. Help, O Lord, for the godly are fast disappearing! The faithful have vanished from the earth! Psalm 12:1 We can compare the experiences David wrote about with the growth of godlessness in our world today. Pardon the expression, but we live in a dog-eat-dog world. Neighbors lie to each other, speaking with flattering lips and deceitful hearts. Psalm 12:2

The Deceit of Flattering Lips

The phrase "flattering lips" means that someone offers lavish, insincere, and manipulative praise. The flattering person seeks some kind of benefit for themself. Flattery effectively appeals to our vanity. It also lays traps to snare us in our most vulnerable areas. Then, we believe these lies to feel loved and accepted, admired, and even envied. In reality, though, if we buy into that type of lie, we must act in ways that support a false self-image. Plus, we can come to a place where we don't need God. David may have written this Psalm during Saul's reign as king. Saul used flattery on David, trying to lure him in. David wanted to believe Saul's flattery but deep down felt its deception. Therefore, in the next verse, he asked the Lord to stop the flattering lips and silence the boastful tongues. He went to the Lord with his request because he knew it wouldn't stop on its own. They say, "We will lie to our hearts' content. Our lips are our own—who can stop us?" Psalm 12:4 We would expect an attitude like that from the world influenced by its sinful nature. I'm sad to say that I have seen that same attitude in the church.

The Lord's Reply with Promises

Thankfully, David stopped writing about the negative things going on around him. The rest of this Psalm focuses on the Lord's response and His promises. The Lord replies, "I have seen violence done to the helpless, and I have heard the groans of the poor. Now I will rise up to rescue them, as they have longed for me to do." Psalm 12:5 The Lord's reply begins with promises to two classes of people: the helpless and the poor. David often felt helpless; therefore he included the helpless in many of the Psalms. Helpless means not having the strength or power to do anything useful or to control or protect. This means helplessness could affect any area of our lives. Jesus identified the helpless like this. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Matthew 9:36 Paul also referred to the unsaved as helpless when he said the following. When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Romans 5:6 Secondly, the Lord's promises also dealt with the groans of the poor. The Bible mentions two types of poor. Those physically poor and spiritually poor. Being physically poor means lacking "sufficient money" to live at a standard considered comfortable or normal in a society. Even though God cares for the poor, Jesus said we will always have poor people. Maybe because of a choice or inherited choices of past generations. The church has a mandate to help its poor. They (apostles) encouraged us to keep preaching to the Gentiles, while they continued their work with the Jews. Their only suggestion was that we keep on helping the poor, which I have always been eager to do. Galatians 2:9-10

The Lord's Promises in the Psalms

We've come full circle to the verse we started with that talks about the Lord's promises. The writers of the Psalms mentioned the Lord's promises several times, including the following. - All the Lord's promises prove true. Psalm 18:30 - God is faithful to His promises. Psalm 71:22 - His faithful promises are your armor and protection. Psalm 91:4 - Your promises have been thoroughly tested; that is why I love them so much. Psalm 119:140 - The Lord's promises are backed by all the honor of your name. Psalm 138:2 - The Lord always keeps his promises. Psalm 145:13 In this Psalm, however, David reported that the Lord's promises are pure. As I found that description interesting, he continued by telling us how pure they are. He said pure as refined silver, not once, but seven times. Refining silver once leaves it fairly pure. But repeating the refining process seven times would make it wholly pure. I don't believe the Psalmist just picked the number seven out of the air. The number seven in scripture represents "perfection," "finished," or "complete," making God's promises flawless. According to the last two verses of this Psalm, the Lord's promises go beyond helping the poor and helpless. Even while the wicked strut around, God will protect all of the oppressed. Therefore, Lord, we know you will protect the oppressed, preserving them forever from this lying generation, even though the wicked strut about, and evil is praised throughout the land. Psalm 12:7-8 Thank you, Lord, for all of your promises. We can rely on you when we feel helpless and during our poorest moments. Like the Psalmist said, you always keep your promises. Living His Word

Even when I am old and gray,    do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation,    your mighty acts to all who are to come. — Psalm 71:18

Psalm 71 was written in King David's old age, as appears from several of the verses in it, including our verse for today. It was penned during a time of trouble in his later years. Perhaps it was at the time of Absalom's rebellion. It expresses some of the concerns typical of those who are advancing in years: that his weakness will lead to shame and a loss of honor; that he will become vulnerable to opposition; that he will be overlooked, passed by, and not heard.

Above all, David's Psalm expresses the concern that he might be forsaken, by man and even by God Himself. He cried out to God: "Do not cast me away when I am old; do not forsake me when my strength is gone" (Psalm 71:9). David had relied upon the Lord from his youth, and now in his old age he needed Him more than ever. All along the ups and downs of his journey through life he had not forsaken the Lord, and now he asks the Lord not to forsake him.

He had a reason why God should not forsake him. God should not forsake him because he had not yet finished declaring God's power and mighty acts to the next generation. Like many of his age, he did not want to pass on until he had fully accomplished his mission and calling in life. He was not simply requesting deliverance from his troubles and an extension of his life for his own sake, but so that he could ensure the next generation would realize their need for God.

David was a man of God. And like all men and women of God, he had the desire to "still bear fruit in old age" and to "stay fresh and green" (Psalm 92:14), until he had delivered himself of everything he believed the next generation needed from him in order to successfully initiate and continue their walk with God.

Perhaps the years are catching up to you and you can see the end looming up. Perhaps, like David, you believe there is still something you need to leave behind. Today, ask God to help you finish everything He has placed on your heart ? and to give you peace about it.

The writer of this Psalm desperately wanted God to show His strength through him, an old man. He wanted everyone to know God's power. As we grow old, we can still show God's strength. As we become weaker, we can proclaim how strong He is. Do not lose heart as you grow old. The retired missionary now goes door to door to preach even though he's walking slowly. The woman who started doing jail ministry long ago is often decades later faithfully visiting the jail. Whatever God is calling you to, God is greater than your age.

Lord, as I grow old, let me still serve You faithfully. When I'm weak, help me to show others Your strength. Through wrinkles, let others see the joy on my face that comes only from You. Even if I'm moving slowly, let me still move for You. I will gladly do Your will until my last breath. If I'm on this earth, You have me here for a reason. I will continue to live for You. In Jesus' name. Amen. ★

A love letter from God to you

“For in the time of trouble - When I am surrounded by dangers, or when affliction comes upon me.

He shall hide me - The word used here means to hide; to secrete; and then, to defend or protect. It would properly be applied to one who had fled from oppression, or from any impending evil, and who should be "secreted" in a house or cavern, and thus rendered safe from pursuers, or from the threatening evil.

In his pavilion - The word "pavilion" means "tent" or "tabernacle." The Hebrew word - סכה sukâh - means properly a booth, hut, or cot formed of green branches interwoven: Jonah 4:5; Job 27:18; see the notes at Isaiah 4:6. Then it is applied to tents made of skins: Leviticus 23:43; 2 Samuel 11:11. It thus is used to denote the tabernacle, considered as the dwelling-place of God on earth, and the meaning here is, that God would hide him as it were in His own dwelling; He would admit him near to Himself; He would take care that he should be protected as if he were one of His own family; as a man protects those whom he admits to his own abode.

In the secret of his tabernacle - In the most retired and private part of His dwelling. He would not merely admit him to His premises; not only to the vestibule of His house; not only to the open court, or to the parts of His house frequented by the rest of His family; but he would admit him to the private apartments - the place to which He Himself withdrew to be alone, and where no stranger, and not even one of the family, would venture to intrude. Nothing could more certainly denote friendship; nothing could more certainly make protection sure, than thus to be taken into the private apartment where the master of a family was accustomed himself to withdraw, that he might be alone; and nothing, therefore, can more beautifully describe the protection which God will give to His friends than the idea of thus admitting them to the secret apartments of His own dwelling-place.

He shall set me up upon a rock - A place where I shall be secure; a place inaccessible to my enemies. Compare Psalm 18:1-2; Psalm 19:14 (margin); Psalm 61:2; Psalm 71:3. The meaning is, that he would be safe from all his enemies.”
