DIY AGE OF SAIL INSPIRED FOULIES

an unexpected update

I brought my foulies home since i figured the tung oil was probably past the point of spontaneous combustion. It's been exactly a week since i first waxed them, and while at the beginning of the week they were very distinctly oily and sticky to the touch, this morning they were mostly just waxy. If you saw my last update there was plenty of wax that hadn't fully soaked into the fabric, and today i took a heat gun and dry brush to all the fabric to see if i couldn't melt it in. It worked well, if only to make the waxy shell more evenly distributed. Anyway, i hung everything up in the sunroom with the window open to keep the space ventilated, forgetting that my cabin was supposed to be power washed later in the evening to prep for a fresh paint job this weekend.

As you would expect with a power washer and an open window, everything in the sunroom got soaked, including my fresh set of bibs. And well.... they're waterproof! Though definitely not cured (as i expected- full cure time for pure tung oil can be up to a month) I think it was probably mostly the pine tar leeching out because of the color and smell of the water that had drenched my paper towel roll and pooled in the bucket (both pictured below). I'm assuming that this means they they aren't FULLY waterproof...yet. but my hopes are high!!

This was an overly ambitious project for my skill level at the time, but I wanted to make a 3D cutting board for my former boss as a wedding gift. I cut the lozenges using a miter saw, which was a mistake. Even though I had constructed a jig, the sizes ended up being wildly inconsistent. Unfortunately I hadn't figured this out by the time I had started gluing them up, thus began the difficult and time-consuming task of paring each face individually to get a good fit. Of course, what I should have done was planed and ripped the strips to equal sizes and then cut the bevel on a table saw (which I didn't have at the time). The other complication was the colors bleeding from the solvents in the finish. I sanded most of it back, then used acetone prior to the finish which worked well, but the end grain of wood is very absorbent so some of the color was deeply embedded at that point. What I thought would be a weekend project ended up taking a few months. Even though the fitting was time intensive the finishing ended up being the primary reason for the timeframe. I soaked the board in pure tung oil since it's foodsafe. But with endgrain the oil can ultimately soak from end to end. When the oil polymerizes, this gives the fibers additional strength throughout, but oxygen is required for the process and oxygen diffuses very slowly through the top layers that have already polymerized. As such, this board took about 6 weeks to cure enough to ship. Sadly, the board was lost in the mail and never received by the intended recipient. Hopefully it's being used in the postal employee breakroom or something.

I intuit that this is 75% locked in already as ill-fated destiny up to 85% potentiality.

With that stated, I feel more a prophet of doom than an Inspirational spiritual poet as my usual devotion. The Dangers Of DIY Skincare:

1. Witch hazel: An anti-inflammatory commonly used as the main ingredient in DIY astringents. What most people don't know is that witch hazel is usually distilled by alcohol and or immersed in it to preserve it and can literally tear apart the skin's hydration barrier. Which leads dry and flaky skin.The natural fragrance in witch hazel is eugenol, a potent irritant. So if you have sensitive skin watch out.

2. Lemons: No more lemons! This citrus fruit is the star of DIY beauty projects, most dermatologists dread. Lemons have a pH of about 2 and when used on skin, ruins it’s natural pH balance of 4 - 5. Dermatologist don’t recommend using pure lemon juice on your face or used as an ingredient in diy projects, because it has to be mixed with the correct acids, chemicals, and other ingredients for the skin to truly benefit from it.
