Icons Essay
Icons are figures that their audience looks up to in today’s generation to learn moral lessons and good ethics from. Serena Williams portrays that she is an icon by using her own life journey as an example to give her crowd the message that putting in the effort and having patience will lead you to your final goal, this message has impacted the many lives of her young audience. Lebron James is displayed as an icon, by giving kids new lives so they can have access to education, by doing this Lebron James has opened doors for the future for many of the young, so they can have a good outcome. Venus Williams takes the place of an icon, by bringing attention to equality for young female athletes and drawing a focus for equal pay.  Yes, icons exist today as they have a global audience that sees them as a role model that makes an impact in their lives and their icons broaden their perspective of the world in many different categories that are relevant today. This can be seen by examining the journeys and deeds of Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Lebron James by the impact they have made in society.
Serena Williams can be seen as an icon when she used her pregnancy journey to inspire her fans and young mothers. Serena Williams pregnancy journey highlights how she was determined to get back on the tennis court, in moments she thought she was vulnerable. Serena Williams stated, “ It was beautiful but then everything went bad''.( 1 ) Serena said this a couple of hours after she gave birth, the reason she said this is because of her history with blood clots. Serena went through many struggles after her pregnancy which made her think that she was going to lose her life. During this time she had her mom and her fiance holding her together when she was falling apart. A few weeks after her surgery she came back on the media and shared her thoughts on how she was feeling, and she mainly encouraged her fans to not give up on anything. Serena also gave her fans the message that if she did not have hope in herself she would not have come back to the tennis court, in the same way, she has kept her pregnancy story as an inspiration to many of the fans. Serena Williams is also well known to promote body image and self-acceptance. In one of her films, Serena said “ I get asked about my body all the time. From an early age, I think I was always body-conscious, in terms of girls aren't supposed to be fit. But I never thought people would talk about my arms or curves.” ( 2 ) Serena Williams stated this in one of her interviews and later she talked about the importance of body image and self-acceptance and how no one should be ashamed about their body. She even talked about how she had some of her fans being self-conscious about themselves but she said that’s how she felt during her pregnancy and how she wanted her body back to the way it was. In her interviews, she talked about how viewing yourself and body image is a big issue with many girls as they like to compare themselves with people they see on social media or celebrities, this, in turn, leads to lowering their self-esteem. Serena Williams used her pregnancy story to let many around the world, that the state you are in is temporary and soon you will see yourself in a position you thought you’d never be in.
Lebron James is shown as an icon due to him building a school for the students that cannot afford to go to one. When Lebron James grew up a bicycle was very important to him for transportation  “A Bicycle, for me, was the only way to get around the city. If I wanted to meet some of my friends, travel across the city, go to school, play basketball-anything-the bicycle was the way I got around”. ( 3 )This quotation shows how Lebron got around with only a bicycle in his childhood. So the school he created, he also had made a bunch of benefits for the students. One of the benefits is he said each student will receive a bicycle for their transportation. He knew that some students are not able to travel to school by car or bus etc because for many reasons such as money, so he provided a free and healthy way for the student’s outcome of transportation. He showed an impact from his childhood on his students for a good outcome. Lebron James had big dreams growing up and one of his dreams had come true which is building a school. “The jitters before the first day of school are real right now!!! Tomorrow is going to be one of the greatest moments(if not the greatest)of my life when we open the I Promise school. This skinny kid from Akron who missed 83 days of school in the fourth grade had big dreams.”  Lebron was very excited that his school’s grand opening was just tomorrow and he couldn’t believe his dream finally came true. He had big dreams as a kid and one of them was to build a school for the kids that aren’t able to go for many reasons. In part of the quote, it states that “A skinny kid from Akron who missed 83 days of school had big dreams” From this it basically says that even though as a kid Lebron missed school he still had a dream which was to create a school. This can tell young kids to elderly people that if you are able to make your dream come true then do it.
Venus Williams is an icon because she fought to get equal rights and equal pay for female athletes and also she motivates others to fight for equal gender rights too. Venus Williams believes and advocates for female athletes earning the same pay as male athletes.“ I think in the Grand Slam events, it should be equal pay, and the ladies should do something about it instead of just accepting it for years to come''. ( 5 )This quote shows how Williams is motivating herself and other women in all types of careers to mobilize to get what they actually deserve from their work instead of accepting what they get which is often less than males. Venus tells the world that females deserve equal pay and gender should not dictate what a person earns, but instead that talent and merit should be rewarded. Venus’ statement could also be related to all women in society who don't get something they really should on the basis of sex. It motivates women to fight for their right to equal pay and freedom from discrimination. The ESPN article explores how Venus Williams has strongly informed her justification for young female athletes who truly deserve equal pay. Venus wanted to see this issue resolved in her lifetime. . “… get to this stage, and you’re told you’re not the same as a boy …”( 2 ) In this quote, Williams shared her own experience of being told that females are good but not as good as male athletes.  It can be associated with many women who dream, work as hard as they can and sacrifice their goals, but in the end, they find no value in hard work and are treated differently from men. Roger Federer won the men's championship with $ 1.13 million in prize money. But his female opponent Williams only won $ 1.08 million, but they both played equally well, but the male athlete had to pay more than the female athlete, which is completely unfair. Williams did not accept the money, but she did speak, and one day before the Wimbledon final, Williams addressed a meeting, urging the Wimbledon and French Open to pay male and female players equally, and she was the first female athlete to receive equal pay. This may inspire many of us to fight until we get what we deserve.
Yes, icons exist today as they have a global audience that sees them as a role model that makes an impact in their lives also their icons broaden their perspective of the world in many different categories that are relevant today. Serena Williams has portrayed that she is an icon by using her own life journey to give inspiration to her fans and display the importance of body image and self-acceptance. Lebron James had shown he is an icon by opening doors to give kids a good future, he did this by building a school and this allowed the kids to have access to education. Venus Willams is recognized as an icon by fighting to give equal rights and pay for the female athletes and she has motivated others to fight for equal gender rights. These are the reasons why these three athletes are shown as icons around the world.

“I lost track.“
Hey Journal.
My name is Matt Shaw and I’m 27 years old. I created you because I was lost and needed something to steady my life. Something to give me an identity.
You know, it’s funny, because I was going to start this post without the quotation marks. I really felt like I lost track of something. But then I read my music review of “Beauty Behind the Madness” by The Weeknd and realized... I never really had a clear head in the first place. But that’s something we can work on. The forces of the world have been pushing and pulling at me for long enough now. Here we sit in this depressive episode, this hesitation to take that next step and make things right. Here is somewhere we can start.
I want to give you a brief synopsis of my life. I know this is a lot of sentimental BS to lay on you, and I’m almost sorry I created you. Almost. But I won’t be dissuaded. I need you. I need to forge an identity. So bear with me.
Oh and by the way, your existence is totally dependent on mine. You are like... my therapeutic little slave.
We were born on July 2, 1994. Sometime before that, our birth-mother, whose name was Karen, met your mother Mary at the hospital she was working at as a receptionist. She conceived you with Alberto, who she had met a Christian college and since broken up with over disagreements about you. Our mother Mary was widowed once from her first husband Joseph, who died of lung cancer while working at an asbestos factory (fuck big business). She then remarried to Michael, the archangel of victory, who was older but from the same Philly suburb that she grew up in. They had mutual friends, who later had kids and became your vacation buddies. Michael had also been married once and had since divorced. Anyway, Mary was unable to have children due to a prior condition and so she adopted the Antichrist the day he came into the world. They always say, “You were home just in time for the fourth of July!” Growing up, it became apparent we had the behavioral issues pretty fast. Karen had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, something we would also later be diagnosed with. We were hyperactive, always getting into time-outs in school. We frolicked under a yellow cartoon summer sun. The Philadelphia suburbs were the Garden of Fucking Eden. First it was Catholic school. We attested that we didn’t believe in God by the 2nd grade. Yes, we had the behavioral issues. But a sprig of genius always sort of shone through that kooky little head of yours, finding joy in language and art but not math, definitely not math.
By fifth grade we had switched to the public school system. We always had a lot of friends, and this was when we started to flirt with girls. But at the same time the mental health was a problem, and sometimes we would play too rough. We had already lost two friends by this time, Kelsey to a brain tumor and Courtney to juvenile arthritis medication.
We entered middle school. We felt out of place. There was this deep itch of depression in that brain we could never ever scratch. We cut ties with the elementary school girl and formed a new crush. When she didn’t like us back, we cut ourselves. We carved the girl’s name into our leg. Right now her friends would tease you. There was a letter you dropped in her locker begging for mercy. And then the next year the two of you were... dating. It was a big surprise but she was in a lot of our classes. She used to let her flowery-smelling hair fall onto our desk in math class.
We’ve mentioned the behavioral issues but we haven’t mentioned how zany and fun we were. Yes, you were a wild child, tearing up the scene with quirky remarks and the occasional witticism. We were really into the boy scout thing. We were taught a moral code and fell in love with the outdoors. We learned about teamwork and leadership. But mostly, we just had bucketloads of fun.
We attended our first rock concert in Philly the year before we started high school-- we took a bunch of friends and the girl with the flowery hair. It was fucking awesome. Of course, it was a Fall Out Boy show. The relationship with the girl lasted eight months but our jealousy and paranoia broke it-- a trend that would take over a decade to get under control.
We had great friends in middle school. We started playing guitar around thirteen. We went on church retreats. We wrote songs. We had big bright eyes the color of chocolate and honey. We were hyper as fuck. We had a bad episode at home and the police had to be called-- you wouldn’t get off Mom and Dad’s bed during an argument and you pushed Mom, you hit Dad, punched a glass picture frame and flipped the TV. We were hospitalized at fourteen on an adolescent psych ward.
There was a canoe trip in Maine, it was awesome.
We didn’t get up for school, we didn’t do homework, but teachers loved us. We were so engaged in class. We loved the English language. We were in the literary magazine called the Pen & Ink, you wrote that poem/song:
“Raindrops fall on a crystal window, and I stare, pensive.
Thinking, ‘raindrops have not a care for my despair, so why even bother?’”
We always were a bit... melodramatic. We went to therapy, we wore skinny jeans, we got arrested for trespassing on accident and winded up on juvenile probation. This experience crushed our faith in the system.
When we started high school, we used to get pulled out of class to pee-test a lot. We slept in for the bus and then got sent to juvenile detention for missing school. This fucked up high school for us, and our teachers didn’t like it either. It was a short stay but the emotional damage was done.
High school could be great at times-- we were in the literary magazine there, too. We missed a lot of school. We fell more in love with pop-punk music. We had a lot of friends but also lots of fallings-out. We had a couple really cool girlfriends, the one in music class was probably the best stretch of time in our entire life. We had great relationships with our teachers. We took Latin, which really bolstered out understanding of language and got us interested in etymology. We were able to take a college-level music theory course, and the instructor took your love of music and breathed even more life into it, showing us so many interesting things about music. We started longing for more interesting time signatures, we learned what tonality and modes are, and we learned about chord progressions-- just to name a few. All potential tools for self-expression. It was so thrilling to learn.
There was a trip to Yellowstone & the Tetons with Boy Scouts after ninth grade. The sights you saw there were truly stunning. The next trip was to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, which was a great experience.
We continued our bad habits in relationships, getting jealous and paranoid all over the place. We spit in a girl’s face in the cafeteria in 11th grade. We kept writing. We tried it with the music but we were always just a bit too awkward. We were in chorus the last year. Some of the songs we sang just ring in our head for the rest of our life, like “Erev Shel Shoshanim,” “Bridge O’er Troubled Water” arranged by Kirby Shaw, and “The Seal Lullaby” by Eric Whitacre.
We stopped being a total prude in high school. We smoked weed for the first time. We snuck liquor into a school dance. We lost our virginity to a friend’s girlfriend one crazy night when that girl and the girl we were *supposed* to be talking to invited us and our two friends over. Our friends stayed home but we rolled the dice and went over. The girls were both drunk and our crush passed out, leaving us with the friend’s girlfriend. We almost got her pregnant but, it was worth it. She was really hot. Plus, she was in the grade above us.
Sorry, journal, not all these events are in order, and I know this is all really banal stuff. I just want to get this off my chest. Part of me thinks I’m doing this just to make sure I remember everything. Because college...
College is when we made some decisions that definitely fucked up the rest of time for us. We had this friend who had an older brother at the four-year we attended, Bloomsburg University. Our high school grades were so bad that we had to agree to attend the summer session there, which was cool. We met a lifetime friend there, and also we started liking beer. We’d hang out at keggers and just mingle with everyone. We passed summer session with flying colors.
Fall came, and we zeroed in on a major, actually two-- Psychology and Creative Writing. Then we met your friend’s older brother and the lovely gaggle of Deadhead hippies we fell in with. They were all amazing kids with great hearts. They’re all successful now, and they were also all smart kids. We clashed with them at first. We wanted everyone to like us and... it just reeked. We were just off, but they let you hang. They cozied up to you eventually.
We did acid and shrooms and smoked lots of weed. We got hammered at parties. It was fun. We banged our head on a concrete staircase one night while tripping-- we decided to go mud-sliding during a thunderstorm. We became paranoid that we had damaged our pre-frontal cortex. Our mental health may have started to deteriorate. We panicked and dropped out of school.
You don’t get to go on to the next chapter without mentioning the girl you met during your time here. The one whose initials were DMT. No, journal, that doesn’t mean she was one of the deadhead hippies, although that would be funny (some of your friends had done the drug, which they fondly referred to as dead bodies, said in a choked-out voice). The memory of this girl swims through your head for the rest of eternity.
She was blonde and skinny, with long, thin fingers that gripped her guitars with strength. Man, she could make a guitar sound like a running river...
^^That’s how she used to speak. She had the most beautiful blue eyes you’d ever seen. She had these quirks and signatures, always saying like ya do! and charmed, I’m sure. And also you’re too kind, I’m sure. She’d take you kayaking. She took you to her special lookout spot near Danville where she hails from. She used to visit you at the places where you’d stay and you’d go to her house, where she’d pour wine down your throat and fuck you, don’t forget: you had learned to drive about a year before, grandpop handed you his old Ford Taurus Wagon. you used it to deliver pizza for Frank’s and then hoagies for Steph’s Subs. She used to have you deliver her special 6 ft-long subs, which the wagon was perfect for, although in hilly Bloomsburg the long car would scrape the road.
you used to live above an old bookstore called the Philip’s Emporium. You and the landlady and your roommate had plans to turn it into a music venue, which it already was but they made the metalheads stop partying there because it would smell like beer the next day and they had a daycare there.
you haven’t mentioned your family much yet at all, you’ll have to go back and awkwardly go over that
you don’t give a fuck right now, this is a total mess and THIS IS HAPPENING. we need to get this down. we are DYING. D Y I N G !
oh, and a piece of the engine block broke off one night driving home from Disa’s. After that you borrowed Mom’s CRV. You know, you’re supposed to be a writer. You’re supposed to tell this in a way that makes people want to read it. Now you’ve doomed this to obscurity, no one cares about this type of shit. So, good job.
She went around with a gaggle of guys you weren’t allowed to know. This time, our suspicions were correct, but the way we dealt with them was not. We did not behave like a man, we threw tantrums. We rented the top level of a house in her town, right near the Susquehanna. But it was short lived, because we sat the girl down and asked her if she had lied to us and she very hesitantly admitted that she had. So we threw a temper tantrum.
She had gone to a wedding with her ex Bill. You were texting her the whole time. This is why you love Kill Bill. The whole thing is this stupid metaphor.
After she admitted this you tried to keep her around for about three days but ended up calling her a slut. She promptly punched you, lightly, on the side. You wouldn’t stand for this abuse and you then “kicked her out.” So you went to work feeling anxious and drove off on some kind of joy ride, forgetting you had your boss’ collateral money. When you returned, you were fired and you smashed your iPhone on the ground and knocked over some rolls.
That night you stopped by her house. She had cut her hair short. She was there with all her friends, not answering the door. You were asking to use her phone. When no one answered you grew furious, and that’s when you saw her haircut, and it made you furious.
So you gathered up all your things and piled them into your Nissan Altima, which your parents had bought for you from some old woman. You took pictures of you and Disa shattered them and placed them in the center of the room with old flowers and spilled fake Halloween blood on them, placing the fake blood vial on top so Bob would know it wasn’t real. Bob was the welder you were renting the house from.
You took the fishtank she was keeping at your house and put it in your car.
The next day you drove over there and you smashed that fishtank on her front porch, hoping she would get the reference to Allie Brosh’s Hyperbole and a Half, which she had shown you. She had also shown you lots of music that really fit the whole ordeal, like Brand New and The Front Bottoms. Oh, that memory of one of your first dates, the two of you playing “Flashlight” together....
Anyway, you smashed the fishtank. Her father chased you down, trying to wrestle his way into your driver’s side door as you reversed out of the driveway. Her sister came out and started stalking your car like a panther or something.
We drove all the way to Miami, longboarded around a bit, and laid on the beach. We accidentally laid on top of our laptop, breaking it. So we just drove home, with hardly any money. We called mom and dad on the way down trying to reassure them but they were worried sick.
When we got home, we were 20 and depressed as fuck. We cut ourselves a lot. We went to the mental hospital. Oh yeah, once at 17 we tried to kill ourselves with Ritalin over some dumb situation with a girl. But this was much worse. We rammed Dad’s Sebring with the Altima in the driveway. I forget why.
Then Dad would let us drive the Sebring after that. We went to the mental hospital again. We lost a million jobs. We met another girlfriend and fucked her on top of your pile of stuff from Bloomsburg in the Altima. We dealt with these things by smoking weed and drinking. We went to community college.
Journal, I forget. I know we went back to Bloomsburg, it’s all just a blur. We damaged the train station. We went to jail for 5 months. It was traumatizing and terrible. I could tell you so much about that but my fingers are getting tired. I don’t know if I’ll even finish this. If there’s one thing I learned from typing all this, sweet journal, it’s that my life really doesn’t matter all that much. I can’t even fucking remember it right.
We were in this stupid probation program for 2 years after that. I guess it really helped. We were berated and berated. We got accused of things we didn’t do. We gave a false hot drug test for opiates. We met some great friends. We got through it. We met a girl who was from here but living in Oregon. She got you fired from your job after you broke up with her and made up lots of lies about you in a letter to your place of work. But you had a good experience helping her and her dad fix houses, and also went backpacking with her.
Journal, I can’t do this. I can’t.
So we went on vacation to Texas and we stayed there. The girl there gave us some problems, or maybe I’m just too sensitive. Mom and Dad heard her freaking out on you one night. They helped you move to San Antonio. But you wasted your time. I am using such strange pronouns
Oh yeah, you started experimenting with different things. Really you started in your bedroom back in Pennsylvania, wearing kitty ears and some girl clothes. But in Galveston Texas, with this girl, you started wearing her clothes with cat ears and you developed your Kitty persona. It’s Lolita style. It’s partially you just having fun but also making a statement about how fucked up the world gets and protecting little girls from predators. But anyway yeah that girl was freaking out on you over not wanting to date her and Mom and Dad heard it, and then offered to help you out with an apartment somewhere.
You wasted a year and a half in San Antonio. You wasted lots of your parents’ hard-earned money. Hardly anything came of your time there. And now, we have way less brain cells, no money to speak of, and we are 27 and living back with mom and dad in the same damn room. And nothing is going right, journal, nothing. I wish I would have taken the time to write a better synopsis of my life so far. Maybe I’ll make another stab at it later. But really, I just wanted to start talking to you and start keeping track of my days. Because I am only just now beginning to understand just how limited they really are.
I’m so sorry journal. I’m so fucking sorry. Love, Matt Shaw

James Potter imagine :Fake:
Name of imagine: Fake. Summary: Y/N is one of Remus' close friends, he is also her one of her only friends. James, Sirius and Peter consider themselves her friends but the feeling isn't mutual. Y/N doesn't trust anyone incept Remus. James is obviously obsessed with Lily Evans so he has a plan which involves Y/N, but will she agree? Side note: Lily Evans is bitchy and mean in this once again, because I live for bitchy and mean Evans. (But I also love her original character) Words: 5547 Warnings: Swearing, making out, using the words 'blush/blushing' too much. that's it I think?? Female reader but please change any gender assigned words. Reader is a Gryffindor sorry, but I promise I am planning on doing some imagines with a reader not in Gryffindor! I know it's annoying, I'm a Slytherin myself but it's hard. 💚🖤💚 ----- "You want to sit with us at lunch?" Remus asked me as I packed away my Muggle Studies work. I blushed and shook my head. "I-It's fine Remmy, I-I don't want to be a bother. A-and your friends are really outgoing" I mumbled, I noticed him smile sweetly at me. "I'll tell them to shut up, come on please. I don't like seeing you sit by yourself" I blushed again and put my bag over my shoulder, I gave him a small nod. "Come on then" He said throwing an arm around my shoulder. As we walked down the corridor people stared at us then started to whisper to each other, mostly girls who think Remus is attractive. Which I'm not going to deny. Soon enough we were in the Hall and walking over to the Gryffindor table, my cheeks turned bright red as I saw James Potter mess with his hair and jotted something down on a piece of parchment. "Hey guys" Remus said causing all three boys to look up. Sirius went a cheeky smile my way as I sent them a small wave. "Hey Y/N, are you sitting with us today?" I giggled with a small nod, James looked at me with a smirk and moved over slightly. "Sit here" He said, I hid behind my hair after another nod. I took a book out of my bag then started to read at as Remus sat next to me. "Whatcha reading?" A voice said from the other side of my causing me to roll my eyes, all I wanted to do was read my book. "Standard Book of Spells, Grade 5" I mumbled and grabbed an apple from in front of me. "But we're in fourth year" I turned to James with a sarcastic gasp. "What really? You're telling me that I've been reading the wrong book for the whole year?!" He looked at me in shock, normally I was shy and and didn't answer a lot of questions but I've been hanging around with these boys more over the past few months and becoming more confident even though I'm not particularly friends with them. Only Remus. "She speaks!" Sirius yelled slightly causing me to blush and go back to my book. "Pads, fuck off" James mumbled causing me to look at his with a small smile, he sent a smirk my way and I let out a quite giggle. "Oo James, Evans looking to the right-no Your right!" Sirius whisper yelled causing me to look to our left and saw she was looking and glaring at me slightly? "Y/L/N, don't look you'll-!" Sirius mumbled but stopped his sentence as I glared at him. "Don't tell her what to do Sirius, she'll kill you" Remus said and took a sip from my coffee. "Get your own Lupin!" I yelled snatching it off him, causing him to roll his eyes. "Mate, Pads! She's coming over act natural- Heyyyyy Lily-Flower!" He said doing a ridiculous hand gesture causing me to snort behind my hand. "Potter, Black, Peter and Remus. Oh Y/N didn't see you there before. Are you lost or something?" She asked with a fake sweet smile, I rolled my eyes and turned away from her. "Evans, if you didn't know I was sitting here. Why are you over here? Are you lost?" I heard the boys laugh slightly causing me to smirk. I turned back to Evans who was glaring at me still. "I-I was just coming over to ask Remus a-about our muggle studies homework" She tried to say, I raised an eyebrow at her. I can't always talk back to Evans but today I was in a certain mood. "Really? I'm actually in your muggle studies class and we haven't had any homework this week." I said with a fake confused look. She let out a groan of annoyance and stomped away out of the Great Hall. I turned back around once again and saw the whole Gryffindor table staring at me. My cheeks turned red as I felt myself turn back to my shy self. "Y/N, that was amazing. I hate seeing her talk to you like that" Sirius said with a big smile, I shrugged bit was a little confused. Why does he care? Once classes has ended I walked back to the common room feeling like I want to drop dead as I felt so tired. Once I reached the 'Fat Lady' I mumbled the password and dragged myself in, wanting to go straight to bed. "Y/N!" A deep voice shouted, and I let out a small groan and moved my body to face the voice. "Yes James?" I asked, he made a hand gesture to signal to come over to him. I sighed for like the millionth time today but walked over and to sit next to him on the 'love seat' next to the fire. He made room for me to sit down, and I practically collapsed. "Rough day?" He chuckled, I nodded but didn't say anything. "Can I ask you to do something for me?" He asked again, I twisted my body slightly so I can see his face. My breath caught in my throat as I noticed how close we are, I've also never noticed how gorgeous he was. Yes I know he's attractive, everyone does even himself. My heartbeat rang in my ears as I stared into his eyes. "Go on" I said snapping out of my small trance. He threw an arm around the back of the seat with a smirk. "Will you be my girlfriend?" He asked causing me to choke on the air in my lungs. "What?!" I whisper shouted as I felt the blood rush to my cheeks. "Not my real girlfriend, like my fake girlfriend to make Lily jealous. I saw the way she looked at you today. It's perfect!" My heart dropped slightly at the thought, I've thought of James in that way but nothing ever serious. Just a school girl crush, but isn't nice to think someone is asking to practically use you then ditch you when he wins the girl. "You think I'd do that for you?" I asked quietly, I didn't want to be used. "Please!" He asked, I shook my head. "James, I don't want to be used. I've never even have a boyfriend, and I don't know you that well-" I tried to say getting upset but he cut me off. "Hey, hey, hey. We've known each other for nearly four years, and I'm not going to use you. I'll just hold your hand in front of her maybe kiss you on the head and call you my girlfriend in front of her. We'll just stay the same and maybe get to know each other more, be like you and Remmy" He finished his little speech with another smirk. I bit my lip thinking about it, I mean Lily has been mean to me since first year. I could get her back a little. "Please!" He said again, making puppy dog eyes. I giggled and lightly pushed his face away. "Alight, alright. I'm doing this because your one of the only people I can tolerate in this school" He laughed and wrapped his arm around my shoulder. "Imma treat you like a princess" I laughed but blushed and looked away from him so he couldn't see. "Are you going to tell the boys that it's fake?" I asked, he shook his head. "No, they'll get angry" I raised an eyebrow. "Why?" He let out a bark of a laugh. "Because all of them care about you and if they find out that I'm 'using' you to make Lily jealous" He said using quotation marks on using. "Even Sirius and Peter?" I asked with a smile. I saw him nod. I blushed again and started to play with my fingers. "Thank you for doing this Y/N, it really means a lot to me." James said and leaned down to peck my cheek, causing a couple of people to look our way and start to whisper. "As long as we keep things the same when we aren't with Lily, is that okay?" I mumbled afraid that he'll say no. "Of course, whatever you feel comfortable with and if you want to stop at any time we can." James said wrapping an arm back around my shoulder pulling my closer and I slowly put my own arms around his torso. "What's going on hereeee?" Two voices asked laughing, I looked up and saw Fabian and Gideon. I've never really talked to them but I sat next to Fabian in first year for charms. "I've just asked the lovely Y/N Y/L/N out on a date, and she said yes" James said loud enough for the whole common room to hear. I let out a small giggle playing along. "Well who's a lucky boy" Fabian (I think) said with a wink. "What's going on?" A new voice asked, I looked over to see Remus with a confused look with Lily behind him. I just remembered that they normally walk together back to the common room with each other after their free period. I looked over at James who nodded. "James em asked me out and I said yes" I said with another giggle. I saw Lily's mouth drop opened and Remus looked shocked. "You and James?" He asked, I nodded and put a piece of my hair behind my ear. "Yeah, isn't it great Remmy? You're two best friends together?" James said causing Remus to roll his eyes. "What about Lily?" He whispered to us knowing she is behind us but I knew she can still hear us as she leaned closer. I became nervous but James covered up for us. "I realised that it's never going to happen and recently I've been having feeling for Y/N. So I though fuck it and ask her out" I blushed and looked away as red creeped up to my cheeks and ears. "You hurt her Potter, I'll fucking kill you" He said before sitting on the sofa pulling out some homework. I looked over a Lily whose neck was turning red with anger. "You okay Evans? You look a little red" I said as James took my hand in his. "Nothing, I'm just tired!" She yelled slightly and ran upstairs. Over the next couple of days people found out about mine and James's 'relationship'. Everyone was fine with it of course, incept Evans and her group. I could hear them talk about me when I'm in the library studying or in class, anywhere actually. "Hey beautiful" Jame said from behind the sofa then jumped over to sit on my left. I felt myself blush, I knew he didn't mean it but it still made me feel good about myself. "Hey James, how was detention?" I asked with a laugh, he sent me a smirk. "Fine but it would of been so much better if you were there" He said pouting his lips, in a silly way, leaning in cause me to laugh and I push his cheek slightly. "You two are so cute, it makes me want to throw up" Peter said causing me to stick my tongue out at him. "Evans is glaring again" Sirius sang slightly as James wrapped an arm around me. "Do you think she likes James then?" Remus asked looking up from his homework. I looked at James with a small smile as I saw him look down, obviously trying to hide his blush. I felt my heart sting slightly, I have to admit I've developed a 'small' crush on James over the past couple of days...years. But I know it can never happen. I'm his fake girlfriend to help him get a girl jealous for fucks sake. "Nooo, she's just glaring at his girlfriend cause she has something in her eye" Sirius said sarcastically, I looked over at her with a small smirk but inside I felt really bad. "What's the matter?" James whispered in my ear. I shook my head indicating that nothing was wrong but I started to feel sick, it felt like everyone was looking at me. Everyone is whispering about me, I need to get out of here. "I'm going for a walk" I said standing up and pulled on my sleeves, but James grabbed my hand standing up with me. "I'll come with you" He said then ran a hand through my hair, I looked away trying not to get lost in his hazel eyes. "N-no, it's alright. Y-you stay with the boys" I whispered feeling the stares of the common room. "Okay, if you're sure. I'll see you later" He said and leaned down to kiss my cheek, his face lingering for a bit and I could feel his warm breath in my ear. I felt my heart pounding against my chest. He finally pulled away with a shy smile. "I'll see you later" He repeated, I nodded not trusting myself with words. I looked over at Remus who could tell something was wrong, he knows me too well. "I want to get out of here, I'll come with you. We haven't seen each other a lot over the past couple of days." Remus said as he packed away his homework. "Pads can you take my bag up to the dorm if I'm not back when you guys go up?" He asked causing Sirius to roll his eyes. "What did your last slave die of?" He said joking but nodded. "You don't have to come Remmy" I mumbled, knowing that if he asks questions I won't be able to lie to him. "Nah I want to" I finally gave up and nodded then we walked out of the common room. "What's the matter Y/N/N, you seem really off" Remus asked as we walked down the almost deserted corridor. "N-nothing, I'm fine. I'm really good." I said turning to look at him with a smile, he let out a sigh. "I've known you for four years now, I'm your best friend and your mine. I know you, I know when something is wrong" I felt my eyes start to tear up, bloody hell why did I have to fall for him? "Y/N?" He asked again and pulled me to the side sit down on a windowsill. I wiped my tears away with the back on my hands. "Sorry, I don't know what's the matter with me. I'm just really emotional this week, you know girl stuff" I said and giggled when I saw him go bright red. Then he took my hand in his, rubbing his thumb over mine. "You can tell me anything you know? I'm always here to listen" I nodded and put my head on his shoulder. "Hey! I've been looking for you two" A male voice said causing me to look up and I saw James walking towards us. I turned away not being able to look at his stupid perfect face. "I'll leave you two to it" Remus said and got up, I nodded and watched as he walked away. "What's the matter?" James asked me sitting where Remus was. I shook my head, I couldn't tell him he'll just laugh. "Nothing, I'm just not feeling well." Was all I said, he nodded and it went quite getting a bit awkward. "And then I told her no I won't-" We heard a voice, I looked down the corridor and saw Evans with a couple of her friends. I then felt James grab my face and push his lips on to mine. I didn't know what to do but before I could react probably he pulled away. I looked at him in shock, not knowing what to do. No words would come out of my mouth, he just stole my first kiss... "Ugh get a room you two" A voice said snapping me out of my thoughts, I looked over and saw Lily and her friends glaring at us slightly. "Well we had a whole corridor before you guys came along" James said wrapping an arm around my shoulder, I just let him still in shock. I saw all three of the girls role their eyes and walk off. Once they were out of sight I shot straight up and walked off not saying anything. "Y/N! Wait, what the matter?" He asked grabbing my arm but I snatched it away glaring at him. "You said no kissing on the lips!" I yelled slightly, causing him to raise his eyebrows. "Sorry, I don't know what came over me-" He tried to say but I cut him off. "That's not a bloody excuse you bastard" I said hitting his arm. "Ow! What was that for? Also what's the big deal it was just a quick kiss!" He yelled slightly obviously getting a bit annoyed. "You don't understand" I whispered looking away and tried to walk in the opposite direction but once again he grabbed my arm pulling me closer. "Then explain it to me, I said sorry what can we do it's happened!" He said pulling me towards him again. "You stole my first kiss!" I yelled out quietly in his face, his eyes went wide as I felt myself blush. "I-I'm really sorry I didn't know, I would take it back if I could" I rolled my eyes and looked down. "Well you can't" I mumbled, too embarrassed to look at him. "Hey, it's okay. Let's pretend it didn't happen or something" He suggested, I shook my head with a small shrug. "It's fine, at least my first kiss was with someone who cares a little about me and not some fuckboy like Sirius" I laughed trying to lighten the mood. "I care a lot about you Y/N, like so much." I smiled and put my arms around his neck, stepping on my tip toes to reach his shoulder. "Thanks for not laughing at me being fourteen nearly fifteen and not having my first kiss until today" I whispered pulling away and sent him a smile. "Alright, how about we go down to Hogsmeade this weekend. I'll buy you lunch and we can go to that bookshop your always in then maybe to Honeydukes. How about that?" He asked and ran his hand through my hair, causing my heartbeat to increase. "How do know I always in the old pages?" I asked getting a little confused. "O-oh em well em Remus goes in a lot and drags us in sometimes and em we see you" He said blushing, I raised my eyebrows. "Whenever Remus goes in it's only with me" I pushed slightly, he coughed and he made a noice which made his voice break. I laughed but tried to hide it. "Well em sometimes I go- go in there by myself to pick up some book and I see you" He finally said getting the words out, I rolled my eyes. "Was that hard to say?" I asked, he shook his head slightly. I laughed and took his hand in mine. "I'd love to go to Hogsmeade with you James" I answered him, he chuckled with a nod. "Good it's a date! I-I mean a fake date, sorry" He said scratching the back of his neck. "It's fine, I knew what you meant. Do you want to go back to the common room?" I asked, he smiled and nodded then took my hand in his again. The weekend finally came and I was really excited for mine and James's 'date', I wore minimal make up just some eye make up and clear lipgloss. I wore a black jumper, black jeans and a black coat. With black studded boots and a side bag. I looked at myself in the mirror and smiled, happy with the way I look. I sighed and walked downstairs to meet with James, I saw him standing near the fire with Remus and Peter. "Hey" I smiled shyly, James looked at me shock slightly. Remus wrapped an arm around around my shoulder. "You look really pretty Y/N, I hope you have fun" He said and kissed my head. I blushed with a smile. "Come on Moony, that's my girlfriend. And I think she looks beautiful" James said with a smirk, I started to play with the zip on my coat. "You think?" I asked, he nodded and leaned down to kiss my already red cheek. He then took my gloves hand in his. "Shall we go then?" He said looking at me for an answer. "Yeah, I'll see you two later!" I called back we walked out, I looked down at our still joined hands. "You can let go of my hand now" I mumbled, why was he acting like this when Evans isn't around? "I don't want to" Was all he said, I raised my head to look at him to see he's already looking down at me. We arrived in the cold weather as the snow came down lightly, James and I stood close as we walked down the cobble path. "Where do you want to go first?" James asked looking around, I shrugged and pulled away from him slightly remembering that we aren't actually together. "Hey! Come here, I'm cold" James laughed pulling me toward him again, I blushed. "Jammmes" I mumbled causing him to remove his touch from mine. "What's the matter?" He asked with raised eyebrows, I sighed looking away shivering slightly. "You want to get lunch in the three broomsticks and talk?" He asked, I nodded and let him put an arm around my shoulder as he lead me into the small pub. We found a booth near the back. "Do you want a warm butterbeer? I told you yesterday that all this was my treat" I shook my head, already feeling guilty. "No, no. I brought my own money-" I tried to say but he cut me off with a kiss on my cheek. "Sit down and let me get us some drinks" He said moving out the way for me to sit down, I sent him a weak smile and slid into the booth. I waited for a couple of minutes before James came back with two mugs of butterbeer and sat down next to me. "Thank you" I whispered looking at him with another smile. He took a sip of his with a nod. "It's alright, now what's the matter? Is it because I kissed you-" I placed my hand on top of his shaking my head. "No James it's not that well it is and it isn't. You see, you said that we'd only act like a couple around Lily but even when it's just us two you'll hold my hand or kiss my cheek and well I just feel like you're messing with my feelings" I mumbled in a low voice looking away from him. "Y/N I'm so sorry, I didn't know I was making you uncomfortable. I was just trying to make it more realistic, do you want to stop this? Tell people that it just isn't working out and we're better at friends" He said moving away from me slightly. "No we don't have to do that, I think it's working with Lily. She keeps on glaring at me and shit, so-shit Evans is there" I said looking away from the table she just sat at with Severus Snape, he looked over with a small smile. "Look away James, she looking at us" I said grabbing his hand and pulling it up near my cheek with a big smile. "You're the best fucking friend ever, you know that" He said and traced a finger over my cheek. I blushed with a giggle and I took a side glance at the other two. "Okay, she keeps on looking over and rubbing Snape's arm and laughing. She's trying to make you look at her so don't, right now he's blushing bright red and keeps on moving so she must be messing with his legs or thighs." I said and ran a hand through his hair and laughed again, but it fell slightly as I looked into his eyes and played with his messy hair. "How do you know all of this?" He asked snapping me out of my thoughts. I smiled shyly and took away my hand from his jet black hair. "Before this year I didn't talk to anyone but Remus, instead of talking I studied people. And I have three older sisters who have different guys around every time I'm home plus both my parents are having affairs, my mother with my dad's brother who's always round 'because he gets lonely' and my father with my mothers best friend. Who happened to work in the same place and go on 'work trips' together. I know body language" I laughed but stopped when I saw James's worried face. "What?" I asked confused. "I didn't know things were bad at home, I'm sorry Y/N" He said playing with my fingers, I let out a small chuckle. "It's fine, it's been like that for as long as I can remember" I sniffed, I've only just realised that I told him all of this. I haven't even told Remus. "If you ever need to talk, I'm here" I smiled as a thank you. I saw out of the corner of my eye Lily stand up and looked like she was about to come over then I don't know what came over me, it might of been how close we were from the whispering but I closed my eyes and shut the gap between us and rested my hands on his shoulder moving my lips against his, hinting for him to kiss me back which took him a couple of seconds. One of his hands went to my cheek and the other in my hair, his lips pressed harder on mine slightly as he leaned over me ever so slightly back as if to show he was in some sort of power over me. I forgot about the world around us and I forgot we were in a public place and snogging, all I was focused on was his lips. My lips parted slightly out of instinct, this was only my second kiss but I felt like I've done it all before. His left hand moved from my cheek to my thigh, gripping causing me to let out a small moan in surprise as I've never been touched like this before. We finally pulled away from each other out of breath, I opened my eyes to see James with a his eyes still closed and a young school boy smile. His eyes slowly opened and I wiped my puffy lips, I looked around to see no one looking at us thank Merlin. But Evans and Snape had gone. I turned my head back around to James to see him in the same place with the same smile. I blushed at how close we are still. "Hi" He breathed, I giggled and looked down to see his hand still on my thigh and now the other gripping onto my hand. "Hey" I whispered back looking at his swollen lip, my eyes went wide when I realised what I'd just done. "I'm so sorry Ja-" I tried to say but he placed his lips back on mine for a short kiss. He pulled away with another smile and I blushed. "You know, I've been wanting you to do that for a while. I haven't actually liked Lily for about a year, it's just the boys who think I do and make fun so I just went along with it. But I've liked for for a while, I've always thought you wee very beautiful and cute I just didn't know how to tell you because I thought you liked Remus" James finished his little speech and I blushed with a big smile. "I've liked you for a while as well" I admitted and he smiled brightly blushing also. "So em do y-you want to be real girlfriend?" James asked and he looked down at his hands which were still on my thighs, his thumb rubbing circles on the jean material. "Yeah, yeah I'd really like that" I smiled as he grinned at me and leaned back in to kiss me. I brought my hands up to his hair as he dug his fingernails into my hips. He soon ran his tongue across my bottom lip and pushed it between my lips slightly causing me to open my mouth, I heard him groan as tongues clashed and I gripped onto his hair tighter. He started to suck on my tongue and I tried to hold down my moan but failed as one escaped from my throat. I tried to pull away to breath but he pulled me back in and I giggled against his lips. "Welllll, what's going on here!" A new voice said causing both of us to jump apart, my cheeks felt like they were on fire as I saw the boys staring down into our booth. "Oh hey guys" James said wrapping an arm around my waist pulling me closer to him again. I bit my already puffy lips when I saw James's. "Nice lips mate" Sirius said sitting down in the booth and slid across to reach me so that there is room for the other two. "Fuck off Pads" James mumbled blushing and wiped them but kept his arm up to hide them slightly. "I-I didn't know y-you t-two were so em so-" Remus said trying to find the right words. "Into the stage of sucking each other's faces off whenever they can?" Sirius finished from him taking my butterbeer from my hands and I sent him a playful glare. "Y-yeah that stage" Remus muttered blushing, I rolled my eyes knowing that he was uncomfortable with just seen James and I snog...Oh shit James and I just snogged. "What's matter Remus, you jealous?" James laughed and leaned down to kiss my cheek but started to go a bit lower causing my breath to get caught in my throat so I stomped on his foot hard causing him to draw back from the spot beneath my jaw with a hiss. "I'm not jealous Potter, I would just prefer if you didn't suck on my best friends jaw, who I see as a little sister, in front of me" Remus snapped slightly but I saw the playful look in his eyes. "Love you too Remus" I laughed taking my drink back off Sirius. Remus, Sirius and Peter soon went into their own conversation leaving James and I to whisper to each other. "So much for a date" I giggled as he took my hand in his once again. "I think it went pretty well, I got to snog you twice, admit my feelings for you and ask you to be my real girlfriend. If I'm being honest I'd say it's the best date I've had so far" I blushed and leaned in to slowly kiss him, he reached up to cradle my cheek. My lips parted slightly getting used to the feel of kissing James and in front of other people, to be honest I didn't care what the people around us think. "Oh fuck, get a room you two" Sirius groaned making us pull away. "Like you can talk Sirius. Every time I'm in the common room you're sucking off another girls face" I laughed and he glared at me playfully. "So maybe we can go on a prober date soon without theses bastards, what do you think?" James whispered in my ear making shivers run down my spine and I felt him smirk against my skin. "Yeah, I'd like that" I said back. He grinned like a mad mad then put his head on top of mine and started to talk to the others as I breathed in his scent. Tabacco, coffee and men's aftershave. I wrapped my arms around his torso feeling safe in his arms. This boy is going to be the death of me. --------- Thanks for reading ❤️

2016:
A year of transition, of change. When I started writing this, I wanted it to be a melding of world events and my life, but it turned out to mostly be my life. Whoops. Anway, here’s my take on the craziness of last year:
2016. A sentence that begins with quotation marks savoring of both endings and beginnings. The last year of chlorine, of perpetual exhaustion. A year of anxiety and apprehensions, applications and lessened application in the pool. A year of decimals--disappointing decimals, that is, slightly more than there were last year. Of yellow ribbons instead of white. Of love for the girls on your team--and those annoying boys, too. Of that mattering much more than the times.
A year of breakfast, of starting something silly with your friends because it’s second-semester senior year and what the heck. A year of dancing. Of learning to let go of leading and letting the up-and-comers take charge.
Again, a year of uncertainty. Of loading admissions portals with your eyes squeezed shut, terrified to see the results. Of celebrating good news and bemoaning the bad. Of finding new friends in strange places--in potatoes, of all things. Of knowing exactly what you want and spending spring break working to make it happen.
But then: a year of the guidance counselor materializing above you as you sit in the hallway with Maddie, Jeffrey, and Frankie. Of the valedictorian standing behind her. Of an invisible choke hold around your neck as you realize what’s happening and you know you should be exhilarated but you just aren’t. Of lilies, clutched in your arms, that break your heart but not because they’re beautiful. Of going home and crying in the bathtub because you feel like a piece of shit for wanting to throw away something that so many people you know would be incredibly grateful to have. Of revisiting a school you’d entirely written off so long ago, of realizing yes, you could love this place, too.
Still, though, a year of picking the sensible option, because that’s what you always do--your heart is forever muzzled, your mind with its hands firmly grasped on the leash.
A year of realizing that you can’t make a hero out of a person, because they’re bound to let you down, bound to be just as flawed as everyone else. Of proving him wrong, of adrenaline-rushed match play because that spot is ours, goddammit, we’re boss ass bitches who are fucking CLOSERS and we’ll be damned if politics are going to get in the way of that. Of deuce, of sheepish laughter. Of sunburns. Of dinner on the river bank. Of calls from the hotel front desk and pretending like we don’t know what’s going on, that people haven’t been banging on our door for the past hour even though we’re just inside hanging out.
A year of a swanky dinner and ball gowns. Of speeding along in a jolting red sports car with a king, a prince, and your best friend with you. Of driving to the roller rink, contentedness emanating throughout you, with “Scar Tissue” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers illuminating the dark roads packed in by corn.
A year of finally not caring about a class. Of frauleins, frown lines, of saying plEASE in the most nasally voice you can summon. A year of Le Petit Prince, of right wingin’, bitter clingin’ proud clingers. A year of “Copperhead Road,” of Microsoft Paint.
And, finally, a year of endings, of goodbyes. Of lasts. Of it all feeling surreal for the next three weeks. Of knowing the next time you walk through those doors, you won’t have your backpack and it will all feel different, changed, permanently.
A year of ducking out early, of school being out of session for UDHS but still in session at FSU. Of, a week earlier, overconfidence at sectionals and paying dearly for it. Of petty parents and unrelenting shame as you trudge off the court. Of, today, craving redemption with every atom in your body and attempting to contain the nerves that come with that. Of an ace on match point. Of 6-3, 6-3. Of a win at regionals. Of the bus breaking down in the parking lot, but that being surprisingly okay because oh my god, it was the last day of school with these people forever and we just won regionals, too. Of sprawling out on the sun-drenched, dusty red courts with our water jugs in hand, again watching the up-and-comers rally half-lazily, half-seriously because they know their time will come, too. Of Ivanhoe’s with your best friends, sitting at a booth awkwardly because it all just ended and no one knows where to tiptoe first in this vast, exciting unknown.
A year of semi-state. Of being ridiculously, completely the underdogs. Of entertaining hope but entering the court with the suspicion that today, you’re playing for personal honor instead of team victory. Of personal victory and team defeat--again, another ending, another fig falling off the tree, spoiled.
A year of mortarboards and gowns. Of walking out of the auditorium at the front of the line, past all those parents who have shown you kindness over the years. Of emerging outside into the setting sun, laughing and hugging. Of pictures. Of Dairy Queen with your grandparents. Of post-graduation s’mores with friends, the reality of it all still not reality. Of never-ending parties and crockpots of pulled pork.
A year of t-shirts--lots and lots of t-shirts. Of ink and squeegees and screens. Of conveyor belts and boxes.
A year, still, of tennis. Of deuce, endlessly. Of small redemptions, revenge served. Of penguins. Of letting your partner’s ego run rampant because it’s funny and honestly kind of entertaining--then, of seeing him defer to the alpha tennis male. Then, beating said alpha tennis male and his partner. Of being a dark horse and #norespect.
A year of new cities. Of streets and avenues, crowds of people who don’t give a shit about you and honestly, that’s wonderful. Of mind-blowing cookies and the musical you’ve been dying to see. Of renowned paintings and sculptures, of a lush green square plopped in between the skyscrapers. Of wandering the High Line on Bastille Day with an old friend. Of returning home with a hunger for more.
A year of summer bonfires with friends old and friends really quite recent. Of kayaking down the river, letting the current pull you, of laughing when the others get stuck on a sandbank. Of county road car adventures. Of blue raspberry creamy slushes and that disgusting candy cotton Mountain Dew concoction you refused to try.
A year of an excruciatingly long July because you can’t wait to JUST GET THE HECK OUT OF HERE ALREADY. Of scouring Pinterest for dorm decorating ideas. Of packing, and, finally, more goodbyes. Of not knowing how to say goodbye to the best friend you’ve had since fourth grade. Of not crying until you’re on the interstate and not really knowing why, because this is what you’ve been looking forward to for years. Of the bumper-to-bumper traffic on the way into campus. Of you, your roommate, and your mom carrying your stuff into the dorm.  Of initial awkwardness--with everyone. Of having to walk away before your mom even gets in the car to drive away because she’s your best friend and you know you’re about to lose it.
A year of sweltering heat that first week, yet trekking all over the campus you don’t yet know in spite of it. Of adventures with people who will turn up again later. Of wandering through the art museum with people you’re pretty sure are going to be your friends.
A year of finding your people--the ones who love books and learning and early mornings just as much as you do. Of early Saturday morning runs through campus, when it’s empty and covered in a layer of dew. Of sitting in your friend’s dorm room in your pajamas as half the floor troops down the hallway for a night out. Of being perfectly, incandescently happy right where you are. Of sitting in the quad on a blanket with your friends, gossiping about boys. Of weekend afternoons spent at the library.
A year of enlightenment, of lots and lots of reading. Of timid knocks on professors’ doors for office hours. Of falling in love with the subjects you didn’t expect. Of call-out meetings. Of weekly deadlines and parliamentary procedure.
A year of late nights studying, but not always. Of staying up until 6 with a boy who, in the end, can’t ever say what he feels. Of kissing him, of disappointment in that. Of silence. Of realizing that you really didn’t care that much about him, either.
A year of nonsensical videos, of 9 P.M. runs to the cafeteria with your friends for donuts and hot chocolate. A year of exploring a new town. Of downtown festivals and restaurants and farmer’s markets.
A year of color runs. Of swim club. Of coming to the realization that working out is still a necessity, even when you’re walking five miles a day.
A year of SNL, of David S. Pumpkins, of Kate McKinnon’s Hillary Clinton. A year of disappointment and realization on a national scale. Of waking up on November 10th to the results you never expected. Of numbness, of shock. Of rude relatives on Facebook. Of sorrow.
A year of more cities--cities of the windy variety, that is. Of long hours in committee, of new friends. Of finally being home. Of it feeling like it’s been a day since you last saw some of your high school friends and running out of things to talk about once you’ve gossiped about your former classmates with the others. Of starting to appreciate your hometown, of loving it for its flaws, road entirely made of fast food chains and potholes and all.
A year of deciding to trust the boy who, if you’re being honest with yourself, you’ve been intrigued by for a good chunk of the semester. Of illusory hope. Of realizing that he’s either completely full of shit or great at telling one helluva fish story. (Probably both.) Of naively, stupidly looking for answers when you’ve been reminded that real-life isn’t like a book--no denouement, no closure, no loose ends wrapped up in a nice little bow. Of making peace with this.
A year of your first collegiate finals week, a week slower than any other the whole semester. Of packing, again. Of going home, however temporary it may be. Of living halfway out of your suitcase and your old dresser. Of all the adults in your life and the same questions, over and over.
A year of long road trips. Of the puppy bothering you the entire time. Of cousins and and aunts and uncles and grandparents. Of deciding that your grandmother has finally, really, truly lost it. Of tubing at night, looking not down the hill but up, feeling the ice dust through the air as you slide down the chute at a breakneck pace. Of unconventional New Year’s Eve shenanigans, because when have you and Krissy ever been conventional? Of gingerbread and hot glue guns and fireworks.
And, finally, the ending punctuation; a year of deciding, of choosing, to leave the things and people that belong in 2016 in the past, your eyes focused only straight ahead, on January 1st.

He knew that some students are not able to travel to school by car or bus etc because of many reasons such as money, so he provided a free and healthy way for the student’s outcome of transportation . This skinny kid from Akron who missed 83 days of school in the fourth grade had big dreams.” Lebron was very excited that his school’s grand opening was just tomorrow and he couldn’t believe his dream finally came true.He had big dreams as a kid and one of them was to build a school for the kids that aren’t able to go for many reasons. In part of the quote, it states that “A skinny kid from Akron who missed 83 days of school had big dreams” From this it basically says that even though as a kid Lebron missed school he still had a dream which was to create a school. This can tell young kids to elderly people that if you are able to make your dream come true then do it.
Venus Williams is an icon because she fought to obtain equal rights and equal pay for female athletes and she motivates others to fight for equal gender rights too.Venus Williams believes and advocates for female athletes to earn the same pay as male athletes.“ I think in the Grand Slam events, it should be equal pay, and the ladies should do something about it instead of just accepting it for years to come”( 5 ). This quote demonstrates how Williams is motivating herself and other women in all types of careers to mobilize to get what they deserve from their work instead of accepting what they get which is often less than what males get. Venus tells the world that females deserve equal pay and gender should not dictate what a person earns, but instead that talent and merit should be rewarded. Venus’ statement could also be related to all women in society who don't get something they really should get on the basis of sex. It motivates women to fight for their right to equal pay and freedom from discrimination.
The ESPN article (2013) explores how Venus Williams has strongly informed her justification that female athletes truly deserve equal pay. Venus wanted to see this issue resolved in her lifetime. . “… you get to this stage, and you’re told you’re not the same as a boy …”( 2 ) In this quote Williams shared her own experience of being told that females are good but not as good as male athletes. This represents the common issue that women dream, work as hard as they can and sacrifice their personal life, but in the end they are not compensated and assigned less value for their hard work. This is not at all the same case for men. Roger Federer won the men's championship with $ 1.13 million in prize money. However, his female opponent Venus Williams only won $ 1.08 million, but they both played equally well, but the male athlete was paid more than the female athlete, which is completely unfair. Williams spoke out against this inequality a day before the Wimbledon final. Williams addressed a meeting, urging the Wimbledon and French Open to pay male and female players equally. As a result, she was the first female athlete to receive equal pay.
Venus Willams is recognized as an icon by fighting to give equal rights and pay for the female athletes and she has motivated others to fight for equal gender rights . These are the reasons why these three athletes are shown as icons around the world.

And [one of those things] is that money is a fundamentally social thing in a much deeper way than, say, two-party encrypted communication You have to start thinking about governance, social contracts, common shared expectations in this community, how do changes get made, how do we decide how changes get made, how do we discuss things. These are all very political things.”

Prediction of the Week
Sharp Bitcoin Rally in 2019 Unlikely
According to Emmanuel Goh, a former JPMorgan Chase derivatives trader and founder of crypto data firm Skew, Bitcoin is unlikely to recover its former five-digit highs in 2019. Goh has noted that, according to options traders, there is a five percent chance that Bitcoin will reach $10,000 by September of this year. The trader also noted that there is even a $20,000 call option for this June, but the probability of BTC reaching that price is zero, as it was likely a “bullish trade that was made last year when investors were still discussing the short-term possibility of making new highs.”

Writing for Something Real-Draft
“Who are your audiences?” “What do you truly want to say in this essay, except those simple personal ideas?” “Why should anyone care about what you write?” “Why should your essay even exist?” ...Before Mr. Wilkins, my English language teacher in Grade 11 and 12, taught me English writing in completely unique way, I never considered about English writing from these perspectives. When he asked me those sharp and incisive questions during the first week of his class, I could understand none of them but shocked by how “crazy” and strange this teacher was.
Either because of English as my second language or due to my “Chinese-English” stereotyped writing styles and habits, I had been writing in English only to finish assignments for ten school years. When I wrote in English, I was actually translating stories from Chinese, saying out my ideas in English, and trying to fill in certain frames formats with thoughts and narratives. The beauty of language, the depth of thesis, the innovation of structure, and the purpose of my writing are aspects I worked on a lot more in Chinese writing. English writing was never a literary creation to me. Luckily, such method of writing continued bringing me good grades out of few efforts. But when Mr. Wilkins started teaching me English writing, my old lazy method no longer worked.
He assigned me to read a book named ‘To Kill a Mocking Bird”. And questions in the beginning paragraph were some of his comments on my third draft of a letter to myself based on this book. When I wrote first three drafts, I wrote a letter to myself—Yiwen Bao, just as writing a dairy on summary and reflections of my reading experience. He gave me a score of 3 out of 7. I was confused but still confident on my old “successful” writing conventions, only revised my grammar errors and added on more interesting thoughts on characters in the book. Then he called me to talk face-to-face. I could clearly see disappointment and discontent on his young face. Those questions were flying out of his mouth, leaving a long silence and an awkward me. I learned how serious he was about writing and at that night I started to thinking about ways other than self-talk, to answer the question on what the true aim of my letter could be. He didn’t leave me lost but helped me answering those questions by guiding me to take on a character’s voice and write a letter as this character to herself. We analyzed different characters and their significant plots together, getting a better understanding of the book. My fourth draft was a completely different one, not in sense of language use, but “I” was the 8-year-old Scout in the book writing a letter to 6-year-old myself, to a real audience not teacher or grader. This was the first time I wrote a text type like a dairy that I had clear specific purpose of reflecting on my growth in two years and changes of understandings on social justice. Mr. Wilkins opened a new world of writing for me, a world where writing is a meaningful work that could not only practice my language skills but also enhance my understanding of related readings.
Mr. Wilkins continued emphasizing the significance of writing for a purpose by asking me to write a rationale for each writing. He taught me that everything I wrote had to have specific audiences and he would ask me to write as many drafts as I made my writing a real meaningful one. In rationales, I reflected on my “purpose”, understood the identity of audiences, thought about how chosen text type facilitated my expression of ideas and how register and language influenced my communication with audiences.
Not only to write for a purpose, Mr. Wilkins also guided me to cared more about my language. In his class, I spent weeks exploring topics on language like “how does the usage of argumentative language change between audio-visual medium and electronic medium when discussing global issues” and “How does repetition of words affect audiences’ comprehension of the importance of information in a writing”. I got access to new texts such as Robert Frost’s poem Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. By analyzing them by myself instead of searching for “argumentative language” and “repetition” straightly online, I learned those more in depth and could apply them better in my writing. Also, I was more adept at taking on diverse voices of people: a lecturer, an imaginary future character extended from one in a book; a football fan, etc. Gradually, I regarded my English writing assignments more and more as serious literacy works.
Various text types Mr. Wilkins introduced to me were another useful tool to write true writings. Besides letter and dairy, writing eulogy, argumentative essay and speech enriched my experience of communicating with different audiences, in formal, argumentative, ironic or collaborative registers. And writing in unfamiliar text types pushed me to understand topics and analyzing readings from various perspectives. He even taught me to write pamphlets which I thought would never be taught in an English writing class before. However, just as getting his idea of practicing speaking like an advertisement designer, I eventually understood functions of all his writing assignments.
After two years, my view of English writing changed dramatically. English writing is now about true literacy to me, a serious work of not just writing stories and completing sentences, but also lots of analysis, knowledge, skills and talents required for a fabulous work. In last semester of high school, Mr. Wilkins marked 7 out of 7 in one of my dairy on “greater poverty than nothing to eat” and appraised my construction of paragraphs, recognition of audiences, use of language such as putting quotation marks on “food” and “donate” because they were all specific to the prompt, purpose and audiences. Since that first letter to myself, I has always reflected on whom my audiences were, what I truly wanted to say, how my writing could be useful or meaningful to my audiences and what the real purpose is when I’m writing. In a paper on film Gattaca I wrote last year for anthropology class, I voiced as a 21-year-old naturally born girl from now living in 23rd century where most people were born through genetic selection. I kept clear reminders in my mind: my audiences were scientists working on perfect genes and my purpose of writing was to analyze how technology shaped people to be unthinkably dependent on genes to decide meanings of life in a future world. After entering university, I have a stronger sense that Mr. Wilkins was the influential person remarkable to my literacy development. It’s he that changed me from writing for assignments and teachers to write for something real.
