Worldbuilding Progress: Angel City is Taking Shape

Today was one of those rare productive writing days where everything just clicked. I spent most of my time working on the Restless location sheets, and honestly, I’m finally starting to feel like Angel City is turning into a real, lived-in place rather than just a setting where things happen. Getting all the little details down—how the city is structured, what different areas feel like, and how they tie into the story—has been a challenge, but it’s also been a lot of fun.

One of the biggest things I worked on today was The Black Tooth Grin Bar. This place has been in the story for a while, but it never felt fully realized until now. It started as just a shady bar where mercenaries and criminals could meet, but now it’s got history. It was originally a Prohibition-era speakeasy that survived by paying off the right people, then became a haven for smugglers and lowlifes as The Narrows fell apart. Now, it’s a neutral ground for people who don’t want to be seen, and Jim Bleak, the owner, enforces a strict “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. It’s got that worn-down, blues-rock atmosphere—jukebox playing outlaw country, cigarette smoke lingering in the air, cracked leather booths, and a general sense that bad things have gone down here. Basically, my kind of place (in fiction, at least).

I also introduced Vincent Marquez and Richard Harris, two characters that are going to have a huge impact on Angel City. Marquez is the corrupt mayor, the kind of guy who keeps things running just well enough to stay in power but has no problem letting crime fester as long as it benefits him. He’s the type that smiles for the cameras while making backroom deals with the worst people imaginable. Then there’s Richard Harris, who’s on the opposite end of things—a rich, spoiled kid who thrives on watching people suffer. Originally, I had him tied to the mob, but I decided he’s more interesting as some entitled asshole who sees the world as his playground. He’s got power, but not in a traditional crime boss way—more in a “I’ll ruin your life for fun” way. Which, in a lot of ways, is even worse.

Speaking of corruption and decay, The Narrows is finally getting flushed out. It’s the part of Angel City that used to be a booming industrial district but has since rotted into a lawless, crime-ridden area full of abandoned factories, illegal dealings, and people just trying to survive. This is where The Black Tooth Grin thrives—where the people who don’t fit anywhere else go. It’s grimy, dangerous, and completely off the radar for anyone with a conscience.

On the other end of the spectrum, I also worked on The Black Emerald Forest, which is getting more depth. It’s the eerie, sprawling forest outside of Angel City, full of history, secrets, and things better left undisturbed. I’m still figuring out how much supernatural influence I want in it, but there’s definitely something wrong about it—something that people whisper about but never truly understand.

Overall, today was a solid writing day. Angel City is finally coming together, and I’m getting more excited about how all these locations and characters are going to interact. Now if I could just finish the book instead of expanding the world forever, that’d be great.

introduced to it by levi, does it every morning and every night to collect respective chests, used to do lessons at the dinner table but got scolded by barb bc of the pinging

does it bc diavolo reminds him to do it everyday, really enjoys learning new languages, is very insistent on completing friend quests

could not figure out how to download the app, had solomon install it and open it for him, takes a long time on lessons from trying to figure out the interface, gets perfect scores on each lesson

solomon:

maintains a streak that’s one day higher than lucifer’s, maintains it for the sole sake of his ego, is probably in a low league bc he does the quickest lessons just for the streak

luke:

does his lessons multiple times daily and is passionate about it, tries to use phrases he learns to translate recipes in other languages, is the one that convinced simeon to try it

Thought about the fabsnap profiles and an idea popped into my head
