RIP Trugoy The Dove, De La Soul co-founder/rapper 🙏🏾
I found out this news late af but I’m not gonna lie this one hit me HARD. 😢
Back in high school, De La Soul was everything I aspired to. They are the rap group that made me want to seriously do music.
Their crazy ass rhymes and daring use of sampling Old School classic records and turning them into a whole new sound (big up their producer on the first album, DJ Prince Paul) just blew my teenaged mind at the same. I had loved Run-DMC, Boogie Down Productions, UTFO, Doug E Fresh, Slick Rick etc before they came along but once I heard their debut single “Plug Tuning” they became the nee standard that I aspired to.

Right after my high school best friend Anton Lewis heard that sontg, he immediately renamed himself the rapper A Le Wiz and I became MC Number One lol (tbh I first used the name MC EZ Rock but then Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock came out with “It Takes Two” so I had to change it lol).
Then we got our hands on De La Soul’s debut album “3 Feet High And Rising” and became even more obsessed with their super intelligent and poetic rhyme style that didn’t focus on sounding “tough” or “street”.
youtube
Songs like “Potholes In My Lawn”, “The Magic Nunber” and “Buddy” featuring The Jungle Bros, Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah and even more.
youtube
And then their mosnter jam “Me Myself And I” became THE JAM of summer 1989 and literally everyone worldwide knew and loved De La Soul which made me super happy and proud. 😊
youtube
Thank you Posdnous, Trugoy The Dove and DJ Pace Master Mase for so many years of great music and even greater memories over the years to the soundtrack of later hits like “Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)”, “A Rollerskating Jam Called ‘Saturdays’”.
youtube
Not to mention Trugoy The Dove’s awesome feature on the hook of A Tribe Called Quest’s classic, “Award Tour”. 🙌🏾 (RIP to my all time fave Trini rapper Phife Dawg from A Tribe Called Quest, who passed away back in 2016🕊️)

Rest In Power to the icon, David Jude Jolicoeur AKA Trugoy The Dove. Thanks for everything. De La Soul forever! 🙏🏾

Rest In Paradise
🕊️
Dear Dave,
You were the heart of our group. You brought so much creativity, energy, and passion to our music, and your influence will be felt for years to come.
Your passing is a great loss not only to us, but also to the entire hip-hop community. You were a true artist who used music to inspire and uplift others, and you will be deeply missed by all who knew you.
This is heavy on our hearts and minds but we are smiling and even laughing at all the great times we shared with you. As we attempt to navigate this world without you, we stand grateful and proud of all you accomplished on this earth.
We would like to say thank you Dave for being a big brother. Thank you for being a friend. Thank you for the wise words placed in your verses. Thank you for the music you produced that is loved by so many. Thank you for never wanting to compromise the quality of our brand. Thank you for helping us become a group that will remain etched in the timeline of hip hop culture as well as the fabric of music and for now on when we perform “Ring Ring Ring Ha Ha Hey” we will say “2-2-2-2-222 we got an angel in heaven who can talk to you”
Love you Dave!
Sincerely,
Merce (Pos)

“It’s hard to overstate the impact that De La Soul had on hip-hop music, and particularly what would come to be known as “alternative” hip-hop music, a category that De La has a decent claim to having straight-up invented.”
Jack Hamilton at Slate. De La Soul’s Trugoy Is Dead, and With Him Goes One of Music’s Greatest Groups
Their first four albums could go up against just about anyone’s.

There’s no group or artist that I have spent more time listening to than De La Soul. Since I was 8 years old spinning De La Soul is Dead on the boom box on repeat (while organising my X-Men cards) they have been a treasured constant in my life. Truly saddened to hear of Trugoy’s passing. RIP Plug Two, thanks for all the incredible music!
Do yourself a favour and go listen to all of De La’s albums when they *finally* become available on streaming services on the 3rd March. You won’t regret it!
