I despise the weird way writers talk about themselves online these days. This weird loserish persona, manner of talking fluctuating into a desire to be a cool it girl and the obsession with babitz and didion. I can’t articulate this thought perfectly, and other people have already pointed it out better, but I’m mostly bothered by the strange cadence, how everything is about being a typical #writer ™ the “are any other writers out there feeling…” style posting. The self promo threads. Tweets with four photos of women thinking and it’s like “me writing my weekly substack.” It all feels devoid, like the writing doesn’t seem to matter all, just that they can be called something. And this strange disconnect of posing the question, “am I the only one” when art is often a deliberate act that involves knowing you are not the only one. And if you feel alone maybe write something about it rather than pose yourself as this unique loser who is so different so curious if anyone can possibly be the same. Idk. And maybe that’s real hater hater vibes but it’s like they don’t even notice that the people they admire, who feature in their aestheticized idea of writing, don’t talk or act or think about themselves that way. Not just the writers of the past but the present too. Which if they want to I guess what does it matter to me, but it’s so…self serving isn’t the word but at present I don’t know what the right one is.

I've always wondered why Aroace peeps feel excluded, when there's lots of cool friendships in media out there. But the more I interact with people across communities, I realize why they feel excluded, especially among their own LGBT peers. Two male characters are really good friends? They must be gay and kissing and doing naughty things! Two women spending time together? Must be lesbians! Two or more characters of any gender getting along just fine? Nope, must be all dating!

Like, I understand shipping characters is fun, I myself do it from time to time, but exploring characters' friendships I find much more appealing cause there's a charm to friendships that I believe romantic relationships ain't got. We gotta learn to appreciate the friends we have, for their unconditional platonic love is as strong as any romantic love, if not stronger.

That's why I will propose to myself a slight challenge: Aroaceptember. Sadly, I can't promise I will be able to draw something daily under this theme because I still gotta work to survive, but I'll try my best to, and in the days I can't, I can talk about my favorite friendship dynamics I've seen in media I've partaken in, or share fanfics/fanart of friendships that I've liked.
