when you think about it, it is rather insane that Vis definitive trait that makes him unlike everyone else is simply having a moral backbone

Wilder Girls Ch. 5
Today, I got through Ch. 5 of Wilder Girls. Below is my summarization and thoughts so far.
📖📚
Hetty is finding it hard to forget about all the food they threw out. She feels guilty.
Welch confronts Hetty. Telling her she needs to snap out of her funk pretty much. Get her friendship with Resse back and go back to normal, p3ople are watching. Welch doesn't wanna hear that it was Reese who started it, and why should she be th3 one to fix things. Still, Welch pretty much tells her to do it or else. Why does Welch care so much? Does she think Hetty will slip and say something? does she think people will wonder? If so, who cares.
As Welch is walking away, Hetty says, "Doesn't it bother you? Lying to everyone? Hetty says it looks like Welch wants to say "yeah it does," but all she does is shrugg and say, "So?" Is Welch really so cold? Is she hiding her emotions trying to stay tough?
When the Tox first started, they didn't really have a name for it. Hetty remembers watching Mr. Harker; Reese's dad, get sick th3n one day he's throwing up black sludge, grainy like dirty. The next day, he runs past the fence. Never to be seen again.
Hetty goes to make up with Reese. Reese asks her what's wrong. Hetty must not hide emotions well. Saying she's okay, they start talking. Reese asks if Hetty saw him, any trace of him, or their old house. Hetty tells her no. What did Reese expect? Hetty to go out there, and oh shit there's Reese's dad?
Hetty says she's going to find Byatt that she was supposed to come out and talk with them. On her way in to find Byatt, a girl comes running out to tell her that Byatt is having a flair up. Hetty is so confused she was just with her, not even 10 minutes ago, she says.
Hetty runs through the school looking for Byatt. Finally, in the kitchen, she finds Byatt on the ground almost seezing with pain, but she can't tell what's wrong, and Byatt can't speak. Someone goes to find Welch to come help. Hetty goes to tell Byatt that Welch is coming, that she'll take care of her. Byatt goes to say something, but Reese puts her hand over her mouth. Telling her to save her voice and strength. Why would Reese do that? Are her and Byatt suspicious of Welch?
Welch has the Boat Shift girls, minus Hetty, take Byatt up to the infirmary. Apparently, the Boat Shift girls are in charge of helping with stuff like that. As they are taking Byatt up, she smashes something into Hettys' hand. Hetty sees its the crackers Byatt had when she found her. Welch sees these and tells her to put them back in rations. Food is food. Hetty can't believ3 what she just heard. Reese tells Welch nah we'll keep it. Welch doesn't argue. Is there a message in the crackers? Why the hell does Welch care so much about these, yet just tossed a shit ton of food into the ocean.
Reese and Hetty are worried about Byatt so much so that there beef they had is squashed. Using all their focus on worrying about Byatt. They end up not being able to sleep. Hettys worried Byatt won't come back down from the infirmary. Seeing as most girls don't. Resse says she will, hetty says don't promise something you can't keep. Reese then says I didn't promise.

“It’s… it’s a shame, Kenan.”
“What is?” His voice is hushed, and I know he knows what I’m about to say.
“That we never had the chance to find out if we’re each other’s Pazu and Sheeta.”
When he doesn’t say anything, I step so close I can count the freckles on his neck. His breath hitches in his throat and his gaze drops to my lips.
“I wish we had that time,” I whisper. “I really do. I wish—”

📚 Jan 5, 2024
I hope everyone's year has been off to a good start so far 💖 I want to read more this year, so here are my reading ambitions! (I'd say goals but there's no way I'll get through all these)
Tumblr media
starting off with books I actually just need to finish. I started Persuasion years ago, but the rest were all started in the last year and I've very excited to finish them :) (although TBOSAS is a reread)
Tumblr media
next up are books that will be read in chunks. the one on horror films is a book my bf had to read for an old film studies class, but it's something that peaks my interest. Tiny Tales are short stories from people's lives, and Books and Libraries is a collection of poems about the love of books <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
more books that are new to me! the top ones on the left are blind date books I got in 2021 but I've been saving them for some reason, so I think this is a great year to pull them out! most of the books on the right were gifts over the last year or so and I'm very excited to get to those :))
Tumblr media
lastly are my planned rereads if I have time. it's been so long since I've read Caraval, so maybe this will spark a series reread, and I NEED to read the Priory again because it's such a phenomenal book, I think about it all the time, and I'm always in the mood for dragons and high fantasy 🐉⚔️

its is such a juicy and scrumptious juxtaposition of how violence is treated in the Catenan Republic and within its culture -where violence is aestheticised, muted, infantilised in the censorship of its searing pain and grotesqueness- and Vis’ unfiltered relationship with it.
In the first scene the inherent violence of the republic -that which is required to make it function- is shown through the sapper. Ulsicor is horrified because in the Republic violence is distant. It’s a theory of function. In the arena, the prisoners are yanked from view before you can watch them die. In their sword-fighting, your armour is separate from you. The sword a toy you can flail without repercussion. The people you drain the life from to support your own are stowed away in darkness.
To Vis, there is no violence without intimacy. In the loss of his family, in the loss of his home, in the loss of his culture, in his fights in Lenten, in the denial of ceding, in the bowels of the Anguis attack, in the fight against Ianix.
It is so so so good how Islington constantly confronts these relationships. Will not let you forget the sheer horror of it. Because Vis cannot forget the sheer horror of it. Even when whisked to the heart of the republic, where you are most protected from violence’s viscera. No matter the name or the status loaned to him. for Vis, there is no violence without intimacy. Violence is heavy, violence has weight. Violence means something.
To the conqueror violence means nothing. Its a tool they wield without candor. It is cold, it is distant, it is cruel. To the conquered, violence means everything. There is no distance, no numbing, no escape from its devastation. It knows you mother, father, sister, brother, friend, acquaintance, stranger, and you. Violence is survival. Violence is death. It is the only constant. An unwanted lifelong companion.

Wilder Girls Ch. 4
📚📖 I was able to get done with Ch. 4 today.
Below are my thoughts and summarization of the chapter.
**
**
***Spoilers ahead, If you don't want spoilers, please quit reading.***
**
**
Ch. 4
Once outside the fence, the only way to open it is with the big cast iron key around Welch's neck. What if she were to get lost or something. How would the girls get back in?
On the island is a flower called The Raxter Irises. It's petals also darken at the tip when picked. Even before the Tox. Could there be something on this island that caused the Tox? Again, is the main land even infected? Are they being lied to? Or am I just reading into things?
While they're out, Hetty mentions the shakes of the earth again. She mentioned on the roof in ch. 1 or 2. They do end up running into a black bear while out. I don't know if he would cause the earth to shake like she describes or could feel from the roof.
On her first Boat Shift, Hetty hears the boat before she sees it. Thre is only gray past a certain part of the ocean. Then, all of a sudden, out of the gray comes the boat. Once close, they use a crane to drop the pallets on the boat deck (forgot that they actually called it. The deck protruded out to the ocean. For boats to dock, and let people off.)
Once the boat gives the all clear; they don't want any interaction between the boat and island, they can grab what they dropped off.
Hetty sees on the pallet that there is far more stuff than the 6 bags they usually bring back. Hetty is excited until she learns, this is how much they always get. Enough to feed everyone for a week. Welch says some of it isn't good. It has pesticides that aren't good for the girl's already compromised systems. Is Welch lying? Is the food really good?
Hetty seems to hesitate as if she wants to say something, and Welch says she needs to keep the pallets to herself. If not, Welch threatens to take care of things as she reaches for her revolver, saying if you can't keep a secret. Why would Welch kill a student over this? Obviously, something is wrong here. Why really can't they use the food? Is Welch going crazy? We find out that Welch also hasn't told the headmistress about the extra food as well.
The food they don't use, they throw over the cliff. Welch says this is because if the Navy saw they left anything, they wouldn't bring as much the next time. It's such a waste. They only use original sealing and sealed food. Nothing that has been opened and put in another package. Is Welch paranoid, or is there really a good reason for this?
On the way back from the dock, they hear something and split up. Welch and Hetty come across a bobcat. Hetty says they used to be small and scare off easily. Now, this one's shoulders are up to her waist.
The bobcat has the Tox. "Dried blood crusting where its skin has fallen away in patches. Sores bubbling along the inside of its front legs. Bile stained the white fur on its neck." pg 74. So the Tox affects animals too.
While Hetty is running from the bobcat, she finds a place to hide. As she goes to make a spot to sit on. She finds a cooler in the ground covered by foliage. Thinking it's old as it's covered in grime and looks like it's been there a while. But when she opens it, she finds it clean. Inside is a bag closed with red tape. Inside the bag is a vial of blood, labeled "Potential Rax009" in a handwriting she almost knows. Did Byatt take it there? that'd be too easy to see coming. Are people being experimented on? Used for a cure? Again, is the mainland really infected? Could Raxter be a test site?
Once back inside, Hetty seems to be tired, so the headmistress tells her to go lay down. I wonder if the headmistress suspects something up. She seems to be there when Boat Shift comes back. She tells Hetty to go to sleep, and Byatt takes her.

Look at the cover art though~ I Love Junji Ito, his art is ✨stunning✨ and for my fellow neurodivergent folk out there; all the colors make my brain go brrr <3
