Highlights from the stream:
Here are the anecdotes shared during the epic draw-fest. Nearly all of them have been shared elsewhere at least once, but the new ones for me were about Greg Universe's orientation and the prototypical name for what Steven and Pearl's Fusion was going to be.
Rebecca Sugar loved Peridot's floating fingers and wanted to do all kinds of fun things with them before they would be gone forever. That's why we see her making arrows with them and biting them nervously in the episode right before she loses them.
When selecting clips for promotional use, they tried to be super careful about not picking anything that would show Peridot's real hands before the reveal had been aired. They didn't want a promo to accidentally ruin that surprise.
Tumblr media
While doing the show they had an "eye theory" where the three main Gems would always have a different number of eyes showing. Pearl had both her eyes visible; Amethyst usually had one covered; and Garnet had either no eyes showing or three eyes showing.
With Rebecca and Ian's decision to get married and the characters Ruby and Sapphire being based on them, they figured well, of course now they have to get married too. (Though Rebecca and Ian got to do so AFTER their characters did!)
Tumblr media
One of Rebecca's "post-Future theories" is that Steven gets a Gibson Hummingbird guitar.
Cookie Cat was originally based off of Cookie Puss, a very strange Carvell ice cream cake. It had a complicated backstory, which was appropriate for working with their own characters' complicated backstory. The branding and packaging of the Cookie Cat is important within the show.
Tumblr media
Jeff Liu composed the Cookie Cat theme on a Game Boy and pitched it.
Rebecca has a "theory" regarding how Steven and Connie's faces kind of "fit together" with Connie's face sticking out at the top and Steven's face sticking out at the bottom.
Rebecca used to do a lot of fan comics, and learned a lot about storytelling while practicing with others' worlds and characters. They love when people make things based on these characters.
Tumblr media
The original appearance of Rainbow Quartz was inspired by a music video from the Cars that Rebecca loved when they were younger. The Cars are referenced a lot throughout the show because their videos were a huge inspiration to Rebecca.
Lapis is very much based on a character from one of Rebecca's comics from the art school days.
Everybody on the Crew had different ideas of how Steven's head connected to his body and how his hair worked; Rebecca felt that they learned from everyone's various ideas.
If you've heard that Rebecca was against Finn being in a relationship while working on Adventure Time, that is not true. Rebecca worked on lots of the Flame Princess episodes. Finn and Flame Princess were still together when Rebecca left the show (last episode "Simon and Marcy").
Tumblr media
Greg Universe's sexuality was never explicitly stated on the show, but Rebecca thinks of him as sexually fluid. Regarding him as bisexual is also completely valid--and appreciated by Rebecca as a bisexual creator who puts lots of their own personal traits into characters and feels that bisexual characters are pretty rare. Greg's gender on the show is pretty solidly established as male, so Ian says he is probably not gender fluid, but Rebecca is fine with alternate headcanons about that too.
Some of the earliest concept art from "Mr. Greg" was everybody in suits. Getting everyone in a suit was a primary agenda.
Everyone also wanted Connie to have a Space Camp outfit in the earliest concepts for her design in the movie.
Rebecca used to love doing signings while doing the show because it was like a chance to come up for air and go back to work energized by knowing how many people were touched by the show.
Rebecca Sugar wanted Pink Diamond to feel a bit influenced/inspired, design-wise, by the work of Iwao Takamoto. Rebecca loved his work in the Hanna-Barbera Alice in Wonderland and on Sleeping Beauty.
Tumblr media
Rebecca drew the rough of the poster's art and Danny Hynes did the colors. Rebecca loves that they got to do this poster because they didn't get to do the final Comic Con with any art depicting Future or beyond (the finale of Future coincided with the emergence of Covid, so everything was closed down), so this is their way of "going rogue" and doing it!
An early prototype of a Steven/Pearl Fusion was called Coral. Rebecca said maybe they could share some drawings of this Fusion sometime. Rebecca shared this factoid with the viewers while drawing Rainbow Quartz 2.0, and mentioned that Ian boarded the scenes including their introduction.
Rebecca would often draw Garnet with a huge smile on her face whenever Garnet was the requested character--even before Garnet had made an expression like that on any aired episode. They had to be careful not to drop any Garnet lore before viewers knew what her center was about. For the short period before "Alone Together" had aired that they were doing conventions, some people were getting mysteriously grinning Garnets and not being familiar with that expression, but once the episodes aired, they understood for sure.
Tumblr media
Shelby Rabara, Peridot's voice actor, is a professional dancer, and she choreographed the tap-dancing in "Mr. Greg" as well as provided the foot-taps that you actually hear in the show during the dancing.
Rebecca thinks of art and writing as just two different ways of expressing what you mean--they're not exactly as different from each other as most people think.
Everyone on the Crew was so excited about Steven's neck as an older teen. Mainly because figuring out how Steven's head joins to his body was an issue in original SU.
Unfortunately, while it was also kinda nice to see so many people enjoying Rebecca's drawings and commentary, there was a lot of rudeness and obnoxiousness in the chat. I know, I know, it's expected; I too live on the internet. But I'm disappointed to say the chat was full of people demanding Black Diamond, or repeating their own name and what character they want every 3 seconds (like, literally, pasting it over and over again for a long period of time), or harassing them about "weird Ed Edd and Eddy art," or spamming "REBECCA WHAT WAS IN THE CHEST," or wanting constantly for them to say hi to them personally, or repeatedly asking if Rebecca has read Homestuck. Or even writing snotty things like "maybe you should stop drawing and get up and give us a new season." Holy shit. can u not
(I didn't want to get a live-signed one, but I did get one of these to be sketched later! Mine is supposed to get Lion on it. I love Rebecca and the SU crew for bringing us new art and fun discussions in 2024.)

an overlooked part of the “why won’t you just let me do this for you, rose,” scene.
notice the lines before she accidentally calls steven rose:
pearl: you shouldn’t be anywhere near the fight! you’re too important!
steven: i am not!
pearl: yes, you are.
steven: no!
pearl: why won’t you just let me do this for you, rose?!
rebecca sugar said this about rose in the book end of an era:
“Rose is her own worst enemy — literally, she fought herself. The way she felt about herself caused so much pain for everybody around her, especially the people who loved her and the people she wanted to love. One thing I find really interesting is that the way she idolized everyone around her was very sincere. She thought everyone around her was so much better than she was.”
this says so much about pearl, and about pearl’s relationship with rose.
she says the name rose after steven tells her that he is “not important.”
often, coming off as being very attached was pearl worrying about her and wanting to take care of her; there’s so much more depth than simply seeing her as this brilliant strong leader.
people remember that pearl knew rose as a diamond, but it’s easy to overlook the fact that she witnessed a lot of the things pink went through. she saw how blue and yellow treated her… and she also knew how white treated her. we all heard the things white diamond said about pink in change your mind. we all know how terrified pearl was when steven was left in a room alone with white for five minutes.
people remember that pearl kept a lot of rose’s secrets, but it’s easy to overlook the fact that keeping so many of her dark secrets and having such a close connection in general likely involved rose dropping facade and telling pearl about her dark thoughts when she was sad.
rose was the first gem that pearl fused with, and vice-versa, which was very special as a diamond and pearl. fusion is about trusting an individual completely. this was before they lived together for over 5,000 years.
when we watch pearl, even in the early seasons of steven universe, she is protective of steven, extremely intelligent, nurturing, and strong. a major part of her character is that she takes care of everyone around her. and this is while she’s grieving.
pearl’s love for rose was never just about devotion to a leader. she also loved rose as… a person, really.
she knew the most about rose and she loved all of her, even the parts that rose could not stand. she loved versions of rose that no one else knew about; she loved every single aspect of her.
people like to call her obsessive, heck, even white did, but their love is so often misunderstood because of their former roles in a traumatizing environment that they were both trying to escape from.
pearl’s love for rose went far beyond loyalty and admiration for a leader.
she wanted to protect rose from the war. but she wanted to protect rose from her own mind, too.

The way Simon describes his time as the Ice King reminds me of how I describe my drug addiction. His song, the one that Rebecca Sugar sings with her ukele plucking the chords of my heart strings, talks about learning how to survive without the madness/sadness. Simon uses that show called Cheers to remind himself of what was once familiar. It's how he copes in a world not meant for him, but for the Ice King. One thing that I know about Cheers is a song that goes "I want to go where everybody knows my name". He sung this to himself when he put the crown on to protect himself and Marcy from the fallout after the mushroom war.
He needed Ice King to survive hard times. It's a little difficult for me to describe myself at this point, but when I was using I would play songs that made me feel happy. I would be transported. It's like... These two things combined made me feel a sense of safety with losing parts of myself as I fell away in the void that ate me slowly. I was alone. I was struggling. The drugs kept me alive just as Ice King kept Simon and Marceline alive.

hii!!!! can i request karaoke hcs for the brothers? (could u also add what song u think they'd sing lol) ty very much <333
Karaoke Headcanons
Lucifer
Believe it or not, Lucifer actually enjoys doing karaoke, especially with his brothers. Not that he would ever admit it, though.
It will take a lot of convincing to get him to do it since he has an image to maintain.
He will never laugh at the person singing no matter how bad they might sound.
Lucifer actually becomes irritated when people laugh at someone's singing abilities. It's fine if someone is purposefully trying to sound bad. But if someone is genuinely trying their best, he will shoot whoever is laughing a nasty glare
Lucifer will most likely sing songs by either Kiss, Queen or Ghost.
Depending on the situation, the songs Lucifer sings might change. Let's say he, for instance, was alone with MC
Songs Lucifer might sing
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen (obviously)
Square Hammer - Ghost
Cirice - Ghost
When alone with MC, tired, or drunk
Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy - Queen
Somebody to Love - Queen
I Was Made for Lovin' You - Kiss
Dance Macabre - Ghost
Are You Satisfied? - MARINA
Mammon
He loves karaoke and has a blast every time.
It's most likely him or Asmodeus, who suggested doing karaoke in the first place.
Super supportive and cheers for whoever is singing.
If someone is scared of singing, Mammon will offer to sing with them so they don't have to do it alone.
Mammon doesn't stick to a particular genre of songs. He does like upbeat songs but is not against singing a slow ballad.
Sometimes, he let his brothers pick what song to sing to mix things up.
Songs Mammon might sing
On Melancholy Hill - Gorillaz
I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor
Gasolina - Daddy Yankee
Runaway Baby - Bruno Mars
Just Dance Lady - Gaga
If you are extremely lucky, you might hear Mammon sing Can You Feel the Love Tonight.
Leviathan
He loves karaoke, but doing it in front of others is scary.
It takes a lot of convincing and encouragement to get him to sing karaoke with others.
Leviathan prefers to have at least 4 or 5 people sing before it's his turn. He needs tge time to prepare himself.
Once he has sung a song or 2, he will become confident, and you will have to force the mic out of his hands.
Anime songs, game fan songs and vocaloid need I say more.
Songs Leviathan might sing
Luka Luka☆ Nightfever - Samfree
the WORLD - Nightmare
Unravel - TK from Ling tosite sigure
World Is Mine - Ryo (supercell)
It's Been So Long - The Living Tombstone
He will absolutely pour his soul out to Unknown Mother Goose by Wowaka. He puts his entire heart into singing that song
Satan
He doesn't hold any particular opinion on karaoke. If asked he will join, but it's not something he would suggest himself.
Usually reads until it's his turn to sing.
Sings a lot of different types of songs. Another one who doesn't stick to a particular genre.
He will definitely be the one who is most likely to sing any form of metal.
Also, most likely to sing any songs involving cats
Songs Satan might sing
Spillways - Ghost
Mein Teil - Rammstein
Everybody Wants to Be a Cat - Aristocats
Sonne - Rammstein
Love Like You - Rebecca Sugar
Papaoutai - Stromae. Satan actually gets a bit emotional when he sings this one.
Asmodeus
Without a doubt, the biggest fan of karaoke amongst the brothers.
He is the reason why there is at least one karaoke night per month.
Asmodeus cheers on everyone who sings.
Now Asmodeus doesn't just sing he preforms. He will give you a whole show when his turn comes.
He likes upbeat dance music, but he is not against trying other genres. He will do an amazing job regardless of what song he sings
Like Lucifer, the songs he sings might depend on the situation and how he is feeling.
Songs Asmodeus might sing
S&M - Rihanna
Toxic - Britney Spears
Applaus - Lady Gaga
Bubblegum Bitch - MARINA
Mary on a Cross - Ghost
When sad, tired or drunk
Washing Machine Heart - Mitski
Gilded Lily - Cults
Hermit the Frog - MARINA
First Love/Late Spring - Mitski
Beelzebub
Another one who doesn't have a particular opinion on karaoke.
He does like it since it brings his brothers together and there tends to be lots of snacks to munch on.
He is very supportive and always encourages people to do their best.
Beelzebub will sing just about anything he doesn't have a preference and usually lets his brothers pick.
When Beelzebub picks songs himself, they tend to hit people right in the heart
Songs Beelzebub might sing
Sweater Weather - The Neighbourhood
Feel Invincible - Skillit
Gimme Chocolate!! - BABYMETAL
Fix you - Coldplay
A Sky Full of Stars - Coldplay
Home - Cavetown
Fourth of July - Sufjan Stevens. This one tends to make his brothers shed a few tears.
Belphegor
Most of the time he joins because he is too tired to move away.
Doesn't have anything against karaoke it's just not his favourite thing.
Falls asleep most of the time and someone have to shake him awake even it is his turn
Belphegor does, however, try his best when either Beelzebub or MC are singing l.
Tends to pick calm songs or songs that doesn't require a lot of work.
Does join Satan from time to timecwhen he sings more aggressive songs
Songs Belphegor might sing
Rises the Moon - Liana Flores
Bad End Theatre True End ver. - NomnomNami
Aunnobeats - Maigo Hanyuu
Little Dark Age - MGMT
This Is Love - Air Traffic Controllers
Runaway - ARORA. It sounds absolutely amazing when he sings this song 10/10.

Look I normally try to stay out of the Viv drama, but it has a habit of finding me. I generally ignore it but the whole ‘comparing my work to fan fic makes you homophobic’ thing is just too batshit to ignore. I can’t fathom being that deluded.
Am I taking this a bit personally? A bit. But that’s because writing is my wheelhouse and it galls me to see someone who claims to be a professional make such a total mockery of said profession.
Not that I would consider her a professional. Having lots of money to throw around does not a professional make.
Let me tell you something I tell everybody who wants to be a writer. Writing isn’t an innate skill, it’s a craft that you need to hone. If people criticize your work, then the sane thing to do is take a step back and reevaluate. Differentiate between good and bad faith criticism and you know…be a fucking adult about it. Do the work to improve instead of throwing a public tantrum any time someone points out something they dislike.
Just…ugh. This whole thing gets more embarrassing by the day.
This. No one likes criticism, but if everyone's saying your story reads like a fanfic, you can either take it to heart and try to make adjustments to your story or ignore it. What you shouldn't do is get on twitter and throw a white-hot hissy fit about how fanfiction is good and awesome and queer so anyone who criticizes Helluva Boss is homophobic.
Can you imagine Alex Hirsch or Rebecca Sugar behaving this way? They aren't, and it's not because they've never encountered takes about their work that pissed them off.

If one of your major defenses of Chuck Lorre’s and Adam Sandler’s work is that they get too much hate due to antisemitism and their critics being fascists. Why the fuck do you not hold this principle consistently for people like Rebecca Sugar as well? I just don’t get it at all. The main focus you try to bring when discusses these two straight Jewish men are always that their work is being attacked by antisemites/the far right and people should take that into account when looking at their work. But when it comes to Rebecca Sugar, a bisexual Jewish woman, your complete silence about any antisemitism potentially fueling people’s extreme hatred of both her and her work is just absolutely fucking deafening. Not to mention that, unlike both Sandler and Lorre, she ALSO has to deal with frequent both biphobic and misogynistic attacks, on TOP of antisemitism. Do you REALLY think the fact that you are also told by everybody around you to hate her/her shows is just for totally only normal reasons as well?? Because if you value the consistency of your beliefs to any fucking degree at all I don’t think that you could.
Oh hey guys check it out-the old town bicycle, Sitcom Anon has come home ONCE AGAIN. You done fucking other whores yet, you bitch?
Anyway I don’t talk about Rebecca Sugar ever, they’re non-binary (she/they I believe) as well so write that down, and I’m allowed to hold the opinions of Steven Universe I do (because let’s be real that’s the only thing of hers I’ve heard dunked on in any capacity) because I watched every episode and don’t have the critical thinking skills of an unsalted peanut.

Now if you want quality art here’s some for ya! Get er done!

Season 15 Posters
Back during Tumblr's heyday, storyboard artists from shows like "Adventure Time" and "Regular Show" used to create posters for their episodes. I believe Rebecca Sugar and Adam Muto were the first to do this for their AT episode, "It Came From the Nightosphere," and the reaction was so positive, everybody followed suit.
The practice has died down a little bit but it's something I always wanted to do and when my first episodes of "American Dad" started airing, I finally found my opportunity.
In Season 15 I boarded three episodes, "Hot Scoomp," "Comb Over: A Hair Piece," and "Crystal Clear." For reasons I can't remember I didn't do one for "Comb Over," but episodes one and three were my first cracks at posters. Compared to what I've been doing now, these posters are pretty simple but I still think they're kind of fun and charming. And more importantly, they highlight the board team for the episode and give us a small moment to take a bow for a job well done.

May I ask, for the Betty Boop character free copyright, what versions of hers we can use? like if you don't mind be a little more specific for my dumbass self understands
Only if you don't mind ofc!
Wow, I never made a follow up clarifying the Betty Boop situation. So uh... the situation is complicated.
So like... to play things safe... Betty Boop actually *unambiguously* enters the public domain in 2 years. Which is to say the original version of Betty Boop as depicted in Dizzy Dishes will be free to use.
Tumblr media
That said, I'm calling bull. There's dozens of variants of Betty Boop who don't look like the modern incarnation who have fallen into the public domain, and at times, it feels like there's more Betty Boop stuff in the domain than outside of it.
On top of that, the rights to Betty Boop are a complicated mess. From the wikipedia page:
Tumblr media
Global Icons, btw, is the same company that also owns the rights to the images of serveral real life celebrities, including Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley... and like... that really sucks.
I'm not a legal expert by any means, but I think this all reads a bit familiar. Disney continues to claim ownership of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, even though that's a lie. The same can be said for DC and any of the Fawcett Comic characters.
What I can tell you is that there's definitely a single recognizable variant of Betty Boop who has fallen into the public domain, with one rather extreme deviation from most other versions of the character.
Tumblr media
Betty Boop was a redhead for exactly one cartoon, and nobody talks about that. Poor Cinderella is a solid Betty Boop short, and it's free for anybody to use. And this version of Betty, at least to me, reads as a different incarnation of Betty not commonly used in modern merchandise.
Use her. Call her Cindy or just remove the "Boop" from her name. Put her next to her unambiguously Public Domain friends Bimbo and Koko the Clown. Have her meet Steamboat Willie Mickey and Minnie. Put her into the spiritual successor to Epic Mickey that everybody wants but nobody seems to know how to make.
But allow me to back up for a second.
Right now, as we speak, big AI companies are scraping the art of millions of artists without pay. Original stories aren't being picked up by big networks... everybody wants big IP and indie projects aren't allowed a spotlight. And none of this is going to change anytime soon.
Now more than ever, we are morally obligated to steal art. Not just pirate it. Steal it. Bend it to our whims. Make our own version. Take advantage of parody law and fair use and produce our own frankensteinian creations.
In the future, copyright should belong to the artist, not a corporation. Showrunners who pitch cartoons should own the cartoons they produce; there's no reason Rebecca Sugar and Dana Terrace should be denied royalties for the cartoons they came up with. And in the event of an artists death, the copyright for a character should only by the artists estate for a short amount of time.
I'm sick of Disney. I'm sick of the Marvin Gaye Estate. I'm sick of Global Icons. If they're gonna take advantage of our hard work as artists, then we're morally obligated to take advantage of their IP.

I'm a Christian who just finished watching Steven Universe for the first time, and I think it's interesting to discuss the Christian perspective on the show, because I think it's very interesting how the ideas can be very antithethical to the Christian worldview one minute, but the next have ideas that as a Christian, I can get behind.
I think Change Your Mind is a good example--obviously there's stuff in there that you pointed out is anti-Christian--the idea that 'you're perfect as you are, and you shouldn't feel any pressure to change', the idea that self-love is the only love you need, the idea that a God who demands perfection is cruel and distant and everything else you mentioned, but in the same stroke, I think that the episode has a pretty accurately Christian view of redemption. A lot of shows try to push the idea that certain sins you can redeem yourself of, and after you've done xyz things to prove that you've really changed, then you're redeemed. Steven Universe says that it doesn't matter how far down the path of evil you were--you're never totally irredeemable, and you don't need to have already proven yourself to have changed before you can say you've changed. Steven accepts White Diamond's redemption as soon as she's a) realised her wrongdoing and b) chooses to accept his offer of forgiveness, and then she's shown, afterwards to be acting out of a changed heart. Although perhaps it was rushed, I think it's a redemption arc that most accurately matches the Biblical idea of how redemption works--that it isn't something earned.
There's quite a bit of other stuff in the show, that despite the show's primary principles being pretty anti-Christian, is oddly Christian in value. Like the way the Cluster was handled was pretty reminiscent of a pro-life stance--the Cluster was going to experience a far lower quality of life, and was an imminent danger to everyone else, and Steven still chose to save it, chose instead of destroying it (which would have been convenient for them and 'putting it out of it's misery') to try and give it the best quality of life possible. Just interesting to think about
I hear what you're saying, and it is good to look for the good as well as the bad when you finish enjoying watching something. But it's important to take the thing as a whole, as it was intended, and remember the context.
White Diamond might be redeemed at the end. But redeemed from what? From the evil of trying to control what everybody does, as their creator. Plus, there's the added awfulness of the fact that she's the Creator, she is the God-type-character, and she's in the wrong at all.
And you have to also remember, as a Christian, something that C.S. Lewis points out in The Last Battle: "By mixing a little truth with it they had made their lie far stronger."
Where'd Rebecca Sugar get the idea of redemption? The idea that you can't earn it? In fact, if it's just okay for Pink Diamond to believe what she wants to believe (this philosophy that people can change and choose who they are) because people should be allowed to believe whatever they want and live their truth--
--then why couldn't White Diamond keep loving her truth? Where did this idea of good vs evil, and evil needing to be redeemed, even come from? Not Rebecca Sugar.
God invented and executed real redemption. But it was redemption from hatred of God and brokenness to the love of God that you're made for and wholeness. Whereas, White Diamond is "redeemed" from controlling people toward perfection to letting people be imperfect if they want to be--and being imperfect, herself.
It's fine to acknowledge that there is an idea of redemption in the story, but be careful to follow the thought all the way through--what's the "evil" she's being redeemed out of, and what is the "good" she's being redeemed into?
