The Black Phantom started out as a bull whip-wielding bank-robbing female bad ass. With her partner Beast, she was a terror of the frontier and was not above lethal violence in the prosecution of her crimes or in getting rid of nosy or inconvenient snoopers who attempt to foil her plans. The Robin Hood-like Red Mask (the heroic alter ego of Tim Holt) fell into that category and the Phantom and the hero frequently found themselves in conflict. As time went on, the Phantom’s relationship with Red Mask developed into sexual attraction and the former outlaw began to fight on the side of good as the the Mask’s sometime partner and helper, and even doing a stint as a deputy sheriff. She retained an antipathy towards her old nemesis Tim Holt, however, not realising the two men were one and the same. In the page shown here, the Black Phantom is definitely in “sidekick” territory, although it is her intervention that saves the day and enables the Mask to capture the feared Red Ace Gang.

Black Phantom, for all her blonde cascading locks, tight black clothes and interesting back story, is something of a two dimensional character. Even her mask and ‘mistress of disguise’ persona can lead readers guessing as to her real personality.

In the early 1950s, Black Phantom appeared in Red Mask comics, Tim Holt and Best of the West, sometimes in her own stories. She also occasionally features in AC Comics’ reboot/ reprint celebration of the comic book heroine, FemForce. The featured page above is from Red Mask #42 (June/July 1954). The story is called Powdersmoke Hero! and it was written and illustrated by Frank Bolle.

Pulptober 3rd: Rainbow of Justice - Red Mask

A deeper cut and a delicate one today. Red Range absolutely counts as a pulp story, but I cannot detail exactly why without ruining a fantastic reveal in the story (if you've read it you know exactly what I'm talking about and hopefully agree with me). Avoiding spoilers as best I can, Red Mask is a vigilante fighting the KKK in Reconstruction-era Texas, wisely keeping his exact identity secret with the mask that gives him his name. Red Range is brilliant, if you like your spaghetti westerns with plenty of meat (to borrow a phrase from Deadlands). Art by Sam Glanzman

Following the Golden Oni Lloyd is a Oni Kai with the mask of vengeance as the 'face'.

I'm not so happy with this one as the Lloyd oni. The mask of vengeance make the user a master swordsman so oni Kai is a blade-dancer? I'm not sure why that idea is stuck in my head...
