Most peoples’ noses are working overtime. If you have a normal sense of smell, an hour’s worth of breathing comes with hundreds of “exploratory sniffs,” according to new research. These subtle, unconscious inhalation peaks–along with other small signatures–amount to a respiratory pattern that significantly differs from that of people born without a sense of smell.  In other words: Your ability to smell dictates the way you breathe, per the study published October 22 in the journal Nature Communications. Respiratory differences between smellers and non-smellers could have important implications for both physical and mental health, suggest the authors, all scientists within the Olfaction Research Group at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot.

is any other disabled person tired of 'throw a medication at it' approaches that a lot of doctors seem to have?

In Feburary I had an appointment with an allergist; I was told to not take any antihistimines for 7 days before this appointment because they would mess with allergy testing. Prior to that, I've been having hives every day for a week.

I stopped the antihistimines, The hives got so bad that I had to go to urgent care because I could not walk. They gave me enough steriods to last until the allergist appointment.

The allergist appointment comes... They refuse to do any allergy testing. They looked for markers of inflamation in my blood, and told me to follow up in a month after perscribing an antihistimine to take daily.

They told me because the hives weren't chronic [lasting over 6 months], and weren't affecting my respitory system, they were not concerned with allergy testing and were only focused on symptom management.

The first antihistimine they perscribed made my throat start to swell shut; so we moved on. I now take 2 capsules of 180mg of Allegra, once in the morning and once at night.

I still have hives, every day.

I informed my doctor. They added 40mg of famotidine.

I still have hives, every day. They just changed spots.

I still dont know what's causing it. It's been weeks of this. I'm exhausted.

They refuse to do any testing.

How to proceed?

One of the arguments often levelled against proponents of keeping cats indoors is that it deprives them of their natural behaviours - hunting being one of them.

It is a legitimate concern, even if it is not quite a strong enough argument to allow one's cats roam free and decimate the local native wildlife to its heart's content.

Cats are intelligent, energetic animals who need both quantity and variety of stimulus. As a responsible pet owner, it is your job to provide plenty of different ways for your cat to play and scratch and climb and everything else that makes a happy cat.

But there is a limit to what puzzle feeders and feathers on elastic can do in the face of a delightful little nightmare scurrying around the floorboards, or an impling fluttering in the corner of the ceiling. The fact is, cats are hard-wired to hunt. It's not that they want to - it's that they can't help themselves.

Rather than try to control your cat's hunting instinct, you would be better off reducing its prey. Warding your home against infernal occupation and visiting oneiroi should help reduce the rate of these incidents, even if you can't prevent them altogether.

Cleansing your house with cedar, rosemary, thyme or sage smoke on a regular basis will help keep your home free from these other-planar visitors. Alternatively - or additionally - you might place charm bags of anise seeds, mullein leaves, or dried rosemary around the house.

Some practitioners recommend growing hyacinth in the home to protect from nightmares. Be aware that hyacinth is toxic to cats when ingested, however, and should only be considered if you're quite sure you can keep your feline friend safe.

Speaking of which, if you do decide to perform a smoke cleanse, make sure to keep the cat in another room while you do and let the smoke dissipate fully before allowing it to enter again.

As well as having a more delicate respitory system, if the smoke were to catch in your cats fur, it would be at risk of ingesting toxic particle when it next groomed itself.

Finally, as always, please check with your GP before using thaumaturgically reactive materials, especially if you've never used these materials before.

Samaki Kaiju is a member of the aquatic Hyynnan Species from the planet Marinia. He escaped his planet to enter space academy and became a Biomedical and Mechanical Engineer. After a disastrous end to his graduation, he leave the system on a ship he built to travel the galaxy with his boyfriend.

He's bioluminecent in dark water! He is only capable of breathing water due to his gills and respitory system, so he has to wear a stupid diving suit 99% of the time, only interrupted by him occasionally being able to wrap a wet towel around his gills and spending a few minutes absorbing the water that way.

His boyfriend, Maks, is a medic that lives on the ship with him, and Sam is the one that built his Bionic arm.

All in all, Sam is a big awkward nerd who is more interested in digging through scrap yards and tinkering with the ship than talking to anyone else, he leaves that to Maks. He's Neurotic, writes on the walls in dry erase marker, and listens to 1970s Earth Music on the ancient human stereo that he found and attached to the ship.

Tinfoil theory: Edith & Harold are really older Louise & Rudy that traveled back in time!

Okay, no. This is of course not true. There's really no evidence for this (and what we know of Edith's backstory contridicts this) but when I look at them I can't help but think how similar they are.

Rudy & Harold have the same long ears and talk in hoarse voices that makes you think they may have issues with their respitory systems. Rudy likes hats and his favorite colour is green. Harold wears a hat and a green shirt.

While Louise dosen't chare many characteristics with present Edith she does share many with Edith as a child as I pointed out in a previous blog.

I'm just saying; if anyone asked me what Louise and Rudy would look like 70 years from now I'll probably just show them a picture of the Cranwinkles.

Also their dynamic is somewhat similar with Louise & Edith being more dominant and Rudy & Harold being more submisive.

Again, I don't think this theory is true but its just fun to imagine.

Maybe it can be the premise for a fanfic or a comic book story.

I have to force myself to practice digital art, and the best way to do that is by drawing OCs. So this is one I made while reading far too many All Might/reader fics. She's more a thought excercise about mutated physiology than anything. More info under the cut.

Meet Nagisa Williams, aka Ultrasound. Her quirk is "Frequency", which allows her to emit both infra and ultrasonic frequencies from the "vents" on her cheeks (actually modified vocal chords) that can be used to speed up healing/ reduce pain, or inflict dissorientation, nausea/vomiting/diarrhea, concussions or even death (though the physical strain of using her quirk with that level of intensity can result in injury or death for her as well). She stays away from the that side of her quirk and is instead a licsensed medical hero.

Her respitory system is highly mutated, most likely due to the high concentration of avian-type heteromorphs on her father's side of the family. On top of the additional tracheas, vocal chords and vocal pouch that are visible as external organs, she possesses several air sacs in addition to her lungs, allowing for flow-through breathing (she lacks a diaphragm as a result) and both humeri bones are pnuematic, connected to her lungs.

This design was her about 20 years before MHA would start proper, when she was 30 and just moved to Japan after getting her licsense in the name of getting field experience without needing to join the military (you can't tell me the advent of quirks didn't make the US more militaristic).

The eyebleeding orange isn't something she chose for herself. The rescue agency she worked for mandated that its heroes need to be visible when out in the field, and given that most people didn't want to wear garish colors, it was agency policy that all support items/gear would be the company orange (the logo are also reflective). That's also why she wears her hair up- it's such a light/bright shade that it acts as a visibilty flare for both her team mates and any civilians.

I'd love to think of more members of her old agency (I imagine they're one of the biggest rescue agencies in Japan in the modern day, but 20 years ago there were only 6 or 7 members including Nagisa). But it's hard to think of interesting quirks that would not only be well suited for search and rescue work, but would be interesting to draw. You can't introduce me to a world where mutants with distinct physical appearances are commomplace and then expect me to care about boring, normal ass-looking humans. This is the perfect excuse to draw things that would be body horror in any other setting but are damn-near mundane in this one.

So, something that's always bothered me about Steven Universe is the anatomy of the gems.

At first I thought that they were just as they described in the show, physical holograms made of light. I figured that it was just compacted light in a humanoid form. But there are some key things that made me think differently:

1. They can feel pain

2. They can get sick

3. They can breath

4. They can eat

5. They can cry

So, I've been thinking. Instead of their form bring exactly how it looks when they're reforming, I think they have organ systems just like people do; albeit being made of compacted light instead of organic tissue.

Think about it - Amethyst got food poisoning after eating an expired burrito. If she didn't have an organ system with kidneys and a liver and an immune system, I'm pretty sure she wouldn't have felt that sick. Now, you may argue that Amethyst just shapeshifted herself a digestive system because she likes to eat, and that could be totally valid.

But hold on; if that's so, why would she go through the trouble of making herself the entire digestive track, instead of just a stomach and intestines? Why go through all the trouble of making everything else?

Here's another thing - Pearl doesn't eat, but I think it's confirmed that she drinks tea. That means she must have been digestive track as well. But since Pearl hates eating, why would she shapeshift herself one? Maybe because she didn't!

It's possible that gems are modeled after organic life forms, so they may automatically have organs like organics do. After all, someone had go have made White Diamond, and that someone could've been an organic species.

Another thing is gems clearly must have nerves, which is why they feel pain. And look at this:

Another thing is while they don't need to, they can breath. Which means they have a respitory system.

The only systems they seem to lack is a cardiovascular system, since they don't have hearts or blood, and the reproductive system, since it's confirmed that Rose had to shapeshift herself one to have Steven.

They also don't have brains, but their gem probably functions as it; being their sole life force. So it's probably the center of their nervous system. Evidence of this is that one White Diamond takes control of a gem's body, it always starts at their gem or gems and spreads from there somewhat in tendrils. Like she's taking over their bodies nerve by nerve.

And lastly, they can cry. It's simple - to cry, you need tear ducts. If gems didn't have organs, they wouldn't be able to cry. And we see many, many gems cry. Many gems that don't eat or drink. Blue Diamond didn't even know what food was, yet she can cry.

So, in conclusion, gems are pre-made with organ systems and you're not convincing me otherwise. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

you are actually the first person to ask this, but boy am i ready to answer it. i think about centaur anatomy so fucking much you would not believe.

disclaimer - i know nothing about biology and did no research past google images im just vibing here. i try to make things logical but am not really fussed about it being strictly viable.

so they are, in fact, double-lunged (or quad-lunged? 2 sets of 2, 4 total). they're both located and sized pretty much how you'd expect, one smaller pair in the upper torso (human half) and one larger in the lower torso/barrel (horse half)

the one thing these two pairs absolutely cannot do is alternate. one cannot be exhaling while the other inhales. but if a random fun fact i picked up from researching war horse puppetry is correct, horse lungs are three times larger than human lungs. so, while both sets inhale and exhale at the same time, most of the time the lower lungs will be expanding and contracting three times as fast as the upper ones to stay in sync.

so, what is the advantage of having that many lungs? well, the main function of the system is allowing effective verbal communication while on the move.

as someone without a spare set of lungs, you may have noticed that talking while running, or even just walking if youre particularly worn out, is a bit tricky. centaurs, at least how i write them, evolved to be constantly moving through large territories of foraging and hunting grounds while also making use of complex verbal communication, so they need a way around this issue.

most of the time, a centaur's vocal chords are vibrated soley by air exhaled by the upper lungs. when they speak, they are able to increase the speed of exhalation of the upper lungs relative to the lower to do so. this means they exchange less gass through the upper lungs, but the lower are unaffected. so if they need to communicate while on the move, they can essentially use the air in the upper lungs to speak while the lower go on circulating oxygen and carbon dioxide as normal, meaning it's harder for them to get out of breath. that's not to say they can hold full converstations at a gallop no problem, though. theres still limits.

they can, if they need to, use the lower lungs to vibrate the vocal chords too via opening a valve in the throat. this allows them to make much louder sounds, mostly for long-distance calls to herdmates. they're usually wordless noises with simple meanings, harder to misinterpret over distance.

they also have two hearts, in the regular heart places.

having two ensures that enough blood makes it around both the big ol legs and the big ol brain. the two systems are linked, otherwise the brain wouldn't be able to benefit from the double respitory system, which i dont think would end too well for the centaur

so thats the cardiovascular and respiratory system of a centaur, to my understanding. ill probably make similar posts on the rest in future i love speculative biology shit

In all fairness. The digestive system has a very clear 1-way eject button, and a reverse exit back up strategy. the respitory system does not.

SOO glad you asked me my dear friend YES.!! You have to get a minimum of two rats because they'll be hella depressed alone. They're honestly super easy to care for though, i clean my cage once a week and because their respitory system is sensitive you gotta wash their hammocks and bedding in vinegar since laundry soap will irritate them. Feed once a day, i think it's 3tbsp per rat but idr since i have dwarfs rn i feed less lol, and always have a fresh bowl and/or water bottle option on every level of the cage. They're easy to litter train, simply place a rock in the litter box and they will piss on it, as for poops just pick them up and put it in the litter box and they'll eventually get the hint that's where it goes. For food i feed a mix of adult rat lab blocks and a ratio of seeds, grains, veggies and protein.good treats are baby food, yogurt and fresh veggies. Rats are super smart they'll learn their names and u can teach em tricks (: and uhhh they need ideally an hour a day of free roam time outside the cage, in a secure and supervised area like a ratproofed bathroom or on your bed. These fuckers will chew everything, clothes, paper, even the paint off the walls and the baseboards. I once had a rat who chewed/dug a hole in the floor under the door so he could leave my bedroom at his leisure. I did not get my deposit back.

If you wondering why I reblogged that calicivirus post, it's because I have a vet appointment in 1.5 hours to take a cat there for help with it.

Generally, I have been given or have rescued cats and kittens that have something wrong with them. Either a genetic defect that eventually kills them--pour one out for my man Jerry--or one with calicivirus that sometimes kills the kittens because, as that post mentioned, their immune system isn't good enough to overcome it, and also sometimes nearly kills the adults because they Stop Eating when they can't Smell The Food and also Their Gums Hurt.

And when it gets to that latter situation, I've hit "throw the cat in the car and spend hundreds on vet care to make it not die" mode.

Because I have seen a person nearly kill their own cat that had an upper-respitory infection because they weren't trying to feed it when it clearly wasn't eating like it should and they thought their stupid probiotics worked like antibiotics.

I am not going to be that dumb. I have never been that dumb and I refuse to slip into that level of ignorance.

This isn’t exactly related but also for most ungulates (Hooved mammals) you CANNOT feed them like you would a human baby, in your arms with belly up. Due to their respitory system and other still-developing organs, they HAVE to eat standing, with their neck stretched. Like even if they’re kind of weak, you should lowkey try to keep it out of their reach.

That’s how they nurse in real life, reaching up and away from their torsos. It helps the milk go down the right pipes and such. Even if the baby is so weak it cannot stand up, you must feed it belly down and with a somewhat stretched neck and a chin tilted up.

One of my biggest nitpicks in fiction concerns the feeding of babies. Mothers dying during/shortly after childbirth or the baby being separated form the mother shortly after birth is pretty common in fiction. It is/was also common enough in real life, which is why I think a lot of writers/readers don't think too hard about this. however. Historically, the only reason the vast majority of babies survived being separated from their mother was because there was at least one other woman around to breastfeed them. Before modern formula, yes, people did use other substitutes, but they were rarely, if ever, nutritionally sufficient.

Newborns can't eat adult food. They can't really survive on animal milk. If your story takes place in a world before/without formula, a baby separated from its mother is going to either be nursed by someone else, or starve.

It doesn't have to be a huge plot point, but idk at least don't explicitly describe the situation as excluding the possibility of a wetnurse. "The father or the great grandmother or the neighbor man or the older sibling took and raised the baby completely alone in a cave for a year." Nope. That baby is dead I'm sorry. "The baby was kidnapped shortly after birth by a wizard and hidden away in a secret tower" um quick question was the wizard lactating? "The mother refused to see or touch her child after birth so the baby was left to the care of the ailing grandfather" the grandfather who made the necessary arrangements with women in the neighborhood, right? right? OR THAT GREAT OFFENDER "A newborn baby was left on the doorstep and they brought it in and took care of it no issues" What Are You Going to Feed That Baby. Hello?

Like. It's not impossible, but arrangements are going to have to be made. There are some logistics.

I've been reading so many readerxAll Might fanfics, but I rarely selfship so I ended up making an OC to insert into those fics... and then she took on a life of her own... and I gave her a son, and parents and friends, and now I just have a whole cast of mutants that's almost completely divorced from anything to do with MHA because I had an almost allergic reaction to season one and now I refuse to interact with the series outside of fanfics and tumblr posts.

This is how all my characters start out- messy-ass sketches trying to get their "vibe" down. Every polished painting you've seen from me began life looking like this (or worse). So here we have Nagisa Williams/Takanashi ("Takanashi" is her mother's maiden name that she uses when she's in Japan, because she learned from a young age that you gotta be careful about what you put on a form. They will throw your resumé out without even reading it), and her son Seimei. No, she isn't one of those absurdly youthful anime moms- I just wanted to draw her in her Pro-Hero prime, which was when she was about 30 (she had her son when she was 35, and would currently be in her 50s). They have the same mutation/quirk, which is producing ultra/infrasonic frequencies that can be used to relieve pain/speed up healing, or cause nausea/vomiting/bowel incontinence/panic attacks/cerebral hemmorhage/ect., amongst other things (it's based on that resonant frequency tweet).

I wanna do more sketches to better show off their actual proportions and respitory system (it's alot), as well as the 8-9 other characters that are connected to them, but like... that's soooo much art and I hate drawing so fucking much...
