I'm actually FASCINATED by the role of New York gangs in AC: Rogue. To me, a born-and-raised NYer, gangs are a recent development going back to the 1850s because frankly, that's as far as our oral histories usually trace; that's the earliest major wave of immigration. Most old New York families don't go further back.

The gangs weren't completely wiped out until the 90s, and by "wiped out," I mean they still exist, but the end result of government crackdown was that they no longer operate in the open the way they used to, and their methods of operation have changed. In the 1950s-80s, they extorted money via racketeering (what you see in movies when a gang member comes to a business and offers "protection" in exchange for money; reject it, and the member and his goons destroy your business or threaten your life) and had shootouts on the streets. Nowadays, it's more likely to be money laundering.

Needless to say, we can say with full confidence and a sense of black-and-white morality, that gangs are Bad, because of how much violence they encourage within the community.

BUT, there are certain things that aren't as black-and-white, because gangs usually exist to fill the needs of a society that the "legal" methods cannot meet. You feel powerless? You band together and intimidate other people, even if it becomes violent. Isn't that how Jacob formed the Rooks?

I want to sidebar about a great example of gangs filling unmet needs in what are shitty, harmful methods that would not be met at all otherwise: Human trafficking.

I'm not defending human trafficking by any means, but I would like to examine the conditions under which people are trafficked, their role in NYC, and the deeper implications in AC Rogue.

We know that smugglers are exploitative. The smugglers who lead North Koreans across the border into China and Mexicans into the United States demand huge sums of money from migrants (let's use "migrants" in this case since we're covering a lot of different groups who leave their homes for different reasons). These migrants pay this exorbitant amount to take a journey that they might not even live to see the end of.

However, we can understand that people who decide to take such a journey usually feel that this chance for a different life is better than staying in their current conditions. And that they are so desperate or at the end of their rope that this may be the best and only option. There is no other way to guarantee leaving for a better place.

The most glaring example of this in my mind is Sister Ping, who smuggled people into New York from her native province in China for years. She ran one of the biggest operations in the city; people died under her charge after paying basically what would have been a year's salary in the US. And yet, when Sister Ping passed, people flooded the streets of Chinatown to pay their respects. Because she granted them passage to the United States.

So yes. These things are bad, but people do end up using gang "services" because they could not acquire what they need otherwise.

But enough about Old New York. What about Old, Old New York? Like 1750s New York?

AC Rogue is not about the nuances of gang culture, so Hope Jensen's operations in New York outside of smuggling and experimenting on poison are pretty nebulous. Shay is supposed to be the complicated "hero" -- I would generously say anti-hero -- of Rogue who seeks to right the wrongs committed by Assassins. So he's presented as being in the right for crippling her supposed (we never get an actual confirmation, and Shay at this point only expects the worst out of the Assassins after their fuck-ups) plan to release poison gas on New York.

Poison gas aside, because of Shay's perspective, we are introduced to the gangs as criminals who extorted the Finnegans, but I wonder what other operations they ran? Were they also smuggling people into the city? Was Hope extorting businesses? Did she put money back into the city in other ways, ways we didn't see because we're looking at it through Shay's perspective? What were the needs that Old Old New York society that the gangs needed to fill?

We're arguably the hero for putting down criminals because of Shay and Monro, but I wonder if the formation of the Rooks in Syndicate would have looked very different if I were playing as a bystander or Assassin defector.

And morality debate aside, I'm very, very excited to look deeper into the Old Old New York gangs. They're like. The Grandfather of the Grandfather of the Godfather of the Modern NYC.

Chris Evans

Chris doesn't mind a tall s/o, he might make jokes here and there, you make fun of him. You and Hemsworth are both tall so it's fun when you're in the same rook together. Chris loves when you wear heels though, it makes it more funnier to him on the carpet when his lover is towering over him. If he had a dime every time someone asked, "How does it feel to be the short lover?" He'd be richer than he normally was.

Whether you're taller or not, he still treats you like you're the small spoon. But to be clear, you're definitely not Andre the Giant to him. You're not Shaq to him either, you're the love of his life and he will love you no matter what. Honestly, you probably got a lot of comments of being the pick of the relationship since most loves tall women.

Steve Rogers

Intimidated the first moment he saw you. It was at a party. Whether you had superpowers or not, he thought you were another supersoldier. "Nah, she's just the front desk receptionist," Tony says. It was a lie, you were in SHIELD as an agent, you actually were Tony Stark's secret bodyguard but also chaperone.

That was also a lie told by Tony. But you were an agent. Steve and Sam were both afraid to step up and ask how the hell you were tall. Thor was even impressed that she managed to be the same height as him and taller than Sif. Thor was fond of you and believed you were a God trying to be an undercover agent.

Years after, Steve asked you out and ever since people never shut up about the height (Tony himself) Natasha was the support but joked every once in a while. Steve always like the height, it was never seen a lot where he saw how strong and confident a tall woman could be. You literally looked like you'd kick ass even if you didn't know hoe to fight. His pre-serum self would be jealous. But he loved you and enjoyed how you looked at him with a smile.

Ransom Drysdale

There's a chance some things can get spicy. Not inna sexual way of course. There's challenges. Ransom doesn't like being downgraded by tall people but when it comes to his s/o. You're in bit of a tough ride. Ransom never knew how the hell he got you, but he thought you were a model at first.

He didn't plan on dating you, until he actually put effort into something more and eventually asked you out. Now he's gotten cocky. When with family, you've become almost as tall as his uncle, Walt. The family never has filters, especially Walt.

There's always going to be one person who picks on you and Ransom's height differences. "Have you grown taller, Y/N?" Walt asks, "Figured you'd stop by now, one day, it's gonna hurt Ransom's ego."

Being taller only made you the center attention but also help for the kids.

Andy Barber

Surprising enough, Andy didn't know how he got you and how you got so tall. You just happened to grow faster than him in Law School. Andy doesn't mind having tall wife but Jacob finds that shit cool. There's kids always talking about you with Jacob. Even you became an officer, you'd stop by and scare anyone.

Andy jokes here and there but he loves you no matter what. Sometimes the niegbors gossip on how a tall woman should be with a man taller than her but you didn't give a dang and married someone just a couple inches shorter. Who cares? Tall people are cool.

"How's the weather down there?"

"I'm a lawyer, not a Weather Forecaster."

Johnny Storm

There's two things, Johnny being mentally and physically bigger but in reality, he's neither. With a tall woman, he's shocked to see a tall glass of water (he says) roam in the building with Reed. There's a lot of moments where he's going to flirt almost any chance he gets.

"I know the air is pretty thin up there," Johnny began, he smirk, "Why don't you lay in my bed and catch your breath?"

"Uh... no?"

Rejected? Oh no, he doesn't take that for an answer. He's going to try.

"Do you play basketball? Maybe volleyball?"

"..."

"No?"

Johnny tries again. "You would totally be worth the climb!" Disgust received from you. "You're a tall drink of water. And I'm thirsty!"

"Just ask me out already and stop talking about my height." Johnny didn't need to be told twice as he happily gave you his number.

Jake Jensen

Oh, you two aren't the ones talking about height differences. It's your friends you guys work with. Yeah, Pooch out of the rest was a pain in the ass about your height. But you happened to be the most powerful person in the group.

Jensen loved your height, he liked being the smaller one (secretly). He liked it when people were watching you. Even though you weren't that overly tall than him, he liked it when you placed your hand on his head or shoulder. He likes looking up at you too. There's always a point where he gets on one knee to dramatically request help or anything.

The engines roared; Morgan snored in time with the droning of the plane.

It had been a week. Stressed but relieved that no one else had died, the team headed back to Quantico; mostly silent, alone with their thoughts.

The only chatter came from Reid and Y/N who sat mid plane, playing a game of chess that had been going on forever. Reid was smarter, but Y/N was able to distract him enough to sneak a few choice moves in here and there.

She leaned forward over the board, giving him a nice view of her cleavage, and set her middle finger atop a pawn, deciding.

"The thing about Martin Fletcher," Reid went on, eyes determined to stay on her hand and not stray further up. "He would technically be classified as a sexual sadist, but when interviewed before his execution, he admitted to the murders but did not express gaining any sexual satisfaction from any of the victims or scenes."

Y/N shrugged and took her hand off the pawn as a shiver ran down her spine. "Is that so weird? Everyone's different, Spencer."

"It's not," he agreed, eyeing the board and then Y/N, "I just found it interesting. He said that he liked to masturbate to pictures of classic cars and women wearing latex catsuits."

A chuckle sounded from across the plane and Y/N leaned over to look past Reid's shoulder. Hotch was seated diagonally across from her, ankle on his knee, cell phone in hand, listening but not.

"Something to add, Agent?" Y/N teased; a slick smile spreading across her lips.

Dark brown eyes lifted. "Classic cars," he repeated, staring hard at Y/N, "latex catsuits? Sounds like a-"

"Batman Complex," she finished for him with a faint laugh. "You're right."

Hotch looked up with a rare smile and a moment of tension filled the cabin.

Reid was lost between them.

"Batman Complex?" he questioned, brows knitting as his microprocessor of a brain struggled to catch up. "Is that a-"

"Inside joke," Y/N said, clearing her throat and tearing her attention away from Hotch. She leaned in again and gave them both a peek, moving her pawn forward. She let out a heavy breath as another shiver attacked her, and sat back in her seat. "Your move, stud."

Reid pressed his lips together in a confused smile and studied the board. "You know, superhero fetishes are ranked in the top ten of sexual fantasies for white males ages 15-25."

Y/N squeezed her thighs together. "Just missed the cutoff, huh?"

His cheeks burned bright. "I-I've never…"

"Oh, come on, Spencer. Everyone has fantasies. Everyone's got that one...mmm...thing that…" Y/N sat up straight and gripped the armrest for a quick second, her voice growing weak. She shot a glance at Hotch, and cleared her throat. "We all have that one thing that seems a little strange. Nothing to be ashamed of."

Reid ignored her squirming and moved his rook. "I don't think so. I don't...really…"

Y/N licked her lips absently and looked down at the chessboard. There was no way she was going to win. Not even a little. All she had up her sleeve was distraction, even if she was a little more than distracted herself.

“Are you seriously telling me, Dr. Reid…” She spoke slowly, capturing one of his pawns as his eyes glazed over slightly. “...that you don’t have any weird... sexy things…” She picked up his piece and brought it towards her lips, slowly rolling the top around in her fingertips. “...floating around in that head of yours?”

Reid swallowed hard.

Hotch shifted in his seat.

Morgan rolled onto his side, his snore fading to a gentle purr.

“No?” Reid watched as Y/N grinned, rubbing her thumb across the top of the pawn slowly. “I don’t know.”

“Too bad,” she shrugged, sitting back as her stomach tightened a bit. “I’d imagine you’re full of interesting ideas.”

Reid smiled and looked down at the board, a bit of hair falling into his eyes. “Ideas, yes,” he admitted. “Sexual ideas? No.”

Y/N held her breath for a moment and her eyes fluttered closed. She pushed her knees up and thighs together, going up on her tiptoes for a split second before relaxing with a sigh. “You gotta have something dirty going on up there.”

Bishop to rook.

“Not really.”

“I don’t believe you,” she said simply.

Hazel eyes narrowed. “I’m not one to lie, Y/N.”

Her shoulders twitched suddenly and she exhaled slowly, eyes flickering over to Hotch who sat as before, watching but not, listening but not. “I guess that’s true,” she said, breath quickening with each word. “But if you were one to lie, you’d probably be good at it, thus making it impossible for me to know how true that statement is.”

“Well,” he said with a small smile, “I suppose that’s true as well.”

Y/N’s hips rolled unconsciously and she dug her nails into her thigh to stop the movement. “So, no dirty thoughts ever?” she asked, leaning in to study the board.

Reid’s eyes drifted to the deep line between her breasts and his voice grew tight. “No more than anyone else, I would assume. You?”

Y/N pulled her bottom lip through her teeth as her eyes hazed over for a second. She tipped her head to look at Hotch, chest rising and falling with heavy but controlled breaths. “Oh, I always have dirty thoughts, Spencer. Always.” She chewed her lip again, canine falling like a dagger into the corner of her mouth.

“Such as?”

A bout of turbulence shook the cabin as the plane rolled through a mess of heavy clouds, and Y/N sat back in her chair, gripping the armrests. She closed her eyes and let out a silent moan through gently parted lips; knees shaking almost imperceptibly.

When the plane regained its smooth glide, Y/N opened her eyes and gave Reid a dreamy smile. “Well, such as…” Her gaze traveled to Hotch for a brief moment and then back to the chessboard. “Sometimes I think about having sex in here.”

“In here?” Reid swallowed hard.

“Yeah.” She licked her lips and crossed her arms, forcing her breasts to pop beneath her tight blouse. “Right in here.” She dropped her voice and her arms, leaning closer. “Can you imagine how much fun that would be, Spencer? Cumming your brains out at 60,000 feet?”

Reid, who had subconsciously leaned in as Y/N did, now sat back, spell broken. “Well, actually, we rarely travel above 41,000 feet. Sometimes 42,000.”

Y/N laughed. “You’re killing me, kid.”

“No,” he smiled, “just kicking your ass at chess.”

His queen flew down the board and Y/N gasped, sitting on the edge of her seat.

“Well...shit,” she panted, brows knitting, stomach clenching, then relaxing.

“Checkmate.”

Y/N eyed the board and then shook her head. “Damnit.”

“Of course, if you had actually been paying attention, you may have made a better go of it.”

Hotch laughed under his breath.

Y/N blinked quickly. “Excuse me? I’m paying enormous attention.”

Reid sat back and smiled. “Don’t get me wrong, I think you played very well being that you were desperate to distract me from the fact that you were having multiple orgasms while talking to me.”

“What!” Her face flushed and her guilty smile was unfading.

“You’ve been sweating, out of breath, muscles clenching and releasing. Your pulse has been elevated and your pupils dilating at a rapid pace. I’m assuming you’re being stimulated by a remote device controlled by an app on Hotch’s phone.”

She stammered. “That’s-not-”

“If I’m correct, you’ve had about four orgasms since we sat down.” Reid stopped and clasped his hands, waiting smugly to hear if he was correct.

“And you,” he said quietly, “owe me twenty bucks.”

“Yeah, yeah.” Y/N waved him off dismissively and rushed to the bathroom to remove the vibe.

“Twenty bucks?” Reid asked, turning in his seat.

Hotch closed his phone and tucked it safely inside his jacket pocket. “She thought she could stay calm enough so that you wouldn’t notice. I knew she’d fail.”

Spencer frowned, a bit confused. “That’s kind of mean, isn’t it?”  

Hotch shrugged and pushed his seat back, closing his eyes. “I don’t know,” he said with a smirk. “I had fun.”
