I was tagged a few times to do this. First by @anamoon63, thank you! ❤️ You requested both James and Finn, so I'll start with James and will address Finn on a later one. 😊

What uncommon/common fear do they have?

James is terribly afraid people can see the pain behind his smiles. He's afraid of being "found out." People are slowly catching on he's actually not doing okay at all, and he hates that. He wants to keep everything close to his chest and decide for himself who he trusts with his shit.

Do they have any pet peeves?

When people don't clear up their mess. Especially now that he lives in a student dorm it annoys him. Some housemates leave their dirty dishes on the counter or even on the tables and it frustrates James to no end. He got along fine with Chris, his old roommate, but he's also quite happy he didn't get assigned a new roommate after Chris left. Also because of the answer to the previous question.

What are 3 items you can find in their bedroom?

His guitar, his keyboard and empty staff paper.

What do they notice first in a person?

Whether they're being real or pretending. James sees through the "fakes". It takes one to know one, I guess.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how high is their pain tolerance?

Quite high, probably an 8. He can handle physical pain a bit too well... And thus uses it to mask his emotional pain...

Do they go into fight or flight mode when under pressure?

James definitely flees from his internal pain. He doesn't want to feel everything he feels, so he tries to escape. In other ways he is actually quite a fighter, but he fights against the wrong things.

Do they come from a big family/are they a family person?

James' relationship with his parents is strained, but he adores his sisters and is a devoted uncle to his nieces Viola and Rosa. He also loved his grandmother and has a strong relationship with his uncle Oliver and aunt Claire, Daniel's parents.

What animal represents them best?

I answered this before and I'm sticking to a ragdoll cat, because they're cuddly and affectionate, yet very independent and slightly cross eyed. 😉

What is a smell that they dislike?

The smell of blood is triggering for James...

Have they broken any bones?

He broke the tip of his index finger on his right hand when he dropped a heavy shelf on it when he was a teenager. He couldn't play guitar for weeks and it made him very annoyed.

How would a stranger likely describe them?

Outgoing, charming, confident (proving they don't truly know him).

Are they a night owl or a morning bird?

Definite night owl

What is a flavour they hate and a flavour they love?

James has a bit of a sweet tooth, so anything inherently bitter is not his favourite thing to eat.

Do they have any hobbies?

Unsurprisingly, anything musical. Writing music, making music, singing. It's his happy place.

Boom, surprise birthday party! How do they react to surprises?

While James would be all smiles when someone threw him a surprise party, deep down, he would much rather spend his birthday with his friends or someone special. He does like surprises in general, but when you unknowingly catch him at a mental low, James would secretly struggle.

Do they like to wear jewellery?

Not particularly.

Do they have neat or messy handwriting?

What are the two emotions they feel the most?

Currently, it's clear he's fallen desperately in love, has no idea how to deal with that, and it takes over all his thoughts and emotions. I wouldn't know how to pinpoint two emotions for James even if this wasn't the case, though. His emotions always go all over the place, from anxiety to excitement and everything in between.

Do they have a favourite fabric?

Nothing synthetic, but other than that he doesn't really care.

What kind of accent do they have?

None, really. His voice is warm and kind. It's not very deep, but definitely not high either.

She was not treated nicely there and unfortunately she was used as both a reliever and a ragdoll but one day during the action she saw a man in a white kimono and long white hair with soft blue eyes the thing she didn't expect was to see his one soft gays turned into anger as he stopped through the crowd and looked at her without a second people started screaming as all of them began to die Beachbody fell on the ground as they all went silent Demaryius walked towards her cage and broke the bars and Breaking the Chain that kept her from trying to wiggle out or run away he picked her up and walked out of the auction as sister Rosa said it a blaze

Facts

Was around 9 years old when she was in the auction

Therefore she grew up mostly on Homeworld

She never saw the sun and only saw a white fog roaming the area

But she never liked her name kikia so father changed her name to serious Zareth

Due to trauma she's a strong distrust of men

She didn't even trust this children there or even the male children

But over time she began to grow some trust mostly in her family here on Homeworld

It seemed that the men that were raised on Homeworld or more respectful and did not have perverted or disgusting urges

Luo was one of demaryius's children he looked almost like a goat

With his horns and ears he helped her during her breakdowns or nightmares when she was too scared to ask for help

Along with the other children she was finally a place that made her feel safe despite the war that is going on

But when she got older she became a soldier for father Demaryius

Rosa's first Christmas with the fam

...because it's that time of year, y'all. I don't write much these days, as life is a lot, and I've done most of what I wanted to. But I managed to put out just a wee bit of Christmas Taystela fluff. Well, er, fluff with a side of killing off the yeti.

The Elysian Lodge, La Huerta, 2042

“Rosa, wanna come help me make some Christmas cookies? You can lick the spoon afterwards and everything!”

Auntie Quinn was warm, and friendly, and nice. The least intimidating of all the grown-ups, to Rosa’s mind. So it was an easy decision to say ‘yes’ to making cookies.

“Are we doing them in shapes?” Rosa mumbled into her thumb. They’d made cookies in Christmas shapes one time, when she was in The Home; though the same old kids hogged the green and red icing, and she didn’t really get much of a look-in as a result.

“That’s the plan!” Quinn replied, beaming her welcoming smile. “Erin’s just digging out some cookie cutters.”

Rosa felt her legs turn to lead, even as she wandered over. How many of them were going to be doing this? If all the other, bigger kids were helping out too, it might be hard to enjoy herself….

Quinn must have known this, for she said; “It’ll be a team of you, me, and Erin. E is an absolute whiz at baking-- she’ll help us out with some of the tricky bits!”

Rosa knew that Quinn didn’t really need help; she baked things for her job. She must just like making the kids feel good. That was pretty nice of her. And Erin… if Quinn was the least intimidating of all the grown-ups, then Erin had to be the least intimidating of all the kids. She was gentle, with a soft, tinkling laugh. She looked out for the little ones, and that included Rosa. Erin was definitely Rosa’s favourite of her three cousins.

“Me, you, Erin… and Princess Daisy?” she suggested, holding up her ragdoll fairy.

Estela came and sat down at the breakfast bar. “Or,” she said, “I could look after Princess Daisy for you. I have a feeling it might get a little messy.”

Shyly, Rosa snuggled up to her mom, pressing the doll into her lap. “She’s gonna watch?” Which meant, of course, Princess Daisy and Mama Estela. It was a ton easier to have fun with the safety net of mom close by.

“We’ll be right here if you need anything.” Estela spoke firmly, as though she meant every word. Rosa always trusted that she did… and so she relaxed into a morning of baking fun among trusted friends-- while her mom watched with a mug of cocoa and a ragdoll fairy in hand.

In the Elysian’s main lounge, Rosa’s other mom was slumped in an armchair, sipping her own steaming cocoa.

“I guess you’re not as young this time round… gotta be feeling it different,” Diego consoled. “But that doesn’t mean you’re not doing great.”

Taylor groaned, but gave her old friend an appreciative glance. “I don’t know if ‘great’ is the word I’d use, buddy, but thanks. What I do know is that I can’t wait for home-schooling to be behind us. Maybe we’ll take her out for a year when she’s older like we did with Liv, but for now, this just isn’t working.”

Michelle sat down with them, draping herself over the arm of the plushest couch. She, Quinn, and their family, were spending a rare Christmas on La Huerta, keen to make the most of the opportunity while the growing kids still wanted to spend time with their moms. Between a busy work life as a neurohospitalist and a home life as mom of a fifteen and eleven year old, she knew all too well what it was to teeter on the edge of burnout.

“Please, you’re doing amazing,” she scoffed. “Last time we were here, I don’t think I heard a word out of Rosa’s mouth the whole two weeks; you wouldn’t guess it to look at her now. You guys have made her feel secure, and it shows. Now you’ve got that attachment, I know it’ll just get easier.”

“Thanks…. Thanks, Michelle,” Taylor said quietly. “A lot of the time, it’s ‘one step forward, two steps back’, but we’re getting there.”

“That’s all you can do,” Grace assured kindly. “One step at a time. Just take some moments to come up for breath as you go.”

Taylor let herself sink deeper into her chair, hearing Rosa’s giggles floating from the nearby kitchen. Where it mattered, they were doing great. And she damn well deserved that hot mug of cocoa and the relaxed, cosy Christmas Eve she was looking forward to.

And yet, not even two hours later, Taylor found herself trudging through the snow into a darkening evening, carrying a blanket laden with Christmas cookies that now seemed destined to make up the final meal of a dying yeti. Beside her, Estela had a rugged-up Rosa riding piggy-back.

“You definitely jinxed it, Grace!” Michelle complained, wrapping her arms ever tighter around herself to brace against the cold. “‘Quiet uneventful holiday’…. was that really too much to ask?”

“I must have forgotten to touch wood,” Grace admitted good-naturedly. She and her family had spent rather more time on La Huerta in the intervening years than had Michelle and Quinn’s clan, so much so that she barely batted an eyelid at an impromptu expedition into the mountains. So long as they weren’t going far, she was confident all would be well.

“I still think this is a bad idea,” said Isla resolutely. She’d been seriously injured by one of La Huerta’s legendary guardians in the past… and this was a goddamn yeti. Probably in pain, and definitely dangerous.

Quinn put an arm around her daughter. “One of us can take you back to the lodge-- there’s no pressure on you to come along.”

“No!” Isla scowled. “Not that I don’t trust you to keep Con safe or anything, but you and Mom are gonna be busy with the yeti-thing. If Conor’s crazy enough to go sniffing around a dying monster, I’m going to be there looking out for the doofus.”

Conor, as they spoke, was up at the front of the small pack, hanging off Liv and Jeimy as they led the way to where they found the ailing yeti.

Taylor was grateful that Rosa was right within arm’s reach, and sensibly cautious of the unknown-- for in this case, Rosa’s ‘unknown’ was something best kept at a respectful distance. They’d be there to comfort Arktos, but by no means would the children be placed in harm’s way.

“Con’s not getting anywhere near the yeti, Isla,” she assured. “All of you kids are going to sit right back and keep your distance.”

“Thanks Auntie Tay.”

“Typical,” Michelle laughed, shaking her head, “people always listen to Taylor…. You know I should bring you in to talk to some of my patients one of these days….”

Taylor caught her old friend’s eye and grinned. “Not on your life.”

Rosa could smell the mammoth beast before she saw it, and instinctively clung tighter to her mom’s neck and shoulders. In front of them at the entrance to a cave, Aleister was settling his teenage girls down, and they were joined by Isla and Conor.

“Woah!” Conor gasped. “She’s bigger than an elephant!”

“Con, sit down, you idiot!” Isla tugged at his jacket.

And as Estela trudged closer to them, Rosa’s jaw dropped at the sight of the creature that had Conor entranced.

Arktos filled the cave from floor to ceiling, even as she lay on her belly. Upon her massive head were two spiralling horns, one of which was broken. Her misty eyes darted over her visitors, and her nose snorted as she sniffed the air.

Estela helped Rosa down from her back. “She wouldn’t want to hurt you. She’s like Furball-- we can communicate with her way more than any normal animal. But she’s also as big as a bus and with horns and claws… so we’ll just keep back here. Are you okay?”

Rosa nodded, but stuck close, overawed. She’s seen some pretty special things on La Huerta, but nothing quite so magical as the storied yeti-bear. And the yeti-bear needed help….

“Is Auntie ‘Chelle gonna make her better?” she asked in whisper.

Taylor’s face clouded, but she didn’t shy from the question. “I don’t think so, darling, no.” She could sense it in her bones, as though a soft hum of consciousness wa being shared between herself and the yeti; it was simply Arktos’ time. “Arktos has lived for a long time, and she’s now very sick, and very tired. I think she’s ready to die.”

Rosa responded with just a quiet “Oh,” and sat back in Estela’s lap.

“What we’re going to do,” Taylor said, “is to make her comfortable at the end. Auntie Michelle’s medicine will do that. And those cookies you kids brought-- I reckon Arktos will love them. Auntie Quinn and I will do the feeding, okay? We’ve had the most connection with her over the years; it’s probably safest.”

So, most of the group settled just out the mouth of the cave, giving enough space so the yeti was not to feel crowded. There they kept a quiet vigil, watching on from a distance, and offering caring thoughts. Over time, Conor edged closer, quickly pulled back in line by Liv, who’d taken it upon herself to help Isla with keeping him safe while their mothers were busy.

“She’s old and sick, Con,” Estela said flatly, “but she could still snap you like a twig. Anyway-- she doesn’t know you. Let her die with peace.”

Con made a show of planting himself firmly down where he was meant to be, right between Isla and Liv. “Do you think she likes singing?” he asked after a moment’s contemplation. “We could sing some Christmas carols or something. Not that she knows it’s Christmas Eve or anything….”

Isla’s eyes lit up. “Should have brought your guitar.” And then, she began softly singing the first holiday tune to come to her head; ‘White Christmas’.

The others followed suit; first Conor and Liv, and Jeimy who would turn down a sing-along when hell froze over, then Grace and Erin joined in, then everyone else. Only Rosa remained silent, too self-conscious to do more than mouth the words to the songs she knew. She caught a warm smile from her Mama Taylor in the cave; maybe Arktos really liked the singing.

“So, Rosi… what have you asked Santa for?” Isla asked a while later, clearly hoping some quiet conversation would help the younger girl through what had become a sombre evening-- it was, after all, a lot for a little kid of seven to deal with.

Rosa was surprised. Isla was fifteen-- surely she didn’t believe in Santa still. Even her younger brother, Conor, would have wised up by his age. Did Isla just think Rosa was such a baby to believe in something that was clearly made-up?

 “Err…,” she said softly, not wanting to be rude, as it was pretty obvious that Isla was being nice, “I don’t really believe in Santa”.

 If he was real, he’d probably do more to help kids with no homes. Kids like Rosa-- well, Rosa until now.

“Oh-- that was a big assumption I made, huh? Are your moms gonna do ‘Santa’ then, or just keeping things real?”

Rosa glanced back to her Mama Estela… who was better than any make-believe old bearded dude to her mind. “Moms said Santa can be a game we play, but I know it’s just them.”

“That’s what we do!” Conor chimed in. “If we wanna get presents from the big guy, we go through the motions of believing, even though it’s obviously Mom and Mama.”

Erin, sitting beside Rosa, grinned. “Dad used to dress up and everything!”

Estela snorted affectionately. “A bit thin to be convincing, but that probably would help for going up and down chimneys.” And the twins chuckled.

“Thank you,” Aleister sniffed. “I can’t say I’m sorry that particular joy of parenthood is behind us. I certainly was not convincing, and I don’t believe Imogen bought it for even a second.”

“Nothing gets past you, mija,” Estela said warmly to her niece.

Then, the gigantic bear groaned, and the kids fell silent again, not wanting to disturb her.

Rosa was entranced by Arktos. The yeti looked like a monster, but she was calm and gentle as Taylor, Quinn and Michelle tended to her, carefully taking those special Christmas cookies from their hands, and letting them hold her paw as a comfort.

“Is she hurting?” Rosa whispered, so only her mom could hear.

Estela frowned. “I don’t think so. Michelle gave her something to take the pain away, or at least making it a lot less. She probably feels just… exhausted, like her whole body is heavy.”

Rosa trusted that to be the case, for her Mama Estela never lied to her, even to make her feel better.

It was not much later when Arktos breathed her last, the silence broken only by Furball’s whimpering at her colossal paws. Quinn sat up straight, her face wet with tears, and gestured for the others to join them to say goodbye.

Waiting her turn after the older kids, Rosa held her mothers’ hands. Her Mama Taylor was teary.

“The yeti-bear was your friend?” she whispered.

“Oh--” Taylor wiped her face. “Yeah, I guess she was. A long, long time ago, she even let me ride her into battle against some seriously evil bad guys. She climbed up the side of a big old hotel building with me hanging on! But mostly… I’ve always been happy knowing she’s out there in the mountains. It felt like she’d keep us safe if ever we needed it. She helped a few of us out over the years.”

“Mrrrp,” Furball confirmed.

The others headed out of the cave, and Rosa felt suddenly nervous. She watched on as her moms lay their hands upon the yeti’s shoulder, paying their respects to an old friend. She wasn’t sure she could be brave enough to do the same.

“Night-night, yeti-bear,” she mumbled. Then she dared to let her fingers ever-so-lightly skim Arktos’ thick fur. “I hope your life was happy and nice.”

“I reckon it was,” Estela assured. “And I can tell you this for free; there are worse things than dying of old age, surrounded by people who love you, and being fed cookies. Come on, mi vida. We better leave her in peace.”

Hoisted back up onto her secure place upon her mom’s back, Rosa nestled in. It was a strain to keep her watering eyes open, and tucked up against Estela’s warm coat, she was so cosy….

Taylor tenderly pulled up the heavy blanket around her young daughter’s chin. Rosa had barely stirred when they came back up to the suite, their clothes damp from the snow. She’d cried a little, moved by the passing of a magnificent being, and then fallen asleep for a second time, in Taylor’s arms.

It wasn’t the Christmas Eve Taylor’d had in mind. Still, a stocking hung at the end of the bed, already filled, and both moms had left goodnight kisses on Rosa’s forehead, so all was well in the scheme of things. Liv had disappeared off to her own room with Jeimy, for she was all grown up now. Just Taylor and Estela left awake in their cosy suite.

“We’ll just have to break tradition and do the natilla tomorrow,” Estela yawned.

Her little one tended to, Taylor got into her own pyjamas and slipped under the covers. As always, she was drawn by the warmth of her wife’s body.

“I’d been so looking forward to introducing Rosi to the Montoya Family Christmas Eve,” she said, sighing. “What matters is she’s happy, and she is, but she’s already seven… every holiday counts when they grow up so fast. And the sooner family traditions get cemented in for her, the better. She’s gotta be part of it.”

Estela frowned a little. Childhood slipped away, and then it was gone. They’d wanted to give Rosa an evening of simple joys, and somehow they’d ended up introducing her to death instead. They could hope to do better next time round, but life was nothing if not unpredictable. What Estela knew they could do, was be there to soften the bumps in the road as Rosa came upon them.

“The general gist was there,” she admitted. “We stayed up. Ate something sweet-- in this case, shared with a dying yeti. We had family around. I’m pretty sure ‘best laid plans going down the crapper’ is a Montoya family tradition anyway.”

Taylor couldn’t help the smile that tugged at her lips. “True, that. Gotta be the reason for all these grey hairs I’m getting….”

Estela laughed, and brought Taylor closer, kissing her. “Mi amor, you are getting near fifty. You’re gonna have to make peace with the grey hairs.”

Taylor returned the kiss, lingering in the feel of the woman she loved near to her. For all the challenges of motherhood, peace was one thing she didn’t truly need to want for. She had it when Rosa fell asleep, content in the knowledge that her moms were there for her. And she had it in all those years she’d spent with Estela and with Liv, and the more they still had to share.

“Happy Christmas,” she said quietly. “And now, I think we’d do well to take a leaf out of Rosi’s book and get some shut-eye.

Estela kissed her again, then blew one across the room to their slumbering child. “Happy Christmas… goodnight.”

New headcanons for Hellinois Thursday/IDWBF that I came up with!!!!

- after adopting Rosa, Markus becomes a stay-at-home dad, since he wasn’t able or interested in finding a new job. He absolutely LOVES spending the day with his little girl while Illy is out working.

- when Markus and Illinois announced they were adopting a baby, Yancy didn’t realize what they meant right away. He saw the onesie Markus gave him (that said “coolest big bro ever” 🥹) and thought it was for Miguel’s cat for a solid 20 seconds before realizing what it actually meant. (Yes this headcanon is based on that one tik tok where the guy thinks his sister got him a onesie for his cat 🤣)

- Yancy and Miguel both smoked at different points in their lives, but since cigarettes are not allowed at the penitentiary (obviously) Yancy can’t even stand the smell of cigarette smoke anymore. Miguel has been working on quitting for a while too for health reasons and bc he never really enjoyed it.

- Yancy also got extremely emotional when Markus and Illinois brought Rosa back from the adoption agency. He cried for at least half an hour and only stopped when Markus let him hold Rosa for the first time.

- Miguel’s cat Snickerdoodle is a ragdoll so he’s very good with Rosa, as ragdolls are known to be good cats for families with little kids

- as I kinda mentioned before, Yancy (and Miguel) become like big brothers to Rosa, and she absolutely adores both of them. When she figured out how to get out of her crib she would often toddle down the hall to climb into bed with one of them, which almost gave Markus and Illinois a heart attack the first few times when they entered the nursery and saw that their baby wasn’t there

- Markus got a tattoo of a rose on his wrist after adopting Rosa 🥹

- Illinois didn’t think Markus wanted a baby for a long time and was willing to give up his dream of being a father after they got married, until Markus brought up having children one day and actually seemed to want to do so

- originally from Pallet Town and decided to settle back down there after her partner, Red’s father, had left the family and had since then raised Red on her own for the most part. For the most part is as silent as her son and tends to come across as cold but in reality is the exact opposite. Eventually becomes a surrogate mother figure to the other two of Kanto trio as well as Daisy (after they’ve settled their old issues with each other)

Konoe Yamabuki

- maiden name Shinkouin (心光院), comes from a fairly well-off family. Was happily married and had a simple life with her husband Rei until the latter’s death about two years after the birth of their daughter. Fortunately had a good support network of friends and family help her through rough times. Became a close friend of Grace when she and her family lived in Cherrygrove City.

Hanayo Fuyukita

- maiden name Hasegawa (長谷川), originally from Olivine City but chose to move with her family to Littleroot Town, Norman’s hometown, after the latter decided to accept the offer of being Petalburg City’s gym leader. There were tensions in their marriage shortly after their move due to Norman’s busy schedule, not helped when their daughter decides to disappear from the public eye months after becoming Champion. Over the years and with bumps along the road they do manage to keep their marriage intact.

Ayako Kagayaku

- quietly divorced her husband Usuaki Tadano and kept it hidden from her daughter who came to believe her father was dead, though she did eventually relent and told her the whole truth. A few years after the events involving Team Galactic and her daughter briefly becoming Champion she starts dating and eventually marries Keizen Tourai, becoming the stepmother to Kouki and Akemi Tourai though she and her daughter still kept their surnames.

Gwendolyn Greyhound

- maiden name Beagles, preferring to go by ‘Gwen’, a former pokemon trainer and musician. Her husband, Ian, died a few years before the twins set off on their journey. Generally a very compassionate and open-minded woman and was more willing to welcome N into the family in contrast to her daughter who still bore a grudge (she gets over it eventually).

Stella Ragdoll

- her husband Felix was the one to change his surname to hers! Volunteered work at pokemon centers in Unova when she was younger instead of going on a journey like others her age did. Her husband recently retired from the International Police before the first Team Plasma incident though (unsurprisingly to them) their daughter eventually chooses to join the organization herself a couple years after stepping down as Champion.

Grace Brouillard

- originally from Vaniville Town, was a talented Rhyhorn racer until she decided to elope with her then boyfriend Ruben Richard. Her marriage had been a rocky one especially with her husband’s work forcing them move frequently. Believing having kids could help their relationship but having difficulty conceiving a child, they decided to adopt Calem. About a year later while living in Cherrygrove City she manages to conceive a daughter. Following a tragic accident, her divorce and return to Kalos, she returned to racing and eventually takes to coaching aspiring racers.

Ayame Ryuuseigawa

- maiden name Mike (三毛), an infamous trainer back in her youth and still a force to be reckoned with. Met her husband Sirius when she saved him from getting mugged. Somehow inherited a distant relative’s home in Alola and thus decided to move there, though her husband still had work in Kanto and thus couldn’t join them immediately.

Susanna B. Hendrick

- maiden name Lesley, her family owns a large farm in Postwick. Initially lived in Wyndon with her husband and son. Following the death of her mother they decide to move back to her hometown and help out her uncle in running the farm, though her husband still continues his work in Wyndon. She has a niece who she housed sometime during her older sister’s divorce which happened right around League Season.

The CW Rogues: My Biggest Gripe With the 2014 Flash Show

In many ways, the CW Flash show is what got me into comics. While I had watched (and loved) Justice League and Justice League Unlimited and read loads of DC guidebooks as a kid, it wasn’t until I saw a clip from the 2014 CW Flash show that I really got invested in the DC Universe. While I had already started watching B:TAS (and loving it), Batman wasn’t what got me into comics. No, that was the Flash...or rather, it was Captain Cold. While watching a clip from the Justice League episode Flash and Substance on YouTube, I saw a link to a clip from “Family of Rogues” (from Season 2 of CW’s Flash). Intrigued by the premise, I found the show on Netflix, watched the entire episode, and was hooked. Not only was the Flash just as nice as he had been on Justice League, but two of his Rogues were siblings, and they actually cared about one another. I wanted to know more, so I looked Captain Cold and the Golden Glider up. My research into Cold and Glider led me to the other Rogues, and soon I became a Flash fan. I watched the show, I re-watched “Flash and Substance”, I read articles about the characters from the comics...and eventually, I started reading the comics themselves. I loved the characters and the lore, and I enjoyed the generally lighthearted tone of the books even into the modern era. Unfortunately, as I learned more about the comics, I grew less and less interested in the 2014 TV show. It made too many alterations to character I liked in the comics...and eventually, I basically stopped watching the show out of frustration. Ironically enough, by getting me into comics, the show alienated me from itself....and a big reason for that was the way it handled the Rogues. Here’s a rundown of the CW Rogues, and why I was frustrated with most of them. 

1. Captain Cold. I actually enjoy Captain Cold on the CW show; he’s recognizable as Len Snart and his sarcasm game is on point. (It doesn’t hurt that Wentworth Miller is really attractive, either). His relationships with Lisa, Mick, and Barry are fantastic, and it’s a relief to have him be treated as a competent threat. That being said...he’s a bit too suave for Captain Cold, isn’t he? Silver Age Cold thought he was suave, but he wasn’t; and modern Captain Cold is middle-aged, grouchy, and very rough around the edges. His smooth, suave nature reminds me more of classic Sam (the original Mirror Master) than Captain Cold. 

2. Heat Wave. Dominic Purcell did a great job with the role he was given, and physically he’s an excellent match for Mick. That being said, CW Mick is very different from the Mick in the classic comics, who was a bit dim-witted and rather gentle and sweet for a supervillain. CW Mick, by contrast, is, as I think @gorogues put it, “Hothead McAngryman”, which wouldn’t be so bad if it didn’t seem to have bled back into the comics themselves. Villains with fire powers being hotheads is a bit overdone, so I’m not thrilled to see comic Mick being put into that role. 

3. Golden Glider. Hands down, Lisa is my favorite of the CW Rogues. Despite the fact that her costume and power set are completely different than they were in the comics, they managed to get her personality down pretty well; making her just as dangerous and competent as the boys. Flirtatious, crafty, devious, and yet still at least somewhat sympathetic, the CW version of Lisa Snart takes home the gold for the best adaptation of a Rogue. If only they hadn’t completely forgotten that she existed. 

4. Pied Piper. Note that I have not seen his Season 6 appearance, so I’m just judging this based on his appearances in Seasons 1 and 2. Piper is disappointing; in his first appearance he wasn’t as fun as Silver/Bronze Age Piper or as sympathetic as modern Piper, and I’m not crazy about the idea of him being motivated primarily by revenge on Wells/Thawne, since that wasn’t his motivation in the comics at all. I also don’t remember him being able to puppet or hypnotize people with his music, which is too bad, since that’s his main schtick in the comics. What’s more, if you want to reform a character, don’t do it offscreen via reality warping and then forget about him for four seasons. It sounds like his Season 6 appearance was better, but I haven’t seen it so I can’t comment on it. Also, “the Pied Piper” is kind of a nonindicative name if he doesn’t play a pipe/flute. 

5. Trickster II (Axel Walker). Axel was actually decent in the CW show. I still like comic Axel better, but they got the gist of his character down and even made him a bit sympathetic. In fact, he’s probably in the top three best Rogue adaptations that the CW did. 

6. Trickster I (James Jesse). I love watching Mark Hamill play CW’s Trickster...but man, he is not playing Giovanni Giuseppi on the CW show. He’s playing the Joker with a different name. It’s especially weird since we know from JLU and that one short where Mark Hamill plays himself, the Joker, the Trickster, and Swamp Thing that Hamill can do a non-Joker Trickster and do it well, so my suspicion is that it was just because Trickster was also the Joker in the 1990s Flash show (where he was also played by Mark Hamill). Regardless, murdering random people and threatening to blow up small children during Christmas is not something the Trickster should be doing. 

Although this does prove Mark Hamill could do a live-action Joker. I’d pay money to see that. Mark Hamill is a great Joker. 

7. Weather Wizard. CW Weather Wizard isn’t egregiously bad. He’s not out-of-character like Trickster, and he’s not boring to watch, but at the same time it feels like there’s something missing. Maybe it’s because he doesn’t quote Twain. Maybe it’s because there’s not the sense that he was a loser before he got his powers. Maybe it’s because they changed his origin completely (and also made him older than Clyde for some reason). It could even be because he’s not wearing a green leotard with a huge collar, puffy sleeves, and ridiculous elf boots. Whatever it is, though, he’s just missing that spark that makes me like comic book Wizard so much. 

8. Mirror Master I (Sam Scudder). I don’t know how you make Sam Scudder more boring than New 52/Rebirth did, but somehow the CW version of the character pulled it off. Granted, Cold had already stolen some of Sam’s characterization, so that didn’t help, but they could’ve leaned into his skills as an inventor or his love of showmanship or something. Instead, we got a generic thug with what was basically Evan McCulloch’s power set. Boo! Boo I say! 

9. Top (Roscoe/Rosa Dillon). The Brave and the Bold Top is more interesting than the CW version, and he doesn’t even have spoken lines! That’s how boring this Top is. Also, the gender swap was pretty pointless. I wouldn’t have minded a female Top if she’d been intelligent and creepy and snobbish in the way that Roscoe is, but why even bother changing the gender if the character is going to have such a minor role? They also substantially depowered the CW Top, since Rosa can’t spin at super speed and isn’t telekinetic. A massive missed opportunity. 

10. Mirror Master II (Evan/Eva McCulloch). I can’t comment on how good of a character Eva is, since I haven’t watched any of the episodes with her in them, but I will say I am disappointed that the character does not seem to be Scottish, does not have Evan’s weird sense of humor, and lacks his tooth gap. 

11. Captain Boomerang (George “Digger” Harkness). Not only did he not actually appear on the Flash, but he was also boring and didn’t even seem to have an Australian accent. I was very disappointed with his role in the CW. 

And now for characters who aren’t Rogues: 

-CW Eobard is really good. I have no real complaints about him. 

-CW Grodd is also really good, though I do wish he was from Gorilla City as per the comics rather than a lab experiment. 

-CW Magenta got most of the important character beats down but felt a bit out of place with Barry as the Flash. 

-CW Shade was possibly even more boring than CW Sam, which is saying something. 

-CW Zoom didn’t really feel like Zoom at all. Not only was it weird to see him fighting Barry and not Wally, but he was just a generic serial killer and didn’t have Zolomon’s unique outlook on the world. The loss of his time manipulation powers was likewise disappointing.

-CW Jay is really good. I love him. 

-CW Jesse Quick has very little in common with her comic book counterpart; I like the comic version better but don’t actually mind the CW version all that much.

-CW Wally is decent enough, though I don’t see why they couldn’t have kept him as Iris’ nephew rather than making him her brother. Also, they didn’t use him nearly as much as they should have. 

-CW Barry I generally like a lot; Grant Gustin is a good fit for the character. That being said, I do wish they hadn’t given him the dead mom origin, which was a retcon I am not fond of. 

-CW Iris is quite good (in the first three seasons, at least); she’s intelligent, loyal to Barry, dedicated to her job, and quite independent. The fact that she and Barry were foster siblings in the CW universe is kind of weird, though, since it makes their romance kind of awkward. 

-Joe West is not Ira West (Iris’s father in the comics), but I actually don’t care. Joe West is made of awesome. (I like Ira too, but I like Joe enough that I don’t mind having him replace Ira.)

-The Fiddler on the CW had very little to do with the comic Fiddler. 

-I’ve never been particularly invested in the Thinker (comic or show), but I will say that the CW’s version of the character was very different from his comics counterpart. 

-CW Ragdoll was just as creepy and unsettling as comic book Ragdoll, though he had a very different backstory. 

-I never expected Baby Josh to make it into the CW, let alone as a gender-swapped teenager named Joss who wanted to kill Weather Wizard. It felt like they never knew where to go with her character, though, so it was a wasted opportunity. At least she didn’t die like poor Baby Josh, though. 

-Big Sir in the CW show is a MASSIVE improvement over the comic version. This is probably the only character I will say this about. Though I will say that I kind of wish he’d gotten his stupidly ugly comic book costume even though it would’ve made no sense. 

-Peek-a-Boo is a pretty solid adaptation of her comic book counterpart. 

-Rainbow Raider (Prism) is much better in the comics than on the CW show, where he only existed to be a boring plot device. 

-Linda Park dating Barry was weird, but they actually did a good job with her character before she vanished.

This is not intended as a criticism of anyone who likes the show or its characters; it’s just me musing about my personal problems with it.

Pt. 1 - Masterlist - Next

It was Kevin.

Kevin was here!

Kevin must be so mad at him. If he didn’t loathe him already, but he’d take it all since he deserved it.

Kevin sneered looking at him, “So you finally came back. I wonder what made you think you could just get away with running off?” He said before grabbing Colby by the throat and pinning him to the wall.

“Your kind just never seems to learn. Always doing the same thing” Colby whined softly as his vision began to fill with spots. Kevin just huffed tossing him back onto the floor as he gasped for breath.

“Did you really think my patience would be endless?” He asked kicking him back down as he tried to get up. Colby sniffed as tears began to fall.

He just didn't want to be abandoned again.

“Hey, shh it’s alright I’m not mad” Kevin said softly, and suddenly he was next to the door where he’d originally been. Kevin hadn’t tossed him around like a ragdoll. He’d just imagined it, which was a relief, but it would come back to him in some other way.

Kevin wiped his tears away and his worry quickly turned into relief as Kevin smiled warmly. He always did that, and he couldn’t do anything but to flinch. He’d run away yet Kevin seemed happy so see him. He should be mad, mad at him for running off.

Why didn’t Kevin make sense?

"I'm so glad you're alright. You were gone for days and I was really worried" Colby whimpered softly backing against the wall, before bursting into tears, much to Kevin’s surprise. He didn’t deserve this. He deserved to be loathed, he deserved pain. So why did Kevin seemingly forgive him?

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry that I ran off. Please, I’m sorry” He said sobbing before Kevin knelt down next to him and pulled him into a hug.

“Shh, it’s alright. You came back and it’s all that matters” He murmured as Colby tightly clung to him, crying. Kevin picked him up gently holding him close as he let it all out. He never should’ve left.

Even now, Kevin still wanted him. He should be thankful that Kevin was so kind to forgive him. He needed to make sure Kevin wouldn't grow bored of him. He’d do anything to stay with Kevin.

Kevin was his everything from now on. If Kevin was pleased that meant he wouldn’t be abandoned and he was fine with that.

Kevin sat him down on the couch helping him take the wet jacket off. He hadn't even noticed it.

“Honestly why did you go outside dressed like that? You’re going to get sick” Kevin said softly with worry oozing off him. He was showing concern. Colby didn’t really understand why but it made him feel warm but also very, very bad. He’d been so stupid.

“Sorry”

“You don’t have to apologize. You had your reasons for running off"

A while later, Colby sat on the couch wrapped in his blanket, content and warm. He'd borrowed the fuzzy hoodie Kevin had, all the while smiling and resting in Kevin’s hold. Everything felt so nice and soft.

It was too good for him, but he wanted it all.

While it might be selfish, he didn’t want to let go of all this. Even Alaric had abandoned him, so this was his last chance to be wanted.

“Next time you leave, promise me you’ll wear proper clothes” Kevin said softly, running a hand through Colby’s hair as the latter hugged him, enjoying the fact he was warm and wanted, for now.

“Mm don’t worry, I won’t be leaving” he said sleepily, listening to Kevin’s breathing before he tensed and then adding hastily, “Unless you don’t want me anymore. Then you can just throw me away”

“Throw you away? Why would I do that?”

“It’s what everyone does…” he said looking away “when I ran off. I went back to Alaric…” Kevin tensed, he’d gone back to his former boss, a disgusting and dangerous supervillain. He’d honestly forgotten that Colby was a dangerous villain and happily worked for a monster like Alaric, following every order without hesitation. Rosa would chew him out on forgetting it, but then again. Rosa had literally tortured Colby. It’s not like she was a reliable source.

“Alaric- he took me in as a kid and gave me a home as long as I was useful” Colby said nearly crying clinging to him. Kevin shook his head, he needed to calm down. He took a deep breath making his anger subside, he needed to know all the sides. He was a journalist after all.

“He threw me away since I wasn’t useful to him anymore. I wasn’t useful enough” he said tears falling down his cheeks as he clung to him for comfort. “You are the only one who hasn’t thrown me away, yet” Kevin couldn’t help as he felt a pang in his hear. He pulled Colby into a hug as he cried, gently petting his hair.

“You don’t have to be useful for me”

“I know, Miss Rosa said you’d keep me as long as I was entertaining.”

“What? No, shit. You actually-”

“It’s fine, you don’t have to pretend, just tell me what you want, and I’ll do it” Colby said curling up against him as he rested his head on Kevin’s shoulder. Fuck, he should find a therapist for Colby.

He pushed Colby back who looked back at him, scared. His brain was undoubtedly coming up with all sorts of horrible scenarios. What really made it worse was how he wasn’t even trying to do anything to avoid the things he thought were going to happen.

“Listen. You don’t need to do anything to be allowed to stay here” He said softly as Colby snapped back into reality focusing on him intently.

“You’ve gone through a lot and don’t need to worry about ever being thrown out”

“I- I don’t need to worry about being thrown out?” It was a lie, right? There’s no way someone genuinely wanted him. It was too good to be true and he couldn’t help but to want it to be true.

“Obviously” Kevin smiled softly petting Colby’s hair as he still sat there in a surprised state. Colby smiled before he leaned into the touch, practically burying himself in it.

Even if Kevin said he didn’t need to do anything. He would be useful. He would do anything Kevin wanted and he would be happy if Kevin was happy.

Because those are too obvious. I want a challenge. I'll also include a brief description explaining why I see them as such. I think that's it. Plain and simple. With that, let's begin.

Jacky: Rabbit. The way she hops along is, of course, how rabbits move. And have you ever seen a rabbit temper tantrum? When rabbits get mad, they stomp their hind legs to show how they feel- it's literally just her regular attacks. There's also her pigtails, and the fact that she drills into the earth? Burrowing bunny.

Colt: Red Panda. The gorgeous coloring just makes me think of him- usually I try and find more in depth explanations, but I can't think of another animal for him. He's pretty. He knows it, you know it, and he knows you know it.

Bibi: Tasmanian Devil. She's small and occasionally temperamental and surely packs a wallop. Also, the cute shade of pink in its ears and open mouth reminds me of her bubblegum.

Sandy: Maine Coon/Ragdoll Cat mix. If you think Sandy isn't a cat... well, that's your opinion and I respect that. Anyway, this sleepy boy loves snoozing in the sun, he's very strong but he would honestly prefer to just chill 99% of the time. Maine Coons are known for being good at hunting. Ragdoll cats, if you can imagine, are cats that show their affection by going limp when picked up by someone they trust. It's very adorable.

Shelly: Tiger. Maybe it's cheating a little bit, because she has her pet cat.. but that's only a regular house cat. Tigers are big cats. She's strong, extremely ferocious and beautiful. Don't mess with her. Tigers are also known to represent anger, so I'm sure that's fitting. Also, skulks around in bushes, and aren't Shelly mains endangered too? :p

Spike: Porcupine. Is there much to explain here? Cute, but not a good idea to touch. Also waddles along. Did you know it's possible to pet a porcupine? Build trust with the little guy and mind the quills, but please. Try. For him. (Not really--)

Rosa: Kangaroo. She's tough and likes fighting. She's a boxer, but I think the powerful kangaroo is a good fit for her. Maybe she's a kick-boxer? Lol. Also, for bonus points, while she does carry around Vinny on her back (my name for the pink plant, for anyone who hasn't seen that headcanon of mine-), mother Kangaroos carry around their offspring.
