GOFUNDMES FOR LEWISTON SHOOTING VICTIMS

For those of you that DON'T know, Lewiston, Maine experienced a mass shooting on Wednesday. I am not from that part of the state, but the state is very tight knit. You're probably 3 degrees of separation from someone, maybe 5 or 6 if you're really pushing it. The suspect has not been taken into custody because they cannot find him.

These are 16 of the 18 confirmed deaths. 13 were injured. If you can donate, please donate. If you're in the state, go donate blood if you're eligible. UPDATE: suspect was found deceased. I think everyone is feeling an immense sense of relief at the news he cannot hurt another person. That being said, the community still has a lot of healing to do.

If you don't see a name you submitted here, it's because most or all of their career was as a child/they were too young for the cutoff, their career was almost entirely after 1979, or music was something they only dabbled in and are hardly known for. There are quite a few ladies on the list whose primary career wasn't "recording artist" or "live musician," but released several albums or were in musical theater, so they've been accepted.

Twelfth-cake and riddles on HMS Erebus

In his entry for January 6th, 1841 in his Antarctic-journal-slash-autobiography, Robert McCormick (who was surgeon on the Erebus on the Antarctic expedition) makes this reference to a Twelfth-cake eaten by the officers:

Wednesday, 6th. — Being Twelfth-night, all the officers took tea in the cabin with Captain Ross, and partook of a Twelfth-cake, which had been given him in a tin case, and was to have been opened on the 6th of January, 1840, but had been reserved for entering the ice. It was accompanied by the customary painted figures on paper and sugar, with enigmas to solve, which afforded us all some amusement and laughter; to aid which we had a glass of cherry brandy each.

(The age of the cake always surprised me a little, but apparently, according to the 19th century Cassell’s Dictionary of Cookery, fruit cake “will improve with keeping – indeed, confectioners do not use their cakes until they have been made some months; and if a cake is cut into soon after it is made it will crumble.” (x))

I had no idea that “painted figures on paper and sugar” were a customary part of the Twelfth-cake tradition, so I had a poke around the web and was delighted to learn that Twelfth-cakes came with various figurines for decoration. They were made from moulded sugar paste, with some depicting people, some not.

In the Every-Day Book of William Hone (1827), Twelfth-cakes are described as decorated with “Stars, castles, kings, cottages, dragons, trees, fish, palaces, cats, dogs, churches, lions, milkmaids, knights, serpents, and innumerable other forms, in snow-white confectionery, painted with variegated colours”.

The Twelfth-cakes themselves were generally large, domed, and heavy, full of nuts, dried fruits, and spices. Hone, again, calls them “Dark with citron and plums and heavy as gold”. (A recipe from 1802 is available here, and one from 1830 here – the latter promises a cake 12-14 inches across.)

You could also buy sets of cards with Twelfth Night figures and riddles on them, which were sold in packs. In the late 18th century, it was customary for the party to draw lots with the cards – and whichever character a person was assigned, they would have to play until midnight.

A lot has happened since i left. I’m still educating myself on everything that’s been going on so if i get anything wrong, please let me know. Thank you.

As of now, 7,028 Palestinians have been killed. Many of them are minors.

Recently, Israel denied the Gaza hospital attack. In response, the Palestinian Ambassador called the Israel PM a liar for blaming Islamic Jihad.

I found an article from the New York Times that says American officials say the attack likely killed 100 to 300 people. Gaza officials estimate the death toll closer to 500.

Here are some accounts that have more information and where you can donate.

Some more news about recent events that had happened, one of which has affected my family.

In Lewiston, Maine, a a mass shooting occurred in a bowling alley. The shooter is on the run, his name is Robert Card. At least 22 people have been killed and over 50 people are injured.

Both Steven Vozzella and Bill Brackett were part of a gathering of deaf people playing cornhole at Schemegees Bar & Grill.

In Mexico, Hurricane Otis has left 27 people dead and four are missing. In my house, we cut the cable because it was getting very expensive so we only have wifi so I don’t want the news on TV. I learned about this Hurricane when my aunt from Mexico called my mom yesterday and told her all the damage that the hurricane had caused. I have family in Acapulco, Guerrero, so we’ve been making calls and watching the news on our phones.

Hurricane Otis was a category five.

The storm is one of the strongest ever to hit the southwest coast.

“Communication and power systems remained largely off in much of the state, making the scope of the hurricane’s toll difficult to ascertain.”

Acapulco is a port city with more than 852,000 people. It is the largest city in the state of Guerrero. Many hotels were packed with tourist since the city was hosting a international mining industry convention.

80% of hotels were damaged by the storm according to the governor of Guerrero.

Acapulco remains without power, water and communication.

More than 8,000 members of the armed forces have been deployed to the area. More than 500 emergency shelters were opened for residents.

The president of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has acknowledged that the government was late in arriving because of the havoc that Hurricane Otis had left.

I am praying for everyone that has been affected by these tragic events. I know people hear this a lot and think “oh they’re just saying that, but they don’t actually mean it. It’s just to make them look good for the media.”

No, in my family, we always pray for everyone. Especially now since dia de los muertos is coming up, my family prays a lot during that time. I am catholic, I was raised catholic and I pray for peace on this earth.

1971, Vol. 1

A Mixtape

A History Lesson of sorts, Babies.

Composed of actual 45s I bought as a kid during '71, snap, crackle, pop and all. Recorded onto a Maxell C-60 low-bias cassette as a mix some time back in the '90s, the order much like it might have been back in '71 on any AM Rock Radio Station worth its salt, or on a hypothetical "American Top 40" episode.

Transferred from cassette to SSD sometime last year ('23). The old Nakamichi cassette deck don't miss a beat! Tape's in excellent shape, as well. No deterioration in 30 years. Currently listening to it via AM Broadcast, on a Zenith Transistor Radio, as The Gods Intended.

It's being played on a 5th Gen iPod (with the audiophile processor), the little hard drive of which I replaced with an SD card holder and a 256GB SD Card. It's playing over an AM Transmitter I soldered together from a kit about 10 years ago that's been essentially running 24/7 ever since I plugged it in first time.

Sonically, AM had this sort of expansiveness to it, like an automatic-level control with a degree of reverb, of sorts, that had this particular sound that lent itself really well to being listened to on the typical car radio, and on portable radios. The 45rpm "single mix" was always recorded "hotter" than the album track, so it was extra "in your face". That, combined with that reverb/compression inherent in AM was, and still is, Powerful.

It is essentially a Temporal Portal back in time, this experience of hearing them now, just as I heard them back than, on an AM Radio, that imperfect medium that seemed so perfect for this music...it is like being time-machined back.

Blogging about it to finally get the tracklist written down, since in my iTunes it's just 'Side 1 and Side 2' of the cassette xfer. lulz. Figured y'all would enjoy the selections. I'll have to dig through my tapes for Vol. 2 and the rest.

How the Cubs swooped in to hire Craig Counsell and shocked the baseball world

Cubs team president Jed Hoyer has always admired Craig Counsell from afar. From his vantage point, the manager had no weaknesses. Hoyer watched as Counsell continually maximized a Milwaukee Brewers roster that never seemed to be the best in the division in terms of on-paper talent, yet kept winning.

Hoyer saw Counsell as someone who excelled with in-game moves, consistently held his clubhouse together and handled the media with aplomb. This was, in the Cubs’ view, the best manager in the game.

But Hoyer also understood that Counsell was highly sought after and he wasn’t eager to make a managerial change with his team. David Ross was the man he and Theo Epstein hand-picked to succeed future Hall of Famer Joe Maddon, the manager who helped end more than a century of misery on the North Side with the 2016 World Series. The expectation was that Counsell would already be locked up come Nov. 1, when Counsell would officially become a free agent. Hoyer had no intention of pursuing him prior to that date. He had an inkling that New York wouldn’t be Counsell’s ultimate destination because of family reasons rooting him to the Midwest, but he figured Counsell would just return to Milwaukee.

This change didn’t happen because of some simmering tension between Ross and Hoyer. But as November neared and Counsell remained on the market, Hoyer’s interest was piqued. An opportunity to improve markedly in a significant area presented itself and Hoyer pounced. On Nov. 1, he reached out and Counsell came to the Chicagoland area to meet with Hoyer. The last thing Hoyer wanted was for any of this to go public, Counsell to end up elsewhere and for Ross to find out. That would create the type of friction between a manager and head of baseball operations that would likely be untenable.

To ensure that this stayed quiet, Hoyer was the only person to meet with Counsell, very few people in the front office were aware of the meeting, and Counsell never came to the Cubs offices adjacent to Wrigley Field. The two had very little interaction prior to that meeting on Nov. 1, but seemed to hit it off quickly and talked deep into the night.

In the coming days, Counsell would meet with the New York Mets and Cleveland Guardians while staying in contact with the Brewers. Late Saturday evening, Hoyer was optimistic that they were close on the financials and a deal would be made. By Sunday morning, the deal was done. Hoyer had poached the best manager in the game from a division rival, and by agreeing to a five-year deal worth more than $40 million, Counsell had set a new level for managerial compensation while also remaining close to family.

Hoyer immediately booked a flight to Florida to meet with Ross in Tallahassee. The two had a long and at times tense conversation, during which general manager Carter Hawkins called some staff and players to deliver the news, and word quickly spread throughout the team.

Part of the reason the Cubs hired Ross four years ago was because they felt Maddon wasn’t maximizing the roster, and that there were ways Ross could better impact the team on the margins. Meanwhile, in Milwaukee, Counsell seemed to always get the most out of a seemingly inferior roster to the one he and Theo Epstein had put together with the Cubs.

Now Hoyer has that difference-maker helming his team. Questions remain, though. The Cubs roster was only good enough to win 83 games last year and with Marcus Stroman and Cody Bellinger headed for free agency, the team looks much weaker right now.

While the Cubs will be active this winter, spending big on Counsell shouldn’t be read as a guarantee that they’ll blow out the competition in free agency. Improvements are needed and moves will be made. But Counsell was sold on a team that is rapidly improving and will continue to do so over the course of his contract, not on the idea that the Cubs will build a behemoth in one winter.

The Cubs have a strong MLB roster, a ton of young talent in their farm system on the verge of impacting the big-league team, and significant financial flexibility. While they will flex those financial muscles over the coming years, the expectation isn’t that they’ll be winning multiple bidding wars this winter in what’s largely viewed as a weaker free-agent class, especially on the position player side

How Counsell will shape the coaching staff is to be determined as well. Many of the coaches are under contract for next year and beyond. The hope is that the majority will be retained by Counsell. Pitching coach Tommy Hottovy is viewed as one of the best in the business, and the Cubs seemed to finally find some stability at hitting coach after Dustin Kelly had success connecting with players in his first year on the job.

But there could be defections by those who are loyal to Ross. Counsell has a long history with his bench coach in Milwaukee, Pat Murphy. Murphy managed Counsell at Notre Dame and also has a history with Hoyer, who hired Murphy as a special assistant early in his two-year stint as San Diego Padres GM. Murphy is a candidate to replace Counsell as manager in Milwaukee, but could also find himself in Chicago were he not to land that job.

All of that — how the roster will shake out and who will be on the final coaching staff — is still unknown. What is clear is that Hoyer and the Cubs have sent a message about the trajectory of their team. They’ve poached from one of their chief rivals and added arguably the best manager in baseball to lead a group that’s on the rise and should contend for years to come.
