Network switches
What’s a network switch ?
A switch is a device used in computer networks to connect multiple devices together within a single local area network (LAN). Its main role is to facilitate communication between different connected devices, such as computers, printers, servers, IP phones, etc.
It is a mini-computer which is made up of RAM, ROM, flash RAM, NVRAM, a microprocessor, connectivity ports and even an operating system.
Tumblr media
RAM
RAM (Random Access Memory) contains the current configuration of the switch and temporarily stores the MAC address table, which is then processed by the microprocessor.
Microprocessor
The microprocessor is the heart of the switch, responsible for data processing, including switching and creating links between multiple devices.
External memories
External memories, such as flash RAM, ROM, and NVRAM (Non-Volatile RAM), store configuration files , different versions of the IOS , etc ...
Ports
The switch ports are the communication interfaces of the switch. There are several of them, generally 24 for a Cisco switch. Each port is associated with an LED which indicates its status and activity.
Tumblr media
How does it work ?
Now how does a switch work to transfer information from one machine to another?
Suppose we have 4 machines: A, B, C and D connected to our switch in ports 1, 2, 3 and 4 as follows:
Tumblr media
The switch only works with MAC addresses , so basically we have an empty MAC address table stored in RAM as soon as the switch starts up which looks like this :
Tumblr media
Transmitting data from machine A to machine B happens in the following steps:
Machine A sends a frame to machine B
Once this frame arrives at port 1 (which is the one linked to A), the switch reads the source MAC address and stores it in the MAC address table
The switch reads the destination MAC address and looks for it in the table, if it is not in the table, it broadcasts to all the active machines connected to the switch except the source one.
If the port linked to the machine we want is active, it sends a response frame from which the switch reads the MAC address we were looking for (@B)
Once done, it records the MAC address of B in the table.
Tumblr media
This process repeats until the switch reaches what is called "MAC address table stability", that is to say it knows all the MAC addresses of the connected machines and has no more need to broadcast.
Tumblr media
Starting and configuring a switch
When it comes to booting a switch, the process is similar to that of a traditional computer system:
POST (Power-On Self Test): The switch performs proper functioning tests on all hardware.
Loading IOS (Internetwork Operating System): The switch operating system is loaded.
Loading the configuration. At this stage we have two cases:
Either the switch already has a startup configuration defined and stored in NVRAM
Either the switch is blank and it is up to us to define the startup configuration when it goes to setup mode
Tumblr media
Switch configuration
Tumblr media
The configuration of a switch is done through different modes, such as user mode, privileged mode and global configuration mode, which allows access to specific configuration modes, such as interface mode, routing mode, line mode, etc.
And to do all this of course you must first connect the switch with the machine via the console cable and open a terminal emulator
💡 It should be noted that the only machine that can configure the switch is the one connected to it by a console cable, the others are only hosts.

I'm just gonna throw some of my writing out here and see what people think, I suppose. It's my blog and even if I never post here I'm bored and I want to share some of my work, even if it isn't the best.
Tumblr media
Alice always liked the late nights and early mornings. There was something about the soft lights of skyscrapers and the holographic ads, the way the city sounds seemed muffled, only the occasional passing vehicle and footsteps intermingling with the wind. Today, the morning was dark and cool, with drops of condensation forming at the window. She stretched, leisurely walking to her cupboard and grabbing a mug from the bottom shelf, pouring herself a cup of coffee before walking towards the large window at the end of her apartment. Setting her cup on the windowsill, she opened it completely, allowing the brisk air to rush into her living room.
She leaned against the opening, absently pulling a cigarette from the pack in her pocket. Alice lit it without much thought, putting it into her mouth as she continued to look outside. The anticipated long day in the studio was a bit of a dampener on her morning, the long shift hanging over her like a miserable boring cloud. She wouldn’t have called her old position flexible or relaxing by any means, but she much preferred being busy on the go, going from place to place, only in the office while she wrote. She bitterly wondered if that was part of the rationale behind her reassignment. It didn't seem unreasonable that someone higher up had observed and exploited it.
Ah… oh well.
Already Alice felt her mind relaxing, and she focused on the cityscape, her cigarette starting to limply hang from her mouth while she gazed past the skyscrapers. When something on her coffee table buzzed, she quickly turned, walking over and pulling up the holographic display. Just a warning about traffic on her normal route to work, as well as a few messages from her boss. She gestured and closed the monitor, walked back and grabbed her coffee mug, and finished her smoke, quickly putting out the end in her ashtray before taking a large swig of her cup.
Grabbing the small device, she placed the cup in the sink and went to the door, stopping in front of a small foot-tall robot. Tapping the small rectangular object against it caused it to whirr to life, flying off its stand and trailing behind her. Glancing briefly at it, she opened the door, stepping out into the corridor.
The streets were emptier at this time, especially close to her apartment. There was always the odd person heading back home or to work, although to Alice their footsteps barely registered, their presence fading into background noise, no more significant than the humming of the drone behind her. As she reached the checkpoint between the living district and the downtown district, she stopped, looking over the large gated structure with tired eyes, hands in her pockets. As she approached, she yawned and found a place in the line, settling to watch the people ahead of her and the security up ahead.
It was automatic now, as was everything nowadays. When it came to this sort of thing, Alice understood completely. Machines were fallible, sure, but people could be bribed, and intimidated, machines could not. They were the cold extensions of the greater machine’s will.
As she mused on, her attention was soon taken by something else, the loud obnoxious person behind her. She glanced back, and sure enough, the man was searching his pockets desperately, sweat beads beginning to form as he went on. Already disinterested, she began to turn away, but before she could completely look away, the man made eye contact with her and gripped her arm tightly, prompting her to try and pull away.
“Please, you have to help me… my information, I’m not authorized, but my child is in there, and I need to see her… please, if you could do anything-”
Alice said nothing, simply raising her eyebrows at first to the man’s pleas. For a moment, the thought amused her. Was there anything she could do? Maybe she could vouch for the man, give him her press license for a moment. But sticking her neck out for someone who very likely had no business in the downtown didn’t sit well with her. She frowned, pulling her arm more firmly out of his grasp.
“Why can’t you go through the processes to get permission? Surely if your daughter is this important you’d be willing to go through the appropriate hoops, no?”
His face fell, the sweat now dripping as he fidgeted with his hands, before sticking them back into his pocket.
“I… I can’t. Please, I’m begging, if there’s any way-”
By that point, they had already reached the front of the line, and Alice turned and looked forward. She let the robot scan her face and looked to see the gate open, a green checkmark illuminated in front of her.
“Welcome back, Alice O’Connor.”
As she walked through, they turned to the man behind her, scanning him while he had already started to back away. She figured this would likely cause a stir, and turned to watch, curious to see how it would play out.
“Unregistered metallic appendage detected, calling for human assistance-”
He yelped, starting to run, which only caused some drones to begin pursuit. Once he turned a corner, she shrugged, continuing her commute, even after she heard a few gunshots in that direction. It was some extra excitement during what would have been a drab day, she could appreciate that at least. As she got closer to the Daily Domanian, she smiled and waved at coworkers she recognized, her tired expression being replaced by a pleasant, content smile. Entering the building, she made a turn and caught up with another reporter, walking in step with her toward the elevator.
“Good morning Tia! Fancy seeing you here now and not doing late nights-”
“Morning Alice. I’m missing it already, I don’t know how you manage to be this chipper this early…”
Alice laughed softly, waiting patiently by the elevator with her as they watched the number go down to ground level.
“Well, it’s just lots of practice. And I’m a morning person anyways, I like seizing all the daylight I can-”
A soft ding was followed by the doors opening and a small group exiting, after which Alice joined Tia and a few others going up. Their chatter was contained, and she took one last look at some of the main news stories of the day. Nothing groundbreaking, just the typical government kowtowing and occasional examples being made. But the incident at the checkpoint made her hopeful that this slow news day might turn into something a bit more entertaining. You never really knew in Domania, people got very antsy very quickly.
She waved briefly as Tia got off on a separate floor, leaving her alone as she arrived at the newsroom. It was lively here, people rushing about to get ready to go live as the sun began to rise. Alice on her part briskly walked over to the set, putting her notes down and taking a brief look at the teleprompter, making sure they lined up. The producer was scowling as he walked in her direction, clicking his tongue as he shook his head.
“Cutting it close, you got here with about ten minutes to spare-”
“Ah! Right, I’m so, so sorry, there was a hold up at the checkpoint, and truth be told… my alarm was set wrong, it won’t happen again.”
The producer scoffed, but he stalked away, shaking his head but saying nothing else. Her smile turned saccharine as she nodded, sitting down and waiting for the rest of the setup to finish. She’d done this a few times and the producer at this point had accepted that she had a knack for it anyway. Besides, it allowed her to tweak some things slightly to her liking. As the cameras got ready to roll, she took a deep breath, smiling a bit more sincerely as she looked into the lens. Another day, another role to play in this weird and wonderful city.
“Good morning Domania!”

Best female characters?
Up until you mentioned the nitro standees release not including them I didn't think they existed
😂😂😂 Oh man, that's so fair and also sad because it's true. I think all of the games have at least one, but not much more than that and they're mostly as fleshed-out as you'd expect the women side characters of a yaoi to be. So this will probably be less "best" female characters and more... "here's a list of the female characters" LMAO
5. Togainu no Chi — There's two; I actually thought it was just the one until looking it up to verify but I did forget entirely about the second. First you have Emma, who is a plot device. She mysteriously shows up to set the game's shady events into motion, promptly fucks off, and basically does not show up again until one scene at the climax which not every route will see. She's given a dramatic backstory but she's mostly an exposition machine and ultimately feels pretty pointless imo despite her technically important role in the narrative. Then you have Yukari, who is even less than a plot device. She's the baby sister of a minor character, who shows up in a flashback/dream to establish that she's his motivation to fight. This is largely not relevant apart from giving sob story points to her brother.
4. sweet pool — Youji has a sister! Erika is soft-spoken and kind-hearted; the siblings have a deep relationship after Erika took over when their parents died, and while we only see her in person once, she still looks after her brother and pays for things like his rent and tuition. But she doesn't get a lot of screen time, mostly a few phone calls, and to an extent I feel like her presence is there to serve as a mirror to Youji's plight and even a tiny bit as bonus heartbreak points for him. All anyone has to say about her is how much the siblings look alike, and she spends the majority of the game pregnant (just in case you didn't get the hint about Youji's totally-not-menstruation/ovulation). And if he didn't have anyone to leave behind, what angle would they play to make his deaths tragic and not just a sad release from suffering? Anyway, she Bears Exposition to remind Youji of memories he didn't know about, and while I do like her and their scenes together, that seems to be her main purpose in the story. I thought they might do something more with her but was left disappointed.
3. DRAMAtical Murder — I can think of three I believe, at least that have names and aren't just faceless plot filler. Oh four I guess counting Re:Connect. Aoba's grandmother Tae is maybe the most relevant woman in a Chiral game; she's a gruff yet protective and caring figure in the story, and she and Aoba have a close relationship that gets a fair enough bit of screen time. She does also get to be the Bearer of Exposition as well as play a bit of damsel in distress, but she gets a bit more development and heart than pretty much any of the other ladies. Besides her you also have Yoshie, a yappy middle-aged gossip at the delivery office whom Aoba does not like and I, the player, do not like, as well as Mio, a tween brat who occasionally comes in a trio with tweedle dee and tweedle dum to fuck up Aoba's workplace. They're both encountered a few times in the common route and don't really have a significance beyond proving that Midorijima has people living in it that aren't just a few random gay bachelors. Aoba's mom Haruka also shows up for a bit in Re:Connect — I kinda thought the backstory chapter would have something more interesting going on, but other than showing off their design and personalities, it didn't really give any more insight to Aoba's parents than we already had. She's not present in the main game and kind of adopted a kid just to turn around and shove him onto Tae instead, so I mean... mother of the year over here
2. Lamento — Despite writing a setup for an all-male society, they do have two female side characters in Lamento. You've got Mana, a prostitute who you ply for information, who only briefly appears in a scene or two after that. She's pretty assertive, but you could remove her from the story entirely without altering the narrative. Kagari has a more active presence; a friend of Asato's mother who is a stand-in family for him, she is straightforward, stubborn, and a fighter of equal stance to the men. She's actually plot-relevant to Asato's route, and yes, does get to be a bringer of Important Backstory Info. I wish I liked her more, but I do prefer her to some of the other girls. There are (deceased) mothers mentioned in passing, but other than one getting some lines in a drama CD, we never see them.
1. Slow Damage — There's some girls in this one! And some trans characters that may or may not categorize themselves as girls; between translation and cultural nuance I'm not entirely certain whether that's accurate for the Roost trio, but personally I saw them as two trans women and a femme-aligned nonbinary person. The trans trio are friends of Rei, and while they're fairly dramatic and sometimes flamboyant, they're also pretty down-to-earth and get to have serious moments and careers. They don't have a huge role to play in the overarching story, but their presence is felt and gets to have an impact. They're also a deathmatch team and a pretty successful one at that, so they can hold their own with the rest of the cast (and at no point does their gender or presentation get brought up at all in regards to their fighting, as far as I can remember.) There's an old woman who runs a sweet shop, whom Towa is fond of despite her brusque or straight-up rude attitude, and a couple of service workers who are met once and get slightly larger roles later on, as well as some faceless filler characters similar to DMMd. Without getting too much into it for spoiler reasons, there are also two other important women who greatly haunt the narrative even though we don't encounter them in present-day.

The Confessor's mood lately can only be described as dour. Four hours of meditation precluded his return to the command deck, and his demanded meeting with the Inquisitor surrounding the events of the last few days.
"I am... Disappointed to learn of the events surrounding the boy known as Taryn, Inquisitor March.
In accordance with the duties of a Confessor of the Adeptus Ministorum, I cannae allow such a grevious fault in both security and dedication to duty to stand unanswered.
I shall be scrutinizing the histories and the belongings of every member of the recon teams you had dispatched down to the planet. If two of these accursed devices have made their way back to the ship, there is no telling what other damnable artifacts have found their way into your warband's rucksacks unannounced.
Excuses, and obfuscation, will not be accepted. Not when this vessel is en-route to Holy Terra itself.
If necessary, I am prepared to expand my work to the entirety of the mid deck to ensure there is no trace of corruption or traitorous machinations within this vessel.
I had feared my reassignment to your warband was mere political posturing, but I see now the concerns of the Ordo Hereticus were not unfounded.
Such recklessness would be unbecoming of even a Rogue Trader's accoutrement... Let alone those charged with aiding in the sacred duties' of our Emperor's own Inquisitor.
I donnae believe that there is a need to call your judgement when selecting these men and women into question, but I am sworn by the Throne to deliver the Emperor's own truth of these matters and to see that you have a warband befitting your expectations.
I do truly hope this... Lapse in the better judgement of your men is an irregularity, and not the norm, Inquisitor.
It is my intention to start with Taryn, and see where the trail leads from there...
If there are no objections."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Rest assured that I do share your concern : Our destination is far too sacred to risk tainting with anything as risky as those devices. Since you are so eager to join in on this most secret of conversation, we are currently on a slight detour in this system, so that I may dispose of the Halo Beast - and now the bracelet, as well- in a way that has been proven to be definitive. Once those devices are safely unatainable, I do intend on educating my warband about it ; but for the time being, it is imperative that you keep the knowledge of what they are, what they can do, and how many are on board to yourself. Whoever you might have discussed this with must also be sworn to secrecy. and I have the decency to let you see to this in a manner you would see fit, without my medling. When it comes to my warband, you will have free range as to who you interrogate. A search of their belongings will only go forward with their presence, if not their approval. Nothing will be confiscated without being brought to my attention and catalogued. And certainly, Haertloch, there will be no execution of any kind without my explicit permission after proof of corruption has been presented to me. Your authority as a Confessor spreads over this vessel, but it still falls under mine. I do hope we are in agreement with these terms, and that I will not find you bypassing my orders for your own benefit. This investigation will be done with respect and tolerance for the men and women that are actively giving their lives for the Imperium under my direction. Failing that, I will be forced to requisition a new confessor from your ordo, but I would much rather be working with you than against you. So Return to me the respect I show you, and let me do my own work to keep us all safe, even if my methods differ from yours."

Gliff by Ali Smith
Two children decode a dystopia, in a chilling and wistful novel that speaks to our times
Ali Smith has never been afraid to take cleverness seriously. It is a distinctly European sensibility, yet its fullest vindication came amid the xenophobic pageantry of Brexit. The Seasonal Quartet was the work of an intellectual first responder, urgently cataloguing the treasures of pluralism as the body politic celebrated its sweaty fiesta of insularity. Not many novelists could have pulled that off.
It’s not as if that crisis has passed; it’s just been subsumed by bigger ones, and Smith hasn’t been standing idly by. Gliff is to be followed in 2025 by Glyph, a sister novel that will further explore “how we make meanings and … are made meaningless”. As ever, Smith delights in sportive wordplay, but those obliquely iterating titles belie a frank clarity of purpose. The world is on fire, Ali Smith is here to tell us, and this emergency calls for some urgent semiotics.
It’s no accident that the proposition sounds facetious. Semiotics, the study of signs and their meanings, is exactly the sort of zero-stakes, language-adjacent discipline that writers, by convention, are allowed to be clever about. The Name of the Rose, by trained semiotician Umberto Eco, may have been formidably erudite, but it was also titanically inconsequential. Smith doesn’t have time for any of that. She has a crisis on her hands.
In the Brexit novels, that crisis was necessarily specific, requiring a substrate of contemporary realism. This time, though, Smith grants herself more speculative licence, presenting us with a grim extrapolation of our current trajectory. As Gliff opens, two children huddle before a loading dock at the hotel where their mother works. With them is a man called Leif, who confers with the woman in terse snatches before leading the children away. There are microphones and cameras. It isn’t safe to talk. For now, beyond the sparely dystopian vibes, this is all the exposition we get.
It’s all the children get, too. But like displaced children everywhere, Briar and Rose – see what she did there? – are possessed of a fanatical alertness. Leaving the hotel, they find their bearings using Google Maps, where salience is glowingly monetised and the only landmarks are luxury brands: “Now Gucci. Now Nike.” The very surfaces and textures of this world are encrypted, encoded with the brutish ciphers of money and power. But the signs, if you know how to read them, are everywhere.
Returning home, they find that a bright red line has been painted around their house, demarcating it from its neighbours. For Leif, the meaning of this is immediate and indelible: time to go. But negotiating with rule systems is what children do. Finding a gap in the line, they simply squeeze through.
It is a skill they will come to depend on. Separated from Leif, they find a house to squat in. Rose, the younger of the two, turns inwards, becoming besotted with the horses that graze in a nearby field. She names her favourite Gliff, a Scottish word whose many meanings – among them glance, trace and inkling – take a page and a half to enumerate. Here they do duty as both in-joke (polysemy is a big deal in semiotics) and incantation, as one lost child reconstructs her own oral tradition. When Briar tells her they are abattoir horses, she has no use for the designation. “You are bullying me,” she responds, “with words longer than my life.”
It’s a typically Smithian flourish, half wistful and half chilling, and in that it foreshadows a great deal. Growing anxious, Briar conducts reconnaissance missions, venturing to the corner shop and the train station, thinking to retrace their route. But the ticket machines are for people whose devices let them pass. In Smith’s refinement of the Orwellian vision, no boots are required. There’s just the computer saying “no”, for ever.
A workman with a line-painting machine is accosted by an elderly activist. Briar takes note of the model name, and as the scene unfolds toys with its components, its volatile freight of meanings. Again, that name – the “Supera Bounder” – is a typically Smithian gem, a little prism whose prettily refracted colours belie a totalitarian purity of purpose.
Befriended by Oona, the elderly activist, Briar acquires a kindly instructor in revolutionary praxis. Drawing on Oona’s store of memories, they begin sifting the cultural wreckage and decoding their own past. For the children’s mother, we learn, tried to play both sides, a corporate shill turned whistle-blower. Picking apart the antique metaphor, Briar grasps what their mother didn’t: that the gesture was empty not because it made no difference but because truth-telling itself is now obsolete.
Her choice left the children among the “unverified”, without status in the all-pervasive “system”, but what other choices are there? What modes of resistance are available, when a corporatized state controls the very currency of meaning? When the children are separated, Smith shows us one possibility and summons the ghost of another. Like Smith herself, children are born subversives, possessed of a radical plasticity. If they cannot save the world, they will “solve it by salving it”.
It helps in all of this that Smith’s natural mode of discourse, in the best way, resembles the questing and venturesome learning strategies of children. In semiotics, a sign is said to be overdetermined when it must accommodate many meanings. Smith is alert to such abstruse points, as when Rose objects to the idea that a passport proves she’s her: “We prove a passport’s it.” But the cleverness she celebrates is innate and ordinary. It is human, in other words, and Gliff is the mark of just such a native genius.

What You Need to Know Before Visiting Japan
Tumblr media
Thinking of visiting Japan? Get ready for a one-of-a-kind adventure filled with tradition, tech, and unforgettable sights. But before you pack your bags, there are a few key things to know that’ll make your trip smoother and more enjoyable.
From navigating subways to mastering etiquette, this guide breaks down the essentials—money tips, mobile internet, cultural dos and don’ts, and more. Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, being prepared helps you explore Japan with ease and confidence.
Pre-Trip Essentials for Visiting Japan
Going to Japan can be super fun, but you gotta prepare first. Here’s what you should know about currency exchange, internet options, and packing smart.
Currency Exchange & Airport Services
You’ll need to deal with currency exchange Japan when you arrive. The money there is called yen (JPY). You can get cash a few ways:
Currency Exchange Counters at airports and big stations.
International ATMs Japan are easy to find. Look for ones that take foreign cards, like 7-Eleven or Citibank ATMs.
Cash still works best in many places. Cards work too but mostly in cities and big shops. Carry some yen just in case smaller spots only take cash.
Also, the airport Wi-Fi Japan lets you check maps and apps right when you land. That helps with travel preparation.
SIM Card Options: eSIM, Prepaid, and Pocket Wifi
Staying online in Japan helps a lot. You can pick from a few choices:
Japan tourist SIM card: These prepaid SIMs are great if you’re there for a short time.
eSIM Japan: If your phone supports it, this is a neat option without needing a physical card.
Pocket WiFi in Japan: This small device lets several gadgets connect at once — handy for groups.
Pick whichever fits your internet needs best while you’re in the country.
Suitcase Travel Tips: Packing Light for Japan
Packing light makes getting around easier and cheaper. Try these tips on your packing list for Japan:
Choose clothes that match easily.
Pack layers because the weather can change fast.
Bring comfy shoes since you’ll walk a lot.
Follow these simple tips on money, internet, and packing to help make your trip smooth and easy!
Navigating Japan with Ease
Traveling to Japan can be really fun, but it can also feel a bit tricky. Planning ahead helps a lot. Knowing some insider tips and helpful advice makes your trip easier.
Before you go, learn about local transport, culture, and how things work. This way, you avoid getting lost or stuck with cash-only spots. Whether you’re in Tokyo or Kyoto, having a plan lets you enjoy the trip more.
Google Maps & Subway Connections in Tokyo & Kyoto
Tokyo’s transit system works well but is pretty complex. Different companies run many subway lines that cross paths in big stations like mazes. Without help, finding your way can take time.
Google Maps makes this easier. It shows train times and tells you how to walk between platforms inside huge stations like Shinjuku.
Kyoto’s subway is smaller but connects to buses that reach major tourist places fast. The city’s central spots make it easy to visit temples and shrines quickly.
Try these tips to save time:
Travel outside rush hours.
Check station maps online before you go.
Use apps that guide you step-by-step inside stations.
These tricks help you move around busy stations without confusion.
Japan Rail Pass vs. Suica Card: Which Is Right for You?
Picking between a Japan Rail Pass and a Suica card depends on your trip style:
Japan Rail Pass
Good if you travel long distances across many places.
Covers JR trains including Shinkansen (except Nozomi).
You must buy it before arriving in Japan.
Suica Card
Prepaid card mainly for short trips in cities like Tokyo.
Works on subways, buses, vending machines, stores.
Easy to add money at stations; no need for tickets every time.
Cash still works in many places but cards are faster when switching trains often.
Some tips for public transport:
Check if your route needs JR trains before buying passes.
Carry both cards if possible; some spots accept only one kind.
Report lost cards fast online to protect your balance if allowed.
If you stay mostly in cities without lots of long trips, Suica fits well. For trips covering multiple cities with daily long rides, the JR Pass might save money.
Subway Etiquette and Navigating Public Transport
Tumblr media
Knowing Japanese subway manners makes travel polite and smooth:
Speak quietly; phone calls inside trains are not ok.
Give up priority seats for older people, pregnant women, or disabled passengers.
Wait in line behind marked spots until the doors open; pushing isn’t allowed even when it’s crowded.
Japanese public transport shows respect and order among riders.
Other customs include taking off backpacks when places get tight so they don’t block aisles or seats — a simple way to show care for others around you.
Following these rules helps avoid awkward moments and shows locals that you respect their culture.
Using these basics—like planning routes with Google Maps or choosing the right transport card—you’ll get around Japan without much hassle and show respect for local ways. At Japan Nakama, we want travelers to have better experiences with less stress.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I use my credit card instead of Suica?
A: Many shops take credit cards but transit fares usually need IC cards like Suica for easy riding around cities such as Tokyo.
Q: How do I know which train line belongs to JR?
A: Look for “JR” signs near platforms; apps like Hyperdia mark JR lines clearly so you can plan transfers well.

Understanding Japanese Culture & Etiquette
Traveling to Japan gives you a chance to see a culture full of old traditions and polite ways. Knowing some Japanese etiquette helps you meet locals better and avoid problems. Here are some key Japan cultural tips and must-know advice for respectful travel.
Japanese people care a lot about politeness and keeping peace. Instead of shaking hands, they bow to show respect.
You should keep your voice down in public places because loud talking is rude there. Spotting these cultural differences will make your trip nicer and stop any mix-ups.
Basic Japanese Phrases and Using Google Translate
Knowing simple Japanese phrases can help a lot when you talk with people each day. Greetings like konnichiwa (hello), arigatou (thank you), and sumimasen (excuse me or sorry) show good manners.
Language barriers happen, but tech makes it easier. People use Google Translate in Japan a lot. Its camera feature translates signs right away—very handy for reading menus or maps. Make sure you download the app before your trip.
Here are some must-know phrases:
Onegaishimasu – Please
Wakarimasen – I don’t understand
Toire wa doko desu ka? – Where is the restroom?
Using these phrases with Google Translate will make talking easier during your stay.
Japanese Etiquette: Do's and Don'ts for Smooth Travel
Knowing what to do and what not to do stops you from being rude by mistake around polite locals.
Do’s:
Take off your shoes before entering homes or some traditional places.
Use both hands when giving or taking things.
Follow eating manners, like don’t stick chopsticks straight up in rice.
Wait calmly in line at train stations; pushing is not okay.
Don’ts:
Don’t tip; tipping can confuse or offend because it’s not normal there.
Don’t talk loudly on trains; keep phones silent too.
Don’t point with chopsticks or pass food from one chopstick to another—that reminds people of funeral customs.
Following these easy rules keeps good vibes with local customs during your visit.
Dealing with Rubbish Bins and Public Spaces
Japan has strict rules for trash, but public trash bins are hard to find.
Usually, people carry their rubbish until they see bins near convenience stores or train stations. They separate trash into burnable, non-burnable, and recyclables—even when walking around.
On public transportation:
Keep noise low out of respect for others.
Eating on trains depends on where you are; avoid strong-smelling foods unless you ride long-distance trains where it’s allowed.
Being careful about throwing away trash shows respect for Japan’s clean streets—an important part of local etiquette all visitors should know.
By learning these key parts of Japanese culture, language basics, etiquette do’s-and-don’ts, plus trash habits, you’ll have better experiences while visiting Japan. Accommodation Types: Ryokans, Business Hotels, Capsules, Hostels
Japan offers a wide variety of accommodation options to suit every budget and travel style. Whether you're looking for a traditional experience, a practical stay in the city, or something unique, choosing the right place can make your trip more enjoyable.
Here's a breakdown of four common accommodation types in Japan:
Ryokans
Ryokans are old-fashioned Japanese inns with tatami mat floors and sliding doors. Many feature shared hot springs called onsen, providing a relaxing and cultural experience.
Guests enjoy traditional kaiseki meals and quiet, peaceful surroundings. Remember to remove your shoes indoors and keep your voice low to respect the atmosphere.
Business Hotels
Business hotels offer small, simple rooms that include essentials like Wi-Fi and breakfast. They’re ideal for solo travelers or those making short stops in busy city centers.
Capsule Hotels
Capsule hotels offer tiny sleeping pods just big enough for one person. Found all over Japan, they are a budget-friendly and unique option. However, they don’t provide much space beyond the capsule itself.
Hostels
Hostels are a good choice for travelers on a tight budget. You can stay in a dorm bunk bed or choose a private room.
Many hostels have shared spaces that encourage socializing, but guests are still expected to follow Japanese customs like staying clean and keeping quiet.
Choose your accommodation based on your preferences and space needs. For a traditional experience, go with a ryokan.
Convenience Stores: Your Unexpected Travel Companion
In Japan, convenience stores, or konbini, are everywhere and open all day and night. They are super handy for travelers on the move.
You’ll find fresh food like bento boxes, sandwiches, rice balls (onigiri), plus snacks and drinks. Need toiletries or some medicine? Konbini usually carry those too.
Japanese vending machines fill in when you can’t reach a store. You can grab hot coffee or cold drinks anytime outside without waiting.
Snacks from these places show off local tastes well. Try matcha sweets or fried chicken bites while walking around town.
Hotel Location: Choosing the Right Neighborhood
Choosing the right place to stay can shape your entire Japan travel experience. The neighborhood you pick affects how much you see, how easily you get around, and how comfortable your daily routine feels.
Here are key factors to consider when selecting your hotel location in Japan:
Stay Near Major Attractions
Booking a hotel close to popular sites like Tokyo Tower or Kyoto’s temples helps you save time and see more. You’ll spend less of your day commuting and more of it enjoying the sights.
Choose Hotels Near Major Train Stations
Accommodations near major train stations offer easy access to subways, buses, and airport transfers. These locations are ideal for navigating the city and even taking day trips to rural areas.
Look for Central Areas with Late-Night Options
Central neighborhoods typically have restaurants that stay open late. This gives you flexibility for evening meals and snacks after a long day of sightseeing.
Find Tourist-Friendly Services Nearby
Staying in well-connected areas means easy access to traveler-friendly services like currency exchange and luggage storage—helping to simplify your trip.
Prepare for Japan’s Hospitality Scene
Knowing where to stay, what food is available nearby, and how different accommodations work helps reduce stress before your journey begins.
Popular Attractions Booking: Avoiding Long Queues
Booking tickets before you go helps you skip long lines at Japan’s top spots. Places like Universal Studios Japan (USJ), TeamLab exhibitions, and Chureito Pagoda get really crowded.
Using sites like Klook to book ahead saves a lot of waiting time. Some tours even offer skip-the-line passes, which can save you hours during busy times.
If you plan to visit Mt Fuji viewpoints or popular city attractions, check their official sites for timed tickets. Early morning visits usually have fewer people. Trusted booking services also give you cancel options and local help if needed.
Getting your tickets in advance means you spend more time enjoying and less time standing around. This is one of the best Japan sightseeing tips for a smooth trip.
Eating and Drinking Etiquette: Cultural Considerations
Japanese food has lots to offer—from casual izakayas to fancy multi-course kaiseki meals. Knowing the right manners makes eating there better and shows respect for the culture.
Some important tips:
No tipping: Tipping isn’t done in Japan. It can even be seen as rude.
Chopstick rules: Don’t stick chopsticks straight up in rice or pass food chopstick-to-chopstick. Both remind people of funeral customs.
Slurping noodles: It’s polite to slurp noodles softly but don’t chew loudly.
Drinking together: Wait until everyone has a drink before starting. Saying “Kanpai!” (cheers) together is usual.
Izakayas are lively places where sharing small dishes brings people closer. Kaiseki meals use seasonal ingredients with beautiful plating—great for tasting real Japan food culture.
Following these rules helps you avoid mistakes and enjoy meals more.
Weather in Japan: Packing for Different Seasons
Tumblr media
Japan’s weather changes a lot by season. Packing right lets you feel comfy all trip long.
Spring (March–May): Temps are mild with cherry blossoms everywhere. Bring light jackets and layers.

On a Wednesday afternoon in August, Daniel Posada and his girlfriend were screaming at each other at a bus stop when someone called 911. From a rooftop a mile away, the Chula Vista Police Department started the rotors of a 13-pound drone.
The machine lifted into the air with its high-resolution camera rolling. Equipped with thermal imaging capabilities and a powerful zoom lens, it transmitted a live feed of everything it captured to a sworn officer monitoring a screen at the precinct, to the department’s Real-Time Operations Center, and to the cell phone of the responding officer racing to the scene.
It flew northwest at 392 feet above the southwestern border town, a suburb of San Diego, passing near a preschool and a church, then near a financial services center used by Chula Vista’s immigrant communities to send money to their families. En route to Posada, the drone—a Matrice 300 RTK—would cross the airspace of 23 blocks, potentially exposing thousands of Chula Vista residents to the gaze of law enforcement over an incident that had nothing to do with them.
Posada was riding his bike down the street when he heard it—the distinct buzz of a police drone’s rotors over his head. Within seconds, a police car pulled up alongside him, and an officer was soon rummaging through his pockets, he would later tell WIRED. For Posada, who’s known as “Focal” in the homeless encampment where he stays, this was neither the first nor the last time he would feel singled out by the cops or their drones.
Police department records show that no one—neither the officer monitoring the drone feed nor the person who called 911—observed any kind of physical altercation between Posada and his girlfriend that day. He says the argument wasn’t serious and that it didn’t warrant such a high-tech police response. (His girlfriend could not be reached for comment.) The money would be better served feeding and clothing unsheltered people like himself, he says, whose lives are upended every time officials break down their encampments, tossing their worldly possessions into a dumpster.
“I could understand sending a drone for something serious,” he says, shaking his head. “I feel like a target.”
As police departments look to expand their use of unmanned aerial aircraft, no agency has embraced the technology quite like the CVPD. A model for police departments around the United States, “some police officers joke that visiting the Chula Vista Police Department is like visiting Mecca,” says Jay Stanley, author of a 2023 American Civil Liberties Union report on police use of drones.
In October 2018, the city became the first in the nation to start a Drone as First Responder (DFR) program, where department teleoperators listening to live 911 calls decide when and where to dispatch the department's growing fleet of drones. Now those devices criss-cross the skies of Chula Vista daily—nearly 20,000 times since 2018—and are often first to appear above the sites of noise complaints, car accidents, overdoses, domestic disputes, and homicides.
The department says that its drones provide officers with critical intelligence about incidents they are responding to ahead of initiating in-person contact—which the CVPD says has reduced unnecessary police contacts, decreased response times, and saved lives. But a WIRED investigation paints a complicated picture of the trade-offs between public safety and privacy.
In Chula Vista, drone flight paths trace a map of the city’s inequality, with poorer residents experiencing far more exposure to the drones’ cameras and rotors than their wealthier counterparts, a WIRED analysis of nearly 10,000 drone flight records from July 2021 to September 2023 found. The drones, often dispatched for serious incidents like reports of armed individuals, are also routinely deployed for minor issues such as shoplifting, vandalism, and loud music. Early in the Covid-19 pandemic, the city even used drones to broadcast public service announcements to homeless encampments.
Despite the police promoting the benefits of the DFR program, residents who encounter the technology day-to-day report feeling constantly watched. Some say they are afraid to spend time in their backyards; they fear that the machines are following them down the street, spying on them while they use the public pool or change their clothes. One resident says that he was so worried that the drones were harassing him that he went to the emergency room for severe depression and exhaustion.
The police drones, equipped with cameras and zoom lenses powerful enough to capture faces clearly and constantly recording while in flight, have amassed hundreds of hours of video footage of the city’s residents. Their flight paths routinely take them over backyards and above public pools, high schools, hospitals, churches, mosques, immigration law firms, and even the city’s Planned Parenthood facility. Privacy advocates argue that the extensive footage captured by the drones makes it difficult to distinguish between flights responding to specific incidents and mass surveillance from the sky. Department secrecy around the recordings remains the subject of ongoing litigation.
The CVPD insists that its drones do not conduct random surveillance, do not go out in search of suspicious activity, and that the technology is deployed only in response to 911 calls or lawful searches. An analysis of Chula Vista’s dispatch logs supports this claim: The vast majority of drone flights could be linked to corresponding 911 calls. But not all of them.
At the time of our analysis, approximately one in 10 drone flights listed on the department’s transparency portal lacked a stated purpose and could not be connected to any relevant 911 call; for 498 flights, the department lists the reason as an “unknown problem.” For residents we spoke to, the discrepancy raises serious concerns about the accuracy and reliability of the department's transparency efforts—and experts say the use of the drones is a classic case of self-perpetuating mission creep, with their existence both justifying and necessitating their use.

hiii so a friend of mine is gonna be running an only war game, and i've got an enginseer written up, and while i know the main trick is just maximizing my autism swag, i'm wondering if you've got any fun ideas for roleplaying a techpriest. thanks!
Sure! Here's a couple of neat ideas I've compiled for some of my NPCs that I might run in future Dark Heresy games. Feel free to pick and choose a couple to work into your character if you like them!
1. "Names are confusing" - This character has trouble remembering non-admech names, instead electing to call every non-mechanicus person something along the lines of "Meatbag," "Lapdog," "Biological One," "Fleshling," "Rat," "Annoyance," "Thing," and/or "You."
2. "Varience. of. PITCH! andtiming" - THIS admech has PROblemsspeaking in NORmal ScEnTeNcEs due to beING so UUUUUUuuused to SPEAKING in PROJECTED TEXT via ocular SENsoooors.
3. "Empathy" is an oddity amongst the admech. However, there are some that still cling to the likes of empathy and compassion. Steel may have replaced their hearts biologically, but even a steel heart still yearns for love. Maybe in different ways than the usual biological beings, but love is love.
4. "Strong silent type." Not mute mind you, they just don't have a lot to say. Instead of butting in to conversations, they tend to wait until someone asks them for something or until the perfect moment to say something (sometimes to comedic effect) (skit's note for Anar-kitty or any player that wants to go this route: be sure to discuss this with your party if you want to play a character like this. It helps to keep them in the know as it will allow them to be prepared to interact and bounce dialogue of your character. Also, while being quiet may be part of your personality, going out of your way to stay quiet even if it inconveniences your team may not be wise. Still talk, and be active out of character! Don't let your parry think you yourself are disinterested, make it a point that the character is quiet, either through stoicism, edginess, or even shyness! Describe body language or how your character may communicate non-verbally (examples: shrugging instead of saying "I don't know," giving a thumbs up to say okay, describing nervous fidgeting, describing facial expressions, etc. ))
5. "Know it all." Everyone around you doesn't know how to "properly" use technology, and it's driving you insane. No one is doing morning chants for their weapons' machine spirits blessings! Heck, most of them don't even know any rituals!! And they just. Point these poor machines at things and *hope* they work??? You need to whip these biological beings into shape! They need to start following proper mechanical doctrine, and it's your job to get them on the right path!
6. "Unknowable" You hide beneath a standard admech robe, only small portions of your body are visible, whether that be your eyes, hands, feet, whatever have you, or even none of the above! But whenever you have a need for something, you always seem to reveal it from beneath your cloak, as if it manifested from the void. Extra arms, weapons, tools, a tail, a data port, comms devices, you name it, somehow it all fits beneath your cloak, and nobody has seen your true form beneath it.
7. "Gullible" since you've been raised amongst the socially inept admechs for so long, your knowledge of jokes and saying are... subpar. You take things at face value or struggle to find meaning in the sarcastic or metaphoric. You prefer the literal meaning of what people say.
8. "[Statement]" (skit tip: look up videos of HK-47 from Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic talking, it'll give you an idea. )
You lack proper means to adjust pitch, leaving you to talk in a constant monotone voice. As such, wanting to show your emotions, you state what they are prior to what you are about to say.
9. "Pets." You find little biological creatures "cute" even if they are meatlings. You may take some with you to places and display them proudly to your compatriots, mayhaps even if they are ugly to them or dangerous. You may take interest in replicating their design into servitors or even converting the creatures themselves.
10. "Machines are friends, not slaves." You find the company of machines to be quite enjoyable, however people seem to view them in a different light. You find this disconcerting, as your machines are your friends, and you treat them with love and repsect! Why do others not treat theirs the same way?
11. "Death is not the end." When we pass, we continue our work for the Omnissiah, either as Servitors or perhaps the Omnissiah may take favor with your devotion and grant you the honor of becoming a machine spirit. Either way, mourn not the dead, friends. We are cogs in the machine, and cogs break from time to time. But we can always repair them so they may continue their work.
12. "Utterances." You mumble odd things beneath your breath or aloud when you think nobody is listening. You constantly seem to be planning your next move, and to others, it may seem worrying. Are you planning a contingency for if they turn on you? Are you plotting a master heist to steal xeno technologies from the inquisition? Did you just insult one of them behind their backs? Are you uttering an ancient prayer beneath your breath that may bless them? The answers could always be yes, but it is more likely that you are planning to construct a new machine from their weapons when they turn their backs to you.
Little tips:
If you are playing online, consider grabbing Voicemod or an equivalent to change your voice to sound more mechanical-y! (Be sure to set up a toggle on and off button for in and out of character, and test the voice with a friend prior to playing to make sure it won't get annoying during long sessions)
Admechs benefit from being chaotic or weird; the classic "I'm crazy or unusual" bit many players want to tap into, but struggle with capturing. My advice? Paradoxically: dont go overboard. Dont try to be the center of attention. Try to be a setup for the other characters' moments instead of the other way around. People enjoy characters like Jester from CR for her chaos, but tend to forget that she largely is used to set up other people to make a joke or to cause a problem for the party to fix, while still having her own character and story that's separate from her "I'm a silly chaotic person." Here's the biggest thing to remember:
Your randomness should be a facet of your character, not your entire personality.
Stay consistent with your randomness. Develop predictable patterns. If you just keep being chaotic without method to your madness, it becomes annoying or difficult to pin down what your character actually is, and that makes it difficult to interact with them. Have boundries your character wouldnt break, and use that to create inner conflict! (Example: I want to pie my friend in the face, but he's sad from his girlfriend breaking up with him. My morals tell me that I love my friend and always try to cheer him up, but uuuuuuugh the prank would be soooo funny to me and potentially everyone else! Ooh, but it'd likely conflict with my want to cheer him up, as it'd make him mad or sadder... How do I feel about this situation and how will it affect my decision and interaction with the other character?)
Developing a pattern to your "I am a chaotic being" helps other players to compliment your character and vice versa! Jester likes pulling pranks, so eventually the Nien figures that out and starts to keep an eye out for it. Does that stop her from trying? No! But its a predictable action that can still be chaotic, while not being uninteractable or disruptful to the enjoyment of the game for everyone at the table. Running gags, pranks or catchphrases are a good place to start, then build on it the farther you go.
My best advice I give for character development, and this goes for any kind of character you run: You aren't just playing a character. You're playing on a team of characters. Try to play to their strengths as much as your own.
There we go! I modified them a bit to be more "for a character" and not an NPC, so hopefully, there will be some interesting ideas to build off of for your character! If you have any other questions or would like some more, feel free to ask! I'm always happy to be of assistance :D

Why I think the ‘Lucky Guy Isn’t real’ theory would be bad if it was true
Lucky Guy, we all know him, but actually, we don’t. There is so little information about him, the main theory in the fandom is that he’s just a placeholder for a different person. But…why?
Now, I’m not calling the theory itself bad. It’s a logical conclusion to make when you’re faced with the info we have. I just think that, if Netease is actually going this route, there is a lot of wasted potential. Plus, they did a horrible job at it.
Evidence for this theory includes: his subtitle being ‘Deduction Substitute’, the ‘I’m me, and everyone of you.’ quote, the vagueness of his rumor ‘We don’t know how many people have taken apart in this game; we know that he played the game.’ and the general lack of information we’ve been given on him.
These do point to the idea that Lucky Guy is just a figment of Orpheus’s imagination, a placeholder for a real person…but why this guy? Look at his design, it doesn’t fit with any of the other characters. If he’s, if the theory is right, supposed to be a placeholder character, why is his design so out of place? How did Orpheus come up with this modern-looking guy? You could say ‘Well, Netease didn’t have enough time or resources to make a new character, so they just used an old one!’ But Netease is known for their attention to detail in both characters and skins. Also, why would a placeholder character have such a distinctive appearance? Did Orpheus just…make up a person on the spot? This person, who looks nothing like any other character? It would be so much more logical to make a simple, completely blank model, one that could resemble Tracy’s bot. It would be low on resources without breaking the feel of the game. If Lucky is purely here to serve as a placeholder, he’s doing a bad job at it.
Also, a placeholder to what? That note was mentioned once, only to be completely dropped and never mentioned again. Like, come on. You could, again from a non-lore perspective, argue that they needed a completely blank, skill-less character for the tutorial, but Netease was completely fine with using Leo, a hunter with his own skill set, as the tutorial for hunters. If that page was purely a plot device for the tutorial, why didn’t we go for an actual character’s diary, like one of the other veterans, immediately. Why did they make a cutscene with another character we never see again when we could’ve gone over the first game’s story, or at least just a simple tutorial sequence using Emma, the face of the game, instead? If a placeholder was not needed, why use it?
Now, after showing that the whole placeholder shenanigans weren’t even that needed for both a lore and a gameplay perspective, I’m going to talk about the actual meat of this rant/ theory combination. Why it would actually suck if Lucky Guy was just a placeholder.
First, details and info that directly contradict the narrative that Lucky is not real; he has a birthday, there’s a description on the site ‘His world is like a slot machine that he always wins; but what will happen if he stops playing?’, he has listed likes and dislikes and there are snippets from quizzes that dig into his personality while Netease hasn’t had a problem with leaving him out of other things like birthday letters.
And for my main argument: why it would be bad, narrative-wise, to just leave this character to rot.
His design looking modern compared to other characters could give us a plot with time travel, which would reawaken the more mystical and grim magic elements of the story. In the games, where things happen which are not explainable with science, this would actually be a good element to see. Fiona’s, Eli’s, Hastur’s, Yidhra’s, Patricia’s and potentially Arthur Byers’ stories already show the more magical elements of the story and how they compliment the world of identity V, time travel would be a very interesting plot point to explore.
An alternate idea, often used by fan-writers of the game, is that Lucky has been in the games longer than others, maybe even competing in multiple rounds. This could give leeway to explore the nature of the game, something we’re narrative-wise creeping up on. Netease could give us more information on the actual nature of the game. Again, with multiple gods, multiple dead people, characters with magical abilities and prizes that oftentimes seem to good to be true, there must be some magical elements to the game. There are also hints that the games are used as trial grounds for testing of some kind, with every participant being given some kind of code. This could be something Lucky Guy dives into as well.
And what if Lucky Guy doesn’t remember anything about his life before the manor. Amnesia is a commonly used trope for Lucky Guy in fanworks about him. If Lucky Guy doesn’t even know why he’s in the manor or for what prize he’s fighting for, he could give a truly interesting look at what the games feel like for someone who doesn’t have a goal. He would just be a lost person, no identity to call his own, just trying to survive the best he can. This could be an amazing perspective on the manor game he’s in now, since he’d have to focus on the people around him and adapt accordingly.
He could also be a puppet to the manor. A helping hand to Miss Nightingale for running the affairs of the game. This ‘traitor’ idea could be a really good plot point for the game. While still keeping him as not real, he now has a much more interesting role which could be used to make a truly dark story around one of the cannon games.
And last but certainly not least, they could give their technically first character ever the same respect as every.single.other character in the game and just give him a backstory. Not every story has to be connected to the manor itself, there are plenty of characters that were not connected to the manor in any way, shape or form before their game. All characters have a story, survivors and hunters alike. If they are not their own person, they are a part of a different character’s identity, used to propel their story forward. Why would what arguably is the starting point of Identity V as a whole be exempt from this? It’s no fun to have a character with nothing in a game specifically known for its interesting characters and wild stories. Even if it’s a bit of a late start, Netease, you have the foundations. Through quotes, introductions and snippets, you have a base. It’s not too late to give a character that is rotting both in lore and in gameplay a bit of use. Every single detail can be useful of storytelling, a big corporation probably doesn’t need a teenager to tell them that. Why would you let as big of an opportunity as a full character pass by? There is so much that can happen by adding an extra character to a story, especially one that has potential, as I have shown in both my own writing and this mini-essay written out of pure passion for a character. It’s never too late to pick up an old project and work on it again. Who knows, maybe you’ll make a masterpiece?
As a more personal, opinionated reason of why this post has this title; I think letting a full-on character go to waste is, well, wasteful. There’s so much potential in this character, especially since Lucky, right now, is still empty. That old diary page could be turned into a full-on book, that face with no name could be turned into the pillar of a story. You already have framework, the fact that he’s coming in later can now actually help focus on where there’s more expansion needed. He could be a perspective we haven’t gotten yet. A confused, lost guy who’s slowly figuring out what’s going on, not being blinded by the race to the prize, a pawn for the puppet master of the game to set in and pull something wild, someone who’s tired of the fighting, trapped inside a hellscape for far too long, someone with the knowledge of times not yet past, able to give insight to things others can’t have yet, a person with his own desire, trusting on his luck to keep him safe or even something entirely different. There’s so much more that you could do with this character than just an old placeholder with questionable logic behind it that wasn’t even needed in the grand scheme of things. You have a character, Netease, do something with it.

Temuco Bound
Tumblr media
(Callaqui Volcano)
A night in Bates Motel (laughably called Hotel Savoy, which had no staff and left me to my own devices. It hadn’t been heated in months and I waited thirty minutes for someone to let me in), with a very sore tum not allowing me to lie flat, on my side or sleep at all has meant soy muy mal.
The prospect of cycling south didn’t look too good after the most challenging day trying to go south to Collipulli, not even my planned destination for the day but 20 miles north east despite the same mileage. I’d chosen to divert after reaching a road which was converting to a motorway. The wind too picked up to 45km/h and removed the skin from my face and shins. And to continue, to avoid Ruta 5 meant many more unsurfaced route that zig-zagged east and west, making for very slow progress towards Temuco. When you look at cycling heat maps, it’s clear that many just don’t try to avoid it and accept early the inevitability of riding on it. I considered this and hoped if I took this option, the traffic would be much less than further north, where it was necessary at time to find yourself there, where the hard shoulder disappears each time there’s a bridge crossing, and there are many.
After a rotten night of tasting acid reflux and wondering if anyone would break in to what was effectively an abandoned hotel, my tummy sloshed around like a washing machine. And having enquired with four people about transport (the train station still stands but is derelict, no, not this terminus for Temuco, somewhere over there, “I don’t know” from a woman who just got off a bus and demonstrated the other category of people there are in Chile) I finally sat on a coach, preferring to take this as a rest day and not lose time and knew I’d made the right decision. The sun was beating through the coach window and even with the curtain providing shade, I felt hot and nauseous. Every now and then, I’d peer out at Ruta 5 and think how much of Chile cyclists taking this route missed. High hedgerows and screaming brakes, exhaust fumes, just no fun at all. From a bike, you’d miss the cone-shaped and snow-covered volcanoes to the East; there’d be no stopping for that opportunistic photo at the side of the road. You would simply be getting somewhere and getting through it.
Every day has been different. My favourite being Saturday into Sunday, where I spent much time with the beautiful and kind Claudia. Sunday, although hard with climbing and weight was tranquil. Sundays are always the best day to ride as particularly in South America, rest and family time seem important. Leaving people like me to take over the roads.
Tumblr media
Monday took me through Concepcion and another run in with testing my fate from the busy fishing town of Tome up steep climbs and dangerous roads through the city. Annoyingly, that was probably the best point to try and sort out my broken camera, only then it wasn’t clear what the issue was. I was spat out into an area reminiscent of a Scottish loch, but this was Rio Bio Bio, also the name of the coach company running the transport I’m on now.
Tuesday. What A Day! No one can tell me cycle touring is boring. It doesn’t seem to matter where I go, every day is a roller coaster of emotion! The area between Santa Juanta and Collipulli seems to be one that is constantly exposed to wind. I’ve never seen so many wind turbines or got so close. Each time a blade came low and near, it sounded like a jet plane taking off. And love them or hate them, Chile is embracing alternate energy sources. By 2030, the country aims to achieve 70% renewable energy from wind and solar. By comparison, the UK target is 30-45% and USA, 80%. It’s hard to know what to make of these figures by comparison but Chile I believe will reach their target. It’s an incredibly green and fertile country from Santiago south.
Having taken a diversion, one which Google Maps or any cycle routing app didn’t recommend, no matter how many pins I put in to route, the short section of tarmac simply stopped providing a reason as to why until then the road was so quiet. Then came thirty miles of mixed, unpaved road: compacted rocks and mud, loose gravel and dirt, smooth and slightly moist clay and the steepest bank of gravel I’ve ever encountered. So steep that in donning my trainers, I still slid downwards as I found how best to also keep traction and push/pull Martini upwards. You’d think the logical method would be to hold the handlebars and simply push. But I found one hand on the handlebars pushing and another on the seat post pulling worked best. We all made it up, and shortly after, I arrived in a small village called Mininco. There wasn’t much there but according to Google, accommodation on every corner. I started door knocking. Three attempts and each owner said “completa” which I simply didn’t believe. There was nothing there! I mournfully remounted Martini, not wanting to put on my cycle shoes in protest, and began a slow trudge on another unpaved road to what eventually ended up as Collipulli. As reluctant I was to keep moving, the rewards were great along the way. The road ran parallel to an old railway track, both running parallel to the Andes. Because of the road’s elevated position, above a long deep valley, the snow-covered tips of the Andes were just visible. I had nothing but birds for company. I imagined that really, the pace I was going was little faster or strenuous than a walk with Nyla, my dog. But oh so beautiful.
Bates Motel was the icing on the cake of a very memorable day. As crappy as it was, in terms of randomness, it was fitting to finish wearing all my clothes in bed, walking through reception in no more than a towel to get to the only shower with sometimes scalding hot water and then freezing cold, and to fear for my life as my tummy ate itself up from the inside. Happy days!
I hope to sort my camera out in Temuco. It may mean a new camera and sending this one back. That’s a large pill to swallow, so we will see!
As for what’s next, I will probably find public transport down to Puerto Montt tomorrow. I’m struggling with this a little because there are some incredibly beautiful areas between Temuco and Puerto Montt. I want it all! But it will take three days and now recovering from a bug, it could leave me exhausted before I begin what was the original start to this plan. I have a day to mull it over.
Never have I written a blog with so few photos! But that’s because I’ve been in bed for 24 hours, so will be back on it today. Viewfinder or not. Although it’s very foggy here today…the descent into the southern abyss. The weather is still looking a bit on the old dodge side heading south…here we go…

Tails OS
Have you ever traveled and succumbed to using a public computer that could be compromised and could potentially steal your data? Or even want to increase your privacy and anonymity against surveillance? The Tails operating system covers this. After doing some Tor browser surfing, I recently discovered Tails and decided to dig deeper into it and play around with it as I am always looking for new tools and protection measures, I can learn and use. Tails, or “The Amnesic Incognito Live System", is a security-focused Debian-based Linux distribution that connects to the internet only through the Tor network. works by routing internet traffic through a series of volunteer-operated servers called nodes or relays. Each user's data is encrypted multiple times and then sent through a randomly selected path of these nodes before reaching its final destination. At each node, one layer of encryption is removed, revealing only the next node in the path, like peeling layers of an onion, hence its logo and nickname.
Tail's most notable feature is its ability to boot from a USB or CD to turn any computer into a temporary” secure” machine by creating an almost ghost-like presence on the machine. When using Tails nothing is written to the hard disk and only runs from the memory on the computer. On top of this, Tails will actually overwrite the memory when exiting to prevent any cold boot attacks. Meaning, that once you shut down the OS all of your actions and information will be erased from memory. This is much more secure than just using incognito mode in your browser because that information could still be retrieved using computer forensics measures. Despite all this, Tails is not a hundred percent secure. There is still room for vulnerabilities like everything in the cyber realm and you do have the ability to sore data on the portable device to transfer between sessions and it is automatically encrypted, but this can be another vulnerability.
Fun fact: Tails it was used by Edward Snowden the ex-N NSA employee who leaked government secrets.

Back to the Future: The Animated Series, s02ep06 “Bravelord and the Demon Monstrux"
Previous episodes linked here.
In this episode: Doc and Clara ground Verne, setting off a chain of events that leads to monsters running loose in Hill Valley.
We begin with Doc showing us the new "ultra-realistic" racing video game he's invented. He wanted to create something that was fun and also helped you develop the hand-eye coordination that you'd get from participating in a real race.
Tumblr media
He says that the local arcade was interested in buying his game, but then something went wrong, which brings us into the cartoon.
Doc notes that Verne had turned into a "video game zombie" and we quickly see that he's become so obsessed with playing video games that he's neglecting his other responsibilities. Instead of running the machine that rolls up the newspapers for his paper route, he has Einstein doing it, which Clara isn't happy about. Doc also gets a phone call from an angry neighbor, complaining that Verne was supposed to mow his lawn the previous month but never showed up. His grass has grown so tall that he can't find his wife.
Tumblr media
Anyway, Verne is spending all his time at the arcade playing his favorite game, "Bravelord and Monstrux". He's there literally all day, until everyone else is gone and the staff has to tell him it's closing time. Doc and Clara show up and have to unplug the game to gain his attention.
We then go to the Brown house the following day, where Marty is lamenting to Jules about Verne's fate: grounded for an entire month. Marty's not happy about the situation, but Jules says that Verne needs to be cut off from the game completely.
Tumblr media
Also, I'm not quite sure what the situation is here. One of Marty's complaints is that Verne is going to miss "four more games," but there isn't any other context provided. Is Verne on a soccer team? Is Marty coaching the soccer team? (Which might be the case given the level of Marty's distress and the fact he's not wearing his usual outfit) My first instinct is to laugh at the idea of Marty trying to coach a team full of eight-year-olds, because how and why did he come to be in that position? My second reaction is that Marty coaching Verne's soccer team is such a sweet scenario to consider. Considering the closeness of Marty and Verne in this series, Marty totally would coach his little buddy's soccer team.
An alternative, funnier explanation: Marty is the one playing soccer, and he's devastated that Verne is going to miss all his upcoming games.
Verne opens up his window and calls down to the guys, asking them to find a way to bring the game to him. He offers to do Jules's chores for a month and to give Marty his baseball card collection. "If you think you can buy us off...you're right!" Marty calls back as he and Jules promptly run off to complete the task they've been given. Jules quickly figures out how to get the signal for the game sent into Verne's tv in his bedroom.
Tumblr media
I must say, it's a refreshing change to see Marty team up with Jules to partake in some shenanigans. However, I do not approve of Marty going behind Doc and Clara's backs to undermine their parenting decision. Come on, Marty. All for some baseball cards??
Now, from here is where things really start to get weird. While Marty connects the necessary wiring on the roof, Jules goes to the arcade to hook up a device to the Bravelord game that will transmit the signal to the house. It malfunctions, though, and the signal gets transmitted through the telephone that Biff's son (Biff Jr.) is holding. Biff, who had been on the other end of the line (the owner of the arcade had called him to complain about Biff Jr. bullying the other kids) ends up with the game signal sent to his house, and the monster from the game soon appears right in his living room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's a thing that can apparently happen.
Bravelord gets sent into Verne's room, and Doc gets hit by the signal as well and gets transported into the game.
Tumblr media
Thankfully, Verne is an expert at playing and can use the controls to assist his dad in fighting off the monsters. He tries to get Bravelord to help him, but the guy is useless. All he can focus on is admiring himself in the mirror.
Tumblr media
He also doesn't take kindly to Marty and calls him a "Puny muscle, girly-man boy." So. There's that. Not a great guy.
Clara soon barges into the room, quite upset that Verne is playing games in his room with Marty and Jules while he's supposed to be grounded. She catches sight of her husband running around on the computer screen, though, and realizes there's a bit of a situation going on. Bravelord tries to hit on her, but she shuts it down real fast, lol.
Also! Doc speaks to Clara and calls her "Clara-boo," which is very cute.
Not wanting Verne to play video games, Clara takes control of the game, and she's good at it. This goes very nicely with my headcanon that Clara learns to play some arcade games after moving to the 1980s post-trilogy. (In my headcanon, it's Marty who teaches her)
Tumblr media
While Clara handles the monster-slaying, Jules takes Marty, Verne, and Bravelord down to the arcade so they can put the transmitter into reverse and hopefully undo all the chaos they've caused. And there is SO MUCH chaos.
Back at Biff's house, he's become a slave to Monstrux (now in his true, more terrifying form), and the monster has also used his powers to bring a lot of the household appliances and furniture to life. Biff's couch tries to eat him, there are knives flying at him in the kitchen, and his fridge and stove are engaged in an intense battle with each other. Monstrux sees a picture of Biff Jr. and recognizes him as the kid who's always damaging the game cabinet at the arcade and wants revenge. He grabs Biff and sets off to the arcade, which Monstrux transforms using his powers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I do hope that this episode ends with Clara and Doc grounding Jules and Marty as well. They've unleashed such horrors upon Hill Valley.
Verne once again asks Bravelord for help, but the warrior is too scared and runs away, abandoning the boys in their time of need. Verne realizes that his hero is a dud and that it's up to him to set things right. Marty and Jules try to help as well, but they're quickly incapacitated by all the now-animate objects all over. Several bicycles encircle Jules, trapping him in place, and a vending machine creates a prison of soda around Marty. (Hopefully, it's Pepsi. That way, he can just drink his way out.)
Inside the arcade, Monstrux is sitting upon his throne, forcing Biff and Biff Jr. to eat Brussels sprouts. This is one of his main methods of "torture" by the way—just making people eat buckets full of Brussels sprouts. As Verne enters, Monstrux sends hordes of sentient items his way, but little Vernie is determined. Bravelord also returns, having realized that running off wasn't the right thing to do.
Verne manages to throw the switch on the transmitter into reverse, sending Bravelord and Monstrux back into the game where they belong. One by one, things return to normal. And guess what.
Tumblr media
Marty WAS attempting to drink himself out of his soda prison.
The next day, Verne wakes up ready and eager to return to his regular life. He delivers the papers, mows his neighbor's lawn, and tells Doc he's planning to go to soccer practice. But guess who's addicted to playing video games now?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Real Doc portion of the episode ends with Doc continuing to test out his virtual reality gaming system. He decides that it may be a bit too realistic, though, when a flight simulator game ends with a crash that gives him actual injuries. He calls to Clara to bring him a bandage and announces he's going back to the drawing board.
Tumblr media
End of episode.
This one was. Ridiculous. Even for the animated series! It was fun, though. I always enjoy when Clara and Jules get to play a role in the episodes since they're so often sidelined. Still curious about the soccer thing. It's never mentioned that Marty's the coach, but I'm pretty sure he is. It was nice seeing him wear something aside from that silly letterman jacket. Clara loving arcade games has also now been solidified further into my mind.
Join me next time for a Jules-centered episode!

On the front line
Story One: On the front line
“The war is in full swing, and I was captured by mistake, how stupid it was to be captured now. It’s a pity that fate has turned its back on us, but we will still retake what we have from the Grays.” Hashal "wandering cavalryman" 5th Zatuga Regiment
Introduction: The fighting on the eastern front is much hotter than expected, there is a lack of resources, the enemy has carpet bombed our supply routes. We save as much as we can, we managed to survive several elephant attacks, but at this rate there will be no one to fight, unfortunately. We settled in the trenches for several weeks, there was a lull, but does that mean that we will soon be attacked by chemical weapons. As much as I don’t want to admit it, they have no other choice, they need to smoke out people and nutcrackers, they would rather bring up tanks, they have no strength, neither to fight, nor to treat and provide assistance to those who remained in the neutral zone. War is war, but no one wants it, it’s not for me to decide what they will say, but everyone wants to live. People are freezing, unfortunately there are not enough Greek bodies for everyone, the wounded are dying like flies on a corpse, how disgusting.
The transition between the lines was difficult, we were caught in a minefield and as a result we lost 20 personnel, two nutcrackers were damaged. But the engineers will quickly correct this, our regiment should arrive in a few hours, even from here we can feel the roar of shells and the roar of machine guns, funny, they are so far away, but so close. The cars move along their trajectory, sometimes I can hear the conversations of my comrades, but their voices are so quiet and loud at the same time, I hope I won’t go deaf with their screams in the future. Thoughtfully looking up, the back of my head hit the metal edging of this corpse cart, legends can be made about this, no matter how much I wanted to relax, but they did not allow me to do so. The roar and hesitant steps of one of the partners were very tense, which forced him to open the face plate: --m? - oddly enough, it was a signalman from the “dogs of war”, my squad, not bad at all, I see he has the same battle scars on his body as I had after repairs, from the dossier I learned that he took part in the attack on Holkan: “Sir,” he said, but when he waved his hand, he realized that I didn’t want to hear any officer’s statements, he covered part of his face with his hand and seemed to cough when he sat down on the boxes opposite my location: --then there won’t be many formalities, as you understand, we are moving to the southern front under the leadership of Azimov Khalochtak, according to my information they are suffering heavy losses, the command is experiencing difficulties in the correct placement of units, there are almost no cavalrymen left, the last attack on the breakthrough was in vain - he remained silent he, finally allowing me to sit more comfortably, folding my hands on the knee joint and turning my head partially in a circle: -continue - meekly cutting off, Hashal fixed his gaze on the uniform and the device on the back of the Signalman, what was his name: Shakur? Call sign: Caller Curiously, looking at him I remembered the professor’s face, just as gloomy and beaten by life, if he were a nutcracker he would be Shakuram, his worn paint and bullet marks affected his appearance, part of his face was split and put back together making his grimace more threatening. The belt was decorated with a sapper's shovel with a sharp end, a good thing in the hands of an experienced fighter, almost like a saber or a bayonet, a knife, the rifle thrown over the shoulder gleamed funny with its barrel blackened by time, chips, notches, everything was as it should be. Throwing my leg over to the other side, leaning back and looking up, my sigh betrayed me, what a shame, they are now looking at me:
yes, the matter is complete rubbish, but we will look at the existing possibilities, even from your words it is harder for me to understand what, where, and how much - the irritated rumble that came out of me attracted even more attention, the soldiers and nutcrackers were now looking at me, hitting myself on the face shield, and rubbing it as if I had damn cheekbones:
don’t look at me like that, yes, we don’t really have a choice, so please, enjoy the silence for the last time, which will no longer be here The nutcrackers looked at each other, some even shrugged their shoulders, some whispered with people, Shakur just exhaled, accepting the fact that they really needed rest, so having made themselves more comfortable, they could only wait
The blow to the body of the car made me wake up abruptly, how sweet it was to rest even during these couple of hours of shaking in the mud, getting up slowly with the others, taking my weapon and jumping down into the mud and blood that mixed with the ground, the nutcracker that ran up to us. Our guide was a former Titan guard, like Cavalier. Some, taking boxes with shells and other things, moved forward behind the Cavalier, he surprisingly moved quickly enough even for Khashal, habits and the reaction developed during the battles took their toll, a couple of times mine fell face down in the mud, but immediately got up, jumping into the trenches and moving along them , we were getting closer and closer to the field headquarters, I was sent here to replace the officer who had died earlier and was burned alive in one of the trenches we left.

FBF News from Yesteryear
April 12, 1974 - 50 YEARS AGO
excerpt from The Journal News

CLARKSTOWN MAY BUILD SITE - BURGER STAND ROLLS OUT MOTORCYCLES
Riding instructor-mechanic Miles Devlin of Spring Valley at trail area
📷 Journal News Staff photo - Ted Neuhoff
One of the few places in eastern Rockland where motorcycle riders can ride on a challenging course off the road is being leveled, and a hamburger stand will soon rise on the site.
An undeveloped, hilly area on the corner of Central Avenue and Route 59 in Central Nyack has been used for years by novice riders and dirt track enthusiasts to test their noisy machines.
A McDonald's restaurant is presently being built on the property. As a result, young riders will probably have to use their trail bikes along area railroad rights of way unless a new dirt site is developed, according to spokesmen at a Central Nyack motorcycle shop, The House of Power.
“Now, a lot of these kids will go riding along the railroad tracks in the county," said Miles Devlin, a mechanic at the shop."They can't be supervised as they should."
But, the future may hold relief for neighbors, customers, and shop officials, owner Sal Mangiameli explained, in the form of a riding area at the Clarkstown town dump.
The shop owner has been negotiating with the town for the right to build up the area for supervised trail riding and training.
The "mini-bike park" would be operated as a profit to the town recreation department and there would be a nominal feefor a day's worth of riding, he explained.
Leveling the hills has forced Mangiameli, 34, of Orange County, to invest $10,000 in a dynomometer, a device which simulates road conditions and allows both the shop's personnel and customers to test the motorcycles indoors.
Other bikes licensed and registered road cycles will still be tested on the streets at the rear of the shop unwelcome news to at least one couple which has been "miserable for six years" in the face of daily noise from the large street bikes.
"Seven other families were driven out of the neighborhood because of the noise," said George Wamsley, 69, of 4 Central Ave. "The neighborhood has gone to hell and we're strapped in."
He and his wife say the value of their home has plummeted and that they would be unable to purchase another home for the amount of money they've been offered for their present one, located next door The House of Power.
The owner of the motorcycle shop said, "We try to get our business done without offending other people but some people just don't like motorcycles."

His Family & Technology
Since Grievous was basically the kaleeshi Prometheus, making technology more accessible to his people (via theft & ingenuity), it would make sense that his compound, his personal family home, would have the best network connections on the planet.
This gave his children the honor of being the first generation of kaleesh to grow up around the wonders of tech. It was no surprise that some of his older children, in their natural inclination to copy their father, became avid scrap gremlins as he would call them. The older prodigious kids that had learned directly from dad would teach their younger siblings.
Things Grievous taught his children, purposefully &/or offhand, included welding, droid smithing, circuitry, & basic programming. All of that came in handy when he would explain how to hotwire ships or work around networks. His clan practically came prepackaged with all the skills needed to start trouble.
Before he exploded Grievous had been working on a way to mask his home network's location spurred on by a sense of impending doom. Ayaan & Igira spent several grief-stricken months holed up in their father's workshop & finishing his work. They were able to spoof their network's coordinates to a random directional buoy that just floated alone out in space along the Muunilist's trade route, since the Muunilist system was relatively nearby.
They didn't fully realize at the time how safe that kept them. Outside of a 5 click radius their network was, for all intents & purposes, some random coordinate buoy. Anyone that might come looking for their family would have to send people out looking the old fashioned way. The old fashioned way being much perilous on Kalee. This helped them become a hub of communications for anti-imperial activity in the quadrant.
Most of the children were preoccupied with the unlimited wonders of the Holonet (& that shitty Separatist version of the Holonet that the Bank tried to get everyone to use). They could learn anything! Many of the children took it upon themselves to learn Galactic Basic, since that was the language most content was in. Ayaan & Igira would stream & post videos to a very niche audience made mostly of other kaleesh. Some of the kids were very taken with sims (what Star Wars calls videogames, derived from simulations. Did I make that up?). Renj-are was the planet's foremost meme lord. Please imagine Renj-are trying to explain to Mertenzi what a meme is.
Many were enthralled by galactic art & music, cultures & machines, people & adventures presented to them from the fraying projections of various jailbroken data devices. But some were also scared. Historically, kaleesh were traditional & would literally fight to remain so for many years to come.
Like us millennials, unrestricted access to the internet did come with its drawbacks. Torrents of the galaxy's worst headlines, acts of violence on unfathomable scales, & unregulated spaces. Uniquely, & horribly, for the family it was very easy to access news about the Clone Wars as it was happening. If they were keeping up with it, as many felt compelled to do, they would often hear reports on or sometimes even see their late father burning his way across the civilized galaxy.
The entire family had an unspoken agreement: do not speak to the more sensitive mothers about it & ESPECIALLY don't tell Mertenzi. Mertenzi, of course, knew. She was not stupid. But the concept was so incredibly painful that she had to pretend it was not happening. Otherwise she wouldn't be able to go on &, dammit, she had things to do. The older children would get mixed answers on how to feel from the mothers that were keeping this secret (Bryaru, Jyada, & Weyla). That was when the pedestals their parents were on began to weather. Mom did not have the answers. They were just as hurt & confused. Even if Jyada would brag about their "giant undead metal husband" in jest, she was still quite somber about it.
