i spent today going insane and trying to locate fictional town estrov on a map of russia
here was the information from russian roulette i used to approximate a location:
—600 miles away from moscow
—hilly to the south and west
—forest to the north
—20 miles from town (kirsk)
—2 miles away from a small village (rosna) with a school and train station
—train from kirsk could get to kasansky station, moscow
so russia. big country, right?
i initially thought ahorz might have used a real place to be estrov and then just switched around the name for it like he’s done with other fictional locations (eg malogosto is a copy paste version of Poveglia, an island off venice that has the exact same history and layout)
so i searched up ‘kirsk’ ‘rosna’ and ‘estrov’. with a single letter change, both kirsk and estrov came up. estrov potentially could have been Ostrov and Kirsk could have been Kursk, but I eventually ruled both out: Ostrov, because it was far too big a place to be estrov and Kursk because it was a city rather than town and wasnt far away enough to be 600 miles (was 339)
I then decided that fictional estrov would be to the east of moscow, otherwise it might have been mentioned that it was close to the borders of ukraine/belarus/ect. i also guessed it may not be north, or st petersburg may have been referenced instead of moscow, seeing as yassen had mentioned st petersburg before in eagle strike (when he was considering retirement)
so i began with the arduous task of seeing what places to the east of moscow were ≈ 600 miles away. this took. a while
UNTIL i came across a town called ‘Kirs’ in the Kirov Oblast region. which was 594 miles away from moscow!!
i did further research into the town, finding out it had a train station (check) and all places nearby were small villages with small number of inhabitants (check). in addition, the topography of the region was very similar to that described in russian roulette
When Yasha and Leo escape the bombing in estrov and flee to the forest in the north, Leo asks Yasha ‘How far is it?’ to which Yasha replies, ‘About twenty miles’ (dunno why yasha is using the imperial system rather than metric in russia but i digress) so that means Estrov is approx 20 miles south of Kirs
Estrov is also said to be 2 miles away from nearby village, rosna, which is said to have a train station and a school. i selected the village ‘Peschyora’ to be a rosna equivalent (note: i could not find out any information as to whether Peschyora had a school or not)
Estrov is also said to have a nearby river, a forest to the north and hills to the south and west. i cant confirm on the hills but the area is surrounded by forests and has a river to the west. in addition, its partially a farming village so it should be surrounded by farmland
the area to the south west of the locality ‘Kochkino’ was my closest bet, and only 4 miles away from Peschyora. all in all, I think finding Estrov was somewhat successful! And time consuming
i couldn’t find signs of any secret military hazardous chemicals facility but that was a bit of a stretch. anyway, it would have been long gone by now if it had been there,,,

"Admittedly, there's a risk in any course we follow other than this, but every lesson of history tells us that the greater risk lies in appeasement, and this is the specter our well-meaning liberal friends refuse to face.
And it gives no choice between peace and war, only between fight or surrender. If we continue to accommodate, continue to back and retreat, eventually we have to face the final demand, the ultimatum. And what then ?"

The #Russian #military crossed into #Ukraine 1,004 days ago. It is obvious by now that #Ukrainians do not want to be “#liberated” by #Russia. This #war affects #usall!

Tales of Graces but everyone has accents based on their country of origin. Most of the cast now sounds like they're straight out of the Xenoblade franchise. Malik is vaguely Russian. Pascal shouts onomatopoeias in French. I think I need this actually.

Who do you think is the one who needs the therapy most out of eight of them? I think if you don’t give Daniil a therapist, one day he will end up throwing his racket to the umpire or the line judge or the opponent and I am scared, but if andrey wouldn’t get emotional and mental support his soul would get across the court and throw the racket to his body somehow.

Looking at gerrymandering from other countries compared to gerrymandering from the United States really puts into perspective for me how undemocratic certains parts and institutions of the US have been for years, way before Trump.
Let's look at Nizhny Novgorod and Samara for example in Russia. maps and results are from the 2021 legislative election. (Blue districts were won by United Russia and red districts were won by the russian communist party)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
it's pretty easy to see whats happening here, with cities being split up strategically to be grouped with large swathes of conservative rural voters. while i'm not aware of the deeper nuances in Russian politics, in my eyes these districts are what comes to mind when i think of gerrymandering, and in Samara you can even see it in action actively barring the communist party off from maybe 1 or 2 more seats in the region.
now let's look at Dallas, Texas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
you can clearly see a difference here. while it follows all of the same principles as the Russian map does, it's hyperoptimized to the point of absurdity in the american map, to the point where the republicans and democrats dont even bother nominating opposition candidates in some of these districts because it would be a waste of money to do so.
I don't think anyone is really considering Russia a free and fair democracy. while I think a lot of western perceptions of its politics are very overblown, it's not like in North Korea where there's 4 parties all run by the same person and candidates win with 100% of the vote, there's a legitimately competitive opposition in Russian elections but when it comes to the overall winners its very stacked in United Russia's favour. this is notable to me because when compared to American election maps Russia comes away looking far more reasonable, and that really shouldn't be the case in an alleged free and fair democracy. i'm not making this comparison to say "oh america is doing gerrymandering just like russia!" it's mainly to compare how two countries, one widely considered a dictatorship and one widely considered a free democracy, both perform this specific anti-democratic practice. The narrative that the US is somehow the oldest democracy or the freest country on earth has been laughable pretty much since its inception to pretty much anyone who doesn't live there, and i think that's finally becoming more clear to americans as well.

У клещей и прочих блох Рацион из рук вон плох, Потому что мир животный Преимущественно сдох. Гнус в отсутствии зверей Кровь сосёт из егерей...

...OTOH the claim in the next stanza that the (also observed) increase in forest fires has to do with the tick victims smoking to calm down is probably the wrong causal relationship. But TBH I'm not sure if I can rule it out at this point.
it's so chilling to walk through an area where the houses are surrounded by blank sterile lawns and see a big lilac bush in full bloom without a single bug on it. No bees, no butterflies, not a stir of activity.
