the thing about Ethan and Ilsa . is that for Ilsa the work they do is just a job but for Ethan it’s a vocation. like both of them have been moulded into the person they are through their work but they relate to that work very differently. and despite that they are each other’s equals. but this difference produces two fundamentally incompatible responses to what are effectively the same sets of circumstances - disavowal, betrayal, manipulation, etc from their governments - where for Ilsa it’s proof that this is a dead end, she needs to do something else with her life but can’t imagine what else she would possibly do because it’s all she knows how to do, but for Ethan it’s simply a problem he has to work around, an unfortunate fact of his profession that he has to contend with. like on some level Ethan accepts the same mistreatment that forced Ilsa out because he’s survived it, and that gives him a type of security she will never be able to have. like the fact that this is a vocation for Ethan, and that he has been so successful at it, means he is in some way loyal to the same institution that ruined Ilsa’s life.

and this is a major source of tension between them because no matter how many times they confront each other about the (very similar) trajectory of their lives, they’ve internalised and processed that trajectory differently on like an atomic level. so they’re doomed to spend their lives apart even though they won’t ever meet another person who understands them like they understand each other. despite the fact that the part of them that makes them equals is also the part that alienates them from one another. makes me fucking insane !!!!!
