I’m glad this talking point from the mid-2010s has mostly faded. A lot has been written about how awful Sasuke and Sakura’s relationship is without antagonising Sasuke. Their dynamic is awful, but it’s not rooted in exploitation of unequal power, gender isn’t the sole issue here, especially when one is a survivor of state-sponsored genocide. That said, I do understand fandom feminist responses. Around Sasuke, Sakura is stripped of her dignity: she is reduced to a crying helpless woman, she tolerates his harsh words with a pained expression, lets him act however without retaliation, and dissolves into tears instead of holding her ground. She cannot challenge him. She can not handle him at his worst. She can't influence him. All this in contrast to Naruto, who can.

Remember the Chunin Exams scene where Sakura is about to expose Sasuke’s curse mark, and he grabs her wrist with force to stop her from doing so , rudely telling her to stop interfering in his life? The sheer force and harsh words leave her trembling in tears, a moment that would throw off any self-respecting female viewer. The irony? This interaction is often framed as a “SasuSaku moment” in compilations… simply because it’s one of the very few times Sasuke willingly touches her. Naruto then immediately calls Sasuke out for making Sakura cry. And how does Sasuke respond? He smirks and hypes up Naruto as a rival he’s looking forward to fighting. It’s a perfect microcosm of their dynamic: Sakura can't handle Sasuke, she is sidelined and the narrative pivots to prioritize the Sasuke and Naruto's relationship.

When Sasuke prepares to abandon Konoha, Sakura breaks down in tears and delivers a speech - the kind only someone as sheltered as her could muster. Sasuke barely reacts. This pattern continues at the Kage Summit: Sakura hesitates to kill Sasuke, conflicted by lingering feelings, while he unflinchingly moves to murder her in a one-sided “fight” (if it can even be called that). There’s no remorse, no hesitation , just cold indifference.

Later, during the war arc, Sakura laments that Sasuke doesn’t care about her at all. She asks Sasuke about what's happening . He dismisses her with a callous “You don’t need to know, you’re useless anyway” leaving her visibly wounded. Contrast this with Naruto, whom Sasuke calmly explains everything to. Sakura spirals into yet another tearful monologue about her inability to reach him. When she desperately begs him to value her. Sasuke mocks her feelings and puts her in a brutal genjutsu.

Sasuke isn’t deliberately antagonizing Sakura - he doesn’t invest enough attention or consideration in her to actively antagonize her. He just doesn't care.

It’s not abusive, but the optics are undeniably horrendous.

Freedom.

I've been shackled by guilt for so long. Was it guilt? Shame? I don't know. I could probably even say it's grief. Grief that I had put my trust into her and shared a piece of my soul. I had written about the sun. I wanted to share that with her.

She scoffed. "This is childish" she uttered... Right into my face.

Nearly 15 years later, I run into this collection of writing. It's on a fanfiction site. I have always read fanfiction since I was 15. I had recently popped some Benadryl, ready for my life to halt. I read these texts. Even in my dizzy, blurry haze I realized something. I kept reading them. It had been a few days now. I had stopped putting the Benadryl in my mouth. The fanfiction I read put my feelings and life onto paper, the digital paper. The similarities weren't all metaphorical. I felt like a spotlight was on me. One that said "Seven, open up. It's time to start healing."

That voice in my head began the journey.

With shaking hands, I typed in the username of these fanfiction pieces.

Happy ending at last

Somewhere out there, Tony Stark died, and with his final breath, he saved the universe. The Avengers won. Thanos was deafeted, but the cost was too much for some to bear.

But what none of the realised, is that they reached their goal. They stopped Thanos. They managed to make sure the Blib never happened. They saved a Universe.

Just not their own.

Somewhere out there, Thanos and his army left a universe, to fight in another one. There, Thor did get Asghardians safe to Earth. Loki got his second chance. The Accords were reversed. The Avengers got back together. Tony got to get married, and become proper father to Peter, joined by Harley, and later Morgan. Peter and Loki got to become friends. Peter got to meat Matt and Wade, he got to introduce them to May. Steve and Bucky got to get somewhat of normal life, and adopt a little girl together. Natasha got to reunite with her sister.

New York, the Earth, was protected.

Somewhere out there, a Universe was saved, without even knowing.
