Complaining abt Suicide Squad yet again but the fact that they have Waller exposing the alien community to space racist attacks and talking abt how she got to her position through deceit and being a terrible person and stuff is just. Ahsfiwueh JUST SAY YOU DONT KNOW WALLER.

Anyways literally the 3rd mission of the Squad ever (and the first framed as smth Waller picked and not orders from above) was the Squad discrediting and stopping a rogue vigilante who was only arresting POC and funneling white people into white supremacy groups (of which he was the most prominent member) in SUICIDE SQUAD #4. and it's explicitly framed as this mission being personal for Waller that she's hiding from the government bc its illegal like. Guys. Please why are we having her incite (space bc comics) racist attacks now

Also the whole "Amanda got her position through deceit and being a terrible person" NO. she KEPT her position through being shitty and playing complicated political games!!! She wasn't always that way like there is a difference and it is IMPORTANT ppl PLEASEEEE. In Secret Origins #14 we learn Amanda's backstory and she used to be a normal, caring person! Like even after she entered into working in government and politics she wasn't automatically morally bankrupt like please people. She was originally given control of the Squad by Reagan (*sigh* 80s comics...) to distract and get rid of her because she was so successful at pushing progressive social policy in Congress. Acting like she's this static pillar of evil is such a waste of her character and so fucking uninteresting and disrespectful to her arc it drives me MAD.

Like I am NOT saying Waller is all sunshine and rainbows, she fucking SUCKS (said w love <3) but like there's a human being there. It's a progression, she has a character arc like please, DC, please!!! They've fucked up Waller so bad and made her so opaque and uninteresting she can't even be the protagonist of her own story for fucks sake!

Like I don't know how many times I have to scream it until DC hears me or remembers but WALLER IS THE MAIN CHARACTER OF SUICIDE SQUAD. ITS HER BOOK. yet right now she's a cutout to be used as the villain wherever the writers please. Even in her book we get none of her perspective really displayed, no exploration of her thoughts with any kind of understanding of the role she traditionally has played and was made to play in the story.

Anakin:

Look, do I think Anakin is sympathetic? Sure. Do I still think he's a criminal who hurt his friends and family and that his actions are his fault? Yes. Could I ever see someone with his personality being friends with me? No. Does he need therapy? So much. Am I interesting in jumping into the Star Wars fandom Anakin discourse? Absolutely not. I'm not a fan that HATES him, but he's just not "my character" you know what I mean?

However, you will notice I checked the "wasted potential" box. And that is for the one thing very specific thing about Anakin's character that I am passionate about (feel free to disagree if you want).

Do I wish we could have gotten more between him/his force ghost and his grandson Ben Solo/Kylo Ren in the sequels as a way for him to make it up to Leia and Han for what he did to them? 100% Yes. He saves Luke, yay, but he has a whole other kid who he held back as she watched her planet, home, and family get blown to smithereens and a son-in-law he tortured. And maybe there's a comic or spinoff where they have a scene together, idk. But how poetically beautiful would it be if Anakin made up for not doing anything about the destruction of Leia's family on Alderaan by helping save her new family from the dark side and ultimately, his own legacy? There's so much I could say about this, but I think you get the idea.

One moment that stood out to me in Volume 1 was Binghe's surprise POV. Where we got to see how he looks at the world for a snip bit as his Shizun was in his carriage looking at Liu Mingyan thinking he is gonna witness Binghe romance her soon. Saying how pretty she is, I believe. And Binghe is all, "Why is Shizun looking at her? I'm much better to look at." We see how much of an act the sweet disciple Binghe is for Shen Qingqiu. Not the Binghe Shen Qingqiu sees through his eyes, or what he knows from the story. Of how Binghe wants all of Shen Qingqiu's attention for himself while the older man is being doted on by others than himself. I also love the scene right after where Shen Qingqiu is being made fun of for not doing anything himself and then Binghe comes in all, "Does Shizun want snacks? 🥰" Proving the woman's point.

[I love the skelms. They might be my favorite Pathfinder monster new to 2e. I've seen the idea of a male equivalent to hags discussed before. Someone on rpg.net, maybe it was @crinosg or @prokopetz, gave their take the name "coots" and used the Old Man of the Mountain from a Betty Boop cartoon as their model. Paizo's brilliant idea was tying their male hag analogue to ideas of toxic masculinity and entitlement. Since I'm someone who loves to use monsters as tools of social commentary, I was basically their target audience here.]

Skelm, Street CR 3 LE Monstrous Humanoid If not for his unnaturally red face and the rack of antlers growing from his brow, this could be an ordinary human. He wears leather armor and carries a cane.

Skelms are creatures of rage and spite, created spontaneously from evil humanoids overwhelmed by anger. All skelms are male, and some sages posit that they are some sort of metaphysical counterpart to hags. Unlike the prolonged ritual to make a hag, a skelm can arise from a totally normal person in a matter of hours—skelms often hold court over potential recruits and transform them through brutal, humiliating hazing. After transformation, a skelm will often return to their previous life, hiding their inhuman features through magical disguises and changing their pursuits to cruelty and exploitation full time.

All skelms have antlers, which are a source of combined pride and shame. Skelms with smaller racks will belittle those with larger ones, although they will claim other reasons for this scorn if pressed. Even more distinctively, skelms deny that they have antlers when dealing with non-skelms, regardless of evidence or argument.

Street skelms are the weakest of the skelms. In their mortal guise, street skelms exploit the respect most people give to the elderly and the wealthy, and they usually appear as one or both of these in order to recruit a mob. Street skelms have little in the way of magical talents, but they are skilled at finding scapegoats to blame for community ills and sic their followers after. Street skelms have even more of a chip on their shoulder than other skelms do, and their egos are especially delicate. Their combat tactics, whether they are in their monstrous forms or not, tend to revolve around doing an immense amount of damage to a single target at a time, preferably a weak or vulnerable one, and then crowing about it for a few rounds before resuming their assault.

and thats literally JUST talking about mei and it doesnt even begin to cover the other female characters. chang'e constantly gets reduced to being red sons aunt/mom/big sister despite them like. not having any actual interactions in the show. lady bone demon constantly gets overshadowed by her minion who has like 2 seconds of screen time, or she gets made into a cartoonishly abusive madwoman who people call lady bitch demon. just in general people act like shes a horrible person for like. being a villain. liks yeah the trying to destroy everything was bad but also she was an antagonist and thats what antagonists do LOL. spider queen gets completely ignored. princess iron fan gets made into a cartoonishly abusive mother so that way red son can have a poor angsty backstory and some male character (usually nezha, macaque, swk) can take care of him.

(also theres just a great deal of ethnocentrism in the lmk fanbase? like im white so take what İ say here with a grain of salt but so many people will misconstrue aspects of chinese culture for their own personal hcs. people will say male characters are transfem or nonbinary while completely ignoring the time period/culture their from where thats the norm. like yippee youve implied that an east asian man is feminine/emasculine because he has long hair. how do you not see the negative connotations with this. people also turn pif (& lbd to an extent) into a dragon lady which obviously has negative racial connotations lol.)

Why involve them then? Why not make a quest mostly about uninteresting npcs like you so love doing? WHO APPROVED THIS

...at least the other animated short, with the twins, is so good

Tbh i dont have any specific gripe with arle's SQ, it's good enough

What i like about it :

Fatui trio dynamic and quirks when they interact with each other (fist bump, natural role division when they scheme, etc.)

Lyney's conviction about 'this is my family, i will protect them with my life' is SHOWN instead of TOLD multiple times (planned the scheming, trying hard to help clervie, stepping up to fight Arle)

The MAIN FOCUSED character initiated the plot instead of 'oh hello random npc i've never met OF COURSE i'll help you'

Arle and Childe dynamic (talks about family growing up, mutual agreement that regrator sucks), feels natural, childe naturally believing rumours easier and arle cautiously choosing her words to mold how people perceive her even in leisure

Alre's strict principles well established (traitors must be punished, all support/sacrifices will be rewarded) it is obvious she works for her goals alone, she joins factions and alliances because she establishes equal trades regardless of which side you fight for.

She clearly don't want to be like Crucabena because she was once her child, and while that doesn't fully explain why she 'cares' about the House, i can excuse that Clervie atleast influenced her in some way so that her children has the freedom to choose the life they wish to live (referring to Clervie's only freedom then is to choose to die)

What i don't like :

The entire facking backstory spoiled in the animation for pity points and/or marketing

Deux ex machina in the form of khanerian crimson moon descendant so her flames can just... anchor people's dying shadow to the world???? sometimes????? plus clervie died when she is 16 and for some reason the shadow is 10 because.........?

Her flames has memory powers also so that she can just choose to make people forget memories of the House

Also look, i get that it's her answer to children who wants choose the life they want, its a magical fantasy world okay pog. But like... so are you saying that these children who forget their House memories just.... get handed a life? a house? a new identity? are people not gonna question why new people are suddenly popping up in their neighborhood? is the government in on it so that they can basically gaslight people that 'ah yes this former fatui person is now your neighbor, has always been!! mhm yeah'?? This is some irminsul level world deletion but manmade??????????

Look its a good premise, it just.... half-bad execution. I get what theyre trying to tell but they are patching the loopholes with magical tissue paper. Its... a lil too easy i think, too hand-wavy. If it was a magic spell to make them forget then they were set to live in a different area and helped gradually to integrate to society, its a lil better. But like... EVEN in the story quest those people who took the bottled flames took a full 2 DAYS to reintegrate to society the SAME society they operated as fatuis in, no issues whatsoever.

While my original gripe is just that the animations shouldve dropped a couple days after the SQ (like how genshin usually post cutscenes a few days after the quest), the more i look into it the more im just squinting at this

Suddenly you felt some arms around your small body,now you were trapped in his arms. Giggles being heard from him and a sweet smile on his face.

"Bokuto san, please let Mn breath".Akaashi said while checking that he doesn't hurt you with his arms.

But you were okay,being safe in your best friends strong arms.

•Also always corrects people when they say the wrong name/pronoums even if they are intentionally or accidentally wrong.

"Kiyoko san,can we talk?"

"Of course,is everything alright?"

"Yeah,just wanted to tell you something..."

She nodded and let you take your time to say it.

"I'm actually trans"you lowered your head so that you wouldn't see her reaction.

"Oh I already knew that"she giggled and went back to the gym.

You were shocked and followed her asking a lot of questions.

ok once upon a time failed in many regards but one thing they continuously did right were the scenes of sq on regina’s front porch (whether we’re talking about shipping them or not, it doesn’t matter)

anyway i’m gonna rant so.

in 1x01, regina starts off on the porch, being higher than emma and showing the audience that she has the power but she comes down when she’s threatening her, which is interesting because now they’re on the same level. which i’m guessing is supposed to give us some sort of moment of clarity for emma or maybe regina doesn’t really believe what she’s saying. they’re suddenly on the same level though which means in this moment their power is equal. regina has the ability to fuck up emma’s life and emma has the ability to fuck up hers. but then regina steps back onto the porch and emma doubts regina’s love for henry, telling us she’s doubting regina and that doubt actually gives regina some of the power back (because she actually really does love henry)

also the coloring of this scene is perfection. it’s meant to make us feel threatened and misled. and show that regina is being intimating. (the color of their outfits is also so important)

OH and that arc shot!! when the camera does a 360 around emma and we’re suddenly facing regina, this is meant to make us feel a little lost but keep those power dynamics between them

honeslty this is one of my favorite scenes in the entire show because it’s actually really well thought out, directed and edited. plus jmo and lana acted their asses off

THEN, in 1x18, we have this other moment of them on the porch where emma’s accusing regina of having framed mary margaret (not in so many words but the point is there). in this scene, there is literally not one moment where the two of them are on a different level. emma has gained some power, she has figured regina out, and regina no longer has the upper hand. (their outfits being almost the exact same also proves that point)

in 2x10, they’re back on the porch again when emma confronts regina about archie’s death. they start off at equal height, and then when emma steps off the porch, we literally see regina step down too. regina may be getting confronted and accused of something horrible, but they’re still equal here. regina even knocks emma down, but emma gets right back up.

not to mention, they’re outfits in this scene are SO important because they literally are the exact opposite of what they wore in 1x01.

and then finally, in 5x05, we have another scene with them on the porch when emma’s the dark one and regina confronts her about camelot and what happened with the dreamcatcher. (again, it’s all about confronting. these two only have scenes on this porch when it’s about one of them confronting the other)

they start off with the same level of power. they’re at each others height, until regina leaves and emma walks off the step. she literally has that power taken away from her in this moment because, arguably, she’s just lost her son and regina and even though she’s the dark one, that loss takes something from her.

and AGAIN—their outfits. regina is wearing red (shes pissed, has the power, we’re being encouraged to focus on her and maybe even relate) and emma’s wearing black (she’s depressed, and has power, even if that power gets taken form her just a little in this scene)

the fact that this scene happens at night (when all the other ones happened during the day) i think is also really important. we as the audience feel a little uneasy here and that’s done on purpose.

these scenes just really get to me because they genuinely get the job done. they do exactly what television is supposed to do, which is affect the audience without actually saying something. we don’t need to hear what emma and regina are saying in these scenes to understand their roles, their power, and the way they feel about that particular moment
